                        Book Description

The signs of France are a gateway into a country proud of its artistic heritage—a past that reveals itself in every nuance of daily life.

Steven Rothfeld has been recording these images for decades, capturing the milky cornflower blues and faded yellows, the hand-lettered, the neatly printed, even signs made from blown glass and wooden carvings. Their uniqueness and the beauty and sensibility of these signs reflect the visual sense of identity that is France. Rothfeld's gallery is accompanied by acclaimed author André Aciman's text, transporting the reader fully to another world.

                        1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2003-10-31

I was disappointed with the book. I was expecting the book to have pictures of many beautiful wrought iron signs that are common in France. However, it only had one. Most of the pictures are plain text signs.

4 out of 5 stars a lovely book and a good idea for a present.......2002-03-02

This book brought me back to the streets of the France I know. It is a perfect book to give as a present, the photos are excellent, the text is discrete and often brings a smile... the whole book is a delightful walk throughh the streets of France and a gentle and fun exploration of French life.

1 out of 5 stars nice photos, atrocious text.......2001-12-11

The images are fine, but the text is the equivalent of hearing one of those obnoxious, ignorant and loud tourists babble endlessly about their bigoted views. Being a lover of France and having lived there for over 30 years I got this as a gift. It was only when I started to read the text that I started to think "hey, wait a second... what the hell?" Thankfully, not even insultingly dumb text can scratch the belle france. As the locals would say, "merde!"

4 out of 5 stars like walking on the streets in France.......2001-12-02

This book offers us a walk through French streets, we are shown the signs on the streets, the shops, the doors. The photos are beautiful and the text adds meaning to our discoveries without ever taking too much place. I have lived in France and this book brought it all back.

5 out of 5 stars Great Combination of Photos and Text.......2001-08-08

This book begins with a marvelous gimmick--the cover opens like the shutters of a window--but the contents far transcend this appealing trick. Rothfeld's photographs capture the beauty and sadness of old signs; they also reveal the pleasure of a well-composed artwork. Equally impressive, Aciman's text is lyrical and effective. It does a terrific job of not simply describing the photographs but instead giving a quick, sharp insight that makes you look at the photo in a new way. This is a truly rewarding book.

                                      Book Description

This book analyzes for the first time how parasites shape the biology of social insects: the ants, wasps, bees, and termites. Paul Schmid-Hempel provides an overview of the existing knowledge of parasites in social insects. Current ideas are evaluated using a broad database, and the role of parasites for the evolution and maintenance of the social organization and biology of insects is carefully scrutinized. In addition, the author develops new insights, especially in his examination of the intricate relationships between parasites and their social hosts through the rigorous use of evolutionary and ecological concepts.

Schmid-Hempel identifies gaps in our knowledge about parasites in social insects and uses models to develop new questions for future research. In addition, issues that are usually considered separately--such as division of labor, genetics, immunology, and epidemiology--are placed in a common framework to analyze two of the most successful adaptations of life: parasitism and sociality. This work will appeal not only to practitioners in the fields of behavioral ecology and sociobiology, but also to others interested in host-parasite relationships or in social organisms, such as apiculturists struggling to overcome the problems arising from mite infestations of honeybee colonies.

                                                Book Description

Presents an integrated account of modern developments in energy methods for studying free boundary problems in PDEs. The theory presented has particular relevance to a number of physical applications, including heat conduction, surface and underground water flow, filtration through porous media, flows of non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, and semiconductors. The work is divided into two parts: An exposition of the methods of several general classes of nonlinear equations and systems and applications to the theory. Of interest to applied mathematicians and graduate students whose research is in partial differential equations, nonlinear analysis, and continuum mechanics. Applications to a number of different problems arising in continuum mechanics (fluid dynamics) are presented making this book of equal interest to physicists and engineers.

The history of this book is interesting. Charles Colcock Jones compiled these folktales during the late 19th century. He developed much of his compilation based on the memory of stories that he heard as a youth growing up in the Deep South. He had a good ear for the Gullah creole, but the book shouldn't been seen as a completely accurate rendition of the language. The book is now reissued with an excellent introduction to Gullah culture and Jones' original compilation work. The stories, themselves, are really interesting, entertaining, and poignant to read. With a careful reading, the reader develops a greater familiarity with Gullah, and the stories becomes a resource for appreciating the beauty of Gullah. In this way, the stories and the Gullah speech interanimate each other.

