        Book Description

An expert on winter now turns his talents to autumn, a season of beauty and change. Author of the award-winning Life in the Cold, Peter J. Marchand examines the natural and biological phenomena of fall. With Marchand as your guide, fall becomes much more than trees turning, killing frosts, birds migrating, and invigorating crisp weather. Dig under the fallen leaves and heavy mists with him to discover a vibrant world. Readers learn the whys and wherefores of these events, but much much more, as Marchand answers questions most non-specialists have about how and why such changes and adaptations occur.

Though autumn may appear to be primarily a transitional season, he shows how many remarkable and essential natural processes happen routinely only during this period. He describes such topics as timekeeping in plants and animals, food hoarding, seed dispersal, and animal mating behavior among the large mammals of the North. The book is organized by theme rather than by species, so that similar adaptation mechanisms of different species can be compared and contrasted.

Marchand has a demonstrated skill in making scientific facts easily understood, while also conveying the beauty and wonder of what he describes. Also an accomplished photographer, his many beautiful full-page photographs show unusual aspects of the season.

        5 out of 5 stars He's done it again.......2000-11-03

Peter Marchand's "Autumn," an accessible account of the biology of fall, describes the many changes that define my favorite time of year.

As in "Life in the Cold," Marchand does his best to describe sometimes complex processes in plain language, and for the most part he succeeds. His depictions of leaf senescence, cold adaptation, and migrations are excellent. I especially appreciate the literary contributions (from Thoreau and others), which help balance the generally technical presentation.

For most of us, autumn is a time of contrasts, with brilliant colors fading to winter's gloom. So Marchand's decision to use black-and-white photographs, intended to help us "see beyond the sometimes distracting color of the season," is a bit puzzling. His photographs are beautiful, but I can't help but wonder how they would have looked in color. Apparently black-and-white is distracting!

Minor quibbles aside, Peter Marchand has once again proven that he has a gift for helping us see the obvious and understand the unseen. I can't wait for "Spring!"

                          Book Description

Cliffs are present in virtually every country on earth. The lack of scientific interest in cliffs to date is in striking contrast to the commonness of cliffs around the world and to the attraction cliffs have had for humans throughout history. Cliffs provide a unique habitat, rarely investigated from an ecological viewpoint. This book aims to destroy the impression of cliffs as geological structures devoid of life, by reviewing information about the geology, geomorphology, microclimate, flora, and fauna of both sea and inland cliffs. For the first time, evidence is presented to suggest that cliffs worldwide may represent an invaluable type of ecosystem, consisting of some of the least disturbed habitats on earth and contributing more to the biodiversity of a region than their surface coverage would indicate.

I'm a freshman in high-school and am very interested in Classical literature and history. This book is wonderful. It gives you a flavor for some of the greatest Roman authors, and also gives you a feel for the time they were written. The introduction is wonderfully written, and his insight on the Roman culture is really quite interesting. I wish Davenport had done more books, one on Greek literature would have been spectacular, but to my knowladge there are no more. :( I highly recomend this book for a young person interested in Roman authors. He'll take you from early Roman comedy through the Republic, the Golden and Silver Ages, to the bitter end of the Empire.

The colored photos are in the back of the book, where the same photos in black and white are sprinkled throughout the text making it a bit aggreviating to go back and forth throughout the book. Otherwise, I think it is a great summary of the information needed for wound care.

3 out of 5 stars Unsatisfying lack of detail.......2007-03-19

Some readers will appreciate this concise work about Mobile, Alabama in the Civil War. Others will be disappointed by Art Bergeron's overview style text. If you are the sort of reader that delved deeply into detailed works like Wise's "Gate of Hell, Campaign for Charleston Harbor 1863," Brennan's "Secessionville: Assault on Charleston", Fonvielle's "The Wilmington Campaign", or Dufour's or Hearn's books about New Orleans then you will find "Confederate Mobile" decidedly light. (Fortunately, there is another volume available by Jack Friend that covers the decisive naval action at Mobile in depth.)

"Confederate Mobile" is written largely in a campaign summary format. The writing appears mostly objective with only a slight Southern political bias, and the bibliography indicates deep research; but the book fails to deliver the fruits of the research in a complete or entertaining manner. It does not drill down deeply enough into each subject to give the reader mastery of the topic. Too often the author leaves the rest of the story frustratingly untold, even in the notes.

