"Develops and applies topological and algebraic methods to study abstract Volterra operators and differential equations arising in models for ""real-world"" phenomena in physics, biology, and a host of other disciplines. Presents completely new results that appear in book form for the first time."
Book Description
This updated and extensively revised edition of two key works brings to life the woman considered by many to be China's first feminist novelist: Xiao Hong (1911-1942). Set in the rural China in which Xiao grew up, these two masterpieces expand on many themes, including the plight of peasants and the role of women in society. With a realistic style that has been said to rival "Tolstoy's sweep, Flaubert's detachment and Ba Jin's compassion," Xiao gives us an unflinching, surprisingly lyrical, and often wryly humorous account of the difficult lives of these characters. This is an updated and extensively revised new edition.
Customer Reviews:
Peasant life is no fun........2005-11-03
This book gives an account of the lives of peasants living in a small village in northeastern China during the early twentieth century. It is roughly divided into two sections. The first section illustrates Chinese agrarian village life. Time is circular and marked by the passing of seasons, the harvest, and the cycle of life and death. Accompanying this cycle is a deep sense of melancholy and fatalism. The villagers are desperately poor and untouched by the greater world. They are plagued by famine and disease, and in the face of these crises they are helpless and resigned.
The second section deals with the effects of the Japanese invasion and occupation during the early 1930s. The raising of a Japanese flag, which the villagers comically believe represents a dynastic change, begins this section of the novel. The Villagers soon realize their error as Japanese troops enter the village and terrorize them. In the face of the Japanese invasion, the villagers remain fatalistic, ignorant, and for the most part, passive. The youth of the village do attempt to organize a small volunteer army called the Red Whiskers, but they are immediately defeated.
The characters in The Field of Life and Death are intentionally underdeveloped and represent archetypes. An exception to this is the character Golden Bough, whose story arc ties the novel together. Golden Bough is introduced as an innocent youth who, not so innocently, goes to the river to rendezvous with Ch'eng-Yeh. As a consequence she becomes pregnant and is obliged to marry him. Golden Bough is mistreated by her violent husband. He kills their newborn child. Following the Japanese takeover and the death of her husband, Golden Bough is forced to go to the city of Harbin where she is mistreated and raped. When she feels she can take no more abuse she returns home only to be persuaded by her mother to return to Harbin to make more money. Golden Bough then decides that she wants to be a nun, but even in this endeavor she is thwarted, as the nunnery is closed. The story of Golden Bough is a powerful representation of the plight of peasants and women in China. Her character also mirrors the troubled times of China herself.
Overall, The Field of Life and Death is a well-written and fascinating novel that gives the reader a palpable feel for life in Northeast China during this time. While it is often portrayed as an anti-Japanese novel, its political content is not the novel's most dramatic aspect. The Japanese are portrayed as only another misery to be added to the pile of miseries heaped on these forgotten people. This is best illustrated by Golden Bough's statement, as she tries to ascribe blame for her miseries, "I used to hate only men: now I hate the Japanese instead (...) Do I hate the Chinese as well? Then there is nothing else for me to hate." This statement gives the reader a powerful sense of the nature of peasant life in the face of poverty and war.
About the hardships faced by peasants of rural China.......2002-10-08
The Field Of Life And Death & Tales Of Hulun River is a revised edition of Howard Goldblatt's excellent translation of two classic works by Chinese author Xiao Hong (1911-1942), China's first feminist novelist. The ravages of poverty, war, and Japanese imperialism are unflinchingly portrayed in this memorable and vivid work. Highly recommended for personal and academic literary and Asian Studies collections, Lu Xun's original preface (in translation), a new translator's preface, and a revised introduction by Howard Goldblatt set apart this edition of eye-opening stories about the hardships faced by peasants of rural China.
Book Description
The relationship between a mother and daughter is often fraught-but never so much as during the preparations for a daughter's wedding. Who better to offer a fresh perspective on weddings than the mother of the bride? And who better to describe it -- the agony and the ecstasy -- than Ilene "Gingy" Beckerman, who's married off three daughters and remembers it all very clearly.
--The high cost of wedding cakes: "I could have had a lifetime supply of Entenmann's chocolate doughnuts!"
--Bridesmaid dresses: "What do five girls-one short, one tall, one buxom, one flat, one who gave birth a month ago-have in common? A bridesmaid's dress they hate."
--Mother-of-the-bride dresses: "I tried on green velvet. A Rodney Dangerfield line came to me: 'If that dress had pockets, you'd look like a pool table.' The dress had pockets."
--And, finally, the sight of her daughter walking down the aisle: "My daughter was Cinderella, Snow White, Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, and Jacqueline Kennedy. But better."
