Book Description
Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces covers a wide range of information from basic facts about holomorphic functions of several complex variables through deep results such as subelliptic estimates for the ?-Neumann problem on pseudoconvex domains with a real analytic boundary. The book focuses on describing the geometry of a real hypersurface in a complex vector space by understanding its relationship with ambient complex analytic varieties. You will learn how to decide whether a real hypersurface contains complex varieties, how closely such varieties can contact the hypersurface, and why it's important. The book concludes with two sets of problems: routine problems and difficult problems (many of which are unsolved). Principal prerequisites for using this book include a thorough understanding of advanced calculus and standard knowledge of complex analysis in one variable. Several Complex Variables and the Geometry of Real Hypersurfaces will be a useful text for advanced graduate students and professionals working in complex analysis.

At last brought to the U.S., the best-selling comics adaptation of the great classic of French literature that scandalized the French establishment as reported on the front page of the New York Times! Step back into a world of insightful reflection as Proust is brought back, through the legendary magic of the smell of a madeleine, to his youth in a small town of France.

It's like the Illustrated Classics have returned in graphic novel form........2006-09-21
Stephane Heuet, Remembrance of Things Past: Combray (ComicsLit, 1998)
Stephane Heuet has taken on the unenviable, and quite Herculean, task of adapting Marcel Proust's vast Remembrance of Things Past and adapting it into graphic novel form. Combray, the opening part of the novel Swann's Way, is the first offering in the series.
This is not your typical graphic novel, but then one would be hard-pressed to adapt Remembrance... in traditional graphic novel form. There's a whole lot of exposition, and many pretty pictures, and very little dialogue. Heuet's people look more than a tad like Herge's, which has me constantly wondering when Snowy and the Captain are going to barge into any given scene, but that's a minor distraction. The story is-- obviously-- abridged, but it still serves, so far, as a fine introduction to Proust for, say, the high-school set. ***
I can finally run for presidency.......2005-08-27
As a slow reader, I always favored "bande desinees" [graphic novels]. At the annual picnic of my wife's employer, the french dept of a university, I can finally converse with her collegues and actually sound smart. I can even, what can I say, run for Presidency 2008. Oops: that would overqualify me...
Really interesting. Maybe I should now challenge myself to read the real thing...
your kids will love french litterature .... at last!.......2002-09-29
For the first time, Marguerite (11), Louis (16) did understand and appreciate what Proust means for the rest of us! When I brought them to Illiers (the actual name of Combray village, near Chartres)we asked the "boulanger" for "Proust-madeleine" cakes. But he does not make them anymore. Some shops are for sale, there. Maybe one of Amazon.com readers should settle down and start a "Proust-cake" business there. This book is terrific because the graphics are as "bon-goût" as the text.
Toujours, Proust et A La Recherche.......2001-09-01
How incredible to find my much beloved Proust placed in my equally beloved comics format! At last, the astoundingly complex and beautiful novel is being made more accessible to the masses. The simplistic Eurocomics style is perfect in the uncomplicating process. Heuet has quite adroitly whittled away to the essence. This can hopefully serve as an introduction to the masterwork; at very least, it will acquaint more with what may indeed be the greatest novel of the 20th Century. I was particularly pleased at the attention paid to Proust's droll humor. Can't wait for the next installment. A profound addition to the often mundane plethora of graphic novels.
Highly recommended for all graphic novel fans in general.......2001-06-07
Stephane Heuet successfully adapts Marcel Proust's Remembrance Of Things Past into the format of a graphic novel in the first volume of a planned 12 volume series. The result is an impressive work that will aptly serve to introduce a whole new generation of readers to an outstanding example of French literature. Indeed, it was Proust's cogent and discerning observations that in the hands of graphic artist Stephane Heuet that provides today's readers with a revealing and engaging examination of a time when life was more bucolic, less stressful, and contemplation friendly than life today. This NBM edition of Remembrance Of Things Past is highly recommended for all graphic novel fans in general, and Marcel Proust enthusiasts in particular!
