              Book Description

Fodor’s see it South Africa is perfect for travelers who want to understand South African history and culture before they arrive, and experience the country like a native while they’re there.

Overflowing with brilliant color photography, this is the ONLY illustrated guide that provides the practical information that you need while traveling–complete restaurant and hotel reviews with exact prices for lodging and dining (not ranges), plus time-saving tips and how to avoid crowds, exact admission prices to key sights, great photo stops, and special notes on “kid-friendly” attractions throughout.

              Hotels
Our detailed reviews represent the best accommodations in South Africa, in all price ranges.
From super luxurious safari camps to backpacker hostels, we’ll tell you what to expect in terms of price and quality through extensive coverage of hotels and their surrounding neighborhoods, exact prices of double-occupancy rooms (including breakfast), plus pictures of hotel facilities and guestrooms.

              Restaurants
If you want to experience the best that South Africa has to offer, pay particular attention to our outstanding restaurant coverage that will help you choose from the thousands of local eateries that cater to every budget and dining experience. From affordable, cafés to places where you can splurge –like Le Quartier Français in the Western Cape–you’ll find it in see it South Africa. Each review covers house signature dishes, ambiance, ACTUAL prices for a two-course lunch and a three-course dinner (for two people), hours of operation, and what transportation will get you there.

              The Sights
Whether you explore one of Kimberley's diamond mines, enjoy world-class wines on the Western Cape, walk the mystical Amatola Mountains which inspired J.R.R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings, or take in the sunset from the top of Table Mountain, see it South Africa will take you there. Accessibly written to help you navigate throughout the country without missing a thing, each attraction includes exact admission prices, what galleries and museums not to miss, and where to stop for quick bites and refreshing drinks along the way. Sights are also rated for their “value”, “walkability”, “historic and cultural interest”, plus we suggest fantastic “photo stops” and entertaining and age-appropriate “kid-friendly” attractions throughout the book.

              What to Do?
Our shopping walks will lead you to cutting-edge fashions to fit all budgets, from hip streetwear to expensive fashions for your feet. But, South Africa has much more to offer than just sight-seeing and shopping. Fodor’s see it South Africa provides insider information on classical, theatrical, and cinematic performances, Mexico’s music scene (live jazz to underground youth centres), nightlife, spectator and activity sports, and festivals and events.

              Atlas and Maps

Detailed neighborhood maps are incorporated throughout the book to help you navigate on historic walks, shopping tours, or to find a restaurant. Plus, a 16-page atlas details each road and path with highlights of important landmarks, parks, metro stations, and car parking areas.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The Cytokine Handbook.......2000-08-19

This book covers most of the information for people who is interested in cytokine research. The content is detailed enough for professionals who is actually working in the area of cell signaling or drug discovery. It may not be a good starting point for amateur readers.

                    Book Description

Advances in Boron and the Boranes Edited by Joel F. Liebman Arthur Greenberg Robert E. Williams This volume, coedited with R. E. Williams of the Loker Research Institute of the University of Southern California, is a collection of interwoven essays in homage to Professor Anton B. Burg, a pioneer of modern inorganic chemistry. The book inseparably overlaps inorganic, organic, and organometallic chemistry; applications to homogeneous catalysis and drug design complement models more of interest to physical and theoretical chemists. Two Nobel laureates, Professors Lipscomb and Pauling, have contributed essays to the volume.

                        Book Description

These are the proceedings of the Conference on Coding Theory, Cryptography, and Number Theory held at the U.S. Naval Academy during October 25-26, 1998. This book concerns elementary and advanced aspects of coding theory and cryptography. The coding theory contributions deal mostly with algebraic coding theory. Some of these papers are expository, whereas others are the result of original research. The emphasis is on geometric Goppa codes, but there is also a paper on codes arising from combinatorial constructions. There are both, historical and mathematical papers on cryptography. Several of the contributions on cryptography describe the work done by the British and their allies during World War II to crack the German and Japanese ciphers. Some mathematical aspects of the Enigma rotor machine and more recent research on quantum cryptography are described. Moreover, there are two papers concerned with the RSA cryptosystem and related number-theoretic issues.

                        Book Description

This book collects together the two most vital "automatic" texts of Surrealism. Breton's prefatory essay The Automatic Message relates this technique to the underlying concepts and aesthetic of the Surrealist movement.

The Magnetic Fields (1919) was the first work of literary Surrealism and is thus one of the foundations of modern European thought and writing. This authorised translation is by the poet David Gascoyne, himself a member of the group and a friend of both authors.

