Book Description
This book examines the biological, especially the neural, substrates of affiliation and related social behaviors. Affiliation refers to social behaviors that bring individuals closer together. This includes such associations as attachment, parent-offspring interactions, pair-bonding, and the building of coalitions. Affiliations provide a social matrix within which other behaviors, including reproduction and aggression, may occur. While reproduction and aggression also reduce the distance between individuals, their expression is regulated in part by the positive social fabric of affiliative behavior.
Until recently, researchers have paid little attention to the regulatory physiology and neural processes that subserve affiliative behaviors. The integrative approach in this book reflects the constructive interactions between those who study behavior in the context of natural history and evolution and those who study the nervous system.
The book contains the partial proceedings of a conference of the same title held in Washington, DC, in 1996. The full proceedings was published as part of the Annals of the York Academy of Sciences.

The Family in Ancient Rome: New Perspectives
ASIN: 0198150458 |
Book Description
The family has played a central role in most societies, and the complexity and variety of that role has engaged the minds of scholars from a wide range of disciplines. Recent studies of ancient Rome have shown that the sentimental ideal of a core nuclear family was strong throughout the period, but that the reality was often different. This book looks in detail at many aspects of the composition and inner workings of the Roman family and provides an illuminating case-study of the sentimental ideal vis-a-vis everyday reality. The areas of study covered are adult-child relationships (Beryl Rawson), the frequency of divorce (Susan Treggiari), divorce and adoption as familial strategies (Mireille Corbier), remarriage and the structure of the upper-class Roman family (K. R. Bradley), the sentimental ideal of the Roman family (Suzanne Dixon), fathers and sons (Emiel Eyben), familial authority and obedience (Richard Saller), children of freedmen (P. R. C. Weaver), and the impact of domestic architecture with reference to Pompeii and Herculaneum (Andrew Wallace-Hadrill).
Customer Reviews:
quality varies.......2000-05-17
The quality of the book is varied as the quality of the articles included varies. Some of the scholars have clear biases they are operating from in their research, most are not up front about such bias. Rawson has however, collected some of the leading scholars in the field into one place thus providing the reader with a good range of views and topics. A good book for a class on the ancient family.
Book Description
His undying passion for Christ continues to inspire and challenge those with a deep spiritual hunger for the things of God. Now acclaimed Bible teacher and author Beth Moore traces the life of the apostle Paul from his childhood to his martyrdom. Readers will be greatly refreshed by the obvious mercy of God that cause those who have failed him to repent and serve Him wholeheartedly and effectively.
Customer Reviews:
Jeffreyh.......2007-01-26
This is perhaps as good as any of everything Beth Moore has written, although given the very un-attractive cover design, this book did poorly in 'popular' sales. But by word from experience, this is extremely well written in keeping consistent with her context, and yet contains some very honest interpretations which is at times a hard pill to swallow, but insightfully proposed with clear challenges, as well as an in-depth view of truly what is associated and required "to Live is Christ" embodied through one willing to submit to Jesus Christ without compromise. This is a must for any person seriously wishing to follow Jesus un-swaveringly.
Study on the life and influence of Paul.......2002-08-13
If you are looking for a definitive study of the life of Paul, this would be a good place to start. Beth Moore begins by reconstructing what Paul's early life must have been like, based on studies of Jewish life in those times. She then proceeds to the Biblical accounts in Acts which describe his conversion, and subsequent ministry. She then proceeds to the letters Paul wrote to his disciples, such as Timothy. Moore teaches us what a truly inspiring figure Paul is and applies his example of faithfulness into what God would have us aspire to today.
Awesome writer.......2002-04-19
I first became aware of the vibrancy of Beth Moore's teachings at my church's women's group. What an awesome teacher of God's word she is,and this book did not disappoint me. Beth takes a look at the life of Paul, from his birth, conversion from a zealous Jew to a humbled Christian, and the missionary journeys he undertook in Christ's name and brings them to life on these pages. She has a way of pondering aspects of the biblical narratives that really open one's eyes, and gives you a depth and breadth and taste of what life might have been like for the apostle Paul that one normally wouldn't realize, and then encourages and challenges us to live our lives for Christ in similar ways. I did not read this book in one sitting, but read a little every day, and came away delighted to have "tasted" each morsel she offered. I love Beth Moore's devotion to the Lord, and she has inspired me.

