Book Description
Known primarily for his ghost stories and mysteries, Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu was one of the most popular writers of the Victorian era. Many of his works were published anonymously, and he either owned or had an interest in four Irish newspapers, which served as an outlet for other anonymous pieces by him. This bibliography provides as comprehensive a record as possible of Le Fanu's works. It also includes a bibliography of books, articles, and dissertations about him. The volume begins with a short biography of Le Fanu, followed by a bibliography of his writings. This bibliography is divided into magazine appearances, books, anthology appearances, and manuscript sources. Entries in each of these sections are arranged chronologically. Annotations comment briefly upon these primary works, and annotations for anonymous works attributed to Le Fanu include the names of those who have assigned these writings to him. The bibliography of secondary sources is also divided into several sections, with entries arranged alphabetically by author. While most annotations are descriptive, some correct erroneous information.

Most young girls' experiences never involve hunting bearded seals on the ice, even within the Alaskan Eskimo culture. In Scott O'Dell's gripping novel, Bright Dawn is an exception. In her father's eyes, she became his son's replacement ever since her brother drowned. When Bright Dawn is 18 years old, her father, recently injured, insists that she take his place in the Iditarod, the famous Alaskan dogsled race covering more than a thousand miles between Anchorage and Nome. Unflinching, yet trembling in her mukluks, she faces her challenge head-on.
Bright Dawn proves herself to be a strong, courageous heroine--crossing rivers, mountain ranges, and vast stretches of frozen tundra--with her team of dogs, including the lead Black Star. While the rush of wind and relentless, blinding stretches of ice are exhilarating, the dangers involved make Bright Dawn realize that it's not only the race, but her life that she's entrusting to her team of dogs. O'Dell, author of the Newbery Award-winning Island of the Blue Dolphins, has created an intense, suspenseful, clearly written adventure story that's sure to capture the imagination of young readers and take them for a blustery ride. (Ages 9 to 12)
Book Description
"A splendid, vividly written adventure."
THE KIRKUS REVIEWS
Bright Dawn was a teenaged Eskimo girl. Black Star was her part-husky, mostly wolf, pet. Together they were about to begin the famous Iditarod dogsled race through the bitter cold of Alaska. Bright Dawn knew they would win, but she didn't count on the cold, blinding whiteout, the belligerent bull moose, or ice that could crack and splinter at any time. And she soon realized that she was not only depending on Black Star for the race, but for her life....
Customer Reviews:
A traditional Eskimo girl runs the Iditarod.......2007-04-03
The father of the Bright Dawn, the heroine of this story, is stranded on an ice floe while seal hunting. The sea becomes a terror to him, and they move from the Alaskan coast. He is asked to represent their new village in the Iditarod, and trains for it until an accident prevents his racing. Then Bright Dawn takes his place, with Black Star, her favorite dog, as her leader. No one from their town had ever finished the race. Bright Dawn runs into many hardships and dangers, but races well. She was the first to enter Iditarod, and also wins an award for taking care of other racers in trouble, even though it slowed her down. When she and her dogs are stranded on an ice floe, her father comes to the rescue. She finishes the race, becoming the first one from her village to do so.
Bright Star and her family are traditional Eskimos. There is plenty of Eskimo mythology and superstition throughout the book; Bright Dawn is portrayed as being true to her people when she relinquishes her skepticism (created by English influences) and decides to trust the old Eskimo gods, traditions, and talismans.
I thought the book was not one of O'Dell's better works. I was disappointed in the way he presented the Eskimos' beliefs, although I admire the way he portrayed their resourcefulness. I also thought the storyline was rather boring.
Black Star, Bright Dawn and Scott O'Dell.......2006-02-22
Bright Dawn is a teenage Eskimo girl who loves dog sledding. One day when her father was preparing to race in the Iditarod, a 1,200 mile race, he got so injured that he couldn't race. Of course while Bright Dawn was sorry that her father was hurt, she was ecstatic that she would be taking his place. She comes across many dangers such as the bull moose, a vicious moose that attacks the human and the dogs on the team. Bright Dawn also makes some friends including Oteg, an experienced racer, and a girl that she saves who later ends up quitting. At the end of the race neither Bright Dawn nor her dogs were tired of running. With Black Star, Bright Dawn's favorite dog, in the lead, they set off for home.
This book flows very well. Every sentence ties in to the next and every paragraph ties in with the next Scott O'Dell, like he often does, has a girl main character, natives that play important roles, and exciting adventures. This book is mainly about action and changes. His writing can put on a "film" in your mind of what's happening in the story.
If you have not yet read this book, than you should. I would recommend it to the children 8-12. It's a great story for animal lovers and adventurous ones. Adults might appreciate the story but it is clearly meant for the younger generation.
The Only One!.......2006-01-10
Once there was a girl named Bright Dawn. Shesa very brave girl! Also a very cute, adorable little puppy. His name is Black Star, avery good puppy. You would love him. This puppy has a star right in the middile of his forhead. Bright Dawn's fathera powerful well raised man. Justlike his daughter. A big exciting thing came? Its the Iaitarod race. A youg man says...."Get set,go"
If you adore a big exciting adventure. This is the book made just for you! And if you don't love adventure, too bad. just get up and go read! Another book. I love this book just try it.
Of corse i would recommed this lovely book. It is just awsome! If i were able to grade this out of 10*'s. Maybe a 9 would be ok.

