A Phenomenal Treatise.......2006-11-17

Kleinert's work is NOTHING short of phenomenal.
After reading Feynman(+Hibbs) this is the text to follow up.

Sadly the second edition which is in print contained MANY typos.
The third edition fixes much, if not all; it also has added many new topics of various interest.

The core physics remains as solid, and even clearer than the previous editions.

Without casting aspersions on the presentation:
Make no mistake; this is no comic book.
You will suffer, scrape your gyri, and bruise your ego, but will be justly rewarded for your effort in study.

Consider this an unqualified recommendation.

This is the third, significantly expanded edition of the comprehensive textbook published in 1990 on the theory and applications of path integrals. It is the first book to explicitly solve path integrals of a wide variety of nontrivial quantum-mechanical systems, in particular the hydrogen atom. The solutions have become possible by two major advances. The first is a new euclidean path integral formula which increases the restricted range of applicability of Feynman's famous formula to include singular attractive 1/r and 1/r2 potentials. The second is a simple quantum equivalence principle governing the transformation of euclidean path integrals to spaces with curvature and torsion, which leads to time-sliced path integrals that are manifestly invariant under coordinate transformations.

In addition to the time-sliced definition, the author gives a perturbative definition of path integrals which makes them invariant under coordinate transformations. A consistent implementation of this property leads to an extension of the theory of generalized functions by defining uniquely integrals over products of distributions.

The powerful Feynman-Kleinert variational approach is explained and developed systematically into a variational perturbation theory which, in contrast to ordinary perturbation theory, produces convergent expansions. The convergence is uniform from weak to strong couplings, opening a way to precise approximate evaluations of analytically unsolvable path integrals.

Tunneling processes are treated in detail. The results are used to determine the lifetime of supercurrents, the stability of metastable thermodynamic phases, and the large-order behavior of perturbation expansions. A new variational treatment extends the range of validity of previous tunneling theories from large to small barriers. A corresponding extension of large-order perturbation theory also applies now to small orders.

Special attention is devoted to path integrals with topological restrictions. These are relevant to the understanding of the statistical properties of elementary particles and the entanglement phenomena in polymer physics and biophysics. The Chern-Simons theory of particles with fractional statistics (anyons) is introduced and applied to explain the fractional quantum Hall effect.

The relevance of path integrals to financial markets is discussed, and improvements of the famous Black-Scholes formula for option prices are given which account for the fact that large market fluctuations occur much more frequently than in the commonly used Gaussian distributions.

The author's other book on `Critical Properties of f4 Theories' gives a thorough introduction to the field of critical phenomena and develops new powerful resummation techniques for the extraction of physical results from the divergent perturbation expansions.

So a little background on Kleinert: feynman could NOT solve the schrodinger equation with the path integral and kleinert, using some group theoretical methods did. or so that's what i was told.

His book reflects that. This book is full of interesting facts that arent elsewhere.

Kleinerts book "Path Integrals in Quantum Mechanics, Statistics, and Polymer Physics" presents the reader with a very complete and very thorough discussion of path integration. The book offers such a wealth of topics,it becomes straightforward to select material, both for advanced undergraduate as well as graduate courses in theoretical physics.

Many, many issues dealt with in this volume have appeared here for the first time, such as the inclucion of the quantum mechanics of the hydrogen atom through path integrals. This book is a major step towards bringing this approach to quantum physics onto the same educational footing as the Schrödinger equation that standard texts focus on. This book profits from the clarity and conciseness that is also a hallmark of Kleinerts scientific papers.

I would say this volume is highly recommendable for any student considering to major in {theoretical} physics, and an absolute must for any lecturer in this area. Infact, I don't know of any excuse not to have your own copy.

A Superb Judicial Biography of Justice Souter.......2005-09-26

Writing judicial biography can be a challenging undertaking. How much of the judge's family history should be included?; what elements of the judge's pre-court career merit careful examination?; how extensive should the discussion be of how and why the judge was selected for the position?; and finally, how many of the judge's decisions should be reviewed to round out the picture? It is a pleasure to report that Professor Yarbrough has mastered the craft well, having written prior biographies of both Justices Harlan, Judge Frank Johnson, and District Court Judge Waring.

