Book Description
Robertson Davies, one of North America's most beloved and critically acclaimed novelists, added an impeccable sense of style to all his diverse writings. Now, in this exciting publishing event, there is further cause for celebration with the publication of his selected letters. This volume for the first time gathers together previously unpublished letters that Davies wrote while at the height of his illustrious career.
In these lively and provocative letters readers will find affectionate letters to his daughter, witty barbs to hostile critics, as well as amusing and profound observations on the creative life. Correspondence with famous figures like Sir John Gielgud and Margaret Atwood offers fascinating pieces of gossip: "... and Salvador Dali, at the next table, raised his eyebrows and popped his eyes to such a degree that I feared they might leave their moorings and bounce about the floor."
Poignant, sometimes devilish, and always entertaining, these wonderful letters give a rarely seen portrait of the private Davies.
Customer Reviews:
For Your Eyes Alone by Robertson Davies.......2006-02-12
Robertson Davies was 82 years old when he died on 12-2-1995 from
a leaky heart and terminal pneumonia. He is one of Canada's most
famous writers of belles lettres literature having multiple nominations for the Nobel Prize.
Some of his best works are Dr. Canon's Cure, What's Bred in the Bone, Jezebel and The Merry Heart. He had 26 honorary degrees. Memorable quotations from his letters are as follows:
- " Writers are an extremely contentious group and old age
does not make them any more peaceful."
- "Sampson should have stayed away from the Barber Shop. "
- "The great leap for writers is in their 40s. They either
gain new energy or go to pot. "
- "Ye have the poor always with you. " Jesus Christ
A strength of this work is that it shows the deeply personal
side of Robertson Davies. He wrote many letters and discussed
small talk and consequential issues in most of them. The book
is well worth the price for the huge value of the letters
contained . The letters are written with considerable wit
and satire. The humor is not unlike British journalistic satire. When you've finished reading this book, it will become apparent why the author is so sorely missed.
Gems galore.......2002-08-14
It's startling how thoughtful, evocative and just plain funny a man can be in writing his regular correspondance. Makes you want to be a prolific letter-writer yourself. Makes you wish he were still alive so that you could respond to some of the more inflammatory things he says.
I don't think I'd realized quite how much Davies was concerned about the "place" of Canadian Literature in the world literature canon; it comes out so plainly here.
Judith Skelton Grant, who edited the letters, is mentioned repeatedly in them -- Davies apparently was amused, worried and sometimes just ticked off about the biography she was writing of him.
An Opportunity For More Insight.......2002-01-30
I enjoyed this book's organization, which was established by the various books Davies had written over the last part of his career. While not Canadian, and thereby somewhat in the dark regarding some of the letters' recipients, I found the editor's annotations brief but helpful. The main draw here is the author's distinctive voice, which emerges within the various letters.
I am not usually interested in reading compilations of letters. Here, however, I find a volume that constitutes a diversion from my other reading, a book which I can pick up from time to time and garner ideas for those brighter days when I re-read a Davies' novel. For this end, I found the collection worthwhile!
Book Description
Robertson Davies brought a great sense of style to everything he wrote. Whether it was a letter to his daughter (“Love from us both, Daddy”) or a formal letter to the editor disembowelling a hostile reviewer that concludes humbly (“I am content to remain, Yours, writhing in deserved ignominy…”), he wrote with care, with zest, and in a clearly distinctive voice.
Since these letters written by Davies have been selected from the years when he was at the height of his fame, the recipients range widely, from Sir John Gielgud to Margaret Atwood, and from Greg Gatenby (“You are a merciless man and God will punish you in the next world”) to his publishers abroad. Naturally, like all the best letters, they contain fascinating gossip: “…and Salvador Dali, at the next table, raised his eyebrows and popped his eyes to such a degree that I feared they might leave their moorings and bounce about the floor.”
