Customer Reviews:
THIS BOOK IS TOO LONG!.......2001-08-13
Everything about Australia's fire history from its geologic origins to the 1983 Ash Wednesday fires can be found in this book. Perhaps a little too much. We learn about everything from the Flora and Fauna of the continent, to aboriginal fire practices, to modern fire fighting techniques. If one wishes to know about all of this, then the Burning Bush is an indespensible source. For those with more narrow interests, be weary. I bought the book to learn about the major fires that have devastated the country periodically. The accounts are there, but the first one appeared 220 pages into the book! All of the accounts combined cover only around twenty pages. Readers with similar interests will find the book to be a 400 page yawn. Pyne would have been better served to narrow his focus a bit. It's all there, but more than most other books the reader will want to refer to the index rather than slog through each page.

Book Description
Australia is one of the few countries in the world generally associated with a single group of plants, namely - the eucalypts.
The genus Eucalyptus includes over 800 species and over 326 are described in this volume. In particular it is significant as it features the colorful eucalypts of Western Australia, which have been widely used for landscaping. The area covered includes the Great Victoria Desert, and extends across the Nullabor Plain, to most of South Australia and into areas of New South Wales which lie to the north and west of the River Darling.
Since the first edition of Volume 2 was published in 1990, many new species have been formally named. The numerous subsequent discoveries are included in the Appendix of the Volume. In addition, the layout of the book has been updated and reorganized to be consistent with the latest formal classification of the genus. Important features are emphasized in bolder type and color illustrations show the tree or mallee and its bark, buds and fruit. Botanical terms are explained and illustrated.

Field Guide to Eucalypts Vol. 1 Southeastern Australia.......2002-02-20
Have second edition updated 1999
Good key, discussion of bark catagories, leaf phases, & other distinguishing features.
For each tree has:
Good photo of overall tree shape/form
Good photo of bark characteristics
Excellent photo of bud
some with bud and flower (maybe one out of 6-7 trees)
Excellent photo of fruit
Very few photos of leaves.
Would have liked to see juvenile and mature leaves.
Discussion of distribution gives clues to type of soil tree is adapted to.
Would have liked to seen some comment if trees adapt to cultivation or are invasive etc.
Overall, best Eucalyptus book I've seen to date.

