Inspiring and enlightening. A good read........1997-12-02

This book reflects and mirrors our own inner state. I enjoyed reading about Mr. Altschuler's presence of mind and approach to life. I visited New England in the fall and I kept thinking about what it would be like to live in a small cabin and experience the quiet and my own mindstate under such conditions.

Two Weeks with Touring in Wine Country Provence in my Pocket.......2001-12-26

We used this handy guide for two weeks as we toured Provence, tasting our way through 20+ wineries from Les Baux to Cotes du Luberon. This book provided a terrific education on the wines of the area, some great restraunt tips and most importantly ...how to find the vineyards! We used the companion Touring Rhone Wine Country as well. This is a well written and visually appealing book....certainly makes you want to stop at every opportunity. We found that we agreed with the writers recommendations almost without exception. The only area of needed improvement is in the directions to the vineyards and the detail of the maps. We sometimes had difficulty finding the recommended wineries. If one speaks French, the given addresses might be enough....but for those of us who don't...more detailed directions please. Also add winery websites...they are becoming more common.

I am still being benefited a lot from this book........2007-06-06

As a fun of meshless methods, I studied in quite detail if the book during my research work. The book has a big volume, it is plainly written in a very clear way, carefully organized and hence is very easy to follow and understand. The author should be credit for this remarkable job. In my opinion, this book stands out in the following aspects compared with other publications. 1) it has a comprehensive coverage on almost all major meshless methods including, EFG, MLPF, BNM, as well as the coupled methods. In addition, many of these methods have been compared with each other via numerical examples with detailed discussions and remarks, which helped me a lot to understand the difference of these techniques. 2) A wide range of applications have been provided in this book, including beams, solids, shell, fluids, etc. 3) Many well developed numerical implementation techniques are also provided with detailed examination on the their properties.

In my view, this book is a single volume that covers major necessary materials related to meshless methods and techniques for readers to begin with. It provides a good starting platform for readers to develop their own meshless techniques and apply meshless methods to their own research areas. For beginners especially students, you can find almost all the relevant materials required for the research of meshless methods. I am still being benefited a lot from this book. It is, in fact, one of the very few books always standing on my desk.

Some meshless techniques like the enrichment techniques are not included in detail in the book. Hope these techniques can be included in the next edition. In addition, the new developments in the meshless techniques should be added.

A quite good book .......2007-06-04

It is a quite good book for a beginner like me. I knew little about meshfree methods, and started to learn about them two years ago. I was lucky that I found this book. It really helped me a lot in the process of learning these new (to me) methods. My English is poor but I found this book is very easy to read: much easier than other English books that I read before. It is very well organized with details on theories, fundamentals and applications. Also, this book describes many meshfree methods and techniques, not just the ones developed by the author. It covers also many problems (solids, beams, plates, shells, and fluids). This helped me in understanding many papers in there areas. I found also that the large numbers of example problems, figures, tables were extremely useful in working out my own codes and problems. I have to say thanks to the author on all these carefully prepared examples. As my background is basically engineering, and I found the mathematical descriptions are easy to follow, which helps me also in working out my own codes. I truly appreciate very much for the author's valuable efforts in writing this book. Without it, I would have to spend a lot more time in figuring out all the methods, techniques, procedures and even terminologies. My sincere thanks again to the author. The author did a very good job in helping out a beginner like me. I appreciate it. It would be however even better, if the source codes (Fortran or C++) were provided. This is the only one suggestion that I have for the author.

Absolutely catastrophic.......2006-06-19

This book is a single giant catastrophe.
The authors are in a terrible command of English. Virtually on every page there are at least several typing errors and formulations that strike you as being copied from a beginners' learning book of the English language which makes reading this book a torture. Scientifically, the authors have mainly collected material from several sources and jotted it down from cover to cover. There are many repetitions and identical phrases throughout the book that strike you as if different parts of the manuscript ware copy-pasted together and then mixed up a bit. The authors have definitely no good training in Mathematics. The delta function is displayed incorrecly in the derivation of the shape functions in chapter 3 and there are so many formal and mathematical inaccuracies in the book that it really starts to bother. Even worse, the authors have the strong tendency to virtually only cite themselves. When looking at the references mentioned in the text, they almost always read "Liu and Liu", "Liu and Liu". You get the impression that the authors have developed if not all then most of the whole field of SPH themselves alone. This constant self-citing is kept throughout the whole book and is very annoying. In addition, the coding examples at the end of the book are written in Fortran. Now, from a state-of-the art book on SPH I would have expected more sophisticated coding (C, C++, JAVA, other object oriented languages) than Fortran. Nowadays, probably nobody who is properly professionally trained in computer science would start writing scientific code in Fortran.
This book strikes me as an example of a book that was very sloppily written in extremely bad English just for the authors to be able to claim to have been the first ones who wrote a book on the SPH method. I do not reccomend it at all.

