Horseshoe Crabs and Shorebirds: The Story of a Food Web

Book Description
The American horseshoe crab that comes ashore on the East Coast in vast numbers to mate and nest is much the same creature that haunted the coast before the time of the dinosaurs. It is among the world's most intensely studied marine invertebrates, critical to our understanding of many groups of organisms, both modern and extinct, and crucial to the ecology of large estuaries such as the Delaware Bay. Some stocks of this great survivor, whose ancestors made it through the mass extinction some 286 million years ago, have been severely depleted today because of overfishing and habitat destruction.
Carl N. Shuster, Jr., H. Jane Brockmann, and Robert B. Barlow are at the forefront of research on Limulus polyphemus, and in this book they bring together twenty scientists who have worked on all aspects of horseshoe crab biology to compile the first fully detailed, comprehensive view of the species. An indispensable resource, the volume describes the horseshoe crab's behavior, natural history, and ecology; its anatomy, physiology, distribution, development, and life cycle; the puzzle of its immune system; and its present management and future conservation.

Book Description
The environmental history of the past three decades has heightened awareness that the volume of water available in the Nile Basin is not sufficient to meet reliably the current levels of water demand, quite apart from rapidly growing needs. The environmental element of the complex matter of evaluating and managing the international water resource of the Nile is addressed in this volume. The book deals with the global and regional hydrology, examines the scope and emphasis of water resource planning in the Nile Basin over the past century and identifies future options. The material is intended to be relevant to environmental scientists, government officials and water resource professionals in both national and international agencies, as well as those concerned with the environment and hydraulic engineering in the academic community.

Book Description
The CRC Handbook of Enthalpy Data of Polymer-Solvent Systems presents data that is as essential to the production, process design, and use of polymers as it is to understanding the physical behavior and intermolecular interactions in polymer solutions and in developing thermodynamic polymer models. Providing an all-encompassing collection of current enthalpy data for all types of polymer solutions, this handbook is a ready companion with Christian Wohlfarth's previously published handbooks of thermodynamic data for copolymer solutions, aqueous polymer solutions, and polymer solutions at elevated pressures, which contain only a small amount of enthalpic data in comparison to the data presented here. This volume contains 1770 data sets that include enthalpies of mixing and dilution for the entire concentration range as well as partial enthalpies of mixing and solution at infinite dilution. Special appendices allow scientists to access specific systems and data easily. The CRC Handbook of Enthalpy Data of Polymer-Solvent Systems is a practical, one-stop resource that allows polymer chemists, biochemists, chemical engineers, materials scientists, and physical chemists involved in both industrial and laboratory processes to quickly retrieve relevant information as needed.

Customer Reviews:
Can be understood by an undergraduate physics major........1999-01-15
This is a book written for mathematicians, yet it is accessible to an upper level physics undergraduate. Much of the book explains concepts very well, at other times I was very frustrated. The DOS based software included with the book did not seem to work as billed on my systems. A high point of the book is Walkers 2 dimensional Fourier optics section. This section does an excellent job on a complex topic.

