An informative 'myth-buster'.......2000-07-12
This book pushes the field of Ecology to a new level. Whilst the concepts of Traditional Ecological Knowledge are not new (in fact they are ancient), the range and maturity of the discussion makes it very accessible to the average reader. Berkes ranges widely with his examples and clearly the book involved significant internationl networking (Yes, there were even examples from my home of New Zealand!). Some fascinating myths that are exploded include the Chief Seattle Speech and the Eskimo snow hoax. I recommend it to every ecologist as a way to bring the sacred into science.

A Wonderful Travel Companion.......2005-02-14
We used this book on a family trip to northern Italy. It's photos, maps, write-ups and ratings were very useful in helping us get our bearings. There are tips for travellers with kids and goes in-depth when discussing different religious sites (of interest to both the Christian & Jewish faiths). Broken up into various city-regions, this touring guide is a great travel companion.

Book Description
Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872—1906) overcame racism and poverty to become one of the best-known authors in America, and the first African American to earn a living from his poetry, fiction, drama, journalism, and lectures. This original collection includes the short novel The Sport of the Gods, Dunbar’s essential essays and short stories, and his finest poems, such as “Sympathy,” all which explore crucial social, political, and humanistic issues at the dawn of the twentieth century.
Book Description
Wrapped In Blue is Donna Rose's deeply personal memoir of self-discovery. The emotional story of her courageous and difficult journey across the gender line challenges the reader to consider life, love and gender in a new and insightful way. In the process, it provides a unique, intriguing, and sometimes humorous perspective on the differences between men and women.

A Hearts Desire Fulfilled.......2007-10-14
I learned a very great deal from the book, by Donna Rose, titled "Wrapped In Blue." Being as I am TG myself I realized that there are others who suffer this same affliction besides myself. But most of all, the most important lessen of all that I learned from Donna Rose's book was that I could stop my self hatred, (to a very large degree), and finally understand that this is the way that I was. I no longer feel like a deviate sex pervert, or possessed by the devil, and I no longer feel genetically defective. Donna Rose's book gave to me a kind of healing and I finally feel okay with my self. This book had a big and beneficial effect on my life. I highly recommend this book for reading by anyone who wants to increase their understanding of the TG condition, whether they are TG themselves or not. Yours sincerely, Scot Crawford, (Beeble-bee).
A Moving and Honest Story.......2007-01-02
For any persons who have wondered about making the journey from manhood to womanhood, this is a "must" read. It is also a most scary and tension-filled adventure as we follow Dave from his life as a world class athlete, a husband and father and a successful professional into being Donna, a most attractive and lovely professional woman.
I found myself engrossed in this book from the first chapter, and read its 361 pages in two sittings. This is a story of her early life of deception trying to hide at first her crossdressing and later her desires to become female from parents, brothers and sisters, friends and later wives and children.
Dave/Donna is an intelligent, caring, loving father who juggles natural feelings of femininity and the needs to live as a woman. She learns with disastrous results that whether she is "up front" and honest about her situation or is "found out" that she chances the loss of everything she had gained in the first 40 years of life: family, job and many friends.
She tries strategies to do everything "right" at the workplace as she takes the steps to womanhood; yet, each step is filled with fears and tensions as she becomes an object of co-worker gawking and corporate coldness to her situation. Her relationship with her wife of 16 years (a woman she loved unconditionally) is particularly heart-rending.
Once Donna has come out to her family, friends and employer, much of the tension of the book is lessened. She fully describes the difficult and painful surgeries involving facial reconstruction, breast enhancement and sexual reassignment, and these have their own tensions, but nothing like the fears and terrors she felt in dealing with the social aspect of transitioning.
Let's commend Ms. Rose for honestly and openly telling of her struggles and triumphs in transitioning. Not many persons could have been as brave and persistent as she was in discovering her true self.
The book also is a step-by-step summary of the transition process. Those interested in transitioning will learn just exactly all of the tremendous challenges they would face in deciding whether it's worth it.
A very honest and courageous portrayal.......2006-07-18
Donna Rose is a very attractive, feminine woman. I highly recommend "Wrapped in Blue: A Journal of Discovery," as Donna gradually becomes aware that although apparently born as a boy, there was a strong feminine side to his personality, which did not completely go away even during years as a successful athlete, an intially happy marriage and the birth of a son.
There is no such thing as a typical transsexual and Donna's life probably is different in certain ways from the experiences of many transsexuals. One feels the psychological pain Donna experiences as Elizabeth, spouse, discovers Donna is taking female hormones and the couple's previous happy marriage comes to an end, as well as the pain Donna feels while losing contact with her son for many months.
Donna reveals the process commonly taken by many transsexuals, the hormone treatments, electrolysis, transition issues at work, breast augmentation surgery, sex reassignment surgery, etc. I recommend this book not just for persons who think or know they are transsexuals, their families, friends and co-workers. I also recommend "Wrapped in Blue: A Journal of Discovery" to all persons as a book having universal themes about honesty, courage, being true to one's self and pursuing one's life dreams.
great book - lots to think about.......2005-09-06
This isn't written nearly as well as "She's not there" however it is a very telling story. A very "normal" story of a trasformation. The focus on how relationships were altered forever is a sobering reality and a pretty realistic picture I would expect. I enjoyed this book very much.
Following in you Footsteps.......2005-01-31
I am Transgendered and in transition. I found the book to be a valuable educational tool for me. But beyond that it is a story of courage beyond all reason. I cried when she cried and I was lonely when she was lonely. It is a riveting yet compassionate story of 4 years of David/Donna's life in which a frustrated male tosses all odds to the wind and despite intiial misgivings transforms into a beautiful woman. Her explicit details of her day to day transition is must reading for anyone contemplating a gender change. I applaude her for her honesty and integrity. Bravo. Donna