Not TOO hot to handle.......2007-05-17

If you've ever done any public speaking, you know that some of the best advice you can get is to open with a joke. You put both the audience and yourself at ease before diving into the weightier points.

Editor Mitzi Szereto seems to have followed that advice in compiling The World's Best Sex Writing 2005. This non-fiction anthology opens with a humorous article. "The Big Ooooooohh!"--if I have to tell you what it's about, you really need to read it--had me laughing hard enough to warrant a dirty look from the cat whose midnight bath I'd so rudely disrupted.

But then the content turns serious as we delve into "Andrea Dworkin, 1946-2005" and "The Sex Files." Antipornography feminism and the lingering legal ramifications of homosexuality represent a major point shift away from the opening article. Then we move on to political interference in scientific research on sexuality and the advent of female genital "plastic surgery." Weightier points indeed!

Like Szereto's previous editorial offering, Wicked: Sexy Tales of Legendary Lovers (see my review in issue 3.11), this collection has something to suit every taste and runs the gamut from humorous to horrifying.

Other reviewers have--and probably will--include the following proviso, but it bears repeating nonetheless. The World's Best Sex Writing 2005 is not pornography. It's not even erotica, although some of the memoirs test that theory. It is, however, a frank and sometime profane discussion of human sexuality.

Will you be offended at least once by the time you're done reading? No doubt. (I know I had to grit my teeth through some of the articles.) Sex is, after all, a delicate subject with countless variations of perception. What I find amusing, you might find obscene, and vice versa.

However, if you stick it out (so to speak) and read every article, you stand a far better chance of being educated, enlightened, and entertained.

Just don't expect to be coddled. The language used is often graphic. Little is left to the imagination. If you're offended by such things, don't read the book.

In fact, you probably shouldn't be reading this review. Now that I've brought the book to your attention, you might feel compelled to read it, if only for curiosity's sake.

Intriguing commentaries that shed light on our society's sexual hangups.......2005-12-25

Sorry to disappoint many of you, The World's Best Sex Writing 2005, edited by Mitzi Szereto, is not a compilation of an exposé of steamy sex stories. However, the twenty-five contributions that have been gleaned from such well-known publications and Internet sites as the New York magazine, Newsweek.com, Salon.com, The Sunday Telegraph (London), The Miami Herald, are rather a collection of thought provoking essays, memoirs, and opinions from a wide spectrum of writers and journalists, all pertaining to different aspects of the sexual culture of our times.

Freelance journalist Barry Yeoman relates how one research scientist's study of pornography, prostitutes, and seedy truck stops questioned the integrity and usefulness of the study and why the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development were funding the research.

Initially, the NIH were delighted when the grant proposal arrived in 2002. Apparently, there were very few studies pertaining to long-haul truckers and sexual health. It was pointed out that in the USA there was evidence of an outbreak of HIV among truckers. Furthermore, truckers can affect other groups, once they arrive home. It all blew up when a journalist questioned why the NIH was funding research pertaining to porn and before you knew it congress stuck their noses into the fray, such as Representative John Doolittle, a California Republican, who stated, "this flagrant frittering away of federal funds is borderline criminal." As the Yeoman asserts, "the incivility of the NIH debate has promoted neither good dialogue nor good science."

Sherry F. Colb, a professor at Rutgers Law School, fills us in on the details of a most unusual law suit wherein the plaintiff sued his ex-girlfriend whom he had engaged in oral sex. Apparently, unbeknownst to him, his girlfriend allegedly saved the resulting semen and used it to inseminate herself. The defendant subsequently gave birth and the DNA tests proved to be that of the plaintiff. Interesting enough, the plaintiff only learned about the pregnancy and the birth when he was ordered by the court to pay approximately eight hundred dollars a month in child support.

