                                      Book Description

Nonlinear systems with random structures arise quite frequently as mathematical models in diverse disciplines. This monograph presents a systematic treatment of stability theory and the theory of stabilization of nonlinear systems with random structure in terms of new developments in the direct Lyapunov's method. The analysis focuses on dynamic systems with random Markov parameters. This high-level research text is recommended for all those researching or studying in the fields of applied mathematics, applied engineering, and physics-particularly in the areas of stochastic differential equations, dynamical systems, stability, and control theory.

5 out of 5 stars Another treasure from the wonderul Library of America.......2005-04-10

I am so glad the Library of America put together these volumes of reporting from the Second World War. Sadly, all those who were living during those years are leaving us all to rapidly. Certainly, the living knowledge of the events and times is fading fast. While we value the books great authors give us, we should treasure even more the writing given us at the time. In volume one we have reporting from great journalists starting in 1938 Shirer's article on the Munich conference that gave Germany the Sudetenland.

We get to follow the rise of Anti-Semitism in Germany with Kristallnacht, the fall of Poland and Paris. The London Blitz is covered by Edward R. Murrow and more and more. The United States doe not even enter the war until page 241 with the Herald Tribune's reporting of Roosevelt's "War Message".

The reporting also takes us into the Pacific and gets us down with those doing the actual work of the war including Annalee Jacoby's account of nurses under fire in Bataan. We get early reporting on the Japanese Internment camps and the Holocaust with the NY Times reporting in 1942 that one million Jews reported slain.

There is a section of fine photos of the reporters included and others in the text including some aerial shots from a bomber's point of view. This first volume ends with the Mountain Campaign in Italy in 1944. The volume also supplies a short, but full chronology of the war, some excellent maps, biographies of the journalists, acknowledgements, notes on the texts, and a glossary of military terms.

                                      A superb job.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable First Hand Reporting.......2005-02-28

You can read history books and watch all of the redigitalized DVD's (movies) of World War II stories but the "best of the best" is right here in this wonderful compilation of first hand accounts from reporters who were on the scene and reported back to their readership when the events were actually occurring. It is fascinating to read what was reported at that time in history. This compliation is well worth reading. It also contains a great general biographical summary of all of the reporters who's work appears in the book. These were interesting people in their own right. I will use their biographies as a valuable resource for other additional readings.

5 out of 5 stars Eyewitnesses to War.......2000-04-05

Back before all news came filtered through a television lens, hard working men and women travelled to remote locations and put themselves in harm's way to write eyewitness accounts of history for newspaper and magazine readers. This fascinating book is full of such accounts, from William Shirer's account of the 1938 Munich Conference (including his brush with a swaggering Hitler) to fascinating reports of the fall of Paris by A. J. Liebling and Virginia Cowles, to Edward R. Murrow's descriptions of war-torn but defiant London to Ernie Pyle's moving tales of soldiers in the trenches of Africa and Sicily. This book offers a unique glimpse into World War II by the people who were there, who lived through the extraordinary as well as the ordinary moments of that war. Included in this volume are incredible snapshots of the American homefront, including a report from a Japanese internment camps, as well as a "report on mass murder" in German concerntration camps by Ed Murrow in 1942, long before most Americans had any idea of the true horror of the holocaust. This volume explores all aspects of the war, and, as such, is an incredible historical document as well as a fascinating read. Highly recommended!

For the student, minister, and layperson alike, Old Testament Commentary Survey makes finding the best Old Testament commentaries easy. In this fourth edition, Longman focuses on the best of established commentaries and commentaries published in recent years. He lists a number of works available for each book of the Old Testament, gives a brief indication of their emphases and viewpoints, and evaluates them. Longman also indicates who would most benefit from the commentary under consideration (scholar, minister, layperson). Finally, he summarizes his top recommendations for those trying to build a library that covers every book of the Old Testament. The result is a balanced, sensible guide for those who preach and teach the Old Testament and need help in choosing the best tools.

1 out of 5 stars A very flat two dimensional read.......2007-10-16

Despite earlier reviews, I bought this book because it promised a converted woman's story. I also purchased Shattered Dreams, and His Favorite Wife, on the polygamous side of Mormonism. I started this one first because I am not Mormon, and I wanted to read about this woman's motivation for switching from "Christian" to the Mormon church. Not even halfway through and my other two books arrived- I put this one down out of sheer bordeom.
Picking it up again, I am still not halfway through, and probably will not get much further.
As for compelling reasons for joining Mormonism, it seems the author was chasing some sort of illusion of happiness. Her biased view from the very start did little to enlighten me. Her kids and husband are barely mentioned, I don't even recall their names. It is a very shallow, superficial read with a lot of, "I thought...this" and "I thought....that."
Not particularly worth the time or the money. There are many better books out there. If you are looking for shock value, Secret Ceremonies by Deborah Laake tells of the same rituals and doctrine with a better attitude.
If you are looking for real trials and tribulation, the above mentioned books are real page-turners: Susan Shmidt and Irene Spencer for a look into the LeBaron family, or any of Dorothy Allred's books.