Definitive, but flawed.......2001-08-30
A welcome volume on an important, yet unsung, aircraft. Excellent detail on a wide variety of variants. Unfortunately, the book could have benefited from another proofreading for spelling and style. The author should learn the distinction between the Greek "Alpha" and the NATO phonetic "ALFA."
Finally - a comprehensive P-3 book!.......2001-07-05
In his 223 page work, David Reade has attempted to cover every P-3 variant, including some (very) little-known ones. The result is a marvellous reference work which I give 4 stars only due to its lack of an index and a small number of captioning, typographic, and minor factual errors, which somewhat detract from its utility. I'm looking forward to a 2nd edition, but wouldn't wait for one.
4000+ hr P-3B TACCO/Mission Commander
The only resource of its kind in the world!.......1998-09-13
Aviation enthusiasts have been waiting for many years for somebody to do a comprehensive illustrated book on the Lockheed P3 Orion. Thanks to prolific military book publisher Schiffer, this has finally been done. David Reade's 223 page hardcover does an excellent job of telling the story of the Lockheed P3 Orion from its late 50s origins as a modified Electra passenger airliner to the present day P3C. All major modifications of the Orion and all the countries that fly them are covered, and perhaps this is the only true weakness of the book. It's such a huge story that giving detailed comprehensive coverage to 'rare' variants and foreign operators of relatively few aircraft takes valuable page space away from the standard USN antisubmarine patrol aircraft that this writer knows and loves (I'm a P3 EWO in the US Navy Reserve). I'd have liked to have seen more photos showing standard US Navy VP squadron aircraft with their unique and colorful tail emblems (Ideally a photo of an aircraft from every VP squadron in the US Navy showing all the different tail markings used over the past 35 years or so) and less coverage of the EP3s and 'Domes' and other things but that's just me. Even so, there is no other book on the market like it and if you are interested in the Lockheed P3 Orion you really need to add this book to your library. Now, who's going to do a comprehensive illustrated book on the subject of US Naval Reserve aviation????

Very good introduction.......2005-05-28
Bytwerk has written a very accessible book about the use of propaganda by the two twentieth century dictatorships in Germany - the nazis and the communists. It's well-organized with excellent endnotes and a lengthy bibliography. While I think the subject deserves two in-depth booklength studies on each individual era instead of this comparative approach, "Bending Spines" is a good introduction. At times however, the comparative structure simply breaks down, for example in the chapter comparing the role of satire journals under Hitler and in the GDR. Bytwerk's hunt for anti-semitic "humor" in East German sources to compare to the Nazi's overwhelming hatred made me cringe. Bytwerk provides a wonderful website as a supplement to this book. It is an archive of translations of both Nazi and communist propaganda and is superb.
A sober, meticulous dissection of the lessons of history.......2004-12-12
Award-winning author an Professor of Communication Randall Bytwerk presents Bending Spines: The Propagandas Of Nazi Germany And The German Democratic Republic, a scholarly close study that strives to answer a larger question: why do totalitarian propagandas such as those created in Nazi Germany and the former German Democratic Republic succeed so well in the short term, yet fail in the long term? Examining in-depth the litany of persuasive techniques used by the regimes, and ultimately concluding that the government expected more of propaganda than it was able to deliver, Bending Spines leaves no word unturned in its search to comprehend what truth moves and manipulates human hearts and minds. A sober, meticulous dissection of the lessons of history.
Book Description
Kenny Salwey is a modern-day American hermit who has lived most of his life in the Mississippi river bottoms, coming to know the river ecosystem with an intimacy unavailable to most. Now, Kenny shares his love of, and knowledge about, the mighty river. "The Last River Rat" is a seasonal look at Kenny’s unique life. Each chapter covers a month of Kenny’s year and starts by detailing his activities--such as deer hunting, ginseng digging, or mushroom picking--and closes with one of Kenny’s own "Rat Tales": his personal thoughts on various aspects of his way of life, such as the importance of dogs or memories of other river rats with whom he has crossed paths. Through Kenny--a true naturalist who provides sage advice about living off the land and protecting the river’s ecology--and "The Last River Rat", you’ll gain a greater appreciation for the natural world.

The Last River Rat .......2006-03-27
I have never met Kenny, but after reading this book, it seems as though I have known him most of my life. I grew up on a farm in Winona County in the 50's and 60's hunting and fishing every chance I had. Reading chapter after chapter, from my experiences which are a bit different, but similar, than Kenny's, I relived part of my life again and many of the phrases found in the book jogged my memory nicely. I spent four years at Winona State and did my share of fishing below the dam and wandering around some of the backwaters on the Wisconsin side of the river amid much of the wildlife Kenny encountered. Each almanac chapter, as well as the Rat Tales, are filled with information and feelings that only a true naturalist could convey. This book is a facinating account of a river rat's calendar year and all the beauty and excitement in and around the Mississippi River from one month to the next. A must read for anyone who lives in this area or wishes they did.
Most Honest Accounting of "A River Rat".......2002-06-15
I have known Kenny since 1980, although I've only started reading this story I am extremely comfortable with the pace and grace Mr. Bestul uses. Kenny is everything the book says he is a very hard working, deliberate, honest, kind and caring person, without a mean bone in him. I've shared stories and bread with Kenny, and he really is the type of person you would like to know personally. Mary Kay's illustrations are graceful and a pleasure to view alongside this wonderful story.
In my opinion this book is a must for any outdoorsman, or for a quiet read next to a fire. I sincerely hope you enjoy Kenny's story as much as I am.