Black Star, Bright Dawn.......2001-08-23
Bright Dawn was a teenage Eskimo girl. The dog was Black Star, part husky but mostly wolf and they were best friends. They were going to race in the Iditarod together as a team because her father had been injured and couldn't go through with it. So she trains for the Iditarod and finally the day comes when It's tim to start. Along the way they never expected it to be as cold as it was, a bull moos, ice that could crack and splinter at any moment. By the time she was halfway through the race Bright Dawn was not only depending on Black Star for the race, but for her life....
Black Star,Bright Dawn.......2001-05-05
This book is about a girl who was about to race in a one thousand-mile race. Bright Dawn,a teenage Eskimo,is her name. He was Black Star, the leader of the dogsled team. Bright Star had to fill in for her dad. He was praktising raceing and he fell of and he broke is sholder. When she was raceing a storm move in and it caused her to stop and get the snow of the doge's eyes. Right befor she finished she thought she had lost but she was in 2nd place. I like the book because it is about Eskimo's. I think the are smart, for the race's and igllos, they are cool. I liked it because she had to fill in for her dad.

Trust!.......2001-01-16
This book shows how much trust and dependence can mean in a matter of life and death. Bright Dawn has the chance to be part of the Iditarod dog-sled race, meaning she will face nature, and be on the edge of raw survival. This book changes not only the way you think, but the way you act because of the power of trust you can feel, just from reading the book. The only thing that I found I didn't like in the book, was that it was not full of turns and twists, sometimes you could tell what was going to happen. That didn't necessarily make the book bad, it was kind of meant to happen: it was wrote that way by the author. If you enjoyed this book, I would suggest Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George (all of her books are good, try a few!)
Book Description
This book reviews all the biology tested by the MCAT. It includes nine 30 minute exams in the MCAT format, and 135 additional stand alone questions. All 342 questions are in MCAT form and fully annotated. The book is illustrated in black and white, and in color. This book is expensive because it is the best MCAT biology review available.

Useful, Very Good.......2006-08-12
This was oe of my study references for the MCAT. I recommend this one because it has a lot of useful info that one needs to know for the biology portion of MCAT.
Another useful reference is "The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology:Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations (Topics:Origin of Living Things & Chemistry of Life, Structure and Function of the Cell & Energy Pathways, Reproduction and Heredity, Genetics) Volume 1 by Patrick Leonardi
This last study guide had wonderful questions/explanations that were quite comprehensive for the biology part of the MCAT.
cannot be better than this.......2006-06-01
This book is just awesome. You will not regret buying this book.
Wonderful preparation.......2005-09-08
The Biological Sciences segment of the MCAT contains the material that is least likely to have been comprehensively covered by the coursework of a typical undergraduate. While the chemistry and physics (and organic chemistry) elements of the test are all fairly similar to university syllabi, the broad sweep of MCAT's biology topics (biochemistry to anatomy, and selections from everything in between) makes it unlikely that any one or two courses could cover them all.
Enter Examkrackers. At precisely the correct level of detail, Orsay takes the reader through each part of the MCAT Biology curriculum, emphasizing the important elements, breezing through the minutiae, organizing everything so that it is easy to process and remember. I used virtually nothing apart from this book to study for MCAT's biology sections, and can say that never on the exam did I feel unprepared for a question, which, given the test, is all you can ask. The book might be less than ideal for someone wishing to learn these topics from scratch, but for a concise, helpful review, there is nowhere better to turn.
Good prep material will not discuss what is not on the exam.......2005-08-09
I saw this text as a readable, colorful supplement to cover bio material. My thinking is that this book does NOT go as deep as some of the other (Kaplin, Berkley, Princeton, etc) material out there - which is not a bad thing. In my eyes, some of the MCAT books out there are doing nothing more than rewriting the bio textbook I used in college - which I have anyhow. This text touches upon only the most applicable subjects for the test.
I now use the audio osmosis cd's to listen to the lectures while reading the charts and brief text in this book to study bio. While I think the book is pretty and a fast read I think the audio osmosis CDs are important to use with the book - but this is just my learning style. The audio cds really underline what IS and what IS NOT important to memorize vs. understand vs. recognize - while the text book is a little confusing in this regard.
Fun, absorbing, and effective.......2005-04-20
I really am grateful to EK for their books. I took PR and found that their materials gave me a great foundation (since I'd been out of school for 7 years...) But EK really helped me FOCUS on the things I needed to know. The Bio (as well as Physics, Chem, and Orgo) book is esp well written and you'll find that the writer's language reinforces the style of the exams. The color diagrams and directness of the presentation are fantastic time savers. Don't think it's "oversimplified" either. (I found that to be true w/ another review company who's materials were poorly written.) EK is no-nonsense with the info you NEED to know for the MCAT, and the mnemonics are great.

