Product Description

This is a book of raw power---Hostel ran a marathon a day, primarily alone, for 2600 miles over the jagged, volcanic spine of the Pacific west---yet a book of unexpected grace. The voice of this crusty runner becomes as mysteriously engaging as the wilderness he crosses. By trail's end, my awe had given way to animal jealousy. I will forever lament that Holtel's experience was not my own.--- Ken Moore, former Olympic Marathoner.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible writing - mediocre story.......2005-09-18

This book suffers from; 1. terrible writing and 2. a story that is only mildly interesting in the first place.

The writing:
Somewhere in the book it is mentioned that Holtel is a man of few words. This becomes painfully obvious in the first few pages of the book. The book is basically a day by day journal of his runs. Every day's entry reads pretty much the same - difficult hills, rocky descents, etc. He does little, if anything, to describe the beauty surrounding him, the people he encounters, or even a brief history of the trail.

The story:
The author likes to say that he "ran the Pacific Crest Trail". While this is technically true he did not cover it in one stretch - as I think most people would assume from this statement. It took him over three summers to cover the distance. This undoubtedly was a great way to spend three summers but in my book it doesn't make him out to be the great hero he would like to be.

He also likes to repeatedly tell about how difficult it was and how amazed everyone he met on the way was when he told them what he was doing. This gets very tiresome very fast.

5 out of 5 stars Hugely inspiring, classic trail adventure book.......2005-06-21

I was so inspired by this book that I called Bob Holtel and left a message on his answering machine, thanking him for giving the world such a wonderful gift. It's not the narrative, which as the disappointed reviewer said, is primarily a trail diary--though a terrifically good one, especially if you're a trailie or trail ultrarunner. No, what's deeply inspiring is Holtel's spirit, which is unique. I swear, there's a wonderful, pure spiritual vibration in the writing. I felt better for having read the book, smiled often while reading it, and have recommended it to many friends who've found the same inspiration in it.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing read.......2005-02-21

Yes it is truly amazing what the man accomplished and
I cannot take anything away from his feat.
His book, on the other hand, I was sorry that I bought.
After the first 3 chapters I gave up. Barely making it
out of the desert. Maybe I'll pick it up at a later date
but I just got tired of "Day 1: I ran", "Day 2: I ran",
"Day 3:I ran, it rained"... yawn.
I need a book to convince my wife to hike for more than
10 days at a stretch and this fell far short.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and humbling.......2003-07-31

I'm one of those vicarious PCT thru-hikers who merely has section hiked portions of the grand trail. Bob Holtel hiked the entire way and his journey is epic and makes for a great read. I devoured the entire book in one sitting and was a little depressed when I was finished. Holtel writes very well and it's as if you're with him throughout every painful mile. When he can't find water for an evening, you're thirsty along with him. When he spies a black bear meandering across the path, you see the animal as well. He really has a story teller's gift and this book is nirvana for anyone who has actually thru hiked the Pacific Crest Trail or who has aspirations of someday doing it.

From the border of Mexico all the way up to Washington, you're in step with Holtel without a boring or wasted word. This is a gripping book and an infectious reading experience.

4 out of 5 stars A personal insight to physical and mental perseverance........1999-03-26

Bob Holtel captures the essence of all essential ingredients that combine to produce an envied athletic endurance achievement. For anyone who has rested on their own laurels of completing a marathon or two, only they can truly appreciate Bob's accomplishment - Running four consecutive marathons every week, 12 weeks straight for three consecutive summers, on uneven rocky trails and at altitude!!! The solitude of it all, the courage to run with pain and complete the task at hand, the enjoyment of simple pleasures of mountain running - these are all brought home in vivid detail through this account. As an athlete I am honored to have shared the adventure. This book has produced a new hero who has proved again that with vision, preparation, planning and courage you can accomplish your dreams.

    Book Description

The Jordanian Dead Sea Rift includes some of the world's most rugged and colorful desert landscapes. Its dramatic canyons are only now beginning to be revealed offering the trekker untamed desert wilderness.

The guidebook is based on 12 months of thorough, day-to-day landscape survey of the Jordanian Rift, as well as on 6 years of leading trekking expeditions in Jordan. It is written from the perspective of an experienced hiker and guide who is also an environmentalist and geologist.