Product Description
Although 30 years have passed, the allure of the Amityville house with its eye-like windows has yet to diminish. Amidst the stories of demonic pigs and ghostly apparitions, the real horror story remained a mystery...until now. Read what the experts are saying about The Night the DeFeos Died: "As compelling as Truman Capote's In Cold Blood," says Jordan Rich of WBZ Radio Boston. "The Night the DeFeos Died, is, in my opinion, the most factual work ever published on the incident and everything that took place after that horrific evening," says Doug Spero, Emmy award-winning journalist with NBC and CBS who covered the DeFeo murders and the hoax. On November 13, 1974, police received a report of a homicide at 112 Ocean Avenue, where they discovered six members of the DeFeo family -- father, mother and four of their five children -- shot and killed execution style. The surviving son, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr., was eventually charged and tried for the murder of his family and is currently serving six concurrent life sentences. Some theorized that Ronald DeFeo Jr. was a sociopath turned killer. Others reasoned that Ronald DeFeo Jr. had to be possessed by the devil or insane in order to shoot and kill the slumbering family he adored. To this day, questions remain, such as: Why did it appear that six members of the DeFeo family slept through eight high-powered gunshots? Why were all of the victims found in the same position in their beds? Three decades later, author Ric Osuna strips away the mystery surrounding one of the world's most notorious events and provides definitive answers to questions that have been left unanswered over the years about the case. Ric Osuna's The Night the DeFeos Died offers incontrovertible proof of the true motives behind this terrible tragedy and reveals Ronald DeFeo Jr. did not act alone in the commission of this crime. The Night the DeFeos Died exposes the unprecedented coverup that was instigated at the highest levels by police, attorneys, judges, and even the Mafia. The Night the DeFeos Died will offer evidence to support the claim that the supernatural stories were created as part of Ronald DeFeo, Jr.'s defense and were a hoax. This book finally puts to rest the false myths and misinformation surrounding the Amityville case.
Customer Reviews:
Are we any closer to the truth?.......2007-09-17
As a Long Islander who grew up with the books, the movies and the myths, this book caught my attention enough to actually make it the first true crime book I've ever read.
At best, THE NIGHT THE DEFEOS DIED is an entertaining, page-turning read. However, because the book deals mostly with facts that are derived from murderer Butch DeFeo, whom the author admit has lied many times over to accomodate his situations and circumstances, the accounts of what happend the night the DeFeos died can only be concluded as another version of what happened and not necessarily the truth.
In the end, I felt I learned more truths about George and Kathy Lutz and the con artists that they were when they concocted the entire hoax that would become the Amityville horror legend.
So as I said; entertaining, yes. Truth? Not necessarilty. Just another version of what COULD have happened. Like the Kennedy assassination, we may never know what really happened the night the DeFeos died.
The Conspiracy Continues.......2007-09-14
I really thought when i had stumbed onto the authors website that finally someone was going to find the truth in this "going on 30 yr old case". Enough evidence is present to justify that Ronald Defeo Jr. did not act alone in these murders, this however is OLD NEWS!! This entire book is based on the story of a woman who "claims" she was married to Defeo when the murders took place and that mob members destroyed all records of the marriage to protect her identity, OMG, is she related to the Lutz's??? From what rock did she "levitate" from under??? None the less folks, it is an ok read and a must for any "amityville" book collection, other than that dont get to many "high hopes" as to many more facts on this case beside the fact there is still some money to be made from this unfortunate event!! Peace, Ken
A Night Of Horror.......2007-05-03
I just finished this book it is very interesting and gives you a whole new look at the Amityville story.
I gave this book four stars because some parts about the court section was a bore but overall the book was pretty good. it is not a ghost story but a true horror story. the book tells us what really went on in the DeFeo family.
The book also tells us how the whole Amityville horror story was put together
by George and Kathy Lutz over a few bottles of wine. This book does explain a lot and makes a lot of sense. I always thought the Amityville Horror story was in part a true story but after reading this book I just do not know anymore.
A great read.......2007-04-04
Great book, full of information. I felt like the author took the time to really research and want the truth.
Interesting read.......2006-04-18
I saw the movie "The Amityville Horror" as a kid and was as scared as any kid would be. This book tells the story of what lead up to the events that happened in that house, which is much more interesting and intriguing. Well worth the read

Book Description
The Night the DeFeos Died: Reinvestigating the Amityville Murders, finally puts to rest the false myths and misinformation surrounding events that shocked the world more than a quarter century ago.
