If you love Vermont--understand it.......2003-09-06
As a resident of Vermont, I found this book to be one of the definitive works about Vermont's natural habitat. It is quite the eyeopener. The interactions of all the natural wonders of the state are completely explained, as well as the definitions of the specific ecosystems found everywhere. With this book I was able to map vernal pools, hemlock swamps and other sensitive habitats around me. Absolutely invaluable.
taking the next step.......2003-06-09
I came to this book as a relative beginner in nature observation, I could pick out the major tree species, but not much more than that. This guide was of tremendous help to me in learning to see relationships between tree types and the soil, exposeur, water, and other plants. The text is focused on Vermont, but I found it very helpful in New Hampshire, and I am sure it would be useful in Maine and New York as well as some of the Great Lakes areas. It is also very beautiful to look at, though some what difficult to read straight through from cover to cover. Take it with you on a hike, or during fly season look at it when you get back.
I hope there are or will be additional books of this type for other areas of the country / world. The authors and artist have set a high standard.

The Best Book I Ever Read.......1999-12-30
This book is a godsend. Without it, I would have thrown myself to the Animal Kingdom's elephants for lack of appropriate vacation ideas.
Great Overview.......1998-07-07
If you plan to visit WDW without children, this book gives you a summary of attractions worth seeing, and skips over those less-memorable attractions. However, if you want to see what creates Disney magic for all ages, this may not be the best guide. There are many sites that will charm adult visitors which are simply not mentioned in this book. If you have limited time, and only want to experience the not-to-be-missed attractions, this will give you a quick overview. Reviews of resorts and restaurants are accurate, but again you will be missing out on some of what Disney does best. After all, aren't we here to recapture some of out childhood fantasies? I would use this guide as an outline for my adult vacation, but would do a little more reading as well.

Theoretical Neuroscience: Computational and Mathematical Modeling of Neural Systems
ASIN: 0521022223 |
Book Description
The human brain contains billions of nerve cells whose activity plays a critical role in the way we behave, feel, perceive, and think. This two-volume set explains the basic properties of a neuron--an electrically active nerve cell--and develops mathematical theories for the way neurons respond to the various stimuli they receive. Volume 1 contains descriptions and analyses of the principle mathematical models that have been developed for neurons in the past thirty years. It provides a brief review of the basic neuroanatomical and neurophysiological facts that will form the focus of the mathematical treatment. Tuckwell discusses the mathematical theories, beginning with the theory of membrane potentials. He then goes on to treat the Lapicque model, linear cable theory, and time-dependent solutions of the cable equations. He concludes with a description of Rall's model nerve cell. Because the level of mathematics increases steadily upward from Chapter Two some familiarity with differential equations and linear algebra is desirable.
Customer Reviews:
The most mathematically cogent introduction to electrophysiology.......2007-02-28
Of all the introductory texts on electrophysiology, this one is by far the most mathematically literate. This is a two volume set. Volume 1 covers Nernst Plaank equilibrium equations, integrate and fire neurons, linear cable theory and the Rall model of dendrites. Volume 2 delves into the theory of the action potential - Hodgkin Huxley eqs and the various spinoffs, and some stochastic theory of spontaneous activity. This book was published in 1988, so it predates much of the more recent electrophysiological theory including the zoo of channels and current sources that have been more recently characterized, or the theory of recurrent networks, for example. Also, there are other books - Aidley's Physiology of Excitable Cells, or Kandel and Schwartz - that convey more sense of the underlying biology. But for a mathematically coherent treatment of the bedrock concepts in electrophysiology, nothing else comes close.

