Fabulous asset for traveling foodies.......2007-07-03

This book, like other books in the Eat Smart series, guides the reader/traveler through the food history, best dishes, and regional favorites of the country. I loved having this while in Morocco, because I had a good idea what to order wherever I went. The book also gives you the phrases you need to both read the menu and order. It's simply an invaluable guide for those who consider food a major part of the adventure of travel.

I've been a fan of Joan Peterson's "Eat Smart" series ever since I discovered "Eat Smart in Turkey" and "Eat Smart in Brazil" in the 1990s. Now Ms. Peterson has come out with a new guide to the foods and foodways of Morocco, a country whose history is reflected in its richly varied cuisine influenced by nomadic Berbers, Arab conquerors, Sephardic Jewish settlers, and French colonialists. As the author states in the Preface, "What better way to get to know a culture than through its cuisine?"

This book is one of a type I was not familiar with: books for travelers who are also "foodies", that is, people for whom trying the local food is one of their main pleasures while traveling.

This book will let foodies explore Morocco's rich and unique cuisine in thier homes before leaving via descriptions of both the food and its context, and it even provides recipes to try first. Once in Morocco, there is a directory of regional cuisine, and a menu guide with transliterated Arabic names of dishes to help in ordering. I find Moroccan food some of the world's best and most varied, and this book makes it accessible to everyone.

I've traveled and worked in Morocco off and on for the last 35 years, and can attest that the recipes and descriptions are well-researched and accurate. Readers should enjoy this book, as a travel guide or as a 'virtual' trip to Morocco.

Not the best, but still good.......2007-07-23

Cecily's fifth book in the Gossip Girl series was a fun read, but not as good as the first four. In this book, Blair ditches her families' vacation to Hawaii to go to Sun Valley, Idaho, with Serena. Also going to Sun Valley is Nate with his new girlfriend Georgie, who still has problems because when she there she gets caught by the cops with Chuck Bass for indecent exposure, but Chuck's family bails them both out. Blair falls in love with Erik, Serena's brother, and Serena gets annoyed, but the two break up because Blair isn't ready. Back in New York, Dan gets an internship with the famous published company, Red Letter, but after a week he quits becuase his boss annoys him by making him send letters and get exspensive caviar. Vanessa's parents are in town and go to a bunch of art shows, at which one she mets Jordy, but nothing really serious goes on, and she finds that she still loves Dan. And last, Jenny leaves her boyfirend Leo, after she finds out that he is not rich and she doesn't like his secrets. This book was good overall, and still a good book to read, but it just wasn;t as charming as the others.

relatively decent. a bit on the wild side........2006-11-08

I found this book hard to read; or at least hard to read the entirity of it. I ended up skipping everything inside, with the exception of the chapters that featured Nate and Blair. Neither Dan or Vannessa can hold my interest, and Nate's 'girlfriend' is actually quite psycho. I could barely focus during the book, it didn't hold my interest like the majority of the other books did. I wouldn't reccomend it, unless you want to read every book in the Gossip Girl series. The vacation the gang takes is rather crazy, but why am i not surprised? Serena ends up naked, alone, and in the snow. Leaving Nate to find her and warm her back up. Blair almost loses it (again) to brother of Serena, Erik.

throw in a gay snowboarding team, and Chuck - and you've got yourself a mediocre novel with crazy sub-plots.

Gossip Girl in General.......2006-09-22

I find the gossip girl books to be very entertaining. They fit around the same area as The Clique (which are entertaining, but let's face it, the girls have stupid 'non-problems') only for an older set. All of the books live up to expectations of the rest. I think that all of the characters are interesting and the story line keeps you guessing and entertained.

This book is so bad! This is the fifth book out of gossip girl and alot of things in this book are so bad that I have to skip alot of pages. I don't care about Dan and Vanessa anymore. Too boring and even worse when Vanessa's parents show up. Nate's girl friend is too retarded and too unbelievable to believe, and the gay snowboarding team? Are you kidding me? Why does Chuck of all guys become gay all of a sudden? It doesn't make any sense! I hate the character Rusty and I really hate Jenny. Snooping on her boyfriend like that all the time and that's all that happens with her in this book. Jennys friend Elise and Dan kiss. That was really stupid. This whole book is stupid and makes no sense. I loved gossip girls until this fifth one came out.