The book describes 68 routes ranging from one to six days. Among the routes are easy walks for dayhikers as well as challenging treks. 12 canyoning routes demand abseiling skills. The book is 264 pages long including 41 detailed maps, 3 true-color satellite images and 24 color pages. It is amazing that a region as spectacular as the Jordanian Dead Sea Rift remained unknown to hikers for so many years - the vast majority of the routes were never described anywhere before! Background information include geography, history, flora, fauna, people and culture, nature conservation and language as well as practical information about when to trek, how to get there, what to take etc.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to an amazing hiking area........2002-10-10

I hiked for 3 days in the Jordanian Dead Sea Rift using a guide and this book. If I had known about this book (the guide loaned it to me), I would not have needed the guide. It is excellent and unlocks to all readers this amazing hiking area. My favorite hikes be far were the ones up the "wadis" (Canyons) -- cool narrow canyons where the trail is a clear, cool stream. I am eager to return to Jordan to hike many more of the described hikes. Best for the hikes along the Dead Sea Rift. Also has hikes near Petra and two at Wadi Rum. Wonderful book despite its steep price.

    5 out of 5 stars a superb trekking guidebook.......2001-01-11

Most of the exploration literature about this amazing stretch of land was written in the 19th and early 20th century, and was devoted mainly to biblical archaeology and to geographic descriptions of desert expanses. It is only recently that numerous beauty spots are beginning to be revealed hidden in the darkness of the gorges amidst the spray of waterfalls, springs and hanging gardens - all exciting, but vulnerable places. If they were destined to be revealed, let it be in the way of Itai Haviv. The book's accurate route descriptions are accompanied by detailed maps, there is valuable practical and regional information and last but not least - dignity and love for humans, plants, animals and lands of the desert. Excerpts from early explorers literature flavor the text in appropriate locations and useful decorative sketches illustrate it. The book's layout is carefully planed creating an atmosphere which contributes to its content. Pleasant to browse through, it feels right in your hand, and you can definitely count on its reliability. (Eli Raz former manager of the Judean Desert field school in Ein Gedi and a BMC guide)

5 out of 5 stars Very Useful, practical and well designed book........2000-10-09

I recomend this book based on three routes I treked with my wife. The best one (as well as the longest one) was wadi Hassa (route 21 in the book), it is a wet and full of surprises two days walk.

The pictures in the book are definitely encourage you to try more and more routes, and after two trips to Jordan, 5 day a time, we are only waiting to try the next wadis we did'nt walk through yet.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Treking book I ever saw.......2000-10-04

The only real full traveling book - Accurate and detailed route descriptions and information, topographical maps, satellite maps, colored photos and all in one, compact and very "user friendly" book. An absolute must for anyone traveling the region and the best guidebook that exists of Jordan.

      Book Description

`Why life?' Questions of this type were for a long time the prerogative of philosophers who left the `how' question to scientists. Nowadays, Darwin's successors no longer have any qualms about addressing the `why' as well as the `how'. Over a century ago, Darwin modestly admitted having 'thrown some light on the origin of species - this mystery of mysteries'. Two major advances in the following decades helped biologists answer many of the questions he left unsolved. The first was the discovery of the laws of heredity, the second that of DNA. Both provided Darwinian theory with the foundations that were lacking and led to the all-embracing neo-Darwinian synthesis. Since then, Theodosius Dobzhansky's aphorism `nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution' has proven true more than once. This does not suit everyone, as evolutionist ideas have not lost their power to cause a scandal.

Darwin toppled man from his pedestal. Evolutionary genetics - the subject of this book - sends the individual crashing. Considered until recently to be the target of selection and the focus of evolution, the individual has been usurped by the gene. The individual is nothing but the gene's avatar.

"Here is the English translation of Les Avatars du gene, originally published by Editions Berlin in 1997. The translation by Tiiu Ojasoo reads very smoothly...a very clear and concise line of argument throughout the book, which uses deceptively simple language and an easy-to-follow layout to discuss evolutionary questions from the observable facts to their most abstract philosophical consequences...for a seminar in which you have time for discussion...this book is an excellent source of and on information."