The Immaculate Conception (1930) traces the interior and exterior life of man from Conception and Intra-Uterine Life to Death and The Original Judgement. The central section is a celebrated series of "simulations" of various types of mental instability.

Maurice Nadeau (in The History of Surrealism) described the book as "An astonishing series of poems in prose, more brilliant than those of either Breton or Eluard on his own . . . if all that remained of the Surrealist movement were the pages of The Immaculate Conception, man, alerted, could not turn away from the astounding mystery of his condition."

                        Customer Reviews:

                        5 out of 5 stars Inside Out.......2000-06-20

In terms of finding a wild, uninhibited introduction to the radical and mindspinning worlds of Breton and friends I can assure you that this is a challenging but rewarding read. However, take note that those who feel prose must have structure and communicate linear thought, please leave your textbook at the door. This is work that burrows deep into the subconcious and festers like a tick.

This is a perfect read for those middle grade elementary school students. It has a just-right balance of text, information about ML King and illustrations.

An excellent short introduction to the civil rights movement. How clever of the author to highlight the role that children (grade school through college)played in the movement. Now wonder it held my (white) eight year old son's attention. This author wisely understands that kids want to read about what other kids are doing.

Martin Luther King Made the Black and white people be together and I wish I was there to help Martin Luther King. I wish I could of met him. When I was reading this , it felt like if I was there and seeing white people hurting black people's feelings. If I was one of the black people hearing the insults I would try to change it like Martin Luther King. I would recommend this book to all people so they could learn about his changes.

If you lived at the time of Martin Luther King J r.
                        By Ellen Levine

The Book is about when it was the 1950's to 1960's. A man named Martin Luther King Jr. was the leader for the blacks. White people were very mean to African-Americans. They had to use different schools, phone booths, neighborhoods, bathrooms, restaurants, hotels, and drinking fountains.

I like this book because I wonder about if I were there, would I have tried to help the black people? I know I would have.

I also think the illustrator did a great job on coloring the pages. I think the author wrote this book because it was about segregated laws. She wanted kids to know a famous leader or what it was like if the kids were there with him.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction to Civil Rights for Elementary ages!.......2001-01-25

Whenever teachers in our predominantly white elementary school ask me to recommend a title pertaining to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., or to African American history, this is one of the first books I suggest for grades 4, 5 and 6.The question and answer format lends itself to reading aloud and then discussing topics that come up, like segregation, white supremacy, the Montgomery bus boycott, etc. I recently read part of this book to a fourth grade class who just had "segregation" as a vocabulary word. The students were quite attentive and asked some excellent questions. The title is a bit misleading in that some might view it as a biography of Dr. King. While many sections do draw upon personal events in Dr. King's life, such as when he was a youngster riding in the car with his father and he heard a police officer call his dad "boy." Or again, when he was young and he was told he could no longer play with his white friends. But as the title says, it's really about if you lived at the "time" of Dr. King. Therefore, it's an excellent introduction to many aspects of the Civil Rights movement. While the watercolor illustrations are an improvement over the black and white drawings in earlier editions of this "If You Lived At the Time Of" series, in this case I think the text could be more fully enhanced with actual photographs, especially since many of these illustrations are copied from well-known photographs. All in all, this is an excellent introduction to the Civil Rights Movement for upper-elementary students (and apparently for middle-school students according to another review here). This is one title that, in my opinion, should be in every elementary school in the nation. Recommended.

Being a student of the War of 1812 and of the Battle of New Orelans in particular I eagerly awaited the delivery of this book. The book has four main parts; firstly, the atlas; second, Gene Smith's introduction; third, the extensive appendices; fourth, the narrative or memoir.

The atlas (actually a series of maps in a seperate docket showing the contemporary battlefields and approaches used by the US and British forces)is worth the cost of the book alone. Coming as it does from Latour's hand, Jackson's principal military engineer, it is, put simply, priceless to the serious student. Not only does it help visualise the struggle but much can be deduced by a simple comparison of Latour's battlefield and environs maps with, say, John Peddie's equally contemporary print for the British forces. Also the maps illustrate a host of detail not covered in the general histories (i.e. the correct anchorages and approach points for the British fleet - these I checked with the original ship logs that survive in England).

Mr Smith gives a very interesting introduction. His detail of Latour's life before, during and after the Battle is informative and really helps underpin the memoir by putting it in its proper place (i.e. he highlights the 'blurring' around Latour's actual location on the 8th January itself - was he with Jackson or Morgan? If so did he actually see the battle?) As good as the introduction is, however, I must point out that it is imperfect. The Commander of the British forces was EDWARD and not EDWIN Pakenham and I wish he had said more about Latours relationship with the Jean Lafitte and why Latour latter became an agent for Spain.