                                      1 out of 5 stars Pathetic........2007-09-12

This is the pathetic sob story of a woman who rushed into something she did not understand, and then, because she had no desire or spirit to try to learn what it all means, had a panic attack, was caught up in trivial, petty details and decided to break eternal covenants rather than learn what they actually mean. I understand that she was frightened and confused, but her book is dripping with bitterness, ignorance and childish whining. All I took away from her experience is that she is a woman who has no idea who she really is and what she really believes. She expected a handout, and when she didn't get it, threw a tantrum and burned everything that reminded her of the lies she had taught herself about a very intriguing and fascinating way of life.

If you really want to read something about the LDS church and its practices, I would recommend something that is able to actually show what it's like from both sides. ANYTHING but this, at least! You can even read something written by a non-LDS author, as long as it's not emotionally-charged and full of trumped-up half-truths, as well as flat-out lies. Just because it's her perception doesn't mean it's true. Besides that, she reveals many things that the church considers extremely sacred. How would a Catholic feel if the innermost dealings of the Vatican were revealed in an irreverent and sacrilegious manner? It's just sloppy ethics, and poor writing to boot. It's almost humorous.

Of course, if you REALLY wanted to know what the LDS church is about, I suppose you COULD go straight to the source, but then, what's the point in that? You wouldn't want to find out the truth, would you?

5 out of 5 stars Really Scary, I love the bravery the author showed.......2007-07-31

...it is so sad millions of others are afraid to do the same for fear of what outcomes may occur!

Women will read this and run for the hills...but not the hills of Utah where isolation, imprisonment and slavery is accepted for people of their gender. They will run to get away from an awful mindset that creates something far worse than what so many deem a "cult" if you will. This is not about faith, but about a women who realized that this is a business built on money and power taken from people in exchange for getting special treatment by the church. I interviewed a man a while back who had, with his family left the church. I asked him why he left, and he said that they had fallen on hard financial times and because of that asked to be forgiven for not paying the expected percentage of tithing. The result, he said was that he was ostricised by the church and the women of the church would no longer speak to her. On top of that he said that he was not allowed to advance to any positions of leadership within the church despite showing up when asked and putting in countless hours of effort for goodwill towards fellow churchgoers and functions.

Judy describes the nature of this business with great emotion and it is enough to make one cry to think anyone in this country could be subjected to such treatment. The women are treated like grazing cattle, being used as something to merely reproduce in order to reach higher levels of heaven. The insight into Joseph Smith is minimal but upon further research it is obvious this man did not have any connection to any god whatsoever, going so far as to commit a gaggle of crimes year after year before his untimely demise by a community that got fed up with his nonsense and unpunished crimes.

One of the best books out there on mormonism, but be sure to also check out Inside Mormonismas it will go into the history of lies and crimes that surround Joseph Smith both before and after his founding of this church.

2 out of 5 stars Only for Christians.......2006-08-06

I am an "ethnic Mormon". My ancestors were some of the first people who settled the Salt Lake Valley, my grandparents gave birth to 16 children (including my mother) in a devout Mormon farming family. I was raised going to church by Jack Mormon (my mother & her husband did not attend church) parents in California. I left the church 30 years ago in reaction to the Mormon church excommunicating feminist Sonia Johnston because of her stand on the ERA. Mormonism, which is a huge part of my family roots and culture, is an interest of mine and I read many books and articles on people who have left "the church". This book, however, was a bit of disappointment for me. Although I found parts of it interesting and validating of my own knowledge of Mormon culture, it was written primarily for those who are interested in becoming or returning to born again Christianity. I attend an "omnifaith" church in which all paths to truth, God, and spirit are respected. I was troubled by the Robertsons organizing to speak out against Mormons, as I would be by people organizing to speak out against any other belief system. I would recommend this book ONLY to people who are Christians who are concerned about family members who have converted to Mormonism or who are leaving the Mormons to become or return to Christianty. To others, there are much better books about the shortcomings of the Mormon religion.

Mormonism is nothing more than a giant CULT. While it is not as controlling as the Jehovah Witness cult or Scientology, it still destroys lives. We need more books like this one before more people are blackmailed and controlled by cults. By Christian Peper

This story was filled with passion and adventure, which came as no surprise to me. After reading so many of Sandra Marton's novels, I come to expect the best from her, and she always delivers. Gray and Dawn are two very fleshed out characters that you come to love. Their interaction with one another is dynamic!

Sandra Marton is by far my favorite author. She always stirs feelings in me with her 3-dimensional characters. This book is right up there with all her other novels. I've read at least 20 of her books and I still can't get enough. Check out her other novels and be sure not to miss the rest of this series. I'm sorry it had to come to an end. But as an added bonus her next series is set up in this one. Don't miss the O'Connells!