          Book Description

The progress of science and technology has placed Queueing Theory among the most popular disciplines in applied mathematics, operations research, and engineering. Although queueing has been on the scientific market since the beginning of this century, it is still rapidly expanding by capturing new areas in technology. Advances in Queueing provides a comprehensive overview of problems in this enormous area of science and focuses on the most significant methods recently developed. Written by a team of 24 eminent scientists, the book examines stochastic, analytic, and generic methods such as approximations, estimates and bounds, and simulation. The first chapter presents an overview of classical queueing methods from the birth of queues to the seventies. It also contains the most comprehensive bibliography of books on queueing and telecommunications to date. Each of the following chapters surveys recent methods applied to classes of queueing systems and networks followed by a discussion of open problems and future research directions. Advances in Queueing is a practical reference that allows the reader quick access to the latest methods.

"E-book exclusive extras: 1) Christie biographer Charles Osborne's essay on Poirot's Early Cases; 2) ""The Poirots"": the complete guide to all the cases of the great Belgian detective.

With his career still in its formative years, we learn many things about how Poirot came to exercise those famous 'grey cells' so well. Fourteen of the eighteen stories collected herein are narrated by Captain Arthur Hastings-including what would appear to be the earliest Poirot short story, 'The Affair at the Victory Ball,' which follows soon on the events of The Mysterious Affair at Styles. Two of the stories are narrated by Poirot himself, to Hastings. One, 'The Chocolate Box,' concerns Poirot's early days on the Belgian police force, and the case that was his greatest failure: 'My grey cells, they functioned not at all,' Poirot admits. But otherwise, in this most fascinating collection, they function brilliantly, Poirot's grey cells, challenging the reader to keep pace at every twist and turn.

Gregorius I (540?-604) wrote the four books of the Dialogues to honor the memory of the Italian saints and to instruct his contemporaries. The second book is devoted entirely to St. Benedict and, since its original publication in 1594, has contributed greatly toward making Benedict one of the most venerated figures in Christendom.

5 out of 5 stars The stories of the miracles of a miraculous Saint........2003-03-12

Saint Benedict of Nursia, probably the greatest influence on Western Monasicism, lived a life filled with many miraculous deeds, indeed, so many that Pope Saint Gregory I wrote an entire book about just his miracles. This little gem serves not truly as a collection of stories about miraculous deeds. It is quite possible that not even all these deeds occured during Saint Benedict's lifetime. However, all these deeds point back to lives that were influenced by deep faiths in God and therefore, serve a high purpose.

Included among these tales are the interlocutions of a certain deacon, by name Peter, which help to clarify difficulties with certain theological topics presented by Gregory.

It does not matter if these tales are all true. The subject at hand is the life of a Saint who lived for God in his lifetime and was indeed a blessed individual, influencing others to live for God. I feel that this is an excellent reading for individuals who want to read about the historical and traditional Saint Benedict of Nursia.

                                Book Description

Scorned by allies and enemies alike, the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) was one of the most maligned fighting forces in modern history. Cobbled together by U.S. advisers from the remnants of the French-inspired Vietnamese National Army, it was effectively pushed aside by the Americans in 1965. When toward the end of the war the army was compelled to reassert itself, it was too little, too late for all concerned.

In this first in-depth history of the ARVN from 1955 to 1975, Robert Brigham takes readers into the barracks and training centers of the ARVN to plumb the hearts and souls of these forgotten soldiers. Through his masterly command of Vietnamese-language sources-diaries, memoirs, letters, oral interviews, and more-he explores the lives of ordinary men, focusing on troop morale and motivation within the context of traditional Vietnamese society and a regime that made impossible demands upon its soldiers.

Offering keen insights into ARVN veterans' lives as both soldiers and devout kinsmen, Brigham reveals what they thought about their American allies, their Communist enemies, and their own government. He describes the conscription policy that forced these men into the army for indefinite periods with a shameful lack of training and battlefield preparation and examines how soldiers felt about barracks life in provinces far from their homes. He also explores the cultural causes of the ARVN's estrangement from the government and describes key military engagements that defined the achievements, failures, and limitations of the ARVN as a fighting force. Along the way, he explodes some of the myths about ARVN soldiers' cowardice, corruption, and lack of patriotism that have made the ARVN the scapegoat for America's defeat.

Ultimately, as Brigham shows, without any real political commitment to a divided Vietnam or vision for the future, the ARVN retreated into a subnational culture that redefined the war's meaning: saving their families. His fascinating book gives us a fuller understanding not only of the Vietnam War but also of the problems associated with U.S. nation building through military intervention.

This book is part of the Modern War Studies series.