Gingy looks at the bride-to-be and sees the teenager who wanted Bo Derek braids, the little girl she taught to dance to the tune of "Me and My Shadow," the beautiful baby, the miracle she gave birth to decades earlier. And now, en route to the aisle, their relationship is tested in ways Gingy never imagined.
Beckerman simply and brilliantly describes the highs and lows of life with an adult daughter. What emerges is a poignant and telling story.

humor for mother of the bride.......2007-07-23
I got this book for my mom. The title caught my eye because she had a horrible time finding a dress for my brother's wedding and now she has to look once again for my wedding! She loved it and found it very humorous, basically read it in one night. The only thing I wished is that it would have had a checklist or something like that for the mother of the bride. Overall, great book!
Mother of the Bride: The Dream, the Reality, the Search for a Perfect Dress.......2007-07-05
What a great book to give the 1st time mother of the bride at the bridal shower. It puts things in perspective! I recommend they read it a couple of days before the wedding.
Survival guide for M.O.B!!.......2005-05-20
This book was great. It is written with humor and insight, and I probably would not have appreciated it before this adventure we call "being the M.O.B". It is definately worth every penny.
You'll laugh, you'll cry -- you know the drill =).......2003-06-18
This is basically an autobiographical comic short story, with wacky illustrations to add to the fun. I bought it as a Mother's Day present for my mom right after I got engaged, and we read it aloud together in our favorite spot on the front porch, passing the book when one of us was overcome with laughter -- or tears. Ilene Beckerman can really write, and she does it with devastating humor and tear-jerking poignancy as she explores -- from the front row view of the mother of the bride -- the fun, the fights, the work, the tears, the trials, and often the complete insanity that all contribute to the creation of a beautiful wedding. At the same time, she critically (and beautifully) examines the complex relationship between a mother and her daughter. This short little gem will help you remember the things you appreciate most about your mother, your daughter...or both.
A Great Gift.......2000-10-12
When my daughter became engaged, I got three copies of this book as gifts. I loved it so much that I have given away the two extra copies that I received to friends who will soon be MOBs!
The book is so real, so funny, so poignant. It succinctly summed up the relationship between mothers and daughters as it detailed the intricate and involved planning process for today's weddings. I loved the way Beckerman gave us glimpses of her daughter's growing-up years.
I felt every feeling the author was feeling --- I laughed, I cried, and I called my daughter to read portions to her.
And today....I found the perfect dress!!!

A really great perspective of the Korean war.......2005-02-14
This book offers a unique insight of the Korean War at its worst as seen through the eyes of an Orthodox Jewish Chaplain who shared the travails of the American soldiers at a most desperate time in our history. It is comprised of translations from the Yiddish, as it was published in the Yiddish Daily, The Morgan Journal, out of New York. The book has a fascinating introduction about the Korean War which in abbreviated form sets the stage for a true understanding of the depth, breadth, and tragedy of this conflict. It also gives a heretofore unseen insight into the thoughts and behavior of the Jewish soldier of that time. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about the Korean War from "the trenches". Original maps and clear writing make the information come to life.

Welfare moms are "the most hated women in America," says Cheri Honkala, a dynamic activist from Philadelphia who is profiled in the engrossing Myth of the Welfare Queen. As the American mood toward welfare turned mean in the mid-1990s and politicians worked to radically change who got benefits and for how long, Honkala used her considerable talents in guerrilla theater to fight bureaucrats on behalf of a rising tide of dispossessed women and children. She keeps the TV news spotlight on the homeless with a host of inspired acts: a long-term tent city for displaced families, the takeover of a church, a grungy encampment next to the Liberty Bell. Nonetheless, folks dispute how helpful such confrontations are. Odessa Williams, a resourceful, resilient woman who supports four grandchildren and then doubles that number when new troubles strike, is the other sympathetic subject in this tough, humanizing portrait of women on welfare by Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper editor David Zucchino.
Book Description
Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter David Zucchino spent a year sharing the lives of Odessa Williams and Cheri Honkala -- two "welfare mothers" in Philadelphia -- to gain an intimate look at their day-to-day existence. Odessa, supporting an extended family, exhibits almost superhuman strength and resolve. Cheri, a single mother, is a tireless advocate for the homeless. Zucchino beautifully portrays them as figures of profound courage and quiet perseverance, systematically shattering all misconceptions and stereotypes about these women and so many others like them.
Customer Reviews:
The Myth of the Welfare Queen enthralls reader.......2003-05-06
The beauty of this book is the simplicity with which it is written. There are not technical terms to maneuver around. It takes a very candid look at a world many of us will never experience. It shows the very human characteristics of single mothers on welfare. The book never gets boring because it reads like a story. This is a non-fiction piece with all the compelling attributes of a fictional novel. This is not just a light rainy-day read either. It forces you to look into the lives of these women. Zucchino describes Odessa and Cheri's horrible necessicities like dumpster diving and prostitution so flippantly, it makes you want to scream, "But these women shouldn't be living like this!"
