Book Description

"Literature and butterflies are the two sweetest passions known to man."

-Vladimir Nabokov The passion for butterflies-evident in today's explosion of butterfly imagery in fashion, jewelry, and the decorative arts-has inspired humankind throughout history. All over the world, the butterfly has been a source of wonder and a metaphor for spiritual beliefs. In this unique book, Maraleen Manos-Jones combines myth, legend, poetry, and art to explore the myriad ways in which humans have perceived this captivating creature. Butterfly goddesses have reigned in cultures as diverse as Minoan Crete and Toltec Mexico. Butterflies have appeared in the poetry of Blake and Neruda, in paintings by Bruegel, Picasso, and Warhol, and in the dances of Native Americans, Africans, and the Japanese, among others. Many have adopted the butterfly as a personal symbol, including the Emperor Augustus. With images ranging from ancient stone carvings to modern furniture, body tattoos, jeweled combs, and haute couture, this enchanting gift book-the result of nearly three decades of research-celebrates the power of one of nature's most delicate beings. MARALEEN MANOS-JONES has been involved with butterflies for nearly 30 years. She has created butterfly dances, owned a butterfly gallery, lectured on butterflies, and collected butterfly stories and art. She lives in a house surrounded by her butterfly garden in Brooklyn, New York. 175 illustrations, 150 in full color, 9 x 11"

5 out of 5 stars Great - Captures collective consciousness.......2006-04-17

Every culture known to man throughout the rise and fall of civilizations, has carried a myth or symbol about the butterfly. Evidence of this includes the myth of Eros and Psyche, ancient Mycenean gold relics, wall ornaments of Teotihuacan in Mexico, the Japanese paintings, the Native American legend. This book captures the collective ethos of this powerful universal symbol well. It is well-illustrated.

So, what does all of this mean? Why is it such a recurring and powerful symbol in the collective psyche?

The spirit of the butterfly is the transformative symbol of the regeneration of love which can fly. Love gives you the wings to fly, to be free. This notion of the beauty of love with its gossamer wings, is something that is more precious than anything, for it allows one's heart to open within it where the seed may be born to flower. This flower may blossom fully into joy beyond one's own conscious power to imagine. The seed that may open up and spring up within one's heart can be a form of transformation that does last forever. This is a form of one's own opening to a current within one's own being, a current that can magnetize others when it is fully open. That power to magnetize is something that we are all born with, but that few seldom realize because they are not open to their own feeling in their heart of being free and at one with others.

That is what this book is about and why it is meaningful in capturing the essence of a universal symbol.

5 out of 5 stars You'll Be Happily Surprised-- and Entranced.......2000-10-28

This book succeeds both as a tremendous joy for the general reader and a serious treatment of its subject. It is perhaps the best, maybe the only, book on the market right now treating its subject well and completely. Exceeding the breadth of its title, the book actually treats the cultural significance of butterflies throughout history. This is no small feat. Butterflies have been taken by many cultures to inculcate hope, rebirth, transformation and transcendence, matters at the heart of mankind's internal concern for many millennia. Despite its masterful photography and copious illustrations, Ms. Manos-Jones's production immediately belies any notion that it is simply a "coffee table book". The chapter titles well illustrate the book's topical landscape-- for example "The Sacred Butterfly", "The Artful Butterfly", "The Verbal Butterfly", [famous] "Butterfly People", and so on. By the time you've gotten through each of the ten chapters, be you butterfly buff or butterfly scholar, you will probably be surprised that, concerning this topic, you "didn't know the half of it". It is important to point out that Ms. Manos-Jones brings to this book a well-informed knowledge both of butterflies and world environmental issues. In life, she wears another hat-- as an environmentalist associated with the important Michoacan Reforestation Fund-- a premier conservation group working to protect Monarch butterfly overwintering habitats in Mexico. Given these credentials, the book is a really wedding of Ms. Manos-Jones' professional level expertise on conservation and the pure love of her subject-- butterflies. This book can be recommended wholeheartedly to the general reader and the informed butterfly enthusiast alike. I imagine that a few scholars and historians will want to dig into it as well.

      Book Description

Award-winning photographer Nancy Ellison offers an intimate glimpse of America's most fabled vacation island-Martha's Vineyard. Her romantic photographs capture landmarks such as the beautifully colored Gay Head Cliffs, the bustling farmers' market, weathered clapboard houses, haunting sunsets, and picturesque lighthouses. Ellison also explores unexpected views of the changing landscape that have often been overlooked.