The title of the book comes from a confidential letter to Jack McClelland and hints at the secrets to be learned from these letters. This “over the shoulder” look at his private correspondence shows us Davies in a variety of roles: as an old friend consoling Horace Davenport on the loss of his son; as a university administrator bewailing the miseries of fundraising; as a keen theatre-goer writing a letter of congratulations to an actor after a fine performance; as a professional writer advocating fair rates for authors to a cabinet minister; as a husband constructing a handwritten circular card to convey loving birthday greetings to his wife; as a bearer of health-giving good cheer to an ailing friend; and as a novelist struggling with his new books, and admitting to his doubts about them.
The letters are frequently testy, tart, and not always “politically correct.” Among those who felt his sting are Judith Skelton Grant, his biographer, and Douglas Gibson, his publisher, but other, more deserving, targets are suitably chastised. And whether they are funny, moving, or thought-provoking, these private letters provide a new look at the private Davies, revealed in his own vigorous words.
Book Description
The impact of anorexia nervosa on families can be devastating. Daniel Becker combines the innocent recollections of his childhood with the insightful observations of a mature adult in this story of his mother's 30-year obsession with food and her eventual death from anorexia nervosa. He provides an intimate portrayal of how he, his father, and his two brothers each struggled to balance their loyalty to Mom against the increasing awareness that only by separating from her could they ensure their own survival.
Beginning with his earliest memory of her packing a suitcase to leave for the first of many hospitalizations, Daniel must reconcile his love for her with her repeated absences and bizarre behaviors. Part cautionary tale and part exploration of how a person with an eating disorder affects their family members, this biography is valuable reading for individual sufferers, their families, and those who treat them.
Customer Reviews:
A sad but hopeful tale of a boy growing up in a dysfunctional family..........2006-07-31
This is a heartwrenching tale of a young boy whose mother, suffering from a then-rare disease called anorexia, spent literally years institutionalized with her illness. As a result, the author, Daniel, never formed the appropriate bonds with her and other members of his family. The focus was always on his mother and her illness, which no one understood. While I found Daniel's perspective interesting and touching, I was left wanting to get into the Mother's mind, into the heart of her anorexia to understand more about this baffling disease. I also suffer from this "mean disease," and I have a son who is young. I will carefully try to avoid making the same mistakes Daniel's mother made; luckily, great strides have been made both in psychiatry and in eating disorder treatment since Daniel's mother was in "treatment". While this is a good read for anyone who has a loved one suffering from anorexia, it is frustratingly sparse in any explanations for the disease itself, focusing instead on the devastating effects on the immediate family. If you are an ED sufferer, read with caution...this tale is very guilt-inducing.
An Important Contibution to the Literature.......2005-10-20
Daniel Becker makes an invaluable contribution to the literature regarding families impacted by Anorexia. His is a very readable story that will surely help others tell about their experiences without judgement or blame. This Mean Disease should be on every psychotherapists bookshelf. Neither pathologizing the patient nor the family, Mr. Becker tells the story of a family's ordeal and best efforts to heal.
Recounts the starvation disease's impact not just on his mother, but on his entire family.......2005-10-14
This memoir of author Daniel Becker's mother, a survivor of anorexia nervosa, recounts the starvation disease's impact not just on his mother, but on his entire family. Throughout his childhood his mother was obsessed with food and the family secret of his mother's disease which influenced the entirely family. From Jewish and family rituals to his mother's feelings about her anorexia, THIS MEAN DISEASE offers a poignant chronicle by another family member other than the usual sufferer - and brings to life many family issues surrounding an anorexic family member.
A Great Memoir.......2005-10-12
This book is first and foremost a wonderfully written memoir. In the current field, filled with recollections of growing up in alcoholic, schizophrenic and other dysfunctional families, Daniel Becker's book stands out as a straight-forward story about growing up with an anorexic mother and it's effects on his brothers, his father and himself. Becker's mother was diagnosed with adult anorexia at a time when very few had heard of the word much less knew how to spell it. The author not only provides the reader with a great deal of information about the disease but writes about its consequences upon the entire family dynamic. Above all, this is an honest attempt by Becker to make sense of his own childhood as well as This Mean Disease's effect on his adult life.