There is a an OB/GYN who recently founded the Laser Vaginal Institute of Michigan. This enterprising doctor offers his patients several elective female genital surgeries-the primary objective being to enhance sexual gratification for women.
In Alabama, there is a sex-toy ban that was passed by their legislature in 1998 that makes it unlawful to distribute "any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." As a result of this law, Sherri Williams, owner of a chain of adult stores has spent the past six years suing the state of Alabama to overturn the law.

These are just some of the intriguing commentaries that shed light on our society's sexual hangups, some of which are quite hilarious and at times hypocritical. The World's Best Sex Writing 2005 is a joy to read; hopefully the right open minded readers will discover it.

Where Are You Kris?.......2006-07-13

I still take this book out from our huge home library -- sorry, we have a lot of books -- to look at Kris'paintings and the subtle words that tell about her life.

Ricky was my first love. I was seven years old when I first heard him sing "Travellin' Man" and the family meant so much to me as a child. I know they weren't real now, and Rick and Kris' children are all grown and Ozzie and Harriet are long gone. But... Is Kris still painting? Where are you, Kris? Remember Saint Martin of Tours in Brentwood?

Really a Masterpiece.......2006-02-14

I always loved The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriet, especially when Kristin joined the cast in later years. This book is Kris's autobiography, a personal glimpse into her life and soul, and an in-depth look at the woman behind the actress on TV. A very gifted artist, Kris expresses herself through her paintings. I marveled at the detail in each work of art, examining each one and identifying the people and elements within. Also present are excerpts from her personal journal and poetry, many filled with sadness and poignancy reflecting Kris's struggles throughout her life. This book is largely a celebration, however, of the life of a very gifted artist. I hope Kris writes another book one day.

She has elevated her personal story to a universal level.......2005-04-18

There was a time when all of us and our mothers too were in love with Rick Nelson. But the one most in love with him was Kris Harmon, who became his wife in April 1963. She wrote a book about this life, and it is a book from which everyone can learn -- from her example, her words, and her artwork.

Rick Nelson brought rock music into the living rooms of America and made it acceptable. He was the teen idol of a generation - the Prince of Rock and Roll in the days when Elvis was the King. I am appalled that the kid at Starbuck's doesn't know who Rick Nelson is today.

Rick's fans have always criticized Kris for reasons I only partially understand. (Remember, they weren't wild about Yoko either.) For instance, Kris had a temper; Rick did not. His fans criticized her when she was with him on the road and when she was not. Kris and the kids always had to compete with the fans and his band for his attention. Rick liked being a father, but he was not home very often.

In 1981, she left the marriage and Rick reluctantly. Rick's sudden death in an airplane crash in December 1985 shocked the nation and left many people in addition to his family bereft for a long time. I attended a Tribute to him in 1993 in L.A. and was surprised at the number of people from all over the world who grieved his death as a personal loss.

In 1987, Kris was accused by her family of being an unfit mother at the time she sought treatment for pill and alcohol addiction. This is, unfortunately, a reason that keeps many women from seeking treatment when they need it. Asking for help takes courage; getting help means one will be a better mother. To be punished for it enrages me still. She discusses this time in her life without sparing the hurt.

The book has over 100 of her paintings in it and many poems. Some reviewers have called it a daybook, or journal, not a traditional autobiography. It is a memoir in the true meaning of the word -she has elevated her personal story to a more universal level.

When asked in an interview once how she feels about Rick now, she said something like, "I miss him. He was funny. We were friends and had fun. And I still miss him." After all those years of fights in court, the truth emerges.

Kris is building an extraordinary legacy. It is clear that she finds solace and salvation in her artwork and in New Mexico. She is, for the first time, being recognized as herself, not the daughter of someone famous, or the wife of someone famous, or the mother of someone famous - but for herself. And it is clear that she has learned that death ends a life, but not a relationship.

This book was received as a gift, after reading it I just could not put it down. It's true interest from start to finish, Kris did a great job with this book with alot of talent and love!

I recommend any Rick Nelson fan, get a copy and enjoy!!

A Great Read.......2002-04-02

After watching a presentation about Rick Nelson's career on VH1, I was uncomfortable with the portrayal of Kristin Nelson. Curious about her, I purchased a copy of, "Our Of My Mind." What an interesting book! Through the use of her paintings, poems, photographs, and diary entries, she recalls her life.
A victor over her personal struggles, a successful single mother, and a talented artist, one can only admire her.