EXCELLENT & ENGROSSING.......2003-01-16
This book is exceptionally well-written and compelling, not at all the dry type of prose normally found in other books of this type or on this subject. This book certainly opened my eyes and seriouslly challenged (and destroyed) many of my long-held perceptions of welfare recipients, especially single women struggling to support families. Odessa Williams, one of the central figures in the book, is a true gem - unselfish, loyal, resourceful, brave and inspiring. This book, like Odessa,is a "winner". Highly recommended.
Unbiased Journalistic View That WIll Make You Think.......2002-05-20
This is not the book to read if you are trying to make up your mind about welfare issues or reinforce the ideas that you already have. It is an amazingly unjudgemental look at the lives of those on welfare in the inner city that will at times make you raving mad, whether at the people who refuse to work with the system for the sake of their children or at a system that fails those who give everything they have to take care of children they only want the best for, and sometimes have no direct responsibility for (grandchildren, children they have taken in). It puts real situations and struggles in the place of the abstract idea of public assistance. Within the pages you will meet kindhearted, incredibly nonbitter people, like Odessa, who you will admire and, at the same time, long to reach out to. Those who you would pity for their horrible circumstances if only you could not tell from reading about their lives that they are far too good of people to need or want pity. You will also meet people who you cannot feel sympathy for. People you will want to just slap for their irresponsibility and for not putting their children's needs before their own whims. This book shows just how complex the issue of welfare is, and that a set of laws or policies is not going help some people who are just stuck between a rock and a hard place. It will show you that there is no typical welfare recipients, even among those living in one neighborhood. Though some of the people are unbelievably good , and some horrible individuals, it will show the many greys in between. It is a portrait of those suffering for the nation's view of the "Welfare Queen." Those with huge hearts and horrible circumstances infinity entitled to whatever they need to do the job that we would not want to (raising troubled grandchildren amd great-grandchildren with meager means like Odessa, or being the self-appointed guardian of the homeless like Cheri). It is also a portrait of those who stubbornly refuse to help themselves, and fully live up to the idea of the irresponsible, neglectful mother who rather hang out with different men and continue to get pregnant than think of her own children. This is not a book that will make up your mind, but it is one that will give you an understanding of why this is such a hard issue to even begin to think of any sort of solution for.
Strength of the welfare queen.......2002-03-01
This book brings about a huge reality check. You realize how much the typical "welfare queen" makes it all work. You realize all they have to deal with on a daily basis when most of us do not give a second thought to letting our kids go to the park. I thought this and Jonathon Kozol's Amazing Grace were so similar. They paint a clear picture of what it is like to live in a poor city, and having to deal with the everyday trials. Odessa is a strong woman and that shines through the book, she is a caring woman who is taking care of her grandchildren and her great grandchildren. Even though she raised her children, she continues to raise her grandchildren. She has amazing strength and an amazing way to make life for her children a little easier. I loved this book, and our class had the ablity to go and meet Odessa, she is a wonderful and admirable woman. This book will grab your attention and keep it. Once you read this book then go on to Jonathon Kozol's Amazing Grace. They will give you a new sense of reality. It will make you realize that no matter what happens to you, there is someone out there that has it worse than you in some way.
Unsentimental yet powerful narrative.......1999-08-17
David Zucchino has written an unsentimental yet powerful narrative describing life in the trenches of the welfare system. His recountal reminds us that we cannot disregard the urgency of poverty,as it affects all of us, regardless of our economic situation or our opinion of welfare recepients. Zucchino's attempt to deconstruct the myth of the welfare queen exposes many unsavory details about life below the poverty line ; trash-picking, sex for money, children left in charge of other children. This book requires that the reader step into the shoes of a desperately poor person, leaving behind moral judgments and uninformed opinions. The reader must also remember that Zucchino's intent is not to essentialize the lives of welfare recepients by focusing his record on a few women, but to highlight the insanity of the welfare system and its effects on disenfranchised individuals; the interminable red tape, the constant harrasment by bureaucrats, and the poor distribution of funds and materials. After reading this book, we should reexamine the ways in which we show our moral obligation to those who need help.
Book Description
What can Christianity as a tradition contribute to the struggle to secure the future well-being of the earth community? This collaborative volume, the third in the series on religions of the world and the environment, announces that an ecological reformation, an eco-justice reorientation of Christian theology and ethics, is prominent on the ecumenical agenda. The authors explore problematic themes that contribute to ecological neglect or abuse and offer constructive insight into and responsive imperatives for ecologically just and socially responsible living.