RAISING THE STAKES tackles a rough subject and makes it into a testament to the human spirit. Dawn is a meek heroine, who turns into a tigress for her loved ones and will do whatever is necessary to protect them. Gray carries around his own baggage, which can seem a bit forced at times, but in no way detracts from his yumminess. The secondary characters are fun, and I
seriously hope that Keir gets his own book soon. Ms. Marton is a strong writer who breathes life into her book.

I loved this book! The hero is the kind of man who knows how to make a woman feel protected and cherished. I knew this book was about the Baron family and I've read a couple of Sandra Marton's Baron books but not all of them. I wondered if the story would make sense without me having read all the books in the series. It does. The story is deep, touching and wonderful. I was just sorry to get to the last page.

Her vivid descriptions and use of imagery bring this story to life. Gray and Dawn are very likeable and sympathetic characters that have such an intense bond and chemistry that it leaps from the page. This is a definite must-read for the summer.

More and more states require students to pass large-scale tests as a condition of promotion or graduation. What are the forces that have pushed high-stakes testing to the forefront of K-12 educational policy? Are such tests the best way to gauge educational attainment? This volume, commissioned by the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University, examines the economic and educational assumptions underlying the call for high-stakes tests.

                                            Book Description

This book studies the effects of incorporating market incentives into the public goods arena. Carol Graham examines the effects of market-based strategies on the performance of public institutions, the political sustainability of market reforms, and equity. In so doing, she examines a variety of reform experiences in the realms of education, health, social security, and state-owned enterprises and across a range of country and income contexts, with case studies drawn from Latin America, Africa, and Eastern Europe. The studies show that the incorporation of new market incentives, such as vouchers in education and private social security systems, can have positive effects on the performance of public institutions. The effects on equity are less clear, however, and in many cases efficiency gains entail short-term equity losses. The poorest sectors are usually least equipped to take advantage of new incentives and may be marginalized from the reforms and lose access to essential services. Yet in the long-term, negative equity effects are usually counter-balanced by the benefits of enhancing the performance of public institutions. As this book makes clear, the issues explored have relevance for advanced industrial societies as well as for developing economies.

                                                      Book Description

Raising the Stakes provides an understanding of the breadth of resources that are needed in order to provide a quality education to all students so that every individual, organisation and institution can become a stakeholder in the enterprise. This comprehensive book draws on best practice in several countries to show how resources can be allocated to help achieve high expectations for all schools. The book demonstrates how schools can move from satisfaction with improvement to accepting the challenge to transform, identifying and exploring the need to align four kinds of resources: Intellectual capital, that is, the knowledge and skill of talented professionals; Social capital, being support in the form of cash, expertise and advocacy drawn from a range of individuals, organisations, agencies and institutions in the broader community; Financial capital, which must be carefully targeted to ensure that these resources are aligned and focused on priorities for learning; and finally, Spiritual capital, which canbe viewed in a religious sense or in terms of the culture and values that bring coherence and unity to these endeavours. The authors also outline a Student-Focused Planning Model with particular attention to the deployment of resources to support each student and embracing the notion of personalising learning.Practitioners and researchers reading this book will be inspired to work more closely in networking knowledge about how Â`high qualityÂ' and Â`high equityÂ' can be achieved. Raising the Stakes is essential reading for those with the responsibility of ensuring that resources are acquired and allocated to achieve the best possible outcomes for students.

                                                        Book Description

Truman, Eisenhower, Johnson, Nixon, Reagan, G. H. Bush, Clinton, George W. Bush. No president has been publicly tried for committing a war crime. Yet these presidents have committed them while invoking threats of Communism, terrorism and the loss of American lives.

To win popular support for these foreign adventures, these presidents have lied to the American people, resulting in the loss of millions of innocent lives as in Vietnam or Iraq. These actions clearly violated international law and constituted war crimes.

David Model is a professor of political science and economics at Seneca College in Toronto. He has previously written People Before Profits: Reversing the Corporate Agenda and Corporate Rule: Understanding and Challenging the New World Order.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing too new........2006-07-26

Ok, the # of stars this book should get is conditional upon how much you have already looked into U.S. foreign policy. If you are just getting into this sort of stuff, then I would give this book 4 stars. However, if you have already read most of the standard texts (Herman, Blum, Chomsky, etc.) then you will basically be getting recycled versions of that. In fact a huge portion of the book is in text quotations from such authors.

Now, the book puts forth a dual thesis. Model sets out to prove that all the U.S. presidents covered willfully committed war-crimes, crimes against humanity and/or other breaches of international law. In regards to this, Model saves the end of each chapter to show exactly which International Laws, treaties, etc. were violated, as well as documenting the specific lies told by the administrations. These sections are done very well, giving you the exact wording of the International Agreements.

The other claim Model makes is that these actions were perpetrated with the intent of expanding the American Empire. Well, he basically forgets about this for most of the book. He will usually pay lip-service to this a few times per chapters, but he never actually delves into this.

In conclusion, this book is good if it is serving as your introduction to such matters, providing good historical context and quotations of seminal works on the subject. However, you might feel a bit cheated if you are well-read in this genre because of the lack of new revilations and the amount of recycled material.