Book Description
Policy-makers and the public, it has famously been said, are more interested in the possibility of non-linear dislocations and surprises in the behaviour of the environment than in smooth extrapolations of current trends. The International Task Force in Forecasting Environmental Change (1993-1998) dedicated its work to developing procedures of model building capable of addressing our palpable concerns for substantial change in the future. This volume discusses the immense challenges that such structural change presents - that the behaviour of the environment may become radically different from that observed in the past - and investigates the potentially profound implications for model development.
Drawing upon case histories from the Great Lakes, acidic atmospheric deposition and, among others, the urban ozone problem, this discourse responds to a new agenda of questions. For example: "What system of 'radar' might we design to detect threats to the environment lying just beyond the 'horizon'?" and "Are the seeds of structural change identifiable within the record of the recent past?"
Meticulously researched by leading environmental modellers, this milestone volume engages vigorously with its subject and offers an animated account of how models can begin to take into consideration the significant threats and uncertainties posed by structural change.

Book Description
Originally serialized in The Red Book Magazine in 1922, The Old Maid is an examination of class and society as only Edith Wharton could undertake. The story follows the life of Tina, a young woman caught between the mother who adopted her—the beautiful, upstanding Delia—and her true mother, her plain, unmarried “aunt” Charlotte, who gave Tina up to provide her with a socially acceptable life. The three women live quietly together until Tina’s wedding day, when Delia’s and Charlotte’s hidden jealousies rush to the surface. Says Roxana Robinson in her Introduction, “Wharton weaves her golden, fine-meshed net about her characters with inexorable precision.” This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the text of the original magazine publication.
Customer Reviews:
"Girls are not always what you call decent.".......2004-02-08
As an Edith Wharton fan, I was delighted when I found "The Old Maid" on Amazon. I've read almost everything written by Wharton (she's one of my favourite writers). I asked myself how I could have missed this book.
The setting is "Old New York", and here, only a few families rule society. "The Old Maid" is the story of two cousins--Delia and Charlotte. Delia Lovell makes a good marriage when she marries Jim Ralston and passes over another unsuitable suitor--artist, Clement Spender. Soon she is Mrs. Ralston, loved and respected by her husband, and the proud mother of two beautiful children. One day, cousin Charlotte Lovell, who is engaged to marry Joe Ralston, begs Delia for her help. Charlotte mysteriously disappeared for about a year shortly after Delia's wedding--this was supposedly due to health reasons. Charlotte is now deeply and tragically attached to an 'orphan', Tina, whose origins are a mystery and cause for speculation. Charlotte tells Delia the truth behind her yearlong absence and begs Delia to help her keep her illegitimate child AND marry Joe Ralston. Delia makes a decision and steps in. Charlotte's child, Tina is brought up in the Ralston household.
Delia ostensibly becomes Tina's mother, and Charlotte remains the maiden aunt--always in the background. When Delia accepts Tina in a moment of generosity, she does not consider the ultimate outcome. Delia simply does not understand that Tina, with her shadowy social position, will be unable to marry 'one of her own kind.' And socially, where does Tina stand? Is she a poor relation or living proof of a shameful incident--best forgotten and not discussed? Delia's generosity protects Tina--but only until Tina reaches womanhood and she becomes suddenly as vulnerable as her mother, Charlotte. When Tina becomes an adult, the stakes change
In "The House of Mirth", heroine, Lily Bart is the fringe character who sits on the outer boundaries of good society, looking in longingly for a niche. Lily Bart is destined for scorn by the society she longs to belong to, and the illegitimate child, Tina, is also destined for such a role in "The Old Maid." Delia and Charlotte determine Tina's fate, and yet they each have personal scores that must be settled.
While "The Old Maid" is only a slim novella, Wharton skillfully manages to create fully realised characters in Delia and Charlotte. The characters and their motives become increasingly more interesting as the story develops. This copy of "The Old Maid" is published by the Modern Library and comes with extensive footnotes. Apparently, the novella originally appeared in serial form, and was later heavily edited for the collection "Old New York." This volume is re-created from the serial version of the novella--displacedhuman.