Book Description
This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition brings together one of literature's most famous ghost stories and one of Henry James's most unusual novellas. In
The Turn of the Screw, a governess is haunted by ghosts from her young charges past; Virginia Woolf said of this masterpiece of psychological ambiguity and suggestion, We are afraid of something unnamed, of something, perhaps, in ourselves...Henry James...can still make us afraid of the dark.
In his rarely anthologized novella
In the Cage, James brings his incomparable powers of observation to the story of a clever, rebellious heroine of Britain's lower middle class. Hortense Calisher, in her Introduction, calls it a delicious story, the more so because it confounds what we expect from James.
Customer Reviews:
Sinister, spellbinding, suspenseful, and very hard to put down!.......2006-10-12
Turn of the Screw may be the best haunting story I've ever come across. James is masterful in his unfolding of the tale. His quiet, subtly restrained manner in which he inspires a sense of discomfort and unease in the reader. This story was 'just right', in that everything felt natural and in-character. There was no abruptness, no sense of 'hmmm, page 100 already? Better wrap this up!', no Scooby-Doo sort of ending. He figuratively turns the screw on the reader, by never easing up the tension of the story. Instead, he slowly increases the feeling of dread.
I have not yet read "In the Cage", but eventually plan to. The first story alone made it well worth the purchase price.
The one thing I didn't like was the footnotes. The person who wrote the footnotes should be repeatedly and stingingly slapped with the flat open palm of someone's hand (I'll volunteer for the job). If you have any background in English literature (i.e., you read and understood the Brontes, Jane Austen or Charles Dickens fairly easily), don't bother with looking them up. You'll be annoyed with the time you've wasted cutting out of the story and flipping to the back, just to see something painfully obvious explained out. If you can't derive most of the context of the stuff that's footnoted, just from reading the book, chances are you're not really going to enjoy this book anyway.
That being said, this book still gets five stars from me because I like the fonts and the paper Modern Classics Library uses. I have a number of their books, the bindings seem to hold pretty well, and the cover usually has a tasteful piece of art that usually suits the story inside.
Customer Reviews:
First of the Trilogy.......2007-04-23
Although I was a Peace Corps volunteer I did not read this in preparation of my service (although I wish I had). I was drawn to this book after reading a friend's copy of Moritz's "Farm on the River of Emeralds" which was such an excellent book I wanted to read more of Moritz's writing. I was not disappointed by "Living Poor". As referred to in the subtitle this is a chronicle of Moritz's experience joining the Peace Corps and traveling to Ecuador where he spends most of the next four years working with the people of Rio Verde, a village on the Pacific Coast near Esmeraldas.
I think "Farm on the River of Emeralds" is a better literary work and reflects the development of Moritz as a writer as well as his enriched experience over time in Ecuador. This did not reduce my enjoyment and appreciation of "Living Poor". This is a book that reveals poverty as deeply and as powerfully as Rohinton Mistry's novel on India, "A Fine Balance".
Moritz is an excellent observer of people and writes of their appearance, mannerism, and background with portrait accuracy but also with humor and sensitivity. I remember a description of a woman in the village that was feared by all the families. She was a bruja, a witch that could cast spells and control people with her "brews of secret leaves". Moritz meets and describes her..."She had great square teeth, strong and yellow, and her smile was like some aristocratic but fading French countess right out of Proust. She was in her sixties but her hair was still dark and tied in two teenaged pigtails; they stuck out wildly from out beneath a limp and incredibly well used straw hat, the top of which was broken and hinged. When you talked to her on the beach and a breeze was blowing the top of the hat kept opening and closing mysteriously, as though it was trying to send you a secret message without..her seeing."
I did not read Moritz as having a dark perspective as mentioned by some previous reviewers here. He is just very honest, perhaps a little self depreciative but very capable of showing the struggles, joy and humor of the people of this little village in Ecuador. I now consider him one of my favorite authors and very much look forward to reading "Farm on the River Emeralds" again and his last book about his life in Ecuador "The Saddest Pleasure".
Awesome book!.......2007-04-06
A great read. It was so hard to put down. Doing Americorps, I could definitely relate. This will definitely be one of my all time favorites.
Peace Corps Experience.......2006-06-25
My Peace Corps experience was quite different from Mr. Thomson's on the surface. I went to an Arabic country in Africa as opposed to a South American Country. I was in my 20s as opposed to late 40s. My training was in country and quite different. I was a teacher instead of a farmer and lived in a large metropolitan city.
However, having said all that there were several times I thought"Whoa!" this is exactly what happened to me! And this is something that no non-PCV would ever understand.
For example, he described the emotional feeling he had from living in Equador similar to the feeling of first falling in love except that this feeling was constant. I had that feeling about Morocco and I STILL have it to this day 30 years later.
He doesn't sugar coat the experience either and describes the hardships of which there were many. Underlying these descriptions were a message that they made him a better person. Ah, how I can relate.
Excellent book and I highly recommend it.
Master writer, big heart, great humor, old shoe, the real thing..........2005-06-23
This remains one of my favorite books of all time...it's survived four library donations in the past 30 years...
Tried to find Thomsen before he died, unfortunately could not...not sure he ever knew he was a great author...hope others got to him with that snippet of info and that he died happy...
He nailed the peace corps...gave it the best it ever had from any of us...i love the man and wish we had more like him...
His other one is good too..........2003-04-30
I'm in the process of getting my hands on Living Poor, but also highly recommend Thomsen's book "The Farm on the River of Emeralds." Where 'Living Poor' sounds like it has more of an ex-pat spin on it, "The Farm" focuses more on his on personal experiences, observations, and self-questioning in running a farm with his Ecuadorian business partner, Ramon. Very interesting.