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection of Tales and Interesting Historical Document.......2001-07-06

This is a collection of dozens of folktales culled from the Gullah tradition. They are mostly from the mid to later part of the 19th century from the coastal lowlands area of Georgia. The hundred + year-old tales are transcribed in a dialect, but they shouldn't be considered authentic renditions of the Gullah creolized language. The book has a great introduction that explains how Jones came to compile the work and write other books on a range of subjects. The dialect of the stories take a while to understand, but the glossary at the end of the book helps explain unfamiliar words. The stories are really good ones, and it is great to see this important book in print.

A must for study of the Gullah culture of the Southern Atlantic states. It is wonderful that the University of Georgia press reprinted Jones's 1888 collection.

While on retreat in Ireland, a corporate consultant, who also leads sacred site tours, met a Leprechaun with an urgent message for humanity: "Humans are harming our own environment and theirs." With charming style and humor, Ms. Helliwell recounts the instructions from the Leprechaun on how humans can interact with elemental beings to heal the Earth, as well as revealing the fascinating relationship she developed with this delightful fellow. At first you won't believe it ... then you will!

According to the Leprechaun, members of the elemental race are now seeking to link with and become co-creators with committed human beings who have (or wish to develop) both belief in the elemental kingdom and the reverent desire to assist nature in the healing of the earth. This book introduces humans to the means by which we can meet and work with elementals, individually, on an ongoing basis.

I just couldn't believe her story. I do believe in nature spirits and such. Her story sounds much like "faerie fiction" you read with a little sprinkle of fundamental truths of nature consciousness thrown in. There are much better books dealing with devas and nature consciousness out there. If the story is really true, she may have had an enlightening experience with nature consciousness but it is heavily tarnished with her own bias, beliefs, prejudices, etc.. so that the story sounds untrue. There are better books out there. Try Penny Kelly's, "The Elves of Lily Hill Farm" or one by Machaelle S. Wright.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I accept that elementals are real and believe that they assist the planet in very beneficial ways. These beings exist on a different realm and dimension than humans, which is why most of us can't see them so readily. The author is fortunate to have the ability to see and perceive these beings and tells a wonderful and fascinating story of her encounters with them. She also offers ways for others to make a connection and work with elementals as well as guidelines for manifesting.
When my daughter was 4 she saw a 12 inch gnome or elf-like being in my bedroom. I dismissed her story then, but now, 16 yrs later she's reiterated her encounter and stands by her story.
Read this book with an open mind and don't be too quick to dismiss its validity. Enjoy!

I have learned much from the teachings of Abraham via Jerry & Esther Hicks, enjoyed Rhonda Byrne's movie "The Secret," and love my daily messages from the Universe via Mike Dooley. These people taught me a great deal about how to manifest my heart's desires, but none were as much fun and as delightful as Tanis Helliwell's "Summer with the Leprechauns."

A month ago, we moved onto a piece of property that feels different, somehow. It feels alive in a way I've never experienced before, and I have felt a sense of curiosity and a desire to commune with that "aliveness." This book is going to help me do just that.

I ABSOLUTELY loved this book! It is enchanting from start to finish and teaches so much about the elemental realms. It is also recommened by Doreen Virtue for incarnated elementals, but even if you're not one and have an intrigue for these realms you will adore it! It is much better than the Elves of Lily Hill Farm, which is worth reading too, but not as good as this one.

This was a lovely book that confirmed my own belief system since my childhood. I read this book outside on the patio each morning and felt the magic and the information the author was trying to convey. We all need to feel one with the planet and take better care of it. I've even started to leave a little cream in a shell on the patio table for the little 'uns!

                                                  Book Description

Traditionally seen as a master of domestic politics, Lyndon Johnson is frequently portrayed as inept in foreign relations, consumed by the war in Vietnam, and unable to provide vision or leadership for the Western alliance. In this persuasive revisionist history, Thomas Alan Schwartz takes issue with many of the popular and scholarly assumptions about the president seen as the classic "ugly American."

In the first comprehensive study of Johnson's policy toward Europe--the most important theater of the Cold War--Schwartz shows a president who guided the United States with a policy that balanced the solidarity of the Western alliance with the need to stabilize the Cold War and reduce the nuclear danger. He faced the dilemmas of maintaining the cohesion of the alliance, especially with the French withdrawal from NATO, while trying to reduce tensions between eastern and western Europe, managing bitter conflicts over international monetary and trade policies, and prosecuting an escalating war in Southeast Asia.

Impressively researched and engagingly written, Lyndon Johnson and Europe shows a fascinating new side to this giant of twentieth-century American history and demonstrates that Johnson's diplomacy toward Europe deserves recognition as one of the most important achievements of his presidency.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars A Texan with a sense of humor.......2005-12-21

Complaining bitterly to Dean Acheson about the public affection that had surrounded John Kennedy and the coolness toward him, Lyndon B. Johnson wondered aloud why people didn't like him. "Mr. President," Acheson replied, "you're not a very likeable man."