A must read for any teenager.......2003-04-14

In Montel William's book, he brings much light onto the never-ending battle people have with frustration and "hard times." I was given this book as a gift from my mom. She said she heard from people at work that it was very eye-opening and motivational. I would be lying if I said I didn't agree. From the opening chapter, until the very end, you'll get a feeling of warmth and bursts of motivation as you read about the trials and tribulations of Montel as you begin to relate to your own life experiences. His recollection of a motivational lecture at a high school where he calls on a young boy to discuss issues of morals (chapter 2?) will put an ear-to-ear smile on your face. While this book is not a "billion-dollar" winner, it sure is worth a read. I find myself thinking about this book in particular when I come across situations in my life that require personal integrity and determination. I am now 18 and I still think about the words and wisdom that Montel had to offer. Do yourself a favor and give it a chance, it might be as influential on you as it was me.

When I first saw this book it was on the bargain/clearance rack at the local bookstore. Having seen Montel's wonderful TV show, I decided that I'd buy the book and take it home for immediate reading. I made a big mistake. Instead of finding glimmering little gems of wisdom and insight throughout the pages of the book, I found nothing but a lot of self-congratulatory references to Montel's supposed superior public speaking abilities and his assumptions that he has all of the answers for society's various ills. When I was through reading this book I experienced a feeling that I have never had before -- I wanted to slowly roast his book in my barbecue grill! No other author has ever managed to raise such a truly unpleasant feeling inside of me like this guy has. Before I read the book, I respected and even admired Montel, but after I read it I began to dislike him immensely. Maybe this would have been a better book if Montel had the common courtesy to check his ego at the door and focused on something other than how great he thinks that he is.

Mountian Get out of my way life lessons and learned truths.......2000-09-30

I purchased this book several years ago and found it to be very down to earth. I appreciate the fact that while Montel shared his not always so bright life with the public he was able to share lessons learned that could bless someone else who may have been going down the same path. I commend him as a man to be able to receive correction but to also admit fault and openly correct his behavior to make his future better. I also enjoyed the example of him standing up for his show and doing what he thought was a proper format not matter what the cost or what the network execs thought. Being an example for our youth is important and Montel showed that he could influence our children on their level and not preach at them. This book gives us all a reality check in things we can do to improve ourselves, our relationships, our children and our society. Continued success!

I loved this book. Montel puts alot of love in everything he does. Not only in the show but in his book as well. He really cares about his viewers and guests. I love his show and I think he is a gift from God for many.

"Fanatic," "dogmatic," "fundamentalist"--these are the words most often used in the West to describe the Ayatollah Khomeini. The essays in this book challenge that view, arguing that Khomeini and his Islamic movement should be seen as a form of Third World political populism--a radical but pragmatic middle-class movement that strives to enter, rather than reject, the modern age.
Ervand Abrahamian, while critical of Khomeini, asks us to look directly at the Ayatollah's own works and to understand what they meant to his principal audience--his followers in Iran. Abrahamian analyzes political tracts dating back to 1943, along with Khomeini's theological writings and his many public statements in the form of speeches, interviews, proclamations and fatwas (judicial decrees). What emerges, according to Abrahamian, is a militant, sometimes contradictory, political ideology that focuses not on issues of scripture and theology but on the immediate political, social, and economic grievances of workers and the middle class.
These essays reveal how the Islamic Republic has systematically manipulated history through televised "recantations," newspapers, school textbooks, and even postage stamps. All are designed to bolster the clergy's reputation as champions of the downtrodden and as defenders against foreign powers. Abrahamian also discusses the paranoia that permeates the political spectrum in Iran, contending that such deep distrust is symptomatic of populist regimes everywhere.

those of us in the west would like to think that what the media says about iran is true. i am sorry to say thats not the case, the book gives us a far better idea of what actually went on in iran. We get to see what kind of a person Khomeini really was a vicious, shrewd, angry old man.

Abrahamian's essays from 1993 argue that Khomeini was an astute religious Populist who did not micro manage the revolution but helped motivate, encourage, and lead a revolt that was against irreligious Royalty, foreign interests, cultural debasement of Islamic Iran and provided authenticity for Iranians.

