Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All you want and need to know about Stevia.......2000-11-27

I have done extensive research on the history and uses of Stevia. The most common roadblocks I have come across are 1. Scare tactics by artificial sweetner companies that warn of the *dangers* of this natural alternative 2. Companies that are selling Stevia themselves that write glowing fluff that, although may be true, don't provide any facts about what Stevia is or where it's history lies.

Then I found this book. Mr. Richard brings an his extensive research and knowledge to the pages and introduces the reader to Stevia from every angle. Taking the time to include growing tips, history and even recipes, this author has done an outstanding job of showing the benefits of Stevia and how easily it can and is used in the world. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in incorporating this healthful plant into their life and for anyone who wonders what all the hype is about.

    Book Description

There is a growing appreciation of traditional medical systems as a source of considerable knowledge of the medicinal properties of plants. Traditional medicines have the potential to offer leads to identifying potentially valuable chemicals that can be developed into new and more effective drugs, including safer contraceptives. The island Pacific is an excellent arena in which to search for such chemicals: the area contains plant species not found elsewhere there is every indication that many of the plants used more generally in traditional Pacific medicine may be efficacious - of 74 plants surveyed in one study 86% showed pharmacological activity in many Pacific traditions, knowledge of medicinal use is transmitted between generations as part of an inherited body of ethnomedical knowledge.

This book documents all the available information on plants that have been used traditionally for anti-fertility and fertility purposes in the Pacific region, and indicates which of these plants hold the most promise for providing new anti-fertility agents. It also records instances in which the plant has been used outside the region.

          Book Description

In this unique study, Rawlins traces and investigates the varieties, tensions, and functions of friendship for both males and females throughout the life course. Using both conceptual and illustrative chapters, the book portrays the various degrees of involvement, choice, risk, ambivalence, and ambiguity within friendships, and explores the emotional texture of interactions among friends. Friendship Matters concludes with an examination of the prospects for friendship within our postmodern blur of public and private domains and discursive sites.

                Book Description

This book presents the general theory of categorical closure operators together with examples and applications to the most common categories, such as topological spaces, fuzzy topological spaces, groups, and abelian groups. The main aim of the theory is to develop a categorical characterization of the classical basic concepts in topology via the newly introduced concept of categorical closure operators. This permits many topological ideas to be introduced in a topology-free environment and imported afterwards into a new category, which often yields interesting new insights into its structure. The first part of the book deals with the general theory, starting with basic definitions and gradually moving to more advanced properties. The second part includes applications to the classical concepts of epimorphisms, separation, compactness and connectedness. Every chapter ends with exercises. A comprehensive list of references for the reader who wants to consult original works and a good index complete the book. "Categorical Closure Operators" is self-contained and can be considered as a graduate level text for topics courses in category theory, algebra, and topology. The book appeals mainly to graduate students and researchers in category theory and categorical topology, and to those interested in categorical methods applied to the most common concrete categories. The reader is expected to have some basic knowledge of algebra, topology and category theory; however, all recurrent categorical concepts are included in a preliminary chapter.

                  Book Description

This book provides a comprehensive categorical theory of closure operators, with applications to topological and uniform spaces, groups, R-modules, fields and topological groups, as well as partially ordered sets and graphs. In particular, closure operators are used to give solutions to the epimorphism and co-well-poweredness problem in many concrete categories.
The material is illustrated with many examples and exercises, and open problems are formulated which should stimulate further research.
Audience: This volume will be of interest to graduate students and professional researchers in many branches of mathematics and theoretical computer science. Knowledge of algebra, topology, and the basic notions of category theory is assumed.

                      Book Description

This edition pairs Mary Hays's Memoirs of Emma Courtney (1796) with Amelia Alderson Opie's Adeline Mowbray; or the Mother and the Daughter (1804). Emma Courtney represents the radical side of the debates in England about appropriate behavior for women in love at the end of the eighteenth century. Adeline Mowbray has been more often read as a warning about the dangers of putting into practice the radical reforms advocated by women like Hays. Reading together these novels by women who were both close friends and associates of Mary Wollstonecraft in the heady revolutionary days complicates their easy division into "radical" and "conservative" or "Jacobin" and "anti-Jacobin" categories. Debates of the time on abolition, childhood education, rakish masculinity, and the consequences for women of sexuality outside of marriage are central to both of these novels, and readily explored by offering both under a single cover. The College Publishing edition includes an introductory essay detailing the importance and problems of biographical approaches to these two novels in particular, and works by women writers in general. Additional short essays are interpolated throughout, providing helpful contextual material, while the varied responses of eighteenth and nineteenth-century readers are represented by a selection of contemporary reviews of each novel in the appendix.

                      Book Description

'"How strange and irrational," thought Adeline, "are the prejudices of society! Because an idle ceremony has not been muttered over me at the altar, I am liable to be thought a woman of vicious inclinations, and to be exposed to the most daring insults."' Encouraged by her mother to pursue an interest in radical social ideas, Adeline Mowbray innocently puts her theories of idealized love into practice. Her attempt to live with the philosopher Frederic Glenmurray outside marriage is condemned by both her mother and society. Adeline and Glenmurray's relationship becomes the focal point for Opie's satire on society's attitudes to education, women, marriage, masculine and feminine codes of honour, filial loyalty and the struggle to justify individual choice. Personal as well as political, Adeline Mowbray (1804) is loosely based on the relationship between Opie's friends, Mary Wollstonecraft and William Godwin. Written in a period of conservative reaction in Britain and recalling the earlier radical era of the 1790s the novel offers a gripping exploration of the `world as it is' and the `world as it ought to be.'