Maps, tables, and orders of battle are mostly absent. The asterisk is that the Official Records maps are reproduced, but in a reduced grayscale format that blurs text illegibly and clips sections. Some detailed maps of the fortifications are a necessity in this type of work. In this case, even those with the O.R. Atlas will find the material somewhat lacking for Mobile's forts. Other secondary works will be needed to fill in the missing pieces of the puzzle.

The coverage of the Battle of Mobile Bay and subsequent surrenders of each of the forts defending the passes is presented in a scant 14 pages. This is a pity as there are many interesting stories to pursue in this action. There is no list of ships with specifications, gun emplacements, orders of battle, or author's maps.

The blockade running chapter generated only 11 pages. It contained a few insights, but in several ways Wise' book about blockade running covers this in more detail, including tabular lists of vessels arriving and departing from Mobile.

This isn't a bad book, but it isn't very compelling either, so I can't recommend it. Its stinginess with details and maps mean that it does not succeed as a detailed reference.

5 out of 5 stars Another outstanding book.......2000-02-03

This is third book of Dr. Bergeron's I added to my large collection of Civil War books. A must have for any serious scholar and the most comprehensive book I've seen on the subject of Mobile during the WBTS. Very fine research job! Bravo.

Taller in length than the Washington Monument, wider at its center than a three-lane highway, the 18,750-ton Trident nuclear submarine is the most complex war machine the United States Navy has ever produced: a $1.8 billion marvel crammed with more modern military technology than any other vessel in the world. Deep beneath the ocean it can sail for months, undetectable to enemies.

Now for the first time, veteran Time magazine correspondent Douglas C. Waller -- granted more access to one of these awesome submarines than any journalist before -- penetrates the silent, secret world of nuclear subs, taking you on a tension-packed, three-month patrol under the Atlantic Ocean inside the U.S.S. Nebraska, fondly nicknamed Big Red. In chilling detail, witnessed through the eyes of the men on board and told in their own words, Big Red reveals the top-secret procedures for starting World War III, including secret codes, elaborate fail-safe mechanisms, and highly classified battle tactics for nuclear combat. It's a ride you'll never forget.

                                                                      Customer Reviews:

I don't know about you, but I've never been on a nuclear submarine, and have no idea how they work. This book reads like a Rolling Stone-style investigative article, minus the hip counterculture references, in that it focuses on the people and machines working together for a task. It does its best to push that task to the background and portray instead for us the life which wraps around that unspoken task, and how the psychologies of these individuals were able to adapt. It gets a bit fat in the second half (like most of our lives, I suppose) and is never a dramatic or flashy read, but if you wouldn't mind reading a 250 page Newsweek article on submariners, this book is a fertile ground for the imagination.

4 out of 5 stars Sail Quietly and Carry a Very Big Stick.......2005-06-07

We all know they're out there...God help the bad guys if they ever have to launch. The U.S. Navy has 18 ballistic missle submarines, known as "nukes" or "boomers". The Nebraska ( Big Red ) is one of them. Carrying 24 missles, each with five MIRV'ed ( multiple independent re-entry vehicles ) nuclear weapons ranging in yield from approximately 250 to 475 kilotons ( the Hiroshima bomb was about 70 kilotons ). Meet the men ( no gals, thank you ) that crew this sub. Learn what they do on a typical patrol, how they do it, and to a lesser extent why they do it ( it's not just a job, nor really an adventure ). The one weakness of this book is how sterile it is. Like the sub they man, most of the crew are described as well scrubbed, highly capable and about as salty as a junior executive or assistant college professor. I suppose that's to be expected. No rough and ready warriors are to be portrayed. Might scare the public. Still, I recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Ever want to sail on a submarine? Read this book..........2005-02-20

For so many young men, submarines are the things of fancy - objects of awe that create dreams. Many people are members of the Submarine corps, but for those of us that are not, we have to rely on people like Douglas Waller to help us understand all that goes on during a "regular" patrol.

Waller was granted uncommon access to spend a patrol on board the USS Nebraska (SSBN-739), and gives us a wonderful account of those three months.

Starting with the challenging departure from home port (this particular submarine is not based at a shore port like some ships; instead, it is based slightly inland, which requires travel down a lengthy channel before reaching the ocean), Waller engrosses the reader from page one.

I enjoyed the entire book - I felt as though Waller was giving me the opportunity to spend three months on patrol (although I did it in a few days, reading through the 400+ pages that he has written for us). I never once found myself wanting less - I do not think that he included any non-relevant information or extraneous details.