The appendix table is extensive and full of that incidental detail that brings history to life. It gives an added dimension to the memoir. Most students will be familar with the key documents repeated here but hidden in the despatches, letters and orders are nuggets of pure gold (i.e. the exchange of letters between opposing commanders - many not always in the official archives). Some of the items appear direct transpositions from already published sources particularly on the British side (i.e. from the London Gazette). This is unfortunate as Lambert's despatch of the battle was censored and an important paragraph excluded which, is turn, is likewise excluded from the tables.

Turning to the narrative itself it is surprisingly short. Of some 400 pages Latours memoir accounts for only 160 pages plus some notes. Of these not all are of real use to the student (i.e. Latour's preface and the war's origins I found superficial and vague). However, Latour more than makes up for this in his specialist areas such as his description of New Orleans and its defences and his descriptions of the Battles of Lake Borgne and New Orleans (not to be read without the appropriate maps) are vivid and substantial. Latour obviously conducted a lot of far ranging research (i.e. with bearly concealed contempt he provides tantalizing details of the fishing village and inhabitants and a number of Pensacola inhabitants who helped the British in their approach. He lists names and places and these too are borne out by the surving records (i.e. Guillemard p.71 received a large some of money from General Keane for his services).

All in all I found Latour's memoir to be an excellent and rewarding read. However, to get the maximum benefit from this book it is suggested that it is read in conjunction with a more modern work on the subject perhaps Frank Oswley's 'Struggle for the Gulf Borderlands' or Robin Reilly's 'The British at the Gates'.

Given the Democratic Party's fundamental role in shaping the United States, a history of the Democrats, "the world's oldest existing party," demands a virtual history of American government. In Jules Witcover's massive Party of the People: A History of the Democrats he attempts to capture the party's long evolution in a single volume. Though Witcover is sometimes burdened by the need to condense complex political events into textbook summaries, the book is authoritative and often useful as a first resource for political history.

From the start, Witcover draws from "the two disciplines of contemplative history and contemporary or `instant' history" to varying degrees of success. Party of the People is best when "instant" history holds sway, most notably in discussions of the Clinton and Gore presidential runs, where Witcover includes snippets of controversial speeches and press conferences. Earlier chapters, however, neglect primary source material under the pressure to summarize. Witcover's coverage of Andrew Jackson, for example, lacks direct citations that would bolster "Old Hickory's" reputation as a charismatic figure. While comprehensive at the federal executive level, the book is uneven in its treatment of the other levels and branches of government. Also, Witcover tends to underplay the role of slavery in the early history of the Democrats, especially in his explanations of Jefferson's "agrarian" virtue.

The book ends just as President George W. Bush has launched the war in Iraq and the Democratic candidates are lining up for the 2004 election. Looking ahead, Witcover sees the Democratic Party in a period of "identity crisis and dilemma." But, despite the contentious atmosphere between the liberal Campaign for America's Future and the centrist Democratic Leadership Council, he finds a common thread that connects modern Democrats to their founder, Thomas Jefferson: the "commitment to social and economic justice." While not perfect, Party of the People's treatment of the Democratic Party's quest for justice offers a valuable reference for students and educators. --Patrick O'Kelley

                            Book Description

After more than two centuries of sometimes stormy, always intriguing history, the Democratic Party of the United States survives as the oldest political organization in the world. In Party of the People, veteran political chronicler Jules Witcover traces the Democratic Party’s evolution, from its roots in the agrarian, individualistic concepts of Thomas Jefferson to its emergence as today’s progressive party of social change and economic justice. Witcover describes the Democrats' dramatic struggle to deÞne themselves and shares with us half a century of personal observation of the party through its most turbulent times.

First called, oddly enough, the Republican Party but later known as the Democratic-Republican Party and eventually the Democratic Party, this creature of Jefferson and James Madison evolved from an early ideological and personal struggle with the commerce-minded Alexander Hamilton. Seasoned by the populism of Andrew Jackson, the party was nearly undone by the “peculiar institution” of slavery in the South, which led to the birth of the rival Republican Party and to the Civil War. Half a century later, America emerged from World War I under Democrat Woodrow Wilson as a reluctant international player, and from World War II under Franklin Roosevelt as a liberal bastion and global superpower.
In the civil rights revolution, the party shed much of its racist past, but subsequent white middle-class resentments and the divisive Vietnam War opened the door to a rival conservatism that effectively demon-ized Democratic liberalism. Defensively, the party under Bill Clinton sought safer centrist ground and seemed on the brink of establishing a “third way," until the disastrous 2000 electoral college defeat of Al Gore left the Democrats shaken and splintered. As the new century emerges, they are debating whether to return to their liberal roots, setting themselves clearly apart from the Republicans, or press on with the centrist pursuit of a broader, less liberal constituency.