                      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A title that should not have gone under.......2006-06-14

Perhaps one of those novels hardest to describe, Adeline Mowbray is what we think to be a fictional account of Mary Wollstonecraft's life and affair with one Gilbert Inlay. Regardess of whether or not Amelia Opie meant to do so and for what reason, this book has apparantly gone underground. Despite its being perfect for discussion in our day and age where the value of marriage and whether or not it should be binding, or permitted, few people even know Opie's name. Had I not been required to read it for college, I would never have known it existed. Now that I have read it I wonder how it could possibly have ever disappeared the way it has.

Adeline Mowbray is the daughter of a woman who, despite being a 'genuis' has little common sense and raises her daughter to be a radical pursuer of strange and exciting new theories. This leadss to her entering a relationship with Glenmurray, a young man who published theories attacking the institute of marriage. This is followed by a tumultuous and psychologically complex voyage. Glenmurray wishes to marry Adeline, whom he dearly loves to save her from social disgrace yet he suffers from his conflicting desire not to fall in her eyes by changing his ideals. Adeline realizes it is not so easy to follow through with her ideals as she thought, becoming an outcast from society, not being deemed suitable for contact with other 'respectable' women.

The irony of this novel will never cease to amaze you. Adeline will throw her hands to the heavens and worship her God--the very one that created the institute of marriage and called it holy. The women who are deemed socially acceptable because they are married are for the most part petty and hypocritical. And when Glenmurray refuses to comply with the social norm of the duel, he is still accepted in society while Adeline is not.

The simple discrimination of society against Adeline because she is a woman having an affair out of wedlock and Glenmurray as a man having an affair out of wedlock yet still being pefectly acceptable hits home pretty sharp.

This novel has in its pure subject matter, so much to discuss and argue and talk about, more so than many of the things we read into other classics for their lack of any sort of this material. This book will spark discussions, make you think, bring up all sorts of questions you never dared ask. Whatever conclusion you may draw from it, that marriage should be permited, or that it is not needed at all, this novel will certainly bring something into question you never considered before.

As a novel in and of itself, however, it lacks in the sense that it is not so mucha a story as a treatise on Opie's views and theories. The characters are there to condemn or to applaud, not there for their own sake. Characterisation is sacrificed at times simply to serve the plot and its themes. There is definately a forced quality and a moral, didactic tone throughout the novel. You are always aware that it was made for a purpose, to teach us a lesson, show us an idea. But it remains an interesting and thought-provoking read.

                                      Product Description

This beautifully profound four color publication includes photos and women's personal words and poetry from around the world. Printed in English, the collection gives the reader the understanding that all women, no matter what age, culture, race, or religion, share similar feelings about themselves and their lives. Susan B and Me is at the amusing, heart wrenching, and thought-provoking. The book's underlying questions ask why the women's movement has stalled worldwide, and what early suffragists would think of contemporary women. The book was produced in honor of the 100th year death anniversary of Women's Rights Champion, Susan B. Anthony. This book is ideal for women's studies groups and classes.

                                            Book Description

Tank destroyers were the US Army's response to blitzkrieg, and were based around the concept of mounting a large anti-tank gun on a light, fast moving vehicle. They served in the Mediterranean, Pacific, and North-West Europe theatres, and were also supplied to other Allied armies. These vehicles form an attractive modelling subject; their open turrets provide plenty of opportunity for detail work, as demonstrated here by the author in clear step-by-step instructions. Packed with tips and techniques from a leading modeller and Allied armour expert, this title covers the M10, M18, M36, and M39, and features modelling projects in 1/35th and 1/72nd scale.

                                            Typical Osprey book.
The book's description alludes to the techniques of modeling.
                                            It's not there.
Makes a good reference book though

I was hoping for some intelligent insight into Hillary Clinton when I bought this book. Clearly, much can be said on both sides of this subject. I am trying to listen carefully to both and then make up my mind about her.

This is the equivalent to a rant from a right-wing Rosie O'Donnell. Don't waste your money on this rehash of old news.

It is quite an amazing co-incidence that at least in some ways this book presented as "fact" seems to mirror a book presented as "fiction" which is entitled The Empress Project. Both books tell of an American woman of boundless and unbridled ambition seeking ruthlessly to become president of the United States. Author Tyrrell calls Hillary "Madame Hillary", while Dr. Little, author of the other book, writes a story of political intrigue about a CHICOM plot to make an evil American woman Empress of America. Are the similarities of these two books merely coincidental ?The Empress Project

Whatever Hillary Clinton says and does is perfectly alright with me! If Hillary says it, then it's the truth. Hillary is perfect in every way! I love Hillary so very much!

                                            R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr. should be given a lot of thanks for exposing the liar named Hillary Rodham.

Thank you R. Emmett Tyrrell Jr.!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Swing and a miss, a good article expanded to a book.......2004-08-19

Plainly stated, I was disappointed with this book. I am certainly part of the target audience for this book, being pretty disgusted with the Clinton duo. However, what I hoped for was a factual tome of the flaws, failings, and deceit of the junior senator from NY. What I got was a repetetive, smarmy, and poorly constructed screed against her that offered little new information and was so partisan in tone that it became untrustworthy even as a source of dirt. Authors on both sides of the political debate need to realize that too snippy a tone tends to turn off the average reader.

In more detail, the book is full of allegations of radical beliefs, wretched interpersonal skills, and bald-faced deceit but precious few illustrations of same. Don't tell me that Senator Clinton is a horrid person to work for with no sense of two-way loyalty, give me examples. Don't quote the radicals who supposedly influenced her beliefs, show me examples of her demonstrating those beliefs.

In short, while there is some interesting information in this book, it misses the mark. It could have been an exhaustive record of the senator's changing of beliefs, opportunism, and political deceit. Intead, we get an annoyingly repetetive and shrill attack without a great deal of substance. For anyone but those who simply want to nod and agree without learning anything new, this book is a wash.
