Book Description

In Boardwalk Empire, Atlantic City springs to life in all its garish splendor. Author Nelson Johnson traces "AC" from its birth as a quiet seaside health resort, through the notorious backroom politics and power struggles, to the city's rebirth as an entertainment and gambling mecca where anything goes.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read and A Breath of Fresh Air.......2007-08-22

We've all read books outlining the history and politics of such places as Las Vegas, New York and Hollywood. This book takes on a topic that is very rarely given any attention, the birth and life (and seedy underbelly) of Atlantic City.

I first visited AC when I was a boy in the late 1960's. My mother (now 85) always regaled me with stories of how glamorous AC was when she was growing up. I could never reconcile that image of the city with the one I saw, that of stark urban decay on the one side and the gleaming casinos on the other. The book lays it all out, from the earliest days to the politics that brought gambling to the east coast.

I read the book on a one week vacation in Brigantine Beach, the beach town right next to AC. I found the book in a beach house that my father-in-law had rented and read it in about 3 days. I found it fascinating. It is strange to say of this type of book that I couldn't put it down but it was virtually the case.

The book has it all, history corruption, politics, do-gooders, sex/affairs, the mob, entertainment, bootlegging etc., etc.

I was not aware that the book was being considered as the basis for an HBO series but I will be sure to watch it if it materializes. Read the book, you'll like it.

3 out of 5 stars No World's Playground.......2007-03-19

I got interested in reading this book when it was recently announced acclaimed film director Martin Scorsese was planning to use it as the basis for a his new proposed HBO series.
Published by an obscure regional press, and written by lifelong Atlantic City resident and attorney Nelson Johnson, Boardwalk Empire is a rather dry accounting of the turn of the century creation and political shenanigans of this tourist Mecca. While the book traces the birth and growth of the city, its decline and resurrection with the introduction of legalized gambling, there is nary a mention of Steel Pier, Salt Water Taffy or Mr. Peanut.
It will be interesting to see how Scorsese breathes life into these historical characters and events. Someday a vibrant novel will be written about this fascinating beach city once touted as the "world's playground". Unfortunately, this book isn't it.

5 out of 5 stars From corrupt crime bosses, to the influence of Republicans.......2003-07-15

Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, And Corruption Of Atlantic City by Nelson Johnson studies the history, politics, and personalities (both good and bad), that shaped and influenced Atlantic City during the years of the twentieth century. Ranging from corrupt crime bosses, to the influence of Republican politics, to the present day characterization of Atlantic City as a haven for entertainment and gambling, Boardwalk Empire is an absorbing, informative, and at times startling chronicle of an American city. Boardwalk Empire is a strongly recommended addition to Political Science and 20th Century American History collections.

5 out of 5 stars A Shore Bet.......2003-05-29

I am pleased to be the first reader from Atlantic City to review this book. It goes without saying that it was of special interest to me. Throughout my life I have met several of the key figures in this book, so it was fascinating to learn more about their lives.

I enjoyed reading this book very much and would recommend it to anyone interested in Atlantic City. It was well written and researched. Nelson Johnson repeats facts when they become relative to another incident. This makes it much easier to keep track of the players and how one event or person influences another years later.

Johnson helps local residents understand why a unique racial tension still exists in this small northern city. This may not be apparent to readers unfamiliar with the area.

If I were to change anything about this book, it would be the last few pages. It ends with Nelson Johnson giving his opinion on the future of Atlantic City and how it can avoid its mistakes of the past. It is my feeling that this possibly belonged in a separate conclusion but not as the ending to the last chapter.

History buffs and political junkies will love this book.

5 out of 5 stars NO GAMBLE.......2003-01-16

I have been interested in this most amazing city for about 30 years now. I thought that I had nothing else to learn about the city until I read Boardwalk Empire. Thank you Mr. Johnson for bringing a lot of new information to light in a most enjoyable fashion. Once started, it was hard to put this excellent book to rest. I highly recommend this book to anyone remotely interested in urban America. This book is a sure thing.

      Book Description

      I am so scared.
I feel like I'm silently screaming for help
and no one pays any attention of tries to hear me.
      I can't control anything anymore.
It's all out to get me!

When Kim can't handle things, she eats. Then she purges. Sometimes she fasts. She knows she isn't as thin as the other girls on her gymnastics team, and she's worried that now, away from home for the first time as a college freshman, she won't be able to live up to expectations -- especially her own. Eating is the one thing she can control -- or can she?