Accompanying the photographs is text by Cape Cod resident and renowned travel writer Paul Theroux. His evocative essay reflects on the changing moods of the Vineyard. Diverse Island personalities including year round residents such as the shipbuilders and lobster men as well as celebrities Art Buchwald, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Walter Cronkite, Carly Simon, Bill Styron, Mike Wallace, and others come together in Vineyard Days, Vineyard Nights. There has not been a Vineyard book in many years. And now, Ellison's collection of photographs fills that gap and makes the perfect souvenir of the Island. The book is not only a wonderful treasure for visitors but is an intimate portrait of the Vineyard that residents will recognize and embrace as their own.

      5 out of 5 stars WELL DONE!!.......2005-07-07

I am a resident of Martha's Vineyard and I find Nancy Ellison's book the best photography book ever done on the island. She treats her subject matter, be it people or landscape, with great integrity and respect. Her composition shows a wonderful artistic talent and her use of matted paper gives the reader a sense of paintings not photographs. It is a book no lover of the Vineyard can be without.

      1 out of 5 stars REALLY BAD.......2005-06-14

I live on Martha's Vineyard and I have seen many books of photographs of the island. This book is just not very good. The matte pages are an unnecessary affectation and they tend to make the photos look like old postcards. The author drops names of boats and celebrities, but some of the pictures are blurred or show their subjects from the back. Surely these folks didn't pose for these obviously quick fan snaps. Not the quality one would hope for from a professional photographer. Oh, by the way, the romance of this book also escapes me. Please think twice before spending so much money on such a slapdash enterprise.

I am puzzled as to why another reader of this book rated it so badly. I find the text a little heavy to grasp at first but this book belongs to a series of up to date texts bringing to the attention of the reader important discoveries and concepts in this field. I think to rate the book you must consider the fact that it is one collection in a series of collections of papers on virology that are detailed and for a scientific audience. Personally, I found the books an excellent reference.

            Book Description

This monograph is the first book in the study of necessary conditions of an extremum in which topological connectedness plays a major role. Many new and original results are presented here. The synthesis of the well-known Dybrovitskii-Milyutin approach, based on functional analysis, and topological methods permits the derivation of the so-called alternative conditions of an extremum: if the Euler equation has the trivial solution only at an extreme point, then some inclusion is valid for the functionals belonging to the dual space. Also, the present approach gives a transparent answer to the question why the Kuhn-Tucker theorem establishes the restrictions on the signs of the Lagrange multipliers for the inequality constraints but why this theorem does not establish any analogous restrictions on the multipliers for the equality constraints.
Examples from mathematical economics illustrate the alternative conditions of any extremum. Parallels are drawn between these examples and the problems of static equilibrium in classical mechanics.
Audience: This volume will be of use to mathematicians and graduate students interested in the areas of optimization, optimal control and mathematical economics.

Among the subjects discussed are reincarnation in Oriental, Greek, and American Indian systems of thought; the theory as set forth in the Old and New Testaments and interpreted by early Christian Fathers; the rebirth of animals, plants, and minerals; the idea of soul-mates; the memory of past lives; and the fate of the suicide. An extensive bibliography is included.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars A Comprehensive Approach.......2003-04-02

There is, perhaps, no authority on the subject of reincarnation with the exception of certain sacred texts, however, Manly Hall comes very close as that scholarly voice. "Reincarnation: The Cycle of Necessity" was written in 1980 and the information is still completely relevant. What Hall continually impresses upon the readers mind is that the belief in reincarnation is the only reasonable solution towards a better life and world.

The book goes through most of the major beliefs of reincarnation throughout the worlds religions as well as cultures. Hall does some keen investigation to support that most of the religions do subscribe to reincarnation. In the case of Judaism and Christianity, he does dig a little deeper to give credence that they do support Christianity, however, this is from a theological perspective and not a doctrinal one. Hall does note that, although the general public of the Western mind does not adhere to the belief, there are no laws from the church stating it is a pagan belief either.

Once this matter is put aside, Hall ventures into various topics pertaining to reincarnation from suicide, karma, free will, animal, plant and mineral spirits, to the unfolding of the human life in perfection towards the spiritual goal of nirvana. Hall writes with utmost conidence and almost cocksureness of what he says to be actual fact. There are some testimonies in the book to help you conlude that reincarnation exists, a certain amount of restraint may be called upon the reader. Nonetheless, Hall is convincing, especially after he has explained the reasoning behind reincarnation and its purpose and the attitude of the individual.