On November 13, 1974, police received a report of a homicide at 112 Ocean Avenue in the Village of Amityville, New York, a sleepy seaside community located on Long Island's South Shore. Once there, the police discovered six members of the DeFeo family -- father, mother and four of their five children -- shot and killed execution style. The surviving son, Ronald "Butch" DeFeo Jr., was eventually charged and tried for the murder of his family and now is serving six concurrent life sentences.
Over the years, many contrived myths and legends have endured about the DeFeo murders and the Dutch Colonial house in Amityville. Some theorized a strong supernatural force in the DeFeo home drove Butch DeFeo to kill his family, while others claimed Butch DeFeo killed to receive an inheritance. The Night the DeFeos Died offers incontrovertible proof of the true motives behind this terrible tragedy and reveals Butch DeFeo did not act alone in the commission of this crime. It also shows that the supernatural stories created about the famed Amityville house were nothing but a ruse concocted by Butch DeFeo's defense attorney.

A good book .......2006-03-06
This book is ideal for anyone wanting an alternative take on the Amityville story.
Not exactly sure how much of this is true. Mr Osuna has been labelled a liar by Butch Defeo and his wife Tracey for the way he has portrayed the story of his family. Still a good book though and definitley gives you something to think about.
Rollercoaster ride of a book!.......2005-07-19
Wow, what a read!I have always been interested in the DeFeo case.I was really looking forward to Mr. Osuna's book. When I recieved, I started reading it right away. I couldn't put it down.I laughed, cried and got angry while reading about the DeFeo's. It's so sad that money and power can lead to mental and physical abuse.I thought of Allison: Shy, sweet, who only needed to be told she was cared for. Jon Matthew and Mark: Full of energy, always on the go. Scared of what tomorrow would hold by the anger from an abusive father.I think of Dawn and her mother. I still think. Why put up with it? Why? Mrs. DEFeo, what really happened?Mr. Osuna interviewed relatives, friends and the police to get the true story of the real Amityville horror.I feel he was fair and respectful to the DeFeo's.The story will always be of interest for many years to come.Thank you Mr. Osuna for telling the "true" story. Those poor, innocent children had no one to defend them..you came to their rescue.
Trust the negative reviews, folks!.......2005-01-22
Because this book is utter tripe. The lack of any substantiated facts, and atrocious grammar and writing made me glad I borrowed instead of buying it. It is seriously that bad. A co-worker recently informed me that the author used to be friends with George Lutz and completely believed in the Lutzes' version of the haunting; and only after a falling out with him did the author get on this hokey Defeo bandwagon. Futhermore, I read the reviews on here right after this book was published, and there were FAR more negative reviews than there are now. So, perhaps the real ghost/murder story here is how the author made them vanish/die???
Absolutely pitiful.......2004-10-07
Many reviews will just glow with how Ric Osuna presents such a great new angle on the case. What he presents is something even harder to swallow than demons. The spelling and grammar mistakes are inexcusable and should be enough to discredit him without me having to go any further. It shows his unbelievable lack of intelligence.
But putting that aside, his lack of intelligence is even better illustrated by his complete lack of logic. His claims are backed up by no evidence and heavily rely on assumptions. He expects the reader to trust him and for that to be enough.
But most of all, this man has no idea what demonic spirits are capable of or what a demonic attack is like. He should have researched that a little before he tried to discredit the story of one. For anyone who wants to better understand this, read "The Demonologist" by Gerald Brittle. That will give you a better idea of why all of this "evidence" against the case is irrelevant.
Can O Worms.......2004-08-30
I Thought The Book Was Excellent, (If True). Towards The end Ric Osuna, Says butch Is A very Bitter Man, And Sues Just About Anyone He Has A problem With. I Read Another review And They Say Butch Is suing Ric Osuna! Now It's Near Imposible To Get The Book, And Osuna's Two Websites Are Not reachable, What Gives. Is He hiding His profit?