Not the Best.......2006-07-03

I have been hooked on the Gossip Girl series since the first book and I have currently read up to the fifth, I Like it Like That, but honestly, I wouldn't have mind skipping it. I thought this book was a little bit predictable and boring. Jenny is my least favorite character because, is it just me or does she seems like she goes after guys that are rich and handsome? After she finds out Leo is "normal" she dumps him. It seemed to me that he had a nice personailty and that should have been enough. The last book I was so hooked on the Vanessa & Dan relastionship, but this one I was actually skipping the chapters about them. Blair & Serena have always been my favorites, and that is what saved this book. Their adventures in Sun Valley was the best part and never really was boring in my opinon. Also GG [Gossip Girl] saved this book as well. Her entries are always funny and interesting to look at. Some people say that Cecily von Ziegsar writes using profound words such as the "f" word. Well I have to say that im a teenager to and to be honest, that is how most teens talk. Cecily really captured the life of a teenager well with the stress on schools [im 13 and picking a HIGH school is tough for me, think about college], also sex and drugs. I know people that are much younger than Blair and Serena and have more experience with these things than all of the characters put together. And also family troubles, because every family has them right? Her choice of words are accurate and theres nothing wrong with that, and besides in the fifth book she hardly swears if ever, I wasn't paying much attention to that. Overall though, this book wasn't the best, but the series is!

Catherine Carmier is a novel set in south Louisiana in the mid 1900s. It is a story about race, education,and freedom. Jackson comes home after 10 years of schooling in California to find that this is not the home that he remembers. Conflicts between his Aunt Charlotte and Catherine Carmier create the major plot lines of the novel.Ernest Gaines did a great job of depicting Louisiana life during the mid 1900s. Good book, easy read.

Catherine Carmier is yet another view into the nature of life and living in the deep south during the mid twentieth century. The usual elements of race and religion are present throughout the novel, and Gaines masterfully manipulates these subjects to push the plot and characters forward.

The third person narrative tells the story of the impact the male character Jackson has upon his departure and eventual return to his home. Times have changed during Jackson's stint in college in California, yet some things always remain the same.

Though Catherine Carmier may not be life altering as some of Gaines' other works have been, such as A Lesson Before Dying, this novel is still masterfully crafted and is a credit to Gaines' style and brilliance. A great read and a treat to any who may wish to read it.

Gaines captures Louisiana culture to a 'T'. As someone who spends a lot of time there, the Carmiers, Jackson, Charlotte and Mary Louise ring true. HIs descriptions and elegant choice of words are just plain gorgeous. Wonderful classic.

As any reader of The River Why knows, Duncan is a master of the art of writing about fishing--which is also to say life, since the two for him are indelibly linked. But these essays deal with far more than leaky waders and rising trout. Part memoir, part activist treatise, My Story As Told by Water is Duncan's love song to wild places and the creatures which inhabit them. He also ruminates on the true meanings of "place" and "home"; offers a fable on the 1872 Mining Act, "the most anachronistic and devastating piece of 'corporate welfare' in the world"; and details how Montanans rallied to prevent a giant mining company from extracting gold near the Blackfoot River, the setting of the Norman Maclean classic A River Runs Through It. Self-indulgent nonsense.......2005-08-12

Duncan is a masterful wordsmith; this no one can reasonably dispute. But over the years, he has become so full of himself, so pretentious and self-important, that to me he is almost unreadable.

I give the book two stars because of a little bit of excellent fly fishing content, and because of Duncan's undeniable writing ability. But before you buy it, you should read Donald Miller's hilarious send-up of Duncan (whom he labels Trendy Writer) in "Blue Like Jazz." Don Miller -- now there's a guy who has something significant to say on metaphysical themes. Duncan is merely showing off; Khwaja Khadir indeed!