The "Paranoid Style" in Iranian politics played a significant role in the revolution and also in the difficulty of interpretation since. Another chapter traces May Day celebrations (and what reminds one of "socialistic realist" art posters and stamps) to show evolution from elements of a worker's revolution to a nationalist bourgeois realism. The evolving perceptions of property and state (another essay) puts perspective on rhetoric of people's rights that never threatened private property but came to more strongly support a national economy so long as Iranian culture and religion were secure and foreign interests well controlled - pragmatism did not replace principle.

The most important essay argues convincingly that the "Fundamentalist" label explains little about the character or the success of the revolution. (This should be a strong reminder to the labelers of our own time who feel they explain and understand by name calling.)

Essays, perhaps necessarily, sometimes overlap and are uneven. At times they could have been briefer and tighter. A reader would do well to have some basic picture of Iranian history at least back into the 19th century. Yet the book has considerable value and the first and last essays on the "Populism" of the revolution and the "Paranoid Style" of Iranian politics are of special value.

Like most students of Iran, Abrahamian brings the academic's bias against religion having much importance. He prefers to see Khomeini's ideas "as a flexible political movement." But discount this bias and you'll find Abrahamian makes a strong and original case that "the behavior of Khomeini and the Islamic Republic has been determined less by scriptural principles than by immediate political, social, and economic needs." He makes this case the old-fashioned way, through a close reading of texts and study of events. Abrahamian's intimate knowledge of Iran imbues his short study with the sort of insight all too rare in the study of Iran; and it's certainly one of the most important books on Iran to appear in English in some years. The author catalogues the profound changes in Khomeini's thinking that took place in the era 1965-70, when he replaced many of his traditional Shi'ite beliefs with the trendy notions of European Marxism (as mediated by Leftist Iranian intellectuals). Abrahamian demonstrates the evolution of the mullahs' relations with the Left through a close analysis of May Day celebrations. Over and over again, he shows how Khomeini changed his views to fit current needs, contradicting not only himself but some of Islam's most basic tenets (such as the priority of Sacred Law over raison d'état). Indeed, the sainted ayatollah apparently stuck with just one tenet through his entire career: the inviolability of private property.

Excellent Account of Science in Action.......2007-03-05

This was probably the first piece of scientific "field-study" literature I've ever read, and i would consider it a must-read for anyone in the biological or environmental fields. Carr does an excellent job of portraying a contrast in cultures and simultaneously gives the reader an incredible understanding of the natural climate of the regions he visits as well. His writing style and content both keep the reader engaged, and years after my first read of it, I find myself coming back to the work to read through various sections from time to time. As a young conservation ecologist, this, along with Aldo Leopold's Sand County Almanac, constitutes my professional bible.

Naturalist's Humor and Wry Observations Save Story.......2004-02-17

I found the Windward Road a rather dull account of the author's search for the green turtle. While I appreciated his folksy humor and wry observations, the book failed to be an absorbing adventure. The turtle he is after doesn't turn up until the last two chapters of the book. In fact, the last two chapters were the most interesting for me. I did enjoy Mr. Carr's interactions with the local natives in his wanderings. They carried the knowledge of where to find turtles in their community. Overall I tired of reading about Carr watching native people dig up turtle eggs from their clutch, Carr witnessing the bludgeoning of captured turtles, going on hunts to harpoon turtles and Carr being served up various turtle delicacies. I realize the book was written 50 years ago and sentiments about animals were very different. To that point, it is probably important to read something like this to understand some early turtle nesting areas and how the turtle sustained a native people.

A delightful book by a wonderful naturalist.......2002-01-05

Archie Carr was the Godfather of modern sea-turtle biology and an outspoken advocate of turtle conservation who did more than anyone else to bring our attention to these creatures. The Windward Road is a masterpiece of Natural History writing, capturing a magical moment in time as Carr delves into the secret lives of the great green turtles and takes us with him on journeys to Caribbean islands as yet largely unspoiled by the wave of development that was to come. Anyone interested in conservation biology or with a love of a good yarn should get hold of this book, sink back and hear the trade winds blow -and then get out of your chair & do something to carry on the struggle that Carr waged for so long to preserve turtles and their habitats. This is a book that you will come back to repeatedly & pass on to friends and students with enthusiasm.
