5 out of 5 stars New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania's natural beauty........1998-07-16

The Smithsonian Natural Guides are my new bible for travel. Who really cares about all those motel & restaurant guides w/cheesy attractions anyhow? These guides bring to life what kind of America lies behind (and often even above) the tourist traps.

In the guide to New York, New Jersey & Pennsylvania's natural places, Eugene Walter takes the reader to the Adirondacks, the Finger Lakes, the Valley & Ridge Province, the Pine Barrens and other lesser known reserves in an often poetical manner, making it for once a travel guide that's a page-turner! His descriptions of certain places follow streams down their courses, allowing full visualization as well as a desire to get in the car and go there!

Victor Chan has covered 42,000 kilometers in Tibet by foot, truck, bus, horse, yak, and coracle. His book includes an introductory course to spoken Tibetan, essays on Tibetan Buddhism and concepts of pilgrimage and art, and practical travel information, plus itineraries to such destinations as the 7th-century burial grounds in the Valley of the Kings at Chougye and the long-lost 11th century Xixiar Pala murals at Dranang. This is the most authorative sourcebook on one of the world's most remote and fascinating destinations.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......1999-12-05

excellent, lovingly written book on Tibet. Full of maps and descriptions to pour over. Although clearly written with a pilgrim reader in mind, this actually helps since Tibet is quite a incredibly religious nation. I could wish for some photographs to back up the lovely descriptions, but nonthaless an excellent introduction to the culture of Tibet and a wonderful read.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2005-03-25

This book was a delight to read and the color pictures
were great to look at.I did see the movie and the book juste
gave me a inside on Anne Hateway, and all of the fellow writters,
producer on what the were hopping to get and did.
After all it's a enchanted story.

1 out of 5 stars Yuck!!.......2004-10-01

This Book is soooo Lame. I can't believe someone even bothered to publish it. It's ten times worse than the movie, and the movie's pretty bad. It's like they took every stupid idea that had too do with Ella Enchanted and put it in this book. Reading it was just a major waste of my time.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect companion to the movie,.......2004-04-24

My daughter and I enjoyed "Ella Enchanted" starring Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy so we knew we just had to get this book when it came out.

The book has lots of color pictures, behind-the-scenes info and even interviews with the main stars. Any fan of Anne Hathaway or Hugh Dancy will definitely want to get it. It is the perfect companion to the fun, romantic and sweet film. Four thumbs up from me and my daughter!

1 out of 5 stars UGH.......2004-04-20

My little sister bought this, and all I have to say is that the people who wrote the story clearly did not read the book at all. The story was absolutely massacred. The scrapbook was worthless too. Do not waste your money on this peice of crap.

5 out of 5 stars Ella Enchanted.......2004-04-13

I loved 'Ella Enchanted' and when the scrapbook came out, I had to get it!!!! I got it and read it, and I fell head over heels for 'Ella'. This book and scrapbook are both at #1 on my fav books list. I also got the soundtrack, and that is now my fav CD. I saw the movie too and they picked such a hottie for Prince Char[Hugh Dancy]. Am I right girls!? What drawed me to read 'Ella' was the fact that she had so much girl power, not something you see that much in the midieval stories of late, like 'Sleeping Beauty' and Disney's 'Cinderella'. This story is great and Levine is a genius (...). This book and scrapbook, movie and CD are must reads, must sees, and must listen to's. People are weird thinking to boy-cott the movie just because it's not the same as the book, I think it'll cause more 'Ella' books to be sold. That's a good thing. I also found really cool continued 'Ella' stories on www.geocities.com/eethesite.

4 out of 5 stars OK, but repetitive.......2001-04-30

This book provides a readable, and reasonably good, overview of fetal development, with a scientific perspective. The downside is that I found the second half to be quite repetitive, and the author harps on, pushing his research agenda.

5 out of 5 stars Provides wonderful insights into human development.......1999-02-20

Nathanielsz presents information regarding our understanding of fetal development in a way we all can relate to. I recommend this book, as well as his latest title (Life in the Womb), to all those interested in what happens during the first nine months of life.

The endless monotony and idiot bosses drive anybody with an IQ above their shoe size to do something to kill the thought that, if they're lucky, they only have 30 more years of mind numbing drudgery to go before they can retire. I'm not saying alcohol abuse is the proper outlet, but it does seem to be the most common and most convenient. Good book, excellent portrayal of what exactly "blue collar America" does for a living.