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2007-01-06

Beatrice Sparks is the author/editor of a serious of "anonymous" teen diaries. They are meant as "warnings" to children. In fact, they are not based on real diaries and the only one that actually was, she used about 10% of the journal entries and added a Satanic theme which horrified the family.

Now I am aware that children should be taught such things as drugs are bad, teenage pregnancy is not preferable, don't kill yourself etc. However, I take offense when presented in this manner. Children learn best from the truth not extreme propaganda. I also take offense that many libraries (especially school libraries) list this book as non-fiction, when in fact it is a work of fiction.

      2 out of 5 stars Give me a break.......2006-11-30

This book only got 2 stars because of the fact I actually finished it, I don't usually finish books.
This book is so annoying. No one with a real eating disorder is that happy about EVERYTHING, she happy about her parents, and some guy, and school, gymnastics and life...if you're so happy then why would you need an ED? Plus there is no way to get to 75lbs by just bulimia, maybe there is, but not the way she was going at it. There was no account of excessive excercise either. And getting so hungry she ate dog food???? Give me a break!
It was an OK book until it got to her "recovery" she was just too happy about that too. Read Diary of an Anorexic girl, I mean most people will fight recovery. This book is just so pathetic, she sounds like a 12 year old girl not a college freshman. I in no way could relate to this girl and usually I can. Thank god the book was short other wise I would have completely wasted my time.

1 out of 5 stars The original James Frey .......2006-02-02

Brought to you from the author of Go Ask Alice... yeah, right.

This is probably not the first great hoax in publishing history, but I'm sure it's one of the most successful.

In spite of the fact that the actual source of this book has long been revealed and known, the publishing company continues to brazenly assert that this is a genuine document. It's as ridiculous as the continuing insistence that The Amityville Horror is a true story, too.

It should take any literate adult no more than one and one half pages to determine that this is neither the language nor the syntax of an adolescent/young adult.

It is a known fact that this shameless propoganda was the work of Beatrice Sparks, a Mormom activist who created an entire series of these books, in which children are destroyed by the evils of homosexuality, premarital sex, drug abuse, satanism, etc.

Without diminishing what positive impact this book, or any of the others, may have had on impressionable youth, and without condemning its good intentions (is anyone in favor of having AIDS?), these books are complete rubbish.

Like Mr. Frey, the intentions are not the point.

The point is that these books are being published as nonfiction.

      And they are lies.

3 out of 5 stars Kim: empty inside.......2005-10-17

In the book, the main character, Kim can't always take what is thrown
at her. She feels pressure to get a boyfriend and get into the right
college and compete in gymnastics. To help her feel better and in
control of her life, she eats and then feeling bad about it purges. Kim
sometimes feels that she is not as skinny as she needs to be for
competing in gymnastics. Her eating disorder gets out of control when
she leaves for college. When she gets to UCLA she feels very lost and
thinks the only thing she can control is her eating. During the book
Kim goes up and down with her eating. When she becomes sad, she eats
like she has been starved and then throws up. When she is happy the
throwing up pauses but not for long. When she can't handle something
food is her friend. In the book she struggles with fasting and
purging.,       The book is a little bit of a slow read but in the end you
will be happy about what she does to help herself. Sometimes you will
not be able to put down the book and others times you will think why do
I need to know this? It is the perfect book to take on a trip with you.
The book may  help you never want to become anorexic. The way the story
is told will make you want to help Kim more than anything in the world.
Kim makes it seem like everything bad is happening to her and she can't
take it. In the end you feel hope for Kim and you will be glad you read
      it.

      1 out of 5 stars VERY INACCURATE!!!!.......2005-08-29

AS A GYMNAST AND FORMER ANOREXIC/BULIMIC, THIS BOOK IS VERY INACCURATE. FIRST, THIS DOES NOT PORTRAY THESE REAL DISEASES.THE INTENISITY IS FAR FROM WHAT YOU READ IN THE BOOK.YOU HAVE NO TIME FOR BOYS,FUN,FAMILY,ETC. ANYWAYS,AT THAT LEVEL OF GYMNASTICS,KIM WOULD NOT HAVE TIME FOR ANYOTHER THINGS BESIDES GYMNASTICS. SHE WOULD BE IN THE GYM FOR APPROXIMATELY 6 HOURS, 6 DAYS A WEEK. THE ONLY REASON THAT THIS BOOK GETS 1 STAR IS BECAUSE AT LEAST IT HAS A STORY LINE. I WOULD NOT RECCOMEND THIS BOOK AT ALL.