This an enormously valuable resource for understanding Justice Souter. It gives just enough attention to his family background and his pre-Court career. Many judicial biographies rush over the process whereby the subject is selected; not so here. This chapter is particularly of pertinent interest given the current Roberts' hearings. It is surprising to see Souter, labeled by many as the "stealth nominee," being far more candid with the Judiciary Committee than Judge Roberts in his testimony.

It is a particularly difficult task to discuss the judicial philosophy of a subject who is still on the court. In fact, Justice Souter will finish out 15 years in October, 2005. Once again, Yarbrough is up to the task. Much attention is devoted, and rightly so, to Souter's "common law" adherence to precedent. Over the 15 years so far, the Justice has developed a position of moderate liberalism (with the exception of criminal justice) on such issues as establishment, maintaining Congressional authority, limiting "state sovereignty," restricting the reach of the "taking clause, Bush v. Gore, and protecting the right to privacy.

The book is especially valuable in discussing Souter's interactions with other members of the Court, particularly as regards the critical Planned Parenthood v. Casey decision. Yarbrough here relies heavily on Justice Blackmun's now public court files to trace the maneuverings that occurred in this case. As I explained in my Amazon review of Linda Greenhouse's Blackmun biography, I am still a bit uncomfortable with the private memos of sitting justices being studied, even though they add enormously to the value of Yarbrough's discussion. His chapter on Bush v. Gore is also very strong in terms on explaining exactly what motivated various of the Justices in that case.

I would have liked Yarbrough to have included a bibliography, to compliment his extensive notes. He also apparently has made little use of the professional literature (such as law review articles) on Souter, although I was surprised to discover that there is not that much attention that has been devoted to the Justice. All the more reason to be appreciative of this fine judicial biography that admirably fills the gap.

This book examines three major areas of the multinational disarmament of Germany from 1920-31: the role and experience of British, French, Italian, Belgian, and Japanese arms inspectors working amidst an embittered German populace, the ramifications of the divergent disarmament priorities of the leaders of the disarmament coalition, and the effectiveness of united international policies backed by sanctions. These issues are examined within the overall context of the assessment of Allied disarmament operations in Germany. Foreign policy considerations of the coalition nations, such as the British notion of the balance of power versus French security concerns, and their effect on military operations in Germany, are discussed throughout the narrative.

The book breaks new ground by arguing that the international disarmament of Germany after WWI was a success, not a failure as usually perceived - in short, that arms inspections worked and that they reduced Germany's ability to pose a threat to European security. This has obvious resonance with the recent events in Iraq. The book fills a gap in the historiography of European diplomatic and military history.

Dr. Lisa Goodnight is NOT a political scientist. Rather, she is a communication professor, and is so employed at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond, Indiana as such. A blatant lie to "shovel" a biased "review" on others. I see that Dr. Goodnight has deleted her lying review posted previously. Or maybe her husband, Dr. Rademacher, did it for her. Shamelessly shameful the two of them.

Lean Left.......2003-08-26

This book has a very Left leaning liberal bent. If you just want the facts, this is not the book for you. If you don't mind just hearing one side of events (the left side) then by all means get this book. It is a commentary not a history book.

A textbook, with pluses and minuses.......2006-09-30

Wildlife Issues in a Changing World is a textbook on... wildlife issues! There is an emphasis on the United States, but there are a good number of international examples as well. I really like the chapters on the Evil Quartet, what is wildlife, and what are wildlife issues. As I use this book in my courses, I depend on it as a source of wildlife issue examples, supplemented with DVDs and videos (to "bring" wildlife into the classroom).

It is, in general, a hard book for students. I don't mean hard in terms of the materials. It is well-written, and rather easy to read. It is hard to use to study for tests. I tell students that it compliments the lectures, and doesn't repeat them. Students tend to complain that it has too many examples, so the "themes" that they are tested on are difficult to find.

I still find it the best text for my purposes for a general course with primarily non-natural resource students. I like it for its price as well.