A young woman named Julia Butterfly Hill climbed a 200-foot redwood in December 1997. She didn't come down for 738 days. The tree, dubbed Luna, grows in the coastal hills of Northern California, on land owned by the Maxxam Corporation. In 1985 Maxxam acquired the previous landlord, Pacific Lumber, then proceeded to "liquidate its assets" to pay off the debt--in other words, clear-cut the old-growth redwood forest. Environmentalists charged the company with harvesting timber at a nonsustainable level. Earth First! in particular devised tree sit-ins to protest the logging. When Hill arrived on the scene after traveling cross-country on a whim, loggers were preparing to clear-cut the hillside where Luna had been growing for 1,000 years. The Legacy of Luna, part diary, part treatise, and part New Age spiritual journey, is the story of Julia Butterfly Hill's two-year arboreal odyssey.
The daughter of an itinerant preacher, Hill writes of her chance meeting with California logging protesters, the blur of events leading to her ascent of the redwood, and the daily privations of living in the tallest treehouse on earth. She weathers everything from El Niño rainstorms to shock-jock media storms. More frightening are her interactions with the loggers below, who escalate the game of chicken by cutting dangerously close to Luna (eventually succeeding at killing another activist with such tactics). "'You'd better get ready for a bad hair day!'" one logger shouts up, grimly anticipating the illegal helicopter hazing she would soon get. Celebrity environmentalists like Joan Baez and Woody Harrelson stop by, too. The notoriety has, on balance, been good to Hill and her cause. George magazine named her one of the "Ten Most Fascinating People in Politics," Good Housekeeping readers nominated her one of the "Most Admired Women" in 1998, and she was featured in People's "Most Intriguing People of the Year" issue. As a result, more Americans know about controversial forestry practices; it remains to be seen, however, whether public outrage is enough to save California's unprotected and ever-shrinking groves of redwoods. While an agreement allowed Hill to descend from her aerie and Luna to escape the saw, most of the surrounding old-growth forest in the region has been felled or will fall shortly. Still, Hill is optimistic: "Luna is only one tree. We will save her, but we will lose others. The more we stand up and demand change, though, the more things will improve." --Langdon Cook
Book Description
On December 18, 1999, Julia Butterfly Hill's feet touched the ground for the first time in over two years, as she descended from "Luna," a thousandyear-old redwood in Humboldt County, California.
Hill had climbed 180 feet up into the tree high on a mountain on December 10, 1997, for what she thought would be a two- to three-week-long "tree-sit." The action was intended to stop Pacific Lumber, a division of the Maxxam Corporation, from the environmentally destructive process of clear-cutting the ancient redwood and the trees around it. The area immediately next to Luna had already been stripped and, because, as many believed, nothing was left to hold the soil to the mountain, a huge part of the hill had slid into the town of Stafford, wiping out many homes.
Over the course of what turned into an historic civil action, Hill endured El Nino storms, helicopter harassment, a ten-day siege by company security guards, and the tremendous sorrow brought about by an old-growth forest's destruction. This story--written while she lived on a tiny platform eighteen stories off the ground--is one that only she can tell.
Twenty-five-year-old Julia Butterfly Hill never planned to become what some have called her--the Rosa Parks of the environmental movement. Shenever expected to be honored as one of Good Housekeeping's "Most Admired Women of 1998" and George magazine's "20 Most Interesting Women in Politics," to be featured in People magazine's "25 Most Intriguing People of the Year" issue, or to receive hundreds of letters weekly from young people around the world. Indeed, when she first climbed into Luna, she had no way of knowing the harrowing weather conditions and the attacks on her and her cause. She had no idea of the loneliness she would face or that her feet wouldn't touch ground for more than two years. She couldn't predict the pain of being an eyewitness to the attempted destruction of one of the last ancient redwood forests in the world, nor could she anticipate the immeasurable strength she would gain or the life lessons she would learn from Luna. Although her brave vigil and indomitable spirit have made her a heroine in the eyes of many, Julia's story is a simple, heartening tale of love, conviction, and the profound courage she has summoned to fight for our earth's legacy.