5 out of 5 stars riveting tale from the assembly line.........2007-07-06

Ben Hamper shares his life as a worker on the GM assembly line in Flint, MI. Bold, frank, honest and often hilarious. This book was recommended to me years ago and for some reason I never read it until now. Hamper chronicles a part of American history (manufacturing jobs) that seem to be going stateside or as Ross Perot once described in a quip about NAFTA, what's that whoosing noise? manufacturing jobs headed to Mexico. This is prose for the ages. Loved the book.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious story of a dying breed.......2007-04-18

I grew up with people like Ben Hamper in a place which was much like Flint. For the first couple years of my adult life, I did the kind of work he did. What he describes is the tail end of a lifestyle; the lifestyle of the shop rat. It's dirty, monotonous and smelly. Many of the people you work with are either below average in intelligence or in sanity. Drugs, booze and having no concept of "forethought" are fundamental parts of the culture. It's nihilism with a rivet gun. If you come from a place like that, chances are, your only way out is via a jail cell or a career in the military. Or, you could win a workmans comp suit. Which is presumably how Ben got out.

I miss rust-belt working class america. It's a hard life, and it doesn't have much in the way of rewards, but the people who make it up are genuine in ways that others are not: they have a lot of heart and spirit. Ben's book brought it all back in a great galloping rush of memories. If you've ever wondered what the factory working classes are, or at least were like (back when we had factories); read the book.

3 out of 5 stars I have my own tales from an Assembly Line.......2007-03-29

I didn't really like reading this book because I too work in a (once) major three Auto plant. I didn't feel that it properly portrayed some of the workers. It made it sound like all workers are like the author where they just really don't give a damn about anything except having a joking time on the job. It also made the workers sound like they were underachieving, undereducated, bottom of the barrel workers and I didn't care to have that stigma for all of us. I hold two bachelor degrees, like my job and take it serious!

2 out of 5 stars Now I know why GOOD BOOKS DON'T PUT UP WITH writin' and drinkin' .......2007-01-05

It's just hard to read, after a while. I never grow to like the guy at all, he's appears to be a total loser while WRITING LIKE A TEENAGER IN A CHAT ROOM. THEY DID NOT MAKE THE CAPS LOCK FOR THIS REASON. And it's okay to quote somebody talkin' but throughout the whole book, writin' and talkin' and movin' and drinkin'. Sounds like a petty thing but after seventy pages it gets very old. Basically the same thing as people who either didn't have the opportunity to have a basic education or didn't bother to apply the one they had.

The book, or as far as I got in it was interesting, but I just couldn't put up with the sheer lack of professionalism which, by his story isn't surprising and I'm not trying to say this in a way to slam the guy, it just is what it is. A depressing story which had potential but I think he was probably too stubborn to listen to somebody (assuming someone brought it up) in regards to the ALL CAPS and writin'. If it is a downer of a story so be it but I have hundreds of books to read and am not going to finish one that is so badly written. And for me to say that a book is badly written... hoo boy it must be.

It was interesting to hear about how the GM plant worked, and how the workers would slack off and so on and I actually wanted to get through the book. This probably makes me a bit of a snob but if someone isn't going to write with basic english skills which he definitely must have, yet chooses to get ALL CAPS all of the time I have many other books which were written with basic respect for the reader and the language. Never thought I would get mad about something like this either. Just kind of slap in the face to think a reader would appreciate TYPIN' LIKE THIS IN A BOOK SOMEBODY PAID TWENTY DOLLARS FOR.

Could have been better, I wish I hadn't bought it though. I wanted to like it more.

                                      Book Description

Operating from a clandestine camp on an island off western North Korea, Army Lt. Ben Malcom coordinated the intelligence activities of eleven partisan battalions, including the famous White Tigers. With Malcom’s experiences as its focus, White Tigers examines all aspects of guerrilla activities in Korea. This exciting memoir makes an important contribution to the history of special operations.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A story long un-told.......2006-03-05

In the world of foreign military advisors, Ben Malcom's name is not a household word in comparison to Joe Stilwell, John Glubb, Edward Lansdale, and, of course, T E Lawrence. His short memoir of life with North Korean guerrillas during the Korean War deserves to be read along with those of his more famous colleages.

Ben Malcom was trained as a traditional military officer, but was thrust into a highly unusual role as an advisor to a small group of North Korean guerrillas fighting against the North Korean government. Until the 1990s, the missions the so-called White Tigers undertook were still classified. While their contribution to the overall war effort can be disputed, Malcom's lessons cannot be ignored for what they teach us about the US Army and its abiding discomfort with non-traditional warfare.