Contrary to Acheson's opinion, shared by most contemporaries and by many subsequent historians, Johnson emerges from this thoroughly researched and well-crafted study, not only as a shrewd politician, an able negotiator and a skillful foreign-policy leader, but also as an almost likeable person.

Schwartz finds that LBJ, after he settled into office, became "an astute and able practitioner of alliance politics," one who developed a keen understanding of the perspectives and preoccupations of European leaders and who dominated the foreign policy process. His policy toward Europe, the author writes, was "one of the most important achievements of his presidency." Schwartz unravels a series of complex negotiations-over arms control, the future of NATO, a Multilateral Force, and international economic issues-, and asserts that LBJ, determined to combat nationalism and unilateralism, effectively pursued his vision of a further integration of Europe and a relaxation of cold war tensions.

What makes Johnson an engaging character are the many quips and axioms of popular wisdom that he brought to a foreign policy realm traditionally dominated by soft-spoken diplomats and cosmopolitan personalities. When his advisors reminded him that America was committed to the creation of a Multilateral Force and had to find a compromise even though the Europeans didn't really want it, Johnson proposed to drop the idea altogether by remarking: "While you're trying to save face, you'll lose your ass." This Texan brought up in a German-American community developed a good friendship with Chancellor Eckard but advocated the following course of action toward his ally: "There's only one way to deal with the Germans. You keep patting them on the head and then every once in a while you kick them in the balls".

He resisted the advice to react strongly to the public attacks by de Gaulle by remarking that he didn't want to get into a "pissing match with the French" and, commenting on de Gaulle's decision to exit NATO's integrated defense system and have American troops evacuate France, noted soberly: "When a man asks you to leave his house, you don't argue; you get your hat and go." He also brought fresh ideas to international economic policy debates, bringing the Kennedy Round to completion and salvaging the Bretton Woods system, although he rarely talked publicly about those issues - he once told John Kenneth Galbraith that "making a speech on economics is a lot like pissing down your leg: it seems hot to you, but it never does to anyone else."

Indeed, Schwartz makes the case that LBJ's gut feelings and instinctive understanding of power politics often trumped the judgment of more experienced foreign policy experts and made him a natural leader of the Atlantic alliance. The book opens with a reference to Lyndon Johnson as "the Ugly American" and concludes with a quote from Charles de Gaulle, who once said that "Roosevelt and Kennedy were masks over the real face of America. Johnson is the very portrait of America. He reveals the country to us as it is, rough and raw." The quote wasn't intended as a compliment, but may be taken as one.

5 out of 5 stars "Lyndon Johnson and Europe".......2003-11-06

Professor Schwartz has taken a balanced, even-handed approach towards the presidency of Lyndon Johnson. The result is a thoroughly researched accout of one of the worst- and best- periods in American history. Professor Schwartz aptly describes Johnson's reputation as the "Ugly American" and "quintessential provencial," an ethnocentric with no taste for foreign affairs. However, Professor Schwartz also extensively discusses Johnson's effective diplomatic strategy and role in Europe at a time when the early turbulent years of the Cold War began to close, and there was a criticalneed for a more permanent, lasting policy.
To be frank, this book basically accomplishes a miracle. It is extraordinarily well-researched, with a complete framework of domestic, foreign and social issues examined for each country examined, so that any historian would be satisfied. Yet, the language and clear communication make Johnson's presidency come alive for every reader. The language is rich and colorfu, with "cigar chomping" Ludwig Erhard and "mercurial" Khruschev.
A different picture of Johnson, one that is much more well-rounded and balanced, emerges from "Lyndon Johnson and Europe". It truly is a fantastic read!

5 out of 5 stars "Lyndon Johnson and Europe": An Important Reappraisal.......2003-07-14

"Lyndon Johnson and Europe" provides a fresh reassessment of Johnson's foreign policy. Thoroughly researched and clearly written, "Lyndon Johnson and Europe" uses solid historical analysis to tear down the notional, knee-jerk response that Johnson's presidency put the U.S. in a foreign policy funk. Schwartz also avoids overstating his point. Johnson was not perfect, but, like every President, he worked within the international context in which he found himself. In Johnson's case, Schwartz provides enough evidence to show that given the circumstances, Johnson actually enjoyed a good measure of success. On one level, Schwartz's work is an academic revisionist history of Johnson's foreign policy with Europe, attractive in and of itself. But more broadly it reads as a diplomatic/political history of America, its friends, and its foes, during the turbulent 1960s. Easily forgotten cross-Atlantic spats (the Multilateral Force, France's break with NATO, the Kennedy Round, Prague Spring, et al.) all spring back to the relevancy that they held during Johnson's presidency through Schwartz's skilled hand. Schwartz's ability to capture the big picture while proving his point make this book not only an important reappraisal of Johnson's foreign policy, but also of great use to every student of American history, politics, and diplomacy.