A Book That Inspired Me to Do My part to Help the Environment.......2006-12-20
A wonderful book about environmental activism that left my inspired to do more to save our great forests and outraged by what the major timber companies are doing to our old growth forests and the environment. I particulary felt disgust and sadness for the disregard by Pacific Timber Corp for trees that were centuries old and using diesel fuel, napalm and other harmful chemicals/substances on pristine areas. Profit at any cost is unfortunatley what it is about. It was refreshing to learn of Julia's stand against all odds. A great book that everyone should read.
Interesting Read.......2006-08-21
I read this in one day, it's almost as if reading a letter from a friend. I had heard about the woman who sat in a Redwood Tree in California, and after seeing the documentary about it, I had to read the book. The writing isn't outstanding, but I got everything I'd hoped for: A detailed description of life in Luna, which is amazing to say the least, and a much better insight on the activism to preserve old growth forests. I couldn't put it down. Read it for another perspective on life, and to learn more about Julia Butterfly Hill: A truly amazing activist.
Saving our environment.......2006-03-04
I had seen the documentary and was interested to read the book. It was enjoyable, well written and an interesting report of a woman's total belief in what she was doing, along with her lessons in dealing with the very personal issues and fears that arose in her. An easy read and worthwhile.
Julia Butterfly Hill: A Woman Literally Up a Tree.......2005-12-16
Julia Butterfly Hill's father taught her a good lesson early in her life. The lesson was to stand up for what you believe in and not to give up. Julia obviously took this to heart. In her mid twenties she was looking for a meaning in her life. So she sold many of her valuables, "hit the road", and came into contact with an organization that was involved in the fight to save the redwoods. One of their main actions against the chopping of these trees is to put people up in a tree on a small platform for about a week.
Soon after meeting people in the "Earth First" organization, Julia managed to sign up and sit in a tree. After a week she was more than willing to come down, but she was back up not too long after. But she became very sick and needed a long time to recover after her trip back down. When she found out that the association was having a hard time finding people to stay in the tree, she saw a solution: she would stay up in Luna (the tree she had spent time in before and was going to spend a lot more time in) for an extended period. The longer she stayed in Luna the harder it got: the weather worsened, the Pacific Lumber corporation which was targeting cutting down Luna started pressing harder and harder for her to come down, and even the corporation she supposedly was signed up with started to turn their back on her and beg her to come down. But with the lesson from her dad, her faith, and the friends she had made inside the corporation, she stayed up for longer, and longer, and longer.
After her one hundred day mark in Luna, she started to become a very popular news target. Pretty much all day and night she was part of interviews, meetings and the growing struggle to save the redwoods. The people of Pacific Lumber really started to get ticked and did all they could to get her down. There were bills and pressure so they could finally have Luna in their own hands. But then an employee of this company started to treat her as a person and give her respect. John Campbell was the person who finally started to negotiate with Julia and respected her. They finally came to an agreement about a year and a half into her sit, but when she was supposed to come down, things got messed up with the agreement, so she still had to wait and sit and interview. But then came the fateful day about sixth months later in which she got a call that informed her that Luna and a buffer zone around her were safe. After two years in the tree, she had done her job, Luna was safe. So on December 18, 1999, Julia Butterfly Hill descended Luna and touched ground in the first time in two years.
The Legacy of Luna was an enjoyable read with a good message, but I did have mixed feelings about it. While reading this book, you see that Julia is a unique person. She has a very broad faith and is very extreme in her love for Luna. At some times she would pray to Luna, and I found that to be a little weird, but then again I wasn't with this tree for 24/4 for 730 days. Also the book does get a little confusing when it starts to talk about the political essence of the tree sit. I don't know if it was just me, a high school student with little experience in this area, or if it was poorly explained, but I did get lost easily. I would recommend this book to someone who was excited in the environment and in the saving of the forest, but probably not for a Sunday afternoon read.
Good book - Inspiring - Short on details.......2005-05-01
First the book was inspiring having been out of the "Environmental Movement" for 15 years, it was a breath of fresh air on a personal level. This is motivation to do more, to put action to the rhetoric. It brought into focus the simple fact that we are all connected to this living planet via creation.
As I read I was left wanting more details. More information about the people in the book. I would like to see a daily journal. It was a little disjointed in places... jumping from one thought to the next with out clear transitions.
It still is a great book and worth the money and time to read. I read it in 2 days... quick read.