After reading this book, I have a better understanding of how tough the life of a submariner can be, and why these men demand our ultimate respect. Three months sitting underwater with virtually no human contact except for your shipmates must play havoc with a sailors' psyche, but they all perform admirably.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the United States Naval Submarine Corps.

5 out of 5 stars As close as you'll get to being there..........2004-08-26

As a former submariner on U.S. fast attack submarines, I was skeptical as to how accurate this book could be.

I was hooked before the end of the first chapter -- in fact, I was blown out of the water, pardon the pun.

The author must have not only gotten immense cooperation from the navy, but also from many of the sailors. The level of candor in this book is unparalleled.

The book started to read like a glowing review of submarines, where no one was less than 100% gung-ho navy. But you soon start to see some of the attitudes of real people -- not everyone is happy in their job, many people become exhausted, lonely, and scared -- it's not all medals and photo opportunities.

I can't wait to have my family and friends read this book -- it discusses the life I had lived in subs in detail and clarity that I could never hope to achieve -- you won't get a more accurate picture without signing on the dotted line.

                                                                      1 out of 5 stars BIG RED.......2004-02-26

I am a veteran of 22 years and 17 FBM submarine patrols including 5 years onboard a diesel submarine. What made me throw the book in the garbage can was when the author starts to praise the unique intellengence of a sailor because the individual achived the rank of E-7 or Cheif Petty Officer. That is far from the truth. There are many E-6 Petty Officers in the Submarine Service that have more brains and knowledge than the E-7 that they work for. The only reason an E-7 has so much power is because he is constantly protecting the back side of the other group of ELITE individuals called OFFICERS. It is the Officers that have made the Navy a corrupt branch of the Armed Forces. I work for the United States Army and from what I have seen and experienced the Navy should take lessons from the Army on how to treat individuals with the rank of E-1 thru E-6. I would never let my son join the Navy. It is corrupt. I am quite sure the Navy had a lot to say as to how the book was written and what went into it. It is a sad case when the author stooped so low in writting this book. I regret that I served 22 years in the Navy.

CONSERVATION AND GLOBALIZATION opens with a discussion of these two broad issues as they relate to the author's fieldwork with Maasai herding communities on the margins of Tarangire National Park in Tanzania. It explores different theoretical perspectives (Neo-Marxist and Foucauldian) on globalization and why both are relevant to the case studies presented. Readers are introduced to the practice of multi-sited ethnography and its centrality to the anthropological study of globalization. While drawing on examples from specific Maasai communities, the book is more broadly concerned with the historical and contemporary links between these communities and a global system of institutions, ideas, and money. The ecological incompatibility of Western national park-style conservation with East African savanna ecosystems and Maasai resource management practices, are highlighted. The concept of national parks is traced temporally and geographically from Maasai communities to the enclosure movement in 18th century England and westward expansion in 19th century North America. The relationships of parks to Judeo-Christian assumptions about "man's place in nature," colonial ideologies like Manifest Destiny and the Civilizing Mission, and capitalist notions of private property and "The Tragedy of the Commons," are explored. The book also looks at the latest conservation paradigm of "Community-Based Conservation," and explores its connections to the Soviet Collapse, economic and political liberalization, and the global proliferation of NGOs.

From the first page of his introduction, Jim Igoe's assertiveness in presenting his work on why and how community-based conservation is failing in parts of Tanzania as well as in the United States hits readers hard, sparking their interest in these issues. Over the last decade the term conservation has reached a fluid state in which it presents the world with a new obstacle of maintaining a balance between humans and the environment, which will ideally promote reciprocal productivity in a sustainable measure. Igoe's account of the state of conservation surrounding National Parks in both the United States and Northern Tanzania is unique. Not only was he able to portray his experiences in a manner in which a western reader can relate to, but he was also able to maintain an outside perspective while becoming immersed in a new culture. In affect, Igoe was able to make correlations between two indigenous cultures who are experiencing similar struggles as they have been pushed off their land in the interest of national conservation. Additionally, he critically assesses the current approaches, which are being used to address the issue of conflict between indigenous people, political leaders and environmental conservationists.
I found two dominant strengths in this literature, the first of which is his use of diverse cultural examples. As an undergraduate student with a strong interest in this topic as well as some previous knowledge concerning the issues presented, I found Igoe's narrative style refreshing as well as engaging. Readers are able to get a direct insight into the Maasai culture and a clear historical account of the implications of colonialism and religion. Additionally, Igoe presents the progression of the development of national parks and what resulted in western fortress conservation in Tanzania. Together this information provides a solid background allowing readers who are both educated and new to these topics to gain a better understanding of how the current state of conservation arose. Secondly, his combination of information creates a piece of literature that addresses critical global issues, which can be applied to a wide variety of disciplines. Alone this speaks highly for the books adaptability in various classrooms as well as a reference for professionals in various fields. Furthermore, it supports the fact that in order for new forms of conservation to be successful it is necessary to bring together experts in various social, political, and scientific disciplines.