Book Description
This book describes signal processing aspects of neural networks, how we receive and assess information. Beginning with a presentation of the necessary background material in electronic circuits, mathematical modeling and analysis, signal processing, and neurosciences, it proceeds to applications. These applications include small networks of neurons, such as those used in control of warm-up and flight in moths and control of respiration during exercise in humans. Next, Hoppensteadt develops a theory of mnemonic surfaces and presents material on pattern formation and cellular automata. Finally, the text addresses the large networks, such as the thalamus-reticular complex circuit, that may be involved in focusing attention, and the development of connections in the visual cortex. This book will serve as an excellent text for advanced undergraduates and graduates in the physical sciences, mathematics, engineering, medicine and life sciences.
Customer Reviews:
A Condensed, Economical, and Introductory Book on Studying Neuron Firing.......2007-08-11
The goal of Hoppensteadt's book is "to study the frequency and timing of neuron firing and how these can interact in networks to carry information and to control biological systems."
Hoppensteadt's book is condensed. It has 211 pages, but seven chapters and two appendixes. The readers will need other books for better and deeper understanding on the presented material. A case in point is that I have purchased this book for a long time, but I am not able to read through it until Dr. Diana Verzi and Dr. Imre Tuba, both of San Diego State University, gave me Christof Koch's "Biophysics of Computation." Biophysics of Computation has more than five hundred (500) pages. Later on, under the suggestion of Dr. Verzi, I purchased Eugene M. Izhikevich's "Dynamical Systems in Neuroscience: The Geometry of Excitability and Bursting" for better and deeper understanding the material presented on Hoppensteadt's book. Izhikevich's book has more than four hundred (400) pages.
Hoppensteadt's book is an economical introductory book on how to apply mathematics on physiological research though. Chapter one, two, and four covers the background material for the rest of the book, such as useful electrical circuits, theory of simple clock, and signal processing in phase-locked systems. Chapter three and five covers the mathematical models of neurons and neural networks. Chapter six and seven presents memory and attention. Appendix A provides the mathematical background on low pass filter and harmonic oscillator. Appendix B presents bifurcation analysis.

Book Description
The method of compensated compactness as a technique for studying hyperbolic conservation laws is of fundamental importance in many branches of applied mathematics. Until now, however, most accounts of this method have been confined to research papers. Offering the first comprehensive treatment, Hyperbolic Conservation Laws and the Compensated Compactness Method gathers together into a single volume the essential ideas and developments. The authors begin with the fundamental theorems, then consider the Cauchy problem of the scalar equation, build a framework for L8 estimates of viscosity solutions, and introduce the Invariant Region Theory. The study then turns to methods for symmetric systems of two equations and two equations with quadratic flux, and the extension of these methods to the Le Roux system. After examining the system of polytropic gas dynamics (g-law), the authors first study two special systems of one-dimensional Euler equations, then consider the general Euler equations for one-dimensional compressible fluid flow, and extend that method to systems of elasticity in L8 space. Weak solutions for the elasticity system are introduced and an application to adiabatic gas flow through porous media is considered. The final four chapters explore applications of the compensated compactness method to the relaxation problem. With its careful account of the underlying ideas, development of applications in key areas, an inclusion of the author's own contributions to the field, this monograph will prove a welcome addition to the literature and to your library.