Amazon.com's Best of 2001
Fans of Zelda, Nancy Milford's groundbreaking (and bestselling) biography of F. Scott Fitzgerald's tortured wife and muse, have been waiting impatiently since 1970 for Milford's promised follow-up about poet Edna St. Vincent Millay (1892-1950). It's finally here, and they will not be disappointed. Milford's vivid narrative limns an electric personality with psychological acuity while capturing the freewheeling atmosphere of America in the turbulent years following World War I. After "Renascence" was published (when she was only 20) and she moved to Greenwich Village, Millay was the queen of bohemia, taking lovers with zest and voicing the reckless gaiety of a generation in her famous lyric, "My candle burns at both ends; / It will not last the night; / But, ah, my foes, and, oh, my friends-- / It gives a lovely light." With her flame-red hair, milk-white skin, and a voice that thrilled audiences (making her poetry readings a welcome source of income), Millay was the archetypal "new woman": powerful, passionate, and not to be ignored. But Milford makes it clear that her first loyalty was to her mother and sisters, and her deepest commitment to her writing. This juicy chronicle has famous names aplenty--critic Edmund Wilson and Masses editor Floyd Dell were among the men devastated by her refusal to be faithful--and lots of dissipation: Millay drank heavily and became addicted to morphine. It also takes a perceptive look at how an artist draws material from her life and at the strategies she uses to protect the wellsprings of creativity. Brief passages interspersed throughout delineating Milford's interactions with Norma Millay, the poet's younger sister and literary executor, might have been self-indulgent and self-aggrandizing; instead they offer intriguing snapshots of the complex process by which biography is made. The resulting book is a tour de force, and wildly entertaining as well. --Wendy Smith
Book Description
Thomas Hardy once said that America had two great attractions: the skyscraper and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. The most famous poet of the Jazz Age, Millay captivated the nation: She smoked in public, took many lovers (men and women, single and married), flouted convention sensationally, and became the embodiment of the New Woman.
Thirty years after her landmark biography of Zelda Fitzgerald, Nancy Milford returns with an iconic portrait of this passionate, fearless woman who obsessed America even as she tormented herself. Chosen by USA Today as one of the top ten books of the year, Savage Beauty is a triumph in the art of biography. Millay was an American original—one of those rare characters, like Sylvia Plath and Ernest Hemingway, whose lives were even more dramatic than their art.
Download Description
Thirty years after the smashing success of Zelda, Milford returns with a stunning second act. Savage Beauty is the portrait of Edna St. Vincent Millay, a passionate, fearless woman who obsessed America even as she tormented herself.
Customer Reviews:
Too heavy on the research to be a good read.......2007-08-04
I was looking forward to this book, having enjoyed Milford's "Zelda" very much. But boy, you have to plow your way through seemingly every letter Millay ever wrote or received. Some details are relentlessly spelled out while other, more salient points don't get the attention they deserve. (What physical or mental problems were really at the root of her most serious breakdown? When, exactly, and why did her morphine addiction take root?) And I don't know what anyone else thought about it, but I felt Milford paid far, far too much attention to Millay's anatomy. It was off-putting to me. I also find it annoying when photographs are described in detail in the text but do not appear in the picture sections.
Edna St. Vincent Millay's life certainly mirrored that of her most famous poem, "First Fig"; she did burn the candle at both ends. Her personal life was largely a sad one, but she brought a lot of her personal woes upon herself. Better to read the poems. . . they remain fresh as ever, revealing and possessed of a remarkable clarity and gift for the turn of phrase.
Enlightening.......2007-01-10
Surprised to find out she had a very active and interesting life. Would not know it by the writings she composed.
I loved this book........2006-09-29
I picked this book up for the first time in a summer rental house. I couldn't put it down and I had to run out and buy my own copy when I got home. I was not familiar with Millay before reading this book, so I cannot compare it to the million other opinions of her, but as a narrative on its own I have been mesmerized. I think this is an extremely well written biography that captures the essence of the relationships we nuture and cherish. Everytime I pick it up again I slip effortlessly into a different place in time when one could simply be an artist, a genius, and be celebrated. The descriptions are vivid and the narrative is strong and engaging. It's simply a well written book and I loved it.
Edna St. Vincent Millay, Subject of Nancy Milford (oh, and she was a poet, too).......2006-08-04
In this biography, Milford seems to be an historian first and a writer second. Or, perhaps, a prima donna first, an historian second, and then a writer. There is nothing wrong with either order unless one's prerogative in reading happens to be pleasure. Then, dear reader, it seems you have been "punk'd."
While I reveled in the details of Millay's life there were a few I wish Milford would have omitted: the "dramatic natural beauty" of the New England where Millay grew up; the lack of transition between paragraphs; and, perhaps the most aggravating, Milford herself! While the author has undoubtedly waded through a great deal of documents and interviews, one feels she doesn't quite know what to do with them. Other reviewers have noted that Milford hasn't processed or analyzed much of the material, but simply dumps it on the reader to sort out. And I agree. Further, she parades Millay's surviving sister, Norma, about as a primary source. However, while Norma's reflections and recollections are used when convenient, she seems to serve largely as the vehicle for Milford to infiltrate her own subject's biography! Indeed, while Norma is portrayed as a loving and level-headed sister and human being in the text, the prologue paints her as fickle, selfish, and maniuplative while Milford is the one righteous and serene. Other scenes and dialogues involving Norma seem random until one realizes Milford is characterizing Norma or inserting herself (once, as the object of Norma's sexual advance. The vixen!) One is reminded of Boswell's "Life of Samuel Johnson" which scholars joke ought to be renamed, "Samuel Johnson, Friend of James Boswell." If Milford could get out of her own way, this would likely be a very fine read. Truthfully, I did not dislike it. Not entirely. I only wish it were friendlier to those of us not preparing for assignments on great American poets. And an homage to Millay rather than to Milford.
Edna deserved better.......2006-05-13
I have always loved the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay and eagerly looked forward to reading Milford's book, as a matter of fact I was extremely happy to see the size and heft of the book thinking that Milford must have clearly explored all the facets of Millay's life. humpf
Milford was given access to a tremendous amount of Millay's papers/letters/journals/photos and even was able to interview Millay's sister, Norma. With the wealth of material at her hands about a truly fascinating, gifted, and tragic woman this biography should have been an insightful, mesmerizing page-turner. . . key words here are SHOULD HAVE BEEN!
Instead I was bored. Lots of facts. Lots and lots of long excerpts of letters to and from Millay - minus comments or analysis from Milford. No delving into Millay's philosophy on life and men. No exploring the depth of emotion in Millay's poems.
Oh, and another thing, the book provides photos but many of them are never addressed in the book. Now if the pic was just of Millay's face, ok, I don't need background BUT when a photo says "Recovering from her operation . . ." and the book never mentions an operation then we have a problem. And there were many problems. Yes, I know I sound cranky and this review may even seem disjointed but that is because I am so frustrated and angry over being cheated.
Millay deserves better. Readers deserve better.