5 out of 5 stars Conservation Through the Eyes of a Native.......2004-01-04

The social consequences that conservation brings to indigenous people has often been ignored by those trying to protect natural resources and wildlife. Jim Igoe explains and displays what happens and has happened to the people who live outside the famous national parks many of us know and cherish around the world. He presents case studies of how people who live outside the parks have suffered all over the globe. He describes this situation with passion and personal examples, as he lived with many of the people he describes. His work has given him a unique perspective, as he did not travel or live like the typical tourist who wants to view the native flora and fauna that has been protected.

The book's primary focus is East Africa, but Jim includes a substantial amount of material from other regions and cultures. His strength, in this text, is his ability to look at conservation through a global lens, but with a native's perspective. His knack for engaging people at all levels shows in this book. Jim's writing is easy to follow, crystal clear, and relates his first hand experiences and examples in a way that quickly give his work broad appeal. He brings to life the reality of indigenous people struggling to adapt to globalization and the pressure on natural resource base they have relied on for centuries.

This book has appeal at many levels. For high school and undergraduate students it offers an interesting examples of how important anthropology is to understanding the human issues of many global problems. His personal examples and ideas offer discussion points, which once read will not be forgotten. For graduate students Jim offers many ideas on how his own work with NGO's (Non government organizations) got started, progressed, and changed his life. The importance of understanding land tenure, community control, the role of NGO's and different types of parks, as well as the capacity of the local people are all shown to clearly impact both conservation and local people. For conservationists, researchers, and the general public this book offers a unique perspective and voice of the people who have been displaced, lost their livelihoods, and in a few cases successfully adapted to this change.

Globalization has affected us all, and in many cases has had negative consequences for indigenous people. Jim clearly shows that there are much larger forces at work than simply protecting interests of the wildlife and wild areas. Exploring policies of the National Park Service in the United States, as well as policies of other countries, he weaves together the similarities and clearly points out the different ways in which natural resources are managed. In addition to offering an important critique of failed policies, Jim Igoe offers alternative solutions necessary for both the environment and social justice, while providing lessons in history, land tenure and policy making from all over the globe. I recommend this book to all of my students traveling abroad to work with indigenous people.

5 out of 5 stars A clear and challenging account.......2003-12-11

Good authorship requires two things - a story to tell and good way of communicating it. Jim Igoe has both in buckets. Conservation and Globalisation is a clear and challenging story of how conservation practices can disrupt local lives and how apparently straightforward solutions to the problems resulting are riven with complexity and difficulty.

The book is based primarily on fieldwork in East Africa and Prof Igoe's enlivens his account of the problems of understanding the worlds he encountered there with a down to earth uncomplicated style that takes the reader right out to the towns and plains where the work was conducted. This is a must-read for any student contemplating ethnographic or anthropological fieldwork. But its scope is far more than merely East Africa. Prof Igoe's pen takes us to England before the Industrial Revolution and to the latest developments in National Parks in the US, Australia, Nepal, Brazil and Panama. He quite clearly shows how the problems of conservation and civil society are global in their origins and nature and have to be understood through a multitude of sites.

One of the book's greatest strengths is its analysis of civil society, local movements and non-governmental organisations. At a time when much hope and expectation is vested in democratisation and local empowerment this work is a sanguine wake-up call to the problems that these notions bring with them. It quite clearly demonstrates how these ideas are manipulated by local actors, often with very different agendas from global organisations, and transformed by the perpetuated dysfunction typical of the institutions implementing of global development and conservation ideals.

I would, therefore, recommend this book to students, conservationists and development workers in all situations. Its language and style are accessible to all. Its questions and challenges will inform expert practitioners, university teachers and PhD students. This is an excellent book.
