5 out of 5 stars A Must for Any Future Sport Administrator.......2000-09-27

This book is for anyone who ever wanted the inside information on how some of sports top exuctives got their start. I was delighted to see that all contributors mentioned internships in their personal climb to the top. The book and its contents inspired me to work hard from the bottom of the job totem pole to the top. The book also gave practical information on how to get started and who to talk to. I would recommend this book to anyone graduating from college and those who are already in the field for some insiders advice. A very insightful and interesting book!

                          Book Description

As children, Virginia Woolf, sister Vanessa Bell, and brother Thoby, collaborated on their own family newspaper. Published here for the first time ever, the Hyde Park Gate News also includes their original drawings. Ingeniously mimicking the style of the leading newspapers of their day, the Stephen children—Virginia, Vanessa, and Thoby—present a charming and candid portrayal of the day-to-day events at the family home in London and at their holiday home in St Ives. Gossipy, playful, and at times irreverent, they record the comings and goings of a host of figures while also proffering their own fictional, poetic, and artistic creations. Virginia Woolf is one of the most important figures of the Modernist Movement; her sister Vanessa Bell was a painter and a central figure of the Bloomsbury Group.

Early in 1998, New York Times science reporter and author Gina Kolata happened to be seated at a banquet next to the Nobel Prize-winning scientist James Watson. When Kolata asked Watson what was new in the world of science, he replied, "Judah Folkman and angiogenesis, that's what's new. Judah is going to cure cancer in two years."

Folkman, a longtime physician and medical researcher at Harvard University and Children's Hospital, was caught off guard by the excited news reports that followed Watson's remark, but there was good reason for excitement. For nearly four decades, when not busy doing such things as inventing the heart pacemaker and attending to hundreds of patients, Folkman had been puzzling out a peculiarity of tumors: at some point during their formation, they sent forth chemical signals that in effect "recruited" blood vessels to feed them. If those signals could be intercepted through well-targeted drugs, Folkman reasoned, and the blood supply to cancerous formations thus interrupted, then the tumors themselves might be starved to death, or at least to dormancy.

In this book, Newsday writer Robert Cooke offers an accessible account of Folkman's work on angiogenesis, or the formation of blood vessels, which may well point the way to new treatments for cancer and related illnesses. Following Folkman's roundabout trail, one marked by considerable resistance on the part of doubtful colleagues, readers will gain a sense of how medical research is conducted--and, almost certainly, a sense of wonder at the medical breakthroughs that, as James Watson hinted, are just around the corner. --Gregory McNamee

                          Book Description

In 1961, twenty-eight-year-old Dr. Judah Folkman saw something while doing medical research in a United

States navy lab that gave him the first glimmering of a wild, inspired hunch. What if cancerous tumors, in order to expand, needed to trigger the growth of new blood vessels to feed themselves? And if that was true, what if a way could be found to stop that growth? Could cancers be starved to death? Dr. Folkman had ample reason to be self confident — second in his class at Harvard Medical School, he was already considered one of the most promising doctors of his generation. But even he never guessed that his idea would eventually grow into a multibillion-dollar industry that is now racing through human trials with drugs that show unparalleled promise of being able to control cancer, as well as other deadly diseases.

For the creation of this book, Dr. Judah Folkman cooperated fully and exclusively with acclaimed science writer Robert Cooke. He granted Cooke unlimited interviews, showed him diaries and personal papers, and threw open the doors of his lab. The result is an astonishingly rich and candid chronicle of one of the most significant medical discoveries of our time and of the man whose vision and persistence almost single-handedly has made it possible.

Dr. Folkman's radical new way of thinking about cancer was once considered preposterous. So little was known about how cancer spreads and how blood vessels grow that he wasn't even taken seriously enough to be considered a heretic. Other doctors shook their heads at the waste of a great mind, and ambitious young medical researchers were told that accepting a position in Folkman's lab would be the death of their careers. Now, though, the overwhelming majority of experts believes that the day will soon come when antiangiogenesis therapy supplants the current more toxic and less-effective treatments — chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery-as the preferred method of treatment for cancer in patients around the world, and Dr. Folkman's breakthrough will come to be taken for granted the way we now take for granted the polio vaccine and antibiotics.