A well researched book.......2005-10-24
This is a well researched and well written book on the Korean War with many details and a succint analysis of the political environment. However it focuses almost exclusively on the operations of US and ROK troops. Hardly any detail is given on the engagements of other allied forces under the common UN command, except a few references here and there to British and Australians troops.
We Didn't Lose The War.......2002-05-25
This is a good book, one that provides much insight into the Pol-Mil factors that dominated the Korean War. Yet I take exception to the author's title. The UN Forces did not lose the Korean War. Perhaps the author wanted a snazzy title. I can assure you that he succeeded in alienating the brave veterans who stopped the Communists cold in Korea. The Communists lost the war. The nKs didn't unify Korea under the domination of the Red Star. nK was devastated and has never fully recovered from launching an aggressiveve war aagainst the RoK. Red China lost the war, losing at least 600,000 men including Mao's favorite son. More importantly, the Red Chinese delayed a national modernization plan when they jumped into a war at Stalin's bidding, setting China's receovery back thirty-years. Furthermore, the Chinese intervention in Korea made it politically possible for the US to intervene in the Taiwan Straits, preventing the Unification of China, one of Mao's stated and most important goals. Finally, the Soviet Union lost the war it encouraged Kim Il Sung to start. NATO was a hallow reed before the KW; it became a force capable of deterring Soviet intervention in Western Europe afterwards, all thanks to Uncle Joe's meddling in the Far East. In short, I take exception to the book's title. Semper Fi
Korea: The first war our politicians lost for us!!!.......2002-02-14
This is truly a good read - a bit much detail wise - but, nonetheless a good read. I am sad to note that it was my generation that rushed from our high school graduation down to the recruiting offices to do our patriotic duty only to be denied any chance to win by Truman and his ilk. Of only 25 boys in my class, 17 of us volunteered and 3 of these young men are buried in Korea. What a sad, sad waste. Back to the book - it is well worthwhile. Certainly you will learn a great deal about this"Police Action"

Korea: The First war we lost
Bevin Alexander's book suffers from too much of a good thing-organization. 492 pages are divided into 63 chapters. Each chapter identifies a good point, but in trying to cover all of them, the book develops few of them sufficiently. Instead, Alexander skips from idea to idea, devoting fewer than ten pages, and then flits off to the next idea.
The scope of his topic, from the bowels of the White House and Pentagon to the nameless ridges and valleys of Korea, is immense. In trying to cover it all, he has instead touched only the "wavetops." At the end of the book, after following the trail of policy decisions, Alexander fails to present a cogent, convincing argument that the US and her UN coalition partners indeed lost this war. The (final) stated war aim was to restore South Korea's sovereignty, and that was accomplished. I think that Alexander implicitly accepts MacArthur's statement that there is no substitute for victory, and no such thing as a war for limited objectives. While the first part is true, victory is defined by the use of military means to accomplish political objectives, and in Korea, the US and UN coalition succeeded.
The strongest theme in the book is the identification of the policy struggles between the new National Command Authorities, National Security Advisor, Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Commander in Chief, Far East. Alexander does a solid job of defining the problem in terms of positions and policy, rather than the normal MacArthur versus Truman debate. He also explores the impact of MacArthur's seniority relative to the Joint Chiefs (MacArthur was the only active five star general).
Another strength of the book is its maps. Since (usually) authors have to pay for whatever maps they want included in a book, most include as few as possible. Alexander includes fourteen, most of them tactical level maps. Building off of the maps, the chapters that deal with separate battles are solid. The weakness is that Alexander fails top explain the operational integration of a series of battles into a campaign designed to accomplish strategic objectives.
If you are already familiar with the Korean War, this book can serve as an interesting read for a new look at the integration of the strategic aims with the daily battle plan, and a revealing look at the difficulty of making defense and foreign policy since 1947. If, however, you are looking for a one volume single read introit to the subject, this is not the book to read.
A seminal contribution to American military studies.......2001-02-14
In a newly revised edition, Bevin Alexander's Korea: The First War We Lost continues to be an exhaustive, scholarly exploration of the causes and effects of American involvement in the Korean War. Alexander, a combat historian during the Korean War and commander of the 5th Historical Detachment, points out the U.S. succeeded in stopping North Korean aggression, but failed in its attempt to destroy the North Korean state and eliminate this strategic shield protecting China's heartland. Alexander's informative and comprehensive text is enhanced with thirteen maps and is a seminal contribution to American military studies in general, and the Korean conflict in particular.

Book Description
This book explores the application of federal Indian policy to Alaska Natives in the 20th century, a process driven by the federal government's desire to acquire Indian land. Twentieth century Indian policy, as applied in Alaska, has oscillated between encouraging the privatization of land and assimilation of Native Alaskans into the dominant society, and allowing for Native autonomy and self-government.
The Alaska Reorganization Act of 1936, better known as the Alaska Native New Deal, promoted Native self-government through constitutions and native self-sufficiency through corporations within geographic limits of designated reservations. In Alaska, the federal government's termination policy extended state jurisdiction over Native peoples after World War Two. A new policy of self-determination was initiated by the passage of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. With this act, 40 million acres were conveyed to newly created Native corporations. Alaska Natives would achieve self-determination by participation in corporate decisions. This history of the legislation and implementation of federal Indian policy in Alaska explores the tensions and reversals expressed through successive legislative acts, and focuses upon the implications of this policy for Native Alaskans.

Book Description
At the start of the 21st century, fighting poverty and protecting the environment are two of the most urgent challenges facing the international community, as highlighted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.
This book shows how poverty reduction and environmental protection must be forged into a coherent policy from the local to the global level. Only an integrated approach which involves civil-society actors can fulfill the guiding vision of sustainable development.
This book covers:
* The challenges of poverty reduction and environmental policy
* Recommendations on policy coherence
* Breathing life into the Global Partnership for Environment and Development