Malcom demonstrates convincingly that the US Army forgot many of the lessons derived from working with partisan forces from Burma to Greece to France during the Second World War. Those lessons would have proved invaluable to young Lieutenant Malcom as he took on a role he was not trained for, but for which he demonstrated great aptitude. His book takes us from his ROTC days, to instructor at Fort Knox, through his time in Korea, and finally to Vietnam, where he experienced a nasty case of de ja vue. His memoir is short, but exciting and written with great verve.

Much has been written about the current conflict in Iraq and how the the US military is adapting to re-learn the lessons it forgot after Vietnam about insurgency, counter-insurgency, and partisan warfare. Many authors have applauded the adaptability of the US military; Malcom's book is a cautionary tale that shows we have been down this path before and failed to institutionalize the lessons of previous conflict. For that alone, his memoir is worth the price.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book -- 40+Years in Coming.......1999-06-14

(Note: Part of the details furnished here are based on my discussions with the author shortly after White Tigers was originally released)

First, I'll have to say I'm a bit prejudiced toward Ben Malcom. COL Ben Malcom was the post commander at Fort McPherson, Georgia in the late 70's and I commanded his military police company. In fact, Ben was instrumental in my career -- first he allowed me to command a company as a first lieutenant, something his predecessor would not do. Second, he literally pushed my application for a regular army commission through and made sure it was approved. Ben is a true gentleman and was a fine Army officer.

On to the book. White Tigers recounts Ben's story, from ROTC to the Infantry, and shortly after his commission, to Korea. Ben was scheduled to be a rifle platoon leader in Korea, but was somewhat randomly selected to train North Korean partisans --- behind enemy lines. What was so remarkable about Ben's selection is that he is over 6', has no oriental features, and did not speak Korean.

Ben found himself behind enemy lines where he trained a battalion-size North Korean force, and managed to get to the mainland on more than one occasion to recruit and do combat -- where he was awarded the Silver Star.

My favorite portion of the book is Ben recounting how he left Korea after a year wearing the Silver Star, but no combat patch (his unit did not have patch) and no combat infantryman's badge (his unit was not recognized as a line infantry unit that qualified for the CIB). When Ben reported in to his next unit, his superiors asked how it was that he was wearing a silver star, but no combat patch or CIB. Ben's answer: "I'm sorry, I can't disclose that because it's classified."

And Ben's operations were classified -- in fact, for more than 40 years. Ben had started a book in the mid-50s, but terminated his efforts because of the classification of the operations in which he was involved. Once the operations were declassified in the early 90s, Ben dusted off his 40-year old manuscript, which served as the basis for White Tigers.

I will have to say that White Tigers is not an accomplished thriller -- however, what it is is a fine personal account of Ben's exploits in a very unusual operation. Many of the activities that Ben was involved in -- and many that he directed ad lib due to the lack of training and doctrine --have become the basis of some special operations today.

Ben deserves a huge well done for an outstanding effort in documenting a very unusual experience. I would highly recommend his work.

3 out of 5 stars Cloak and dagger in the Korean conflict.......1997-10-16

This is an interesting addition to the military history collection. The book is an account of indigent intelligence gathering and sabotage operations behind the lines in North Korea. A few U.S. Army Officers and Enlisted men were tabbed as advisors to assist North Korean nationals in the disruption of the Communist forces north of the DMZ. For the most part well written, the narrative is most worthy by demonstrating the reluctance, if not downright obstructionism shown by senior Army members toward unconventional warfare in this period. The young officers selected for the mission generally had little if any training or background for the job and were given minimal support. A good accounting of the initiative and ingenuity of our young college grads when thrown in a difficult position.

With the disintegration of state socialism came the re-emergence of aggressive nationalism and racism. The lid of repression lifted, the desires that emerged have been far from democratic. To explain this apparent paradox, socialist critical thought must turn to psychoanalysis says Slavoj Zizek. For they know not what they do seeks to understand the status of enjoyment within ideological discourse, from Hegel through Lacan to these political and ideological deadlocks. The author's own enjoyment of popular culture makes this an engaging and lucid exposition.

                                            Book Description

Most scientists and researchers working in tropical areas are convinced that parks and protected areas are the only real hope for saving land and biodiversity in those regions. Rather than giving up on parks that are foundering, ways must be found to strengthen them, and Making Parks Work offers a vital contribution to that effort. Focusing on the "good news" - success stories from the front lines and what lessons can be taken from those stories - the book gathers experiences and information from thirty leading conservationists into a guidebook of principles for effective management of protected areas.