Dr. Folkman's War brilliantly describes how high the odds are against success in medical research, how vicious the competition for grants, how entrenched the skepticism about any genuinely original thinking, how polluted by politics and commerce the process of getting medicine into patients' hands. But it also depicts with rare power how exalted a calling medicine can be and how for the rare few—the brilliant, the tireless, and the lucky — the results of success can be world-changing.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Folkmans War.......2005-10-03

This book is a very well done documentary of the trials Dr. Folkman went through to have his ideas on cancer treatment considered. His ideas are now becoming the new approach, offering much needed hope for patients and their families. For anyone interested in cancer, this book is worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars Dr. Folkman is my hero -- a story better than SeaBiscuit!.......2003-11-12

This book by Robert Cooke is incredible! Mr. Cooke is able to explain to the average layperson the medical concepts of angeiogeneis conceived by the most under-valued person of our time: Dr. Judah Folkman. Dr. Folkman is to cancer what Salk was to Polio! Personally, Dr. Judah Folkman is my hero! A real hero, deserving of the Nobel Prize....and I don't speak lightly. I am a cancer patient that has recently learned that my cancer (thought was beat) has advanced to my lungs. The ONLY therapy for me is in an ANGIOGENESIS drug therapy program for a drug currently in study and labeled as "PI-88." I am just so confident this drug will work. I am the only patient with my type of cancer cell (adenoid cystic carninoma), so I am a little bit more of a lab rat for this program.

God Bless Dr. Folkman and h is incredible perserverance! His story should be a movie----a tale better than SeaBiscuit! He is my SeaBiscuit!

5 out of 5 stars Cure for cancer?.......2002-02-07

Chances are someone close to you has succumbed to the ravages of cancer, while you and the medical establishment could only sit by and watch the process reach its inevitable conclusion. The good news is, for nearly 40 years, Dr. Judah Folkman has been pursuing a cure for cancer -- or at least a way to fight tumors more effectively than chemotherapy or radiation -- that only until very recently has garnered serious attention. Dr. Folkman's theory is called angiogenesis, the process by which cancer cells emit an agent which triggers the growth of blood vessels to feed the growth of the cancer itself. For years Dr. Folkman's idea was basically scoffed at as the flailings of an amateur researcher, but Cooke shows how Dr. Folkman has perservered -- while maintaining his brilliant career as a physician -- and eventually, through a slow accumulation of experimental evidence, as well as the discovery of several antiangionesis agents, turned opinion around. Throughout this engaging and fascinating retelling of Folkman's journey, Cooke also provides an eye-opening account of the workings of academia, medical research, and their relationships to those Orwellian biotech companies you keep hearing about. The science is clear and vivid, the battle to defeat cancer inspiring, and the promise of victory -- thankfully, finally -- just around the corner.

2 out of 5 stars interesting story, but .............2001-12-01

I work in this field of research. I do like the story of the persistance and creativity of Judah Folkman. However, the author stumbles in describing some of the science and the intellectual contributions of others that led to some of the Folkman lab's discoveries. After reading the reviewers' praise for Mr. Cooke's "detailed research " on the book's back cover, I was diappointed by some obvious errors in the book. I believe that most of the innaccuracies are the unfortunate result of the author's failure to corroborate all of his facts. He may have been in a hurry to get the book out, but I wish that he had taken a little more time to get the science and other facts straight.

Almonte's Texas is a fascinating historical study of the role of Col. Juan N. Almonte, who was sent to Texas by the Mexican government to determine whether the northern territory would be lost to North American colonists. His detailed, secret report with his recommendations for keeping Texas under Mexican control, as well as the fifty letters he wrote during his inspection and his role as special adviser to Santa Anna, are all revealed in this astounding primary source that astute captures a crucial perspective on history itself.

The wordly Almonte is an observant guide to the world that was Texas y Coahuila in the mid-19th century. Sent by Santa Ana in 1834 to inspect and report on the troublesome Texas, Almonte did that in the form of a secret report. He also wrote letters about the situation and when Santa Ana marched into Texas in 1836 Almonte was with him. This book contains the report, letters and the diary, along with maps and excerpts from other contemporary sources. The accompanying commentary allows even the novice to understand the material and appreciate its importance to Texas history.

Lt. General Mike DeLong, deputy commander of the U.S. Central Command during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, was second only to General Tommy Franks in the war on terror. At the center of discussions between President Bush, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, and Tommy Franks, General DeLong offers the frankest and most authoritative look inside the wars-how we prepared for battle, how we fought, how we toppled two regimes-and what's happening now on these two crucial fronts.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Inside CENTCOM.......2006-08-21

Simplistic, lacking in real substance and on several occasions purports to speak for all involved. Not a serious reference. The co-writer should be ashamed.

5 out of 5 stars The Military History of 9/11, Afghanistan and Iraq .......2006-01-05

This short, easily readable book concerns itself -as the title aptly implies- only with the view of those running the U.S. Central Command during the USS Cole, 9/11, the War in Afghanistan, and the War in Iraq. If you are looking for more breadth you will be disappointed, but taken for what it is the book is lucid, concise, and always straight to the point.