Manly Hall's book on reincarnation is certainly a unique book and valid amongst the pantheon of books out there on the subject. Hall does his best not to have a particular point of view, however, for those that are familiar with him will know he was honored the highest degree in Freemasonry and that his specialty is in occultism.

I'm a divinity student at an Ivy League school. "Who's Who in the Bible" is AWESOME. The bios and content are presented in a flowing, story format. There are lots of pictures and visuals to picture the people and see how they have been portrayed in the art. There's also a comprehensive listing of all of the people in the Bible, which is really helpful.

This book is great for div students, but an excellent resource for churches, families, and others!

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference with Great Pictures.......2003-12-29

From Aaron to Zophar, "Who's Who in the Bible" is an excellent bible resource. It's encyclopedic entries are clear and to the point, without feeling dumbed down. The many illustrations - some of which are spectacular full-page, life-like paintings - really help to bring to characters to life and elevate this from being just dry text - even kids will enjoy this. All entries appear in bold throughout so you can easily cross-reference. In the back there is an alphabetical listing of everyone in the Old and New Testament as well as the Apocrypha; plus an index.

In all, an excellent job by Readers Digest. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Supplement with The Complete Guide to the Book of Proverbs........2000-01-18

Who's Who in the Bible is a great reference resource with lots of color illustrations and photos. The commentary shows how to pronounce the people's names and tells what their names meant. Related names are in bold for cross-referencing. Although written in 1994 it quotes the older Revised Standard Version (1952) instead of the New Revised Standard Version(1990). If you enjoy this book you may also like THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE BOOK OF PROVERBS by Cody Jones. Numerous biblical characters are pointed out who illustrate King Solomon's witty observations on human nature.

                                  Book Description

David Lyon's highly regarded Sailing Navy List detailed every Royal Navy warship of the age of sail by era, ship type and class. This book is the much-anticipated follow-up volume. It provides details of design and construction history, technical specifications, and fates for all warships of the important but poorly documented period between 1815 and 1889, which saw the introduction of steam power and the gradual replacement of sail. Extensively illustrated, the new work includes a representative collection of original plans from the little-seen collection at the British National Maritime Museum. In addition, appendixes cover captured, purchased and hired vessels, as well as Coast Guard and packet vessels for which the Royal Navy was responsible. Rif Winfield ably brought this volume to fruition after David Lyon's death in 2000 and their final collaboration is sure to be treasured by historians as well as modelers for its detailed data and diagrams. 200 plans and illustrations. Appendixes. 9 1/2 x 111/4 inches.

Arianna Huffington is a rare breed of political celebrity: an articulate pundit who left the intellectually safe world of criticizing elected officials to try her hand at actually becoming one. While her campaign for Governor of California in the highly unusual 2003 recall election was unsuccessful, the experience has brought valuable insight and perspective to Fanatics and Fools. Huffington, a former supporter of Newt Gingrich, has recently occupied a unique place in the political landscape as she moved away from the right, never quite arrived at the left and dwelled somewhere askew from what is thought of as the center. In this book, she grudgingly endorses the idea of voting with the Democrats in the 2004 presidential election despite grave misgivings about the Democratic Party, which she accuses of too often trying to be a watered-down of the Republicans. But even those Democrats, she feels, are infinitely preferable to the George W. Bush administration with its record of corporate favoritism and patterns of deception leading up to the invasion of Iraq. A section chronicling her experience in campaigning may not seem particularly relevant to people living outside California, but it's a pretty interesting passage. Few skilled opinion makers ever get out and run themselves (imagine George Will or David Broder giving stump speeches), and Huffington brings humor and humility to her account. Her characterization of Arnold Schwarzenegger includes stinging criticisms of his policies but conveys grudging admiration for the actor turned Governor. Her criticisms of Bush and the Republicans are impassioned; well supported, their sheer volume impedes her effort to create a unified message. Still, Huffington's wit and candor, coupled with her recently gained battleground experience, make Fanatics and Fools a terrific read. --John Moe

This is a book everyone from both political parties should read. She lays out exactly what is currently wrong with the state of American politics. Fantacis on the right, Fools on the left and America is suffering because of it. As someone who has been a member of both parties, was the keynote speaker at the republican convention (I believe it was in 93) and ran against Arnold in Claifonrnia Arianna is in a very unique postition to know what she is talking about. Highly reccomended.

3 out of 5 stars Good Points, but Too Much "Humor".......2006-07-11

Huffington sees three key issues facing the U.S.: 1)We've become two nations, separated by an ever-widening economic, health care, and education gulf, 2)the way money is corrupting our politics, and 3)the nation's failed $40 billion/year war on drugs.