I found "Lyndon Johnson and Europe: In the Shadow of Vietnam" to be insightful and relevant to U.S. policy toward Europe. In light of this last conflict over war in Iraq, I believe Mr. Schwartz provided a thought-provoking narrative of a previously unknown and volitile time in U.S. politics. Lyndon Johnson was brought to life skillfully and with obvious attention to detail. I would highly recommend this book, not only for students and history buffs, but for everyone who should understand more about Lyndon Johnson and his administration.

5 out of 5 stars A reexamination of Johnsons European foreign policy...........2003-06-06

A reexamination of Johnsonýs European foreign policy, that puts him successfully at the helmý

In contrast to the traditional view, Prof. Schwartz presents a convincing and extremely well written case that President Johnson successfully guided American foreign policy towards Europe. The book tells a story of a talented power politician whose astute understanding of his allies and foes domestic political environments, enabled him to hold NATO and the Atlantic Alliance together, while maintaining a viable global economic system and effectively moving towards détente with the Soviet Union.

The book weaves together the complexities of Johnsonýs personality and the dynamics of his inherited administration into a compelling and clear historical narrative shedding new light on the usual uninspiring vision of the president.

The book attempts to break away from the Vietnam bias of historical accounts of Johnsonýs foreign policy. However even for someone interested in Vietnam, this book provides many missing pieces of the puzzle and clarity of insight into the functioning of the Johnson Administrationýs foreign policy that are invaluable in understanding the era.

                                                  Well worth the read!

Using documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, recently opened archival collections, and interviews with the actual participants, Immerman provides us with a definitive, powerfully written, and tension-packed account of the United States' clandestine operations in Guatemala and their consequences in Latin America today.

This is a good, factual balanced account which brings to bear all the relevant facts and leaves out any ideological bias. It's also very well written and makes for an easy read.

4 out of 5 stars The harsh reality of American Policy of Intervention.......1998-05-26

The CIA in Guatemala offers the reader a compeling and shocking truth regarding the involevement of the American government in third-world country. Immerman relates in detail how the CIA and United Fruit magnates paint the guatemalan flag red and declare the country communist because they misinterpreted Agrarian Reform as a direct threat to "National Security." Boldly told, the reader finds himself amist a sea of revelations and a little confusion as the story unfolds, but it is only natural for a book of this nature. Immeran has done a wonderful job explaining foreign and political intervention about the american titan otherwise know as the "Gobierno Gringo." A marvelous account of past events are exposed after years of being witheld by the CIA as classified documents. I invoke anybody with an interest in politics, governmet intervention or just to inderstand how foreign interests dictate a small nation by placing puppet presidents to do their bidding to read this book.

                                                    3 out of 5 stars a fact-filled disappointment.......1998-01-27

This is a useful book. It is very well researched, extraordinarily documented and tells you essentially anything you need to know about the CIA's plot to overthrow the Arbenz government in Guatemala. Unfortunately, the writing is so turgid and dull it's difficult not to nod off in the middle of a particularly gritty section of history. I applaud Immerman's effort and the completeness of his overall work, but he really should have taken on a jounrnalist to help him get through the rough spots and make the book actually readable.

                                                        Book Description

Nearly 90 percent of the earth's land surface is directly affected by human infrastructure and activities, yet less than 5 percent is legally "protected" for biodiversity conservation--and even most large protected areas have people living inside their boundaries. In all but a small fraction of the earth's land area, then, conservation and people must coexist. Conservation is a resource for all those who aim to reconcile biodiversity with human livelihoods. It traces the historical roots of modern conservation thought and practice, and explores current perspectives from evolutionary and community ecology, conservation biology, anthropology, political ecology, economics, and policy. The authors examine a suite of conservation strategies and perspectives from around the world, highlighting the most innovative and promising avenues for future efforts.

Exploring, highlighting, and bridging gaps between the social and natural sciences as applied in the practice of conservation, this book provides a broad, practically oriented view. It is essential reading for anyone involved in the conservation process--from academic conservation biology to the management of protected areas, rural livelihood development to poverty alleviation, and from community-based natural resource management to national and global policymaking.