In Party of the People (a perfect companion to Grand Old Party by Lewis L. Gould, a history of the Republicans published simultaneously by Random House), Jules Witcover offers a rich and comprehensive popular history of the ideas, struggles, and key Þgures that have deÞned the Democratic Party over the past two hundred years and are now

I'm just one chapter into the book thusfar, but already I am irritated. If you want a surface level, what everyone thinks they know, knowledge of the Democratic Party, pick up this book.

As it has been mentioned, Witcover is not a historian, he is a political journalist. As such, his experience of putting his perspective in the best possible light is blindingly evident just from the treatment of Hamilton, Washington, Jefferson, and Madison. There is not one single instance of differing interpretations of the events, which are numerous.

Histories are allowed to contain bias, and personal opinion is inevitable, but to place opinions and skewed interpretations on level with fact is irresponsible, and frankly, not history.

If you are wanting to learn more about Americal political history, do yourself a favor and consult other sources (such as Origins of American Political Thought by John P. Roche; The Era of Good Feelings by George Dangerfield; The Jacksonian Era by Glyndon Van Deusen; The Impending Crisis by David M. Potter; etc.) If you want to learn what a biased 8th grade history book would tell you, get Part of the People.

I will post my full rating when I have completed this book.

Jules Witcover's _Party of the People_ traces the Democratic Party from its Jeffersonian roots, through the tumultuous Civil War period and into the modern party dominated by the four terms of Franklin Roosevelt. Witcover's well-researched tome, the companion to _Grand Old Party_, the Republican history volume, sheds light on the previously forgotten likes of Benjamin Harrison, James K. Polk, John Tyler and the notorious James Buchanan in short, 20-page chapters that take history one term at a time.

The 730+ page length of this book makes it forbidding for some casual readers, and in some parts the text is dry and overly academic, but the vasty majority of Witcover's work in _Party of the People_ is a commendable history of America's oldest political party.

                            4 out of 5 stars I Enjoyed It - But A Disclaimer Or Two..........2005-02-13

I enjoy Jules Witcover's books. In fact, I recommend "Marathon" to anybody who enjoys reading about campaigns. But Witcover is promulgating a mainline Democratic lie - that Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson qualify as "Democratic Presidents." This is historical revisionism of the worst sort. Jefferson was a libertarian who believed in small government and would roll over in his grave at the notion of federally funded Social Security and Medicare or income taxes through the roof. Jackson changed the party name, but the change in emphasis came under Woodrow Wilson and Grover Cleveland.

And it's difficult for me to believe some things Witcover says because he flat out changes what happened during my lifetime. Jules charges that the reason Clinton didn't pass his 'middle class tax cut' he promised in 1992 was because 'the Republicans wouldn't support him.' But Clinton made it clear that he didn't want Republican support - and scrapped his tax cut promise less than a week after being elected in favor of higher taxes that passed by one Democratic vote in each house. Yet Witcover blames the minority party for this. How am I to take anything prior to my own interest in politics seriously with such a blatant error in logic?

Witcover redeems himself, however, by talking about the split that developed in the party over Civil Rights in 1948. The party has never really recovered from the aftermath of that period of time, losing nine of the last 14 elections - and nearly losing two more (JFK and Carter) in the electoral college.

A good read - but do some other research if you're preparing a thesis.

5 out of 5 stars A Landmark in Political History.......2004-12-30

The reviews by Tom Daschle and Richard Gephardt on the back of the book say it all; this history of the Democrats follows the party since its birth in the late 18th century until today. The author goes into detail about each election, each democratic convention, the opposing viewpoints within the party and all the turmoil in between. I have learned more from this book than any other I can recall reading, plus it is exciting enough to make you want to pick it up and read all 700 plus pages. Witcover has a certain way of bringing the past to life, that will make this an amazing read for anyone interested in American or political history.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2004-12-24

To begin with, Witcover is not a professional historian, but rather a veteran journalist who has covered Democratic politics for many decades. His insights are valuable in terms of the more recent history of the party. He still provides a pretty good overall history of the early Democratic Party as well, though I would have liked a little more information on the Jacksonian Era and other periods in the party's history. Most of his sources for this book are secondary ones, which are valuable, but others including some primary ones would have been useful too.