Book Description
Expelled from Botswana for writing Cry of the Kalahari, the Owenses set off across Africa. They settled in Zambia, where they soon found their peace shattered by the gunfire of elephant poachers. This is the story of the couple's battle to save the elephants and their own lives.
Customer Reviews:
"By telling the truth...they incur a measure of personal and professional risk;.......2007-09-04
"...by not telling it, we all risk much, much more."-The Owenses
Poaching is a big problem in Africa. There are laws against it, but the villagers are very poor, the people are hungry and in many, many countries of Africa, the governments are either corrupt or are unstable. This story takes place in northeastern Zambia near Tanzania. The story begins with the Owenses returning to Botswana to continue their research into predator-prey relationships. They find some of their familiar, furry, thin friends in the desert wilderness only to almost immediately be apprehended by the authorities and get kicked out of the country because their research conflicts with the government's plans to develop cattle ranches in the Kalahari desert. They wander aimlessly through the African skies and wind up in Zambia where they soon have a new mission to stop elephant poaching which has nearly decimated the elephant population there.
I love how both Mark and Delia write. Their descriptions of Africa sometimes remind me of Isak Dinesen's Out of Africa. I've read all their books now and they really are very hard to put down. Their work in Zambia takes a toll on their health as it did in Botswana, but in slightly different ways. In the Kalahari, they were in no man's land and went for many months without seeing people. In Zambia, there are small villages nearer to them where they can restock their very meager supplies. The toll on their bodies this time around though is intense because in declaring their mission to stop poaching, they trigger a violent response from the poachers armed with their Kalashnikovs (AK-47's). Mark gets so upset when he sees animals senselessly slaughtered whether they be hundreds of thousands of wildebeest in Botswana or elephants in Zambia. There's a lot to be found in their books about animal behavior and social organization. With elephants, the females stay in their natal clans and males migrate out to mate and congregate. The poaching, however, takes a toll on their social structure since the elephants with the largest tusks are the sexually mature animals and many orphaned elephants roam the wilderness alone without a group to call their own.
The Owens' take to task educating the villagers and teaching them new industries, new methods of agriculture so that they are more subsistent. It takes a decade to finally begin to make an impact on transforming their society and removing the incentives to poach. There are several attempts on their lives, but you'll have quite the time in Mark's bush piloting, air force policing of Zambia's Luangwa National Park.
Wonders of the Wild.......2006-11-04
This book is laden with fascinating information on African Wildlife and how to survive as human and animal in harsh conditions. Excellent read.
A riveting, disturbing story of war with poachers.......2005-06-01
Wildlife researchers and conservationists Delia and Mark Owens have spent much of their lives since 1974 in the African bush, first in the Kalahari Desert from which came their best seller "Cry of the Kalahari" and then in the North Luangwa Valley in Zambia, the setting of this 1992 book.
The Owens' passion leads them to risk their lives routinely. In searching for a suitable camp in North Luangwa they set out in an ancient truck with no radio and inadequate gear. After a grueling trek that would have sent sane mortals packing for home they separate so Mark can fly his Cessna to a site that "would make Cessna's insurance company shudder" while Delia makes the two-day trip alone with the old truck and a trailer over trackless hilly, bushy, gully-filled flood-plain terrain. Tracking animals they are constantly walking smack into a startled lion or buffalo or cornered elephant.
But the real danger comes from people. "The Eye of the Elephant," while filled with wildlife anecdotes and tidbits of information about elephants and lions, is really about the poaching war the Owens conducted on behalf of the besieged North Luangwa elephants.
The poachers are villagers, many armed with AK47s, backed by the local government and assisted by the corrupt and underequipped local game guards. The Owens' weapons are education, cottage industry projects financed by the Owens Foundation for Wildlife Conservation and the Cessna.
The battle starts genially with children exclaiming over magazine pictures and their parents joining sewing circles and carpentry workshops. But it quickly escalates until Mark drives Delia from him with his obsession for highly dangerous and only modestly effective night flights, and the poachers organize an assassination squad to rid themselves of the Owens once and for all.
The book is organized in alternating first-person chapters between Delia and Mark. The tone is brutally honest, touching when one admits to mistakes which endanger the other, disturbing when their frank discussion of anti-poaching tactics veers from the politically correct. The Owens' care more for the animals and the landscape than the people. But since the people are there, their needs must be faced. Their singlemindedness will outrage some, but their strong personalities and sheer stamina will awe almost everyone.

EXCELLENT ADVENTURE!.......2004-06-26
I wish these authors would write more books about their adventures in Africa. Truly riveting page-turners!
Do not miss this wonderful book!.......2002-08-19
The Eye of the Elephant is a wonderful, adventurous journey into the heart and soul of Africa seen through Mark and Delia's eyes. From the very first page you are caught up in their heroic quests to protect the animals they are there to observe. In spite of the unbelievable odds against them, they persevered and put the safety and security of the highly endangered animals FIRST. The elephants in the Luanga Valley are very fortunate to have had Mark and Delia watch over them and be their heroes. I have loved Africa and the African elephant my entire life and I am so grateful for these two selfless, dedicated people who have become the protectors of our most precious wildlife. This is one of my most treasured African stories.