A gripping memoir.......2005-09-28
Dan Becker's, This Mean Disease, is a stark portrayal of the consequences of his mother's long battle with anorexia nervosa. This gripping memoir, which reads like a novel in which the author becomes the leading character, is a must read for anyone connected to this devastating disease. The book is unusual because it comes from the male perspective, a viewpoint that Becker conveys in sometimes painful honesty. But This Mean Disease works on other levels of the human experience and will be of interest even to those who have been spared direct association with the mean disease. The author's strained relationship with his father, which begins with interactions that barely achieve superficiality then gradually deepen as they both come to terms with the illness and their feelings, will find a ready audience for fathers and sons who struggle to express deeper thoughts than predicting the latest pennant race.

Book Description
Analyzing the struggle by evangelical Protestants for the mind and soul of America in the decades before the Civil War, Johnson lucidly explores the nature of the evangelical message, the conflict of ideas within the movement, and the influence of these forces--both immediate and far-reaching--on American culture. American Ways Series.
Book Description
"Evidently, the time has come to describe and assess the shift and its effects on policies per se. And this book does so brilliantly. It takes stock of the relevant literature and also identifies significant theoretical issues as well as practical problems associated with public implementation in the new context of governance. Thus, the book is depicted as a state-of-the-art on public policy implementation"
--CHOICE
Bringing the major current insights in implementation research and theory together,
Public Policy, Implementation and Governance reviews the literature on public policy implementation, relating it to contemporary developments in thinking about governance.
The text stresses the continuing importance of a focus upon implementation processes and explores its central relevance to the practice of public administration. In light of the changing nature of governance, Hill and Hupe suggest strategies for both future research on and management of public policy implementation. Their basic approach is two-fold: firstly, to understand the process of implementation and secondly, to address how one might control and affect this process.
Re-exploring the state of the art of the study of implementation as a sub-discipline of political science and public administration, this book will be essential reading for students and researchers in public policy, social policy, public management, public adminstration and governance.

Book Description
Science, mythology, and conservation ethics are interwoven in this captivating and highly personal travelogue. It recounts how Jack Rudloe's lifelong fascination with sea turtles led him to journey to Central America and Malaysia to investigate the theory that magnetic forces help guide sea turtles in their migration, and to explore the Turtle Mother legend that shaped the attitudes of other, more primitive cultures. These ancient myths fostered a deep respect for sea turtles that helped to assure their sustainable harvest, in contrast with the ruinous practices of today.
Customer Reviews:
For anyone with a keen interest in marine wildlife.......2003-06-17
Jack Rudloe's Search For The Great Turtle Mother is one man's travelogue reflecting his lifelong love of sea turtles, an enthusiasm that led him to Central America, Malaysia, and other exotic places around the world in search of scientific knowledge of, and stories about, these marvelous creatures. Written by the founder and proprietor of the Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory, Search For The Great Turtle Mother covers everything from the hypotheses that magnetic forces help guide sea turtle migration; to myths and legends about the Turtle Mother that instilled some native cultures with respect for these grand creatures, and which enabling them to harvest the turtles without rampantly destroying their population. Highly recommended for anyone with a keen interest in marine wildlife, Search For The Great Turtle Mother is a welcome addition to personal reading list, as well as to school, and community library Wildlife Studies collections.
Excellent exploration of sea turtle mythology........1999-09-07
I greatly enjoyed this book. It was extremely interesting learning about the common threads of sea turtle mythology in different cultures. What was lacking was more balance from the scientific side. I would have appreciated more information on the biology and natural history of sea turtles.
A Wild Ride: Myth and Science meet!.......1999-08-14
I've been reading Jack Rudloe's books for years, and have always been impressed with his ability to meld scientific fact with personal reflection and the "big questions". And "Search for the Great Turtle Mother" is his most personal and mystical journey yet. Blending the details of his quest for the facts behind an old Miskito Indian myth with speculations about our destiny as a species, this is a heartfelt and deeply moving book.