              Book Description

Advances in computational mechanics can only be achieved on the basis of fruitful discussion between researchers and practising engineers. This has been achieved in the present publication, which contains all the papers presented at the first International DIANA Conference on Computational Mechanics. Nearly all papers show the results of calculations achieved with the DIANA TM Finite Element System.
Broadly, the book follows the line of research from the material level, via the element level, to the structural level. But it should be emphasised that much current research passes from one level to the other, and such an interaction is also reflected here.
              The following domains are treated:

                              Book Description

St. Philip Neri is one of the best-loved saints of all time. Known as the `Apostle of Rome', he set in motion a great renewal of Christianity at the heart of the Church's capital city during the 1500's. St. Philip's foundation of the Oratory began by stimulating young laymen to conversion, prayer, and apostolic works, and through them gradually brought about a reform of the entire Church, at all levels of society. St. Philip inspired many through his words, his miracles and his spiritual gifts, which show many similarities with other great saints such as Padre Pio and St. John Vianney.

This account of Philip's life, written by his disciple Antonio Gallonio soon after the saint's death, captures well his holy zeal for God's work in the face of a corrupt and decadent Rome; his great sense of humor, which he would often use to remind people of hidden spiritual realities; and the many extraordinary miracles and conversions wrought by St. Philip both during his lifetime and after his death.

This is the first ever English translation of the affectionate biography, published originally in Latin in the Jubilee Year 1600. Unusually for the time, it was written in chronological order; it also bears the original footnotes by Gallonio, in which he refers to eyewitnesses and makes comparisons with the lives of canonized saints, intending thereby to assist in the promotion of Philip's cause for elevation to the altars. Additional notes and a comprehensive index make this a most interesting and useful book for devotees of St. Philip, as well as a very readable introduction to the saint for those who do not yet know him.

This edition is beautifully illustrated with antique engravings of episodes from the biography.

                                              Book Description

Napoleon's Imperial Guard was one of the most famous military formations in history. The Imperial Guard could perform ceremonial duties as well as any, but it was primarily as an élite combat formation of the army that it excelled. Although it would expand to represent a considerable portion of France's military establishment, it remained Napoleon's personal guard and was accorded care and attention which set its members above the rest of the army. In this book, Philip Haythornthwaite examines their lives, organisation and privileges, paying particular attention to how their experience differed from those of the regular French line units.

                                              Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A snap shot of the Guard.......2001-08-04

Haythornthwaite has a long name, but writes wonderfully concise short books for the Napoleonic fan. "Imperial Guardsman" covers the various duties and formations of the Imperial Guard as well as looking at the more statistical information such as numbers, pay, equipment etc. The included color pictures bring to life the author's work which is, as is his custom, not so much entertaining as it is strictly informative. Very little detail is given over to the "glory" of the Guard, and much more attention is given to the hard facts about them. The work is short and so one will not get bored reading it. Haythornthwaite has mastered the art of conveying statistical information in this quick but incredibly informative book.

This book covers the confusing formations of the Guard. It breaks down the pay, uniforms and a history of the Old, Middle and Young Guard plus all the other units comprising this colorful corp. A very informative book with beautiful artwork.

Wasserman, Gary, Wasserman's Basics of American Politics Tenth Edition *\ This brief, user-friendly introduction to American government has been a long-time favorite because of its lively, no-nonsense approach to the core topics in the course. Using a dynamic game metaphor, the book covers 4 governmental and 4 non-governmental "players," as well as the constitutional "rules of the game." It ends by examining rival theories on who wins and who loses in the American political system. Written in a way that engages readers and offers them great flexibility, Wasserman's book covers all the requisite topics and focuses on current debates in politics. In under 300 pages, the reader will learn what they need to know and like it. For those interested in American politics.

Wasserman's Basics of American Politics, tenth edition is a textbook used across America to teach (indoctrinate) our children in government schools. This paragraph dealt with the hotly contested 2000 vote in Florida. Here's what Wasserman's has to say:

"In late 2000 the Supreme Court halted the counting of votes in Florida's exceedingly close presidential election. By stopping the count the court's Republican majority ensured that the Republican candidate became president. Despite the system of checks and balances, there was no appeal, no check on the results."

                                              Sorry --- wrong.