Stereotypical, obvious, pompus.......2004-04-03

Duncan's textbook rants are so predictable I found myself mouthing the next sentence before I read it. As someone who's work and life is submerged in environmental, water use, and preservation issues I find this type of stereotypical ranting more detrimental to the issues that concern me than most G.W. policies. Duncan preaches to the choir, but his preaching is so over the top it is a turn-off. While I agree with virtually every theme and policy he promotes, his pompus diatribes push me in the other direction. If this book were written 40 years ago it might strike a radical tone and inspire action. In these times it is merely a rehash of the new-age mumbo-jumbo that is so easy for the opposition to tear down.

This book will apeal to two audiences: new-age sheep, and right-wingers looking to bash environmentalists. The rest will find it harder to wade through than Columbia.

For those who are interested in the life and teaching of Henry Bugbee, Duncan's account of Henry's last days makes this book worth reading.

My Story As Told By Water by David James Duncan was a confusing and overly political way to express the author's love for water. HIs diliverey is good, but he should keep in mind that his readers are reading for entertainment, not to hear about our government's poor decisions.

When Colonel Theodore Roosevelt led his Rough Riders up the San Juan Ridge in 1898, it was one of the most daring exploits of the Spanish-American War. A Truly Unique and Fascinating American Family.......2007-01-29

Completely understanding TR is impossible without considering his children, or his own childhood for that matter. These are the foci of the "The Lion's Pride: Theodore Roosevelt and His Family in Peace and War." TR was deeply influenced by his father, a wealthy and generous, many would claim great man whose most glaring defect and regret was what amounted to a buy out of his Civil War service obligation. TR called him the "greatest man I ever knew." Yet, in many respects TR spent the rest of his life attempting to overcome and reverse this blemish upon the family record through extraordinary patriotism and service. Leading at the apex of conflict and danger was the duty of a great and privileged family. This credo was embraced wholeheartedly by his children, which makes for fascinating reading. While some would argue this compulsion became excessive and detrimental, the Roosevelt's had no regrets and curiously embraced their family tragedies in the midst of great pain. This phenomenon is particularly evident in the death of the youngest, Quintin while flying patrol over German lines in WWI. On the other hand, if you are looking for an in depth look at any one or more of the children this book will not suffice. Indeed, the early chapters focus on TR's life leading up to WWI, while the latter chapters are largely dedicated to his offspring's activities in young adulthood, particularly those related to the Great War. There is little regarding TR's close and often tender relationship with his children during their childhood in the White House or at Sagamore Hill. As a result, while I greatly enjoyed this book, I was hoping for more breadth and insight into the children's upbringing and their lives after TR's death.

Excellent distillation of Roosevelt's last years.......2006-12-06

Renehan's accounting of the last years of Theodore Roosevelt Jr. is condensed and fascinating. Mostly covering 1898 and 1910-1919, the book provides insight into the southern New York high society of the early 20th century. Famous names, including Vanderbilt, Roosevelt, Cowles, and Coolidge, parade across the pages.

Nuggets include the mention of Harvard in that time as a conservative and pro-military bastion (compared to today's institution fighting military recruitment in court), Woodrow Wilson viewed as an appeaser, a coward, and an appointer of bigots in his administration (in contrast to a reputation as being a visionary negotiator), observation by Gen. George Patton that Theodore's eldest son, Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt III, was a courageous commander- but no soldier (both father and son won the Medal of Honor...a feat perhaps not matched by any other American family), and the contrast highlighted between Kaiser Wilhelm's non-combat patronage of his sons (during WWI) and the former president Roosevelt's sons participating in front line combat. Another interesting fact: three of Roosevelt's four sons died in military service--one killed in action, one dead of a heart attack a month after D-Day and one day before he was to be promoted to major general, and one a suicide). The fourth suffered from the long term effects of severe war wounds.

Roosevelt is also revealed as a founding father of the original progressive movement...born out of the Republican party, no less. "Progressive" used to mean advocating sensible capitalism through the restraint of unlimited power of large corporations (through the Sherman Act) and the promotion of sound environmental policy and conservation. It also demanded the U.S. government uphold its main role--that of national defense. This is in stark contrast to today's "progressive" thinking--complete rejection of market economics and corporations, radical environmentalism, and pacifism. Roosevelt must spin in his grave.