The Washington Artillery.......2000-01-21
"The Pride of the Confederate Artillery" provides a well researched look into the experiences of a group of volunteers that went off to defend their state during the war of Northern aggression. It is not overly detailed as to the movements of the unit, but does provide a well thought out and insightful look at the sufferings of the soldiers as they do their duty. Mr. Hughes also points out how the class differences between the bourgeois cannoneers and the lower class drivers and teamsters dissolved during battle only to resurface after. This book is highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
One I won't forget.......2002-11-08
I read this book while waiting for delivery of the more well-known book `City of Quartz' by Mike Davis. I am glad I read this one first. It is a well-documented and scholarly book, yet full of passion and feeling about the City of the Angels. It focuses almost exclusively on `Downtown', whereas Davis's book ranges more widely.
I was left in no doubt about Klein's feeling for that part of LA - he lives in Anegelino Heights - the first suburb just north of Downtown. Klein brings to life through personal anecdote the vitality and multiculturalism (and problems) of his, and other neighbourhoods.
You get to boo and hiss at the villains who have alienated greater LA from its Downtown, but you also get a sense of Klein's affection, and sense of hope for the city.Davis's view is much bleaker and perhaps nihilistic - he rails against the racism upon which LA is foundered, and upon which the powerful thrive, but I note in passing that he lives in the uppermiddle class enclave of Pasadena. Klein, on the other hand (at least at the time of writing) remains part of the inner urban fabric of the city. I get the feeling that Klein is a supporter of urban renewal, whereas Davis views it as another alienating con on the part of City Hall.
I agree with a previous reviewer that the novella within the book doesn't quite work. I think it contains the seeds of a good story in another genre, but is misplaced here. One problem may be the attempt to speak in a voice for which he has respect, but which is not his.
If you are interested in all things LA, film and fictive noir, the great upheavals and crises of a city such as the Rodney King affair and the LAPD, apocalyptic LA, and more - all of which penetrate the consciousness of many way way beyond the city (through globalised media, which is part of the fabric of LA) , then you will be enthralled by this book. Read it alongside Davis, by all means, but don't neglect it in favour of Davis!
If you like discussion of film and fiction set in LA, there is lots in this book to ponder.
Note: Klein cites Davis in his work. I have not seen Klein cited in any work of Davis (understandable in City of Quartz, which predates Klein's work, but he also does not appear in the index for Davis's later work Ecology of Fear - which at the time of writing this I have not yet read)
Klein provides an essential vocabulary for understanding LA........1999-04-14
The the text is full of concepts that put LA into historical and theoretical perspective. The only part of this book that doesn't shine is the middle chapter, seven, where Klein attempts a novel set in LA. This should have stayed in his notebook.
Academic yet accessible, The History of Forgetting gives readers an essential vocabulary through which they can filter their understanding of LA.
"Social imaginary," "trace," "simultaneous distraction," and other ideas help reinforce the central idea that LA exists as a series of what the subtitle calls "erasure(s)."
I'm using this book with my college class, and while they occasionally struggle, they've gained a sense of power in their ability to take the ideas Klein puts forth and use them to interpret fiction set in LA.
The text is more compelling that Mike Davis's latest, book, and certainly of interest to anyone who studies popular culture or contemporary literature.
Almost City of Quartz.......1998-03-28
The History of Forgetting is among the best of the newly bourgeoning genre of LA urban history and theory. Much of the information within is presented in an engaging, if leftist style. This book fits well alongside Mike Davis' landmark City of Quartz, though it's rather self indulgent chapter of fiction (written from the point of view of a Vietnamese immigrant), is tiresome and ultimately incongruous with Klein's apparent desire to expose the rewriting of LA's various histories. A strong, if flawed book.
Dark, darker, darkest.......1997-11-15
If you love L.A. don't read this book. If you don't want people to come here -- have them read it. This book was really a good read and made me realize why I used to dream of fires and floods about this city. It can really give you nightmares and make you a little sad that this city is indeed void of soul. Why though? Why? It's in a prime location, has lots of promise, etc., but just can't equal up to other great cities. Maybe because it just tears down things over and over again? If this city becomes like Blade Runner I'm a'leavin' for sure. Yet, when I look at the palm fronds glisten in the sun and the ocean waves sparkle against a vivid blue sky, I feel as if my heart is stuck here. Los Angeles is like an orphan who gets shuttled around. "...Forgetting" is a haunting expose' that left me blue so I had to rent a gut-splitting comedy (filmed elsewhere USA) from my neighborhood video store which used to be four other stores before that one. But of course I don't know what they used to be since all signs of former tenants have been erased.

Customer Reviews:
A resource book that inspires.......1998-10-28
This book gave me a positive pre-view of the future I always hoped could be. For example, In the referances for one of the chapters on finances I found several mutual funds operated by environmental friendly companies. These eco-mutual funds have made me money and a percentage of the profits the funds earn go to very respectable environmental 'charities' etc. Read this book if you want to find a way to feel good about what you investments are doing!
Don't miss this book!.......1997-11-23
Ausubel's Restoring the Earth is vital, inspiring, and unique. In reading it, you will see the future of agriculture, design, medicine, and much more. For once, a book that fluidly merges and illuminates both social and environmental realities. For once, instead of simply depressing you or just screaming "somebody do something!"--it addresses these urgent realities with exciting solutions that are *already* tried and true. This is more than a lucid, intelligent outline of our planet's most pressing circumstances, it is a series of well-written stories about today's visionaries: innovative, real people that have come up with almost magical solutions to save biodiversity and money at the same time. Reading Ausubel's book is a great way to be educated and uplifted at the same time.