OK .. once again, let's set the record straight. The U.S. Supreme Court did NOT tell Florida that the votes couldn't be recounted. The Court ruled that if Florida wanted to recount the votes they could not simply single out heavily-Democratic voting districts and precincts for the recount. Florida determined that it didn't have the time to do a complete recount .. so the results were certified.

Now that you know more of the story, does the Wasserman's account seem to be fairly presented? Of course not! An accurate portrayal of the Court's ruling would not serve the left's agenda.

One more thing. The textbook says that there was "no check on the results." This, too, is wrong. Somehow the Wasserman textbook failed to mention that several organizations conducted their own recounts after the election --- full recounts --- and they determined that under any legal method of counting votes in Florida ... Bush won. I guess that's not important enough for a textbook on politics. Especially if that textbook is being used to indoctrinate our children in our government indoctrination centers.

                                                Book Description

"In the rain forests of the western Amazon," writes author Andrew Revkin, "the threat of violent death hangs in the air like mist after a tropical rain. It is simply a part of the ecosystem, just like the scorpions and snakes cached in the leafy canopy that floats over the forest floor like a seamless green circus tent."

Violent death came to Chico Mendes in the Amazon rain forest on December 22, 1988. A labor and environmental activist, Mendes was gunned down by powerful ranchers for organizing resistance to the wholesale burning of the forest. He was a target because he had convinced the government to take back land ranchers had stolen at gunpoint or through graft and then to transform it into "extractive reserves," set aside for the sustainable production of rubber, nuts, and other goods harvested from the living forest.

This was not just a local land battle on a remote frontier. Mendes had invented a kind of reverse globalization, creating alliances between his grassroots campaign and the global environmental movement. Some 500 similar killings had gone unprosecuted, but this case would be different. Under international pressure, for the first time Brazilian officials were forced to seek, capture, and try not only an Amazon gunman but the person who ordered the killing.

In this reissue of the environmental classic The Burning Season, with a new introduction by the author, Andrew Revkin artfully interweaves the moving story of Mendes's struggle with the broader natural and human history of the world's largest tropical rain forest. "It became clear," writes Revkin, acclaimed science reporter for The New York Times, "that the murder was a microcosm of the larger crime: the unbridled destruction of the last great reservoir of biological diversity on Earth." In his life and untimely death, Mendes forever altered the course of development in the Amazon, and he has since become a model for environmental campaigners everywhere.

"The Burning Season" discusses the life and importance of Chico Mendes, the founder of Brazil's ecological movement to preserve and save the Amazon rainforest from the destruction by herders, miners, and other companies wanting to exploit the region's rich natural supplies.

Mendes, who led a movement from the small frontier town of Acre, became an international celebrity after he went on Brazilian television to fight the destruction of the Amazonian Rainforest. With the ban on Argentine beef, Brazilian farmers saw the Amazon as being an emerging area to raise cattle in order to meet the world demand for beef. Miners, who were moving onto Indian lands to mine for gold, copper, and other minerals were also effecting the rainforest's ecology.

Mendes, who was a "seringuiero," or "rubber-tapper," relied on the Amazon's vast supply of rubber trees in order to make a living. Seeing that his source of income was in peril with the elimination of trees in order to make room for miners and farmers, Mendes began a national movement to awaken the consciousness of the world about the obvious dangers that lurked nearby if the rainforest was cleared. However, his life will take a tragic turn when he was only starting to gain international awareness and support for his movement.

The first few chapters of the book discuss the importance the rainforest plays when it comes to the spectrum of life on earth. The rainforest's vast fauna, flora, and wildlife have allowed many native cultures to survive for centuries, before and after the arrival of the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors. The Amazon's emergence as a battleground for the discovery and development of cures and vaccines for various diseases and maladies has become more important in recent years, especially as pharmaceutical companies search for an AIDS vaccine. The rest of the book discusses Chico's early life, his career, family, and activism, and all events of importance to his movement after his death, especially the trial that brought those responsible for his death to justice.

This is a must-read book for everyone. Chico Mendes' mission to educate the world of the immense importance that Brazil's rainforest is to world's climate control should not die in vain. This important, ethical book will awaken your awareness of what the Amazon's destruction and development will have on the world's population

3 out of 5 stars Chico was a powerful man who helps his people and the forest.......1999-04-07

This book is very educational. It helps you learn about a man who strives for what he wants. He wanted the tree cutters to stop cutting down his people's trees. The trees were rubber trees. And the town people are rubber tappers. In order for the people to go on with their lives they all needed the trees. Chico was a very patonate man, and we all should be greatful that he risked his life for the forest.