All in all a great primer of the former president. Makes you want to immediately run out and read more.

A giant of a man with a giant family .......2005-05-10

This is one of the best biographies of Theodore Roosevelt that I have ever read. It is interesting when you read this book and compare the legacy of the Roosevelt family and the Kennedy family. This is just my own opinion but I think the Roosevelt have more personality then all of the Kennedy family which is strange considering that the Roosevelt's are more overlooked.

Roosevelt was in effect the first of the modern politicians but still elements of the old school.

He was arrogant, a jingoist, and bombastic. He was also larger then life and an honest man in his own way. He also made sure that two of his sons served with the ground forces during WWI. That is something that cannot be said politicians today.

State Constitution.......2007-07-31

After you read this book, get a copy of your state's Constitution so that you can start the other vital process and empower yourself - remember, the dismantling of this corrupt regime begins in your town, your city, your state. All of your real power is given to you in your state's Constitution. Holding officials accountable - that's the process we've got to start. Downsizing government - from local/state, and then federal.

Also, google Ron Paul.

...but that's all it is. The book makes a lot of amusing arguments as to why you don't need to pay tax and you may find it funny if you are a tax attorney (as I am), accountant, enrolled agent or any other kind of tax practitioner. Considering Mr. Schiff is in prison for tax evasion now, I'd consider this book to be completely bogus. A good laugh, yes; good advice, definitely not.

While I agree that Schiff makes some interesting points in his claims such as paying the income tax is voluntary, that 'income' does not include wages, that it is okay to file a zero 1040 return, etc., following such advice will be fine until the IRS comes knocking at your door.

And eventually the IRS will find out. The IRS (legally or not) has nearly unlimited power in this country to levy wages, seize property, or send you to prison no matter how right you believe your interpretation of the law is. Schiff has been to jail, Schiff is in court right now and may lose everything and face life in prison. As convincing as the material is in Mr. Schiff's book, his claims have not been held up in the US court of law.

Schiff claims our courts & government are corrupt. As corrupt as they may be, the courts are where right/wrong are decided in the US and they can fine or imprison you no matter how sincere or true your views on taxation are. Being correct in your view of the law does not necessarily win you lawsuits or hold you blameless in the eye of the court, as Schiff and others have learned. I am not saying the IRS or government is fair or I agree with them, but they make the rules and who says life is fair?

The only solution to me would be to simply leave the country if you do not like the IRS or our government. Many people have defended the points Schiff has before and have lost in court. Why Schiff insists on staying in the US and defending these points again and again despite his views on the corruption of the legal system and being imprisoned before is beyond me. Anyone who has read this book or any of Schiff's materials is strongly urged to do a web search for the words TAX PROTESTOR FAQ for more information on these issues before they make any commitment to follow his advice.

The Truth Can be Costly.......2005-08-24

Irwin Schiff is correct and amazon is brave for still having a link to this book still up. This book is banned material in all forums and this includes amazons selling of it. read the court order banning the book at www.paynoincometax.com . Schiff is under is prosecution (persecution is more like it) by the Feds because they of course want to keep us all slaves. And we are slaves no matter how you want to justify it. (paying a "fair share" is a socialist term) Serfs in feudal England were considered slaves and they got to take home more than we do now. The Federal Government operates outside the Law and the courts are clearly simply ignoring the facts. Go to his site and read the motions and decisions rendered so far and see for your self how the court behaves. There is of course one reviewer here who is clearly a Federal Agent. Do note that according to the Patriot Act, once you purchase this book, the government will know about it and you will be on thier hit list. So if you can get it through other means.

This book has been officially banned by the U.S. government! In doing so it has shredded the Bill of Rights and the First Amendment; "Congress shall make no law..."

What is in this book that scares the government so much that it does not want American citizens to read it? By what "right" does the government have in determining what we can and cannot read? The First Amendment is clear. I thought book banning was something that occured in Nazi Germany and Communist Russia. Perhaps Amazon.com will now have to sell copies printed in Mexico, Cuba or China and smuggled to the "Free" U.S.A.

The banning of this book should only encourage all Americans to get a copy and read it.