I'm always a little skeptical of including Jefferson among the early founders of the Democratic Party. Our earliest presidents, while certainly grouped into different factions, did not resemble our modern concept of political parties. Nevertheless it was an important period in the early formation of the inevitable party system that would develop over time.

While Witcover probably is a Democrat, though I don't think he stated it, he does a fairly good job of detailing the party's successes and failures. He is quite skilled in describing the differences and controversies within the party itself, especially over the issue of segregation which Southern Democrats were adament about. He certainly demonstrated his criticisms of party leaders as well, including Bill Clinton's personal failings.

In the writing of history, objectivity should be the goal of every historian, but we must also acknowledge that everybody brings a certain amount of bias into their work. Objectivity is especially hard in politics since most of us declare a preference, as I do and I'm a Democrat.

This book is mainly a study of Democratic presidents, and that can be subject to fair criticism since the party permeates all branches and levels of government. But the president is the symbolic head of the party and discussing the history of the party in all branches of government at great detail and at the state and local level would require more than a one volume book. Bottom line there are many other great books on the party if this one doesn't satisfy you.

I think Witcover is to be commended for providing a solid one volume book on the history of a party that is not always known for its cohesiveness. Witcover appropriately uses that famous quote by Will Rogers in the beginning of the book. He ends by saying that while the party has had to confront intraparty squabbling, and it looks like that will continue for quite some time, they at least share a common belief in economic and social justice and still are the party of the common man, though I think they have a lot of work to do to get back to that image.

Why the Democrats are Blue argues that secular, educated elites, using a commission created at the 1968 convention in Chicago and later chaired by Senator George McGovern, took the Democratic Party away from working class and religious Democrats. This quiet revolution helps explain why six of the last nine Democratic presidential candidates have lost.

                                  Book Description

The oceans, and the challenges they face, are so vast that it’s easy to feel powerless to protect them. 50 Ways to Save the Ocean, written by veteran environmental journalist David Helvarg, focuses on practical, easily-implemented actions everyone can take to protect and conserve this vital resource. Well-researched, personal, and sometimes whimsical, the book addresses daily choices that affect the ocean's health: what fish should and should not be eaten; how and where to vacation; storm drains and driveway run-off; protecting local water tables; proper diving, surfing, and tide pool etiquette; and supporting local marine education. Helvarg also looks at what can be done to stir the waters of seemingly daunting issues such as toxic pollutant runoff; protecting wetlands and sanctuaries; keeping oil rigs off shore; saving reef environments; and replenishing fish reserves.

4 out of 5 stars Many ideas for protecting the world's oceans and the creatures therein..........2007-10-15

I picked up a copy of this book at the 2007 Hawai'i Conservation Conference, where author David Helvarg was a keynote speaker. Helvarg is president of the Blue Frontier Campaign, an ocean advocacy group.

50 Ways to Save the Ocean is a book with a mission. That mission is to convince the reader that:

                                  1. The oceans are in trouble and need your help.

                                  2. There are things each person can do to assist in the conservation of our oceanic resources, even if you live in Kansas.

Most of the ideas are good, and I appreciate that Helvarg went beyond the "donate money to..." strategies that most Americans get in their weekly mail solicitations (although he encourages you to donate money to a variety of causes and organizations). He promotes activism: volunteering, writing, and lobbying. He notes the power of consumerism in affecting how the ocean's resources are exploited ("follow the money").

I found that I do about 3/4 of the actions he recommends. The question is, how does this information get into the hands of those who are not already involved in ocean protection issues?

I just spent 2 weeks with my Canadian nephews who are 8, 11, and 13 years old. Most of our evenings were spent in an endless Spongebob Marathon - Right after they left and went home, I came across this book and thought it would be a great companion reference for any Spongebob fans. Little did I know that Sponges are being overharvested and take many years to grow. Well, I'm sending my nephews a copy of this book so they can get a reality check on what's really going on in Bikini Bottom - and perhaps they could find their own everyday ways to participate in the healing of the ocean. -This is a Great Reference book for parents and kids.

This is an excellent book to help teach your family about caring for our oceans! The ideas and illustrations are fantastic to read with kids. Almost all of the suggestions can be accomplished as a family, too. Going to the beach, going on a whale-watching trip, visiting tide pools, eating healthy and sustainable seafood, etc., are all great family activities! This book makes it easy to get your whole family together and interested in saving our oceans. Also really helpful in giving extra meaning to family activities, as everything can be prefaced with an interesting suggestion from this book. It will certainly also improve your kids' self-esteem, knowing they are helping the environment. On top of that, it is a great read!