The "fanatics" in this book are Bush and his fellow Republicans - they don't allow reason to interfere with beliefs, are unmindful of contradictions in the positions, and believe their cause has been blessed by God. She sees Bush Republicans' self-righteous prattle about the fiscal irresponsibility of eg. Greg Davis as laughable, considering what they do in Washington.

"Fanatics and Fools" then goes on to list innumerable absurdities by Bush and his administration, always sharpened with sarcasms that eventually become tiresome.

The "fools" in Huffington's opinion are Democrats, whom she calls "the pusillanimous opposition" (I had to look that one up). Her point is well taken, and she backs it up with Democratic leaders repeated fear of taking a strong position opposing Bush lest they be painted as anti-American.

The author suggests they begin by redefining the language of politics. "Responsibility" should also add social considerations to the R's focus on individual aspects, "family values" should include the strains caused by families needing to have two or more sources of income while still lacking health insurance., etc.

Recommendations for A Better America: 1)Energy Independence, Health Care for All (including preventive care), 2)Redeploy Drug War Monies to Protecting Inner-City Youth from Violence, 3)Secure the Homeland First, 4)Restore Integrity to the Political Process, and 5)Stop Outsourcing Jobs for Increased Corporate Profits.

Looking forward to her next book - hopefully a bit less "humor

Of all her books, this is ranked the highest. I love the fact that she pulls no punches to expose both political parties who've done nothing but to swindle the American people.

I hope that people like Micheal Moore and Anne Coulter would take off their blinders long enough to see the ills of the party they support.

1 out of 5 stars Argumentum ad Hominum.......2005-01-25

I find it interesting that in the pages I scanned through that I couldn't find a single fact. All I found was the fallacy of "Argumentum ad Hominum" (Argument against the Man i.e. "He's a schmuck therefore anything he says or does isn't valid") Now, granted, I didn't (couldn't) read the whole book so I don't know if she got into any actual facts that could be looked up and verified but just the fact that what I did read was so obviously skewed by emotion doesn't lend any credence with me of the facts. I am NOT a Republican but I do like my information to be clear, concise and to have the ability to be verified. I do not appreciate "scare" tactics or emotional string pulling. Let me decide what my emotions should be by giving me the FACTS!

4 out of 5 stars Much valid criticism but not enough game plan!.......2004-09-12

Arianna Huffington as always is informative and accurate in her scathing criticism of the Bush regime and the damage Bush and cronies are doing to the people of America and the world.... and anyone who does not yet intellectually and emotionally grasp the reality (indeed the horrors) existing under the rhetoric of our current government will benefit from reading this book. But having just previously read Senator Byrd's excellent LOSING AMERICA - which focused on the facts and Byrd's deeply felt and profound observations (in his case, of the power tactics, lack of conscience and integrity, and vicious partisanship he has witnessed among many of our Congresspersons) without ranting and name-calling, I found myself frustrated with Huntington.

Clearly the left needs its Huntington's and Franken's and Moore's - and I value all three of them. But Huntington is more likely to provide confirmation and an outlet for anger for those already strongly anti-Bush, while turning off the undecided with inflammatory language. Not all of us are empowered to political action by nonstop ranting. The realities speak for themselves. Let the reader learn of them, feel his or her own anger rather than react to the authors, and feel mobilized as a result to take action for new political alternatives. Too much ranting can leave one emotionally exhausted and depressed rather than empowered to help bring in a new government.

The Left also needs more specific clarification of its vision and agenda, and this book does not provide that in more than a few pages. After reading many anti-Bush books, I bought Huntington's latest because of the subtitle, "The Game Plan for Winning Back America". But the "Game Plan", in the simplest form, was really a brief addendum to a book which focused almost entirely on what is wrong, rather than what we need to make right and how to do it.

I do not however want to dissuade readers from buying and reading this book. The more you learn about what's really going on in this country and its effect on the world and future of this planet, the more appalled you may be... and the more committed to helping bring about a new Democratic regime. If you are wanting to learn more about what's wrong, read this book (and Hightower's Thieves in High Places, Hartmann's We the People, Derber's Regime Change Begins at Home and People Before Profit, and Byrd's Losing Ground - all which I preferred). But once you know what's wrong and are well-informed enough to share it with others, and once you have lived in your outrage long enough to want to channel your anger into commitment and vision, you may then be ready for a Game Plan for America which goes beyond Huntington. You might then wish to read John Kerry's Call to Service and Plan for America. They at least provide the seeds which can eventually blossom into a new kind of government, one which serves the needs of its people, in action as well as words.