What is useful about this book is the chance to see how our U.S. commanders responsible for military actions in the Middle East, Horn of Africa, and Central Asia see the world and how they act. They are blunt, dedicated, capable, and surprisingly innovative. Although they may not wrap themselves up in nuances the way many people who are only concerned about intelligence, or diplomacy, or some other single discipline tend to, neither do they take a simplistic view of the world. They maintain the ability to see simple truths in a complex world, and use those truths to guide them in a highly stressful, highly demanding, and highly risky endeavour.

The book chronologically accounts Lt. Gen. De Long's extended three year tenure as deputy commander of CentCom during the most important events in the war on terror. You will see how CentCom concerned itself (and still does) with building and maintaing coalitions that are determined by the mission at hand (not the other way around) and with all the military strategy, planning, intelligence, diplomacy, logistics, and support needed to fight the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. This book is good military history of how we pulled off those operations, what we did right, and what we did wrong. It also shows the transformation our military is going through towards becoming a fully joint force, and the payoffs this is having in the current theaters of operation. It is also encouraging to see that the U.S. military is indeed reacting to the Al-Qaeda threat with innovative new ways of conducting military operations. There are a small handful of historical gems that did not get wide media coverage and can help explain the current military situation to the lay person.

Certainly a book that is worth reading, but limited in scope. You won't find any explanation of the root causes of Al-Qaeda, any real insight or analysis on Al-Qaeda's strategy and tactics, nor any grand strategy for defeating them. You will see how CentCom got things done and why they did it the way they did. The teaser of where Iraq's WMD are fizzles a bit in the actual telling though. They certainly may be in Syria, Lebanon or still hidden, but conventional wisdom seems to have concluded they don't exist and there's not enough evidence presented here to suggest that this is incorrect. There are also several appendices with official documentation regarding the current U.S. defense strategy which are interesting.

4 out of 5 stars A good read, but is detracted by the hubris.......2005-08-18

This book is a quick and interesting read, in which the author points out some interesting facts that might not be apparent to the reader. Unfortunately, the book is a little short, and I couldn't help but feel that the author isn't sharing nearly enough of his experiences at CentCom as he should. On the negative side, there does seem to be a small amount of hubris in the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Inside Story.......2005-02-04

You don't really know what's happening in the world until the books come out. The news suppliers certainly make little or no attempt at going beyond the death of the day.

In this book one of the insiders of the war on terror speaks. General DeLong was in on the conferences, in on the decisions, central in the formation of the Coalition of countries in Afghanistan and Iraq. He is able to separate out the daily flak and put what happened in a perspective that certainly wasn't covered in the sound bytes of the election. This is one central player's view of what really happened in a story that will be analyzed for years just like Pearl Harbour.

In my opinion this is a mandatory book, required reading.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing Account.......2005-01-24

Lt Gen DeLong's account of his time at CENTCOM was not at all the unbiased account he claims to provide. It is, at its root, an effort to convince people (and perhaps himself) that he was a relevant player in the Afghan and Iraq campaigns. I cannot say to what extent GEN Franks and other decision makers relied on DeLong, but after reading several accounts of this period of time, I'd guess DeLong exaggerates his relevance.
This book is also inaccurate. DeLong claims that Afghan Warlord Rashid Dostam freed Kabul from the Taliban. In reality it was Fahim Khan that entered Kabul after the Taliban left the city out of fear of Coalition air power. DeLong also refers to Hamid Karzai, later to become President of Afghanistan, as General Karzai. Karzai never held a military post and was never called "General" by any Afghan natives or non-Afghans familiar with Afghanistan.
If you want to read an unbiased and accurate accord of the Afghan and Iraq Wars, I would suggest waiting 50 years until a real historian turns his/her attention to this time period. In the interim, read Woodward's Bush at War or Plan of Attack. I wouldn't normally support Woodward, but if you must read something now, those are as good as it gets.

                                      Book Description

Post-glacial Vegetation of Canada brings together all the available information about the complex history of vegetational and environmental change in Canada since the last Ice Age. As the lands began to emerge from under the ice, they provided a large, varied setting for the re-establishment of highly diverse plant cover ranging from the modern tropical rain forests to the arctic tundra. Professor Ritchie discusses the roles of climactic change, wildfires, diseases, and biological factors in controlling the emerging patterns of new plant growth. The initial chapters present a balanced review of the modern bioclimates and vegetation of Canada as an introduction to the historical record. A review of the present pollen registration and the autecology of the important plant taxa is provided by examining the fossil record, derived primarily from pollen evidence. Students and researchers in the natural history of Canada and the Northern regions will find Post-glacial Vegetation of Canada a source of much information. It will also appeal to those with interests in botany, geography, geology, archaeology, and paleoecology.