New interpretation of Philip Sheridan's 1864 Valley campaign
Firsthand reports of property captured or destroyed by Federals
Conventional wisdom has it that the Shenandoah Valley, called the granary of the Confederacy, was of vital strategic importance during the Civil War. New evidence, however, shows that since most of its resources were depleted by late 1862, the significance of the Valley has been overestimated. The author uses an extensive array of primary sources to back up this revolutionary thesis: diaries of Valley residents; records and correspondence of the Confederacys Subsistence, Quartermaster, and War Departments; dispatches between Robert E. Lee and his subordinates; as well as recently discovered tax-in-kind records.
Customer Reviews:
Granary of the Confederacy?.......2000-12-31
Michael G. Mahon's book, "The Shenandoah Valley" is a good book on the economic impact this area had on the early United States and the Confederacy during the Civil War. He begins with a comprehensive look at this part of Virginia prior to the war and then continues through the military battles that were fought up and down this valley. Mr. Mahon uses historical information, coupled with first hand stories, to explain why he believes that the idea of the Shenandoah Valley was the granary of the Confederacy and its destruction led to the fall of the Southern States is wrong. This is a well written, yet easily read book.
Book Description
The FBI that failed on 9/11 is the creation and captive of its spectacular and controversial past. Its original mission -- the investigation and prosecution of only the most serious crimes against the United States -- was forsaken almost from the beginning. This abandonment of purpose has been accompanied by a long history of political pressure, both from within and without. This sorry and scandal-ridden path culminated in a twenty-five-year run-up to 9/11 in which predictable and preventable lapses became hopelessly entrenched.
In Broken, Richard Gid Powers, one of the country's leading historians of national security and law enforcement, offers a definitive and provocative study of the Bureau from its origins to the present. Combing through the archives, and interviewing more than 100 past and current agents, he unearths stories behind some of the most famous cases and characters in our history. Powers, who attended new-agent training classes at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, was granted access to restricted FBI facilities. His research included visits to the scenes of controversial FBI cases across the country, including Ruby Ridge, Waco, and the Indian reservation at Pine Ridge.
Powers did not set out to write a muckraking attack, and he gives the Bureau its due for many triumphs. Nonetheless, his story features an astonishing range of political abuses, misdirected investigations, skewed priorities, and sheer intelligence failures.
From the Bureau's outrageous participation in the anticommunist Palmer Raids and their successors, to its abuses of civil liberties during the Cold War, to its flagrant acts of domestic political interference during the civil rights era, it has often seemed to be consumed by feuds with such opponents as Harry Truman, Martin Luther King Jr., the Kennedys, and Bill Clinton. With the discovery of turncoat spies within its own ranks, and with the severe intelligence failures of 9/11, the Bureau has finally proven itself incapable of spotting the true enemies of our country within our borders.
Richard Powers's account is a searing indictment of failure, yet it is also strong evidence that the Bureau could be returned to its original mission of detecting the most serious crimes against the United States: terrorism, political corruption, corporate crime, and organized crime. Readers must decide for themselves whether America should mend it or end it.
Customer Reviews:
If this book doesn't convince you................2005-01-21
then immediately read 1000 Years for Revenge by Peter Lance. Both books bear witness to the fact that FBI management is comprised of failed agents who hide behind desks because they can't make it as a Street Agent. They couldn't find a ham in a phone booth. They are wholly incapable of interviewing anybody;just read about NYC manager Carson Dunbar's treatment of an informant who knew plenty about both attacks on the WTC. Dunbar's incompetence is far worse than that of the military bosses at the time of the Pearl Harbor Attack. One point both authors omit is the high percentage of alcoholics in the management ranks of the FBI. Powers is a talented writer/historian whose earlier bio of Gay Edgar Hoover was truly monumental.
A controversial, intriguing history .......2004-12-12
The FBI's original mission was to investigate and prosecute only the most serious crimes against the U.S. - but it was a mission forsaken almost from the beginning, and its abandonment has been accompanied by a history of political pressures, divisiveness, and political intervention from a wide range of fronts. Richard Gid Powers is one of the country's leading historians of national security and law enforcement, and in Broken: The Troubled Past & Uncertain Future Of The FBI, he offers a compelling history of both the Bureau and the forces working within and outside of it. Broken is strongly recommended as a controversial, intriguing history that is certain to provoke spirited discussion.

Book Description
Arising initially from a conference, the papers published here have been integrated into book form to provide information on human activities and the tropical rainforest in the past and present, and on the possible future of the rainforest, in a unique way. Other books have considered some, but not all, of these themes; however, none has stressed the continuity of change over time and its possible outcome for the people of the forest as well as for the forest itself. Because of the approach taken, this book should appeal across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Indeed a prime aim has been to suggest that rainforest, because of its complexity and the complexity of people-rainforest relationships throughout time, deserves study from a broad perspective. This book poses more questions than answers about the rainforest and it is hoped that it will encourage readers to think about the rainforest in a wider way than hitherto. This book is aimed at geographers (physical and human), social anthropologists, archaeologists, pedologists, foresters and tropical botanists and will be of value to graduates of various disciplines setting out to research the rainforest.

Description:
A generalised linear model was used to predict climatically suitable habitat for the golden bowerbird (Prionodura newtonia De Vis), an endemic species of the Wet Tropics of North Queensland. Mean temperature of the coldest quarter and mean precipitation of the wettest quarter were found to be the best habitat predictors. For independent validation data, accuracy was 67% (Kappa statistic, n=30). Past, and future habitats suitable to the golden bowerbird were mapped by altering the temperature and precipitation input to the model. In the current climate, total potential habitat is estimated to be 1564 km^2, occurring as a number of separate patches with distinct bowerbird subpopulations. Past habitat was most limiting, 406 km^2, during the Holocene climatic optimum (c. 5000-3600 YBP, +2 ^oC and +50% rainfall relative to today). With future warming, assuming a 10% decrease in rainfall, potential habitat is reduced to 582 km^2 (1 ^oC warming), 163 km^2 (2 ^oC warming) and 37 km^2 (3 ^oC warming). Thus, global warming in the coming decades is likely to be a significant threat to the survival of this and similar upland and highland species in the tropics.