4 out of 5 stars A very different look at the maligned ARVN.......2007-07-23

This book is a fine introduction to the much maligned ARVN which fought and finally lost a terrible 20 years war. It is only though a social history of the ARVN and the author doesn't delve into pure military matters, such as organisation, weapons and doctrine. The fields he covers in an excellent way are the recruitment, the training, the financial aspects of the soldiers' lives, the crucial role of families as the core of social fabric, the cultural peculiarities of Vietnam and the inability of the US advisers to recognize those facts early enough. Although there is a chapter devoted to ARVN battles, the material is very short to satisfy the reader who wants a deeper analysis. For this, you can look at Willbanks' excellent book "Abandoning Vietnam" which is a terrific addition to the studies of ARVN between 1968 and 1975. Mr Brigham's book has no maps and only a handful of bad quality b/w photos.

1 out of 5 stars high school paper in book form.......2006-05-08

This book resemble a high school paper than a book from a serious historian, the book is quite short, total only 178 pages.

Some of the author arguments seems quite na?ve to anyone who knows Vietnamese history. For instances, the author one of the author claimed is that the ARVN was not effective because they did not use dan cong [civilian laborers ] to handle the war materials or use part time soldiers like the Ly, Tran dynasty. Brigham probably did not know that because of the intensity of the war, neither North or South Vietnam have the leisure of allowing their regular soldiers to be part time soldiers, even the example that Brigham uses about the constriction of the Ly and Tran only applied in peace time. Also, the RVN government did use part time soldiers, they are called Nhan Dan Tu Ve [Civillian Defense Force] and the Nhan Dan Tu Ve did quite well in many cases.

Brigham was correct in saying that the North Vietnamese uses civilians laborers to handle the war materials but he was wrong in his defend and legitimization for this kind of system. According to the book "2000 Ngay Dem Tran Thu Cu Chi" [2000 Nights Defending Cuchi], Duong Dinh Loi, the former military leader of the Vietcong forces in Cu Chi and a 20 years member of the Vietnamese Communist Party reveals that VC and NVA have a policy of forcing civilians in there are of control to contribute 6 months of free labor out of a year, every year to their cause by transporting war materials to various depot. International laws recognize those who transport or carry weapons to be combatant and therefore it is legal for the U.S to bombs and kills these civilians porters, the South Vietnamese recognizes this dilemma therefore they did not force their civilians to become military porters to avoid having civilians kill needlessly, yet for this they were vilified by Brigham . If George W. Bush forces all Americans to have to spend 6 months out of a years transporting war materials in Iraq until the war ends, would Brigham consider this a great idea?

Another point in this book that I have a problem with, have to do with Brigham mistaken of the often use Vietnamese phrase "giu nuoc, giu nha [defending the country, defending the home/family", the word giu nha means defending the home or family, yet Brigham take this to means the ARVN only fight to defend their family and Brigham uses some of the quotes from the former ARVN and their family out of context to support this point.

Brigham contention that many of the ARVN were former French supporter is inaccurate in that many ARVN formerly joined the Vietminh to fight against the French and only left Vietminh after the "anti Nationalist, anti-bourgeois" purges within the Vietminh, my father himself was one of the victim of such purge. Brigham also ignore the fact that uncle Ho signed the Modus Viviendi agreement with Sainteny on March 6 1945, allowing the French to legally send troops to Vietnam, Ho also cooperate with the French in exterminating non Communist parties in Vietnam, was broke out between Ho and the French in 1946 only after the French have exterminated the Quoc Dan Dang, Dai Viet and other non-Communist parties.

The ARVN was formed on May 11 1950 after France and Vietnamese Emperor Bao Dai sign the treaty of Auriol on March 8, 1949 in which France agreed to grant Vietnam her independent. According to Archimedes L. A. Patti , the former OSS agent in Vietnam, the treaty of Auriol gave Vietnam something that Ho Chi Minh have always demanded from the French but did not get. Brigham also ignores the fact that the Vietminh were use by the Mao as mercenaries to keep the Kuomintang forces in southern China from being move north to fight Mao, this fact was confirmed by the official Socialist Republic of Vietnam official history book.

Although the main focus of this book is about the ARVN and their family, the book completely ignore the plight of the ARVN and their family after the war when over 1 millions former government officials and former ARVN were sent to the Corrective Labored Re-education Camps without trials, some interned for as long as 18 years. Over 165,000 died or executed in these "re-education" camps, another 100,000 died in the New economic zone. ARVN family members were sent to work as slave laborers in the so-called New Economic Zones.