Book Description
A study of the Scottish troops who bravely served in World War I, this book looks at everything from food and free time to brutal trench warfare, using letters and quotes from soldiers who actually fought.
Book Description
How has television affected our everyday experience? This question has generated endless arguments and speculations, but no thinker has addressed the issue with such force and originality as Joshua Meyrowitz in No Sense of Place. Advancing a daring and sophisticated theory, Meyrowitz shows how television and other electronic media create new social situations that are no longer shaped by where we are or who is "with" us. While other media experts have limited the debate to program content, Meyrowitz focuses on the ways in which television has rearranged "who knows what about whom," making it impossible for us to behave with each other in traditional ways. He shows how television has lifted many of the veils of secrecy between children and adults, men and women, and politicians and average citizens. The result is a series of revolutionary changes, including the blurring of age, gender, and authority distinctions.
Customer Reviews:
Makes sense of 20th century chaos.......2001-02-28
This is a book that will make you say, "That's why that is," over and over. It takes many of the rapid changes and social movements of the last half century and shows how they are all in fact related to the development of tv and other media. It reads like a novel, too.
A solid framework in which to negotiate a mediated culture.......2001-02-12
Revisiting and moving beyond his predecessors, Meyrowitz's book provides a wonderful framework that allows the reader of any level to appreciate the role of mediated communication in shaping social spheres and orders...both historically and today.
Written in a style that avoids the high-semantics of academia and avoids the vague poetics of McLuhan, Meyrowitz's book is perhaps most fascinating because of the fact that it was written fifteen years ago: before the internet boom, before the merger-mania of media conglomeritization, etc. In my opinion, Meyrowitz's ideas are still very relevant and are a true signifier of the brilliance of this text.
Bloated prose, uninformed opinion.......2000-12-14
Does the author really believe that TV offers us an intimate look at the life and soul of the personalities it portrays? Obviously, political figures have devised means to manipulate the media via their own machinations and through their own media consultants. I would argue that so called "parasocial" communication (an example of academic newspeak the author employs) in fact results in a false sense of security regarding our knowledge of politicians. ... To say that a glimpse at a politician or other public personality via television offers us an intimate look at his or her behavior is like saying that watching Mel Gibson play Hamlet tells us about Gibson's personal life. Has this author ever heard of the concept of "acting?" As P. T. Barnum stated, "There's a sucker born every minute.... Just as Plato warned about art as being an artifice of an artifice (that is the replication of the "real" which is already removed from true essence) this book is a fantasy of a fantasy; unfortunately it doesn't seem the author can tell the difference between reality and fantasy.
A leisury yet deep analysy of the impact of television.......1998-07-08
To understand the impact of media, you have two choiches: you decode McLuhan and DeKerkhove (at least try), or you read this book. Meyrowitz writes from the perspective of a child and of a socioligist of media, describing how television has changed forever the way we relate to space, both public and private. With theatrical recollections of family scenes from the 60's and cultured references to other studies Meyrowitz manages to make us look at TV and media in general as we never did before.
MUST READ, if interested in the impact of electronic media!.......1997-05-05
Joshua Meyrowitz takes the reader through a fantastic and comprehensive perspective on the impact of electronic media. Beyond McLuhan, Meyrowitz challenges the reader to consider the formulative role of media, irrespective of it's content. Meyrowitz clearly details the impact of electronic media on one's perception of place, and the unrecognized rearrangement of social forums. This book is a MUST READ for those interested in the impact of television and computer networking technologies on contemporary social life--if understood, it will forever change your perceptions of media

Freshwater Ecoregions of North America: A Conservation Assessment (World Wildlife Fund Ecoregion Assessments)
ASIN: 1559637226 |
Book Description
Lauded in the New York Times science section as "a sweeping analysis of the ecosystems of the United States and Canada" this volume represents an unparalleled source of information and data for scientists and conservationists working in North America. Using a rigorous ecoregion-based approach, rather than the more common state-by-state analysis, a team of scientists from World Wildlife Fund has produced a stunning and comprehensive assessment of the current status of biodiversity in North America north of Mexico.
Terrestrial Ecoregions of North America begins with six chapters that present the rationale for the ecoregion approach, describe the biological distinctiveness of North American ecoregions, assess the level of threats facing each, present a conservation agenda for the next decade, and set forth recommendations for preserving and restoring biodiversity. In addition, nineteen essays by leading scientists address specific topics such as the effect of cattle on riparian areas, and the problem of invasive exotic plant species. Following the main text are substantial appendixes that describe each ecoregion in detail, including information on:
- unique features of the ecoregion that set it apart from the others
- its biological distinctiveness, threats to habitats and wildlife, and important sites for conservation
- activities that enhance biodiversity conservation in the ecoregion
- conservation partners working in the ecoregion, including addresses and other contact information
- the relationship of the ecoregion to other classification schemes
- literature cited for that ecoregion
One of the most useful and unique features of the book is the series of thirty full-color maps that present essential information about the ecoregions and the biodiversity they contain in a compelling and easily understood graphical format.
The ecoregion-based approach has been adopted by many conservation groups as the most effective way to ward off massive losses of biodiversity, and this volume provides a road map to that important new strategy. With a significant number of previously unpublished data sets and new analytic approaches, Terrestrial Ecoregions of North America is both a guidebook for describing the biological wealth of the continent and a handbook for restoring and conserving it. It will be an essential reference for anyone concerned with biodiversity conservation in North America.