Another problem with Brigham book is that it completely ignore recently release MACV documents like the Abrams tapes in assessing the ARVN, instead he uses only information from the Socialist Republic of Vietnam government archive, in fact very few books written by former ARVN in America was use by Brigham in his book except for the book Doi Quan Ngu, great South Vietnamese author like Phan Nhat Nam who is currently residing in California was not interview nor was his works use by Brigham.

Recently the Vietnam Center in Lubbock held a conference assessing the ARVN called "ARVN: Reflections and Reassessment After 30 years", a large number of respected historians was there including James H. Willbanks, Mark Moyar, Bill Laurie (Brigham was a no show). Anyone interested in the ARVN can go the Vietnam Center at Lubbock website and get the whole conference video and papers for free instead of paying for this high school paper.

4 out of 5 stars Tough to read narrative but important book...to better understand Vietnam.......2006-05-05

Like most academic books Brigham's latest work reads like a history book or a Ph.D. thesis. It has five chapters totaling 130 pages. The remaining 47 pages are Notes, Bibliography and Index. Thus the subtitle, "Life and Death of the South Vietnamese Army," is not quite complete just like one of the blurbs written by Jeffrey Kimball, "The best book I've read on the ARVN." Not surprisingly all the endorsements came from academics, most of whom have been harshly critical of the ARVN and the Republic of Vietnam in general. What separates this book from the others is Brigham's focus on ordinary South Vietnamese soldiers and veterans and not its audacious and flashy generals. Without a concrete vision and solid leadership by South Vietnamese officials, ARVN soldiers fell into the "family syndrome" and in the end, took care of their own. Not much was left to defend in 1975 when there was no longer a country, an army, or an ally to fight alongside. Little coverage is given to the ARVN's finest hours at An Loc, Xuan Loc, Quang Tri and the Cambodia and Laos incursions. Then again this is not a battle book per se. Chapter Five, "Families," summarizes the ARVN. "Exhausted, demoralized, and continually defeated, ARVN troops struggle to find meaning in the war." One thing is certain. No other army will ever be as scrutinized by their allies, on the battlefield, in the media and the ivory towers, than the ARVN. Not even after 31 years since the war had ended.

The book is very simple in its language. It explains the main characteristics and players of the American Government. Being an American Government book, its language and tone are very patriotic and optimistic. I would not recommend this book to a person who already disagrees with the government and is already informed about the basics; however, if you keep asking yourself, why did he do that, this book is for you.

1 out of 5 stars This federally subsidized textbook chips away at our national sovereignty.......2005-11-12

This book praises our dependence upon the United Nations, downplays the Founders' vision on the importance of federalism, and desecrates the Bill of Rights -- both ignoring the Tenth Amendment and suggesting that our Second Amendment rights are no longer relevant.

This book isn't centrist is is socialism and does not have very much to do with "we the people" Read the federalist and anti federalist papers especially and get to know our histroy from those who made it. not some New world order professor who is pushing that the second admendment is meaningless. I think the following quote sums it up.
"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government."

                                      -- Thomas Jefferson
This book promote a tyranical system ratehr than a federalist one. It is incredible that it is being used as a text book for children to tell them thier rights are not relevant anymore.

4 out of 5 stars Centrist Presentation, Readable for a Textbook.......2005-02-15

Patterson gives a good overview of the formation of the US government and the objectives and innovations of the system. His presentation is balanced, without an obvious agenda or bias. The style is very readable for a text, which many students should appreciate. A good text for an intoductry course. It doesn't contain many insights into problems facing the system, and steers clear of criticism in some instances where it might seem relevant. However, overall I would recommend this title.

                                              Book Description

This brief, comprehensive book provides a lively, narrative introduction to American Government and Politics. The approach of We the People is to present the material with a currency and relevancy that captures the vivid world of real-life politics. In addition, We the People challenges students to think critically by giving contextual understanding of major concepts and issues, encouraging them to think about the implications for themselves and society. We the People delves deeper into the basics than most brief books, and each of the 17 chapters (including 3 policy chapters) concludes with a reading selection as well as an extensive bibliography. We the People is accompanied by a CD and Online Learning Center that is unsurpassed in American Government.
