    Book Description

In Butterflies: Ecology and Evolution Taking Flight, the world's leading experts synthesize current knowledge of butterflies to show how the study of these fascinating creatures as model systems can lead to deeper understanding of ecological and evolutionary patterns and processes in general. The twenty-six chapters are organized into broad functional areas, covering the uses of butterflies in the study of behavior, ecology, genetics and evolution, systematics, and conservation biology. Especially in the context of the current biodiversity crisis, this book shows how results found with butterflies can help us understand large, rapid changes in the world we share with them—for example, geographic distributions of some butterflies have begun to shift in response to global warming, giving early evidence of climate change that scientists, politicians, and citizens alike should heed.

The first international synthesis of butterfly biology in two decades, Butterflies: Ecology and Evolution Taking Flight offers students, scientists, and amateur naturalists a concise overview of the latest developments in the field. Furthermore, it articulates an exciting new perspective of the whole group of approximately 15,000 species of butterflies as a comprehensive model system for all the sciences concerned with biodiversity and its preservation.

            5 out of 5 stars A True Classic.......2001-11-01

This book is truly a classic and a must-have for anyone interested in identifying and enjoying the trees and shrubs of the Keys. This wonderful guide was written and photographed by a brilliant and engaging naturalist who first saw the Florida Keys in the early 1900's from the caboose of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad train. For more than 50 years Paul Scurlock studied the flora of the Keys and condensed his work into this colorful, easy-to-read and use field guide. Paul Scurlock was a classic old-school naturalist and this book is a fitting testament to his work.

5 out of 5 stars Most thorough botanical guide written about the Florida Keys.......2000-11-20

Author J. Paul Scurlock, now deceased, devoted his retirement years exploring the Florida Keys, observing and photographing every specimen of tree and shrub. Pulished in 1987, It was researched and written before massive development in the Keys and pestiferous imports destroyed many of the native habitats. This book is still considered the bible of Florida Keys shrub and tree identification. With more two or three photos of most plants, it makes identification immeasurably easier: there's a photo of the entire tree, a close-up of the leaves, and the fruit, flower, or most remarkable aspect of the tree close up.

The plants are arranged in alphabetical order by botanical names. Information includes common names and scientific synonyms, detailed physical description, diurnal and seasonal changes, fascinating tidbits, and clues to tricky identifications.

The book emphasizes scientifc information, but is enjoyably readable for anyone interested in home gardening, ecology, or nature. The Miami Herald called it "The first field guide of its kind ...a a book that botanists can respect and nature lovers can understand." I absolutely agree.

I've had the book for several years, and find myself pulling it off the shelf frequently when I encounter a new plant while taking a walk, or want to see if a plant I want in my garden will survive the harsh shoreline conditions of my Florida Keys home.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and comprehensive on important details.......2002-09-26

As always, Molvar gives us an in-depth look at what we need to know: the weather, the terrain, the animals and their normal habitats, reading from maps, packing supplies, essentials on clothing, what foods on the trail to avoid and what to watch for, how to interpret the forests, etc. There is very little in the book that a backpacker or angler would not find pertinent to his visit to Alaska. The writing flows smoothly and evenly, and no part gets greater treatment than the rest. I recommend this as a useful manual to hikers and campers ready to visit Alaska, both novice and veteran. Molvar's firsthand experience shows on every page.

4 out of 5 stars Great First Book on Hiking Alaska.......2001-03-19

This book gives a brief overview of the various regions in Alaska to consider, but focuses more on providing knowledge needed to backpack successfully in the state. The chapters on techniques (including river crossing, snowfield travel, and glacial travel) and wildlife are particularly useful. There is also a chapter on navigating via compass and map, which is helpful since there are very few trails in Alaska. This is a good first read for someone planning their initial backpacking expedition in the nation's largest state. For the more advanced Alaskan, it probably would not be too helpful.

4 out of 5 stars GOOD GUIDE FOR AK!.......2000-01-17

THis book is almost perfact for those people who are looking for an Alaska guide book. Some information good be more specific though..

            Book Description

Boys. 7 of them, to be exact.

Megan is used to moving from place to place -- it's typical for an army brat. But she drew the line at South Korea. She insists on staying in the States to finish her last two years of high school. So her parents made arrangements for Megan to live with their friends, the McGowans...and the McGowans' 7 sons.

Turns out, living with 7 boys might as well be a foreign country! The boys are messy. They are cliquey (who knew?). And worst of all, two of the oldest boys are H-O-T. (A problem considering they are supposed to be Megan's "brothers.") Megan is definitely in enemy territory. She needs to win over the boys' hearts without totally crushing her own.

And when Megan starts falling for one of them, sibling rivalry takes on a whole new meaning....

What is a girl to do?

4 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment if you are Grounded!.......2007-09-10

This book was really good and caught my attention since i was grounded. It was a really good book and i like how you really didnt know what was going to happen next. The only thing i didn't like about the book is it just kind of ended. It seemed like ther e should be a second one.

            5 out of 5 stars Fun!.......2007-06-11

Its been said in previous reviews, but this book really is just good fun. Sure there are alot of cliches, but Megan Meade's explores many a teen girls fantasty with this novel and manages to do so somewhat realistically. This wasn't a paticulary moving novel, but it left me feeling lighthearted after reading.
            Reccomended for light reading.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK ROCKS!!!!.......2007-03-19

It is a book about a 16 year old army brat who has finally said no to her parents when she will have to move yet again. So, her parents tell her it is either that or move into the Mcgowan's house for 2 years. She choose's to go live with the Mcgowan family who has 5 teenage boys, 2 elementry boys, and 2 parents. There is also a accident when she was 9 she hit the second to oldest boy Evan. Who is now a hot hunk with the rest of the teenage boys. What will happen? Will she and Evan start dating? Who are the rest of the boys? Read actually buy this book and find out!! You will want to read it again and again. I have at least read it 5 times and I only heard of it a couple months ago.

5 out of 5 stars Megan Meade's Guide to the McGowan Boys.......2007-03-02

Look out for Megan Meade! Instead of going to Korea, she's going to live with a whole family of guys. You can imagine how this would be... one hot one, a bunch of obnoxious ones, one cute one... and it makes for great reading. It was just interesting, and I always wanted to know what was going to happen. The whole book was the slightest bit predictable, but right at the end Kate Brian threw something in there that makes the whole book worthwhile. I am stuck here wondering... what's going to happen?

3 out of 5 stars fun teen story.......2007-03-01

I like the main character very much. The boys seem rather immature. There were exciting highlights and suspense as you wonder which boy she'll end up with.

The flaws are that the ending is very rushed; the girl friends are not in sight; and the inconclusiveness is not satisfying.

Research and policy toward sustainable forest management have often paid incomplete attention to the well being of local populations and their activities as forest managers. Where there has been recognition of local communities, the roles of marginalized groups and women are usually not well understood. This is despite evidence that equity and social relationships, including gender roles, are important factors in the ways that communities manage forest resources overall and adapt to change.

Moonshine forms a way of explaining the mysterious connection between the monster finite group and modular functions from classical number theory. The theory has evolved to describe the relationship between finite groups, modular forms and vertex operator algebras. Moonshine Beyond the Monster, the first book of its kind, describes the general theory of Moonshine and its underlying concepts, emphasising the interconnections between modern mathematics and mathematical physics. Written in a clear and pedagogical style, this book is ideal for graduate students and researchers working in areas such as conformal field theory, string theory, algebra, number theory, geometry, and functional analysis. Containing over a hundred exercises, it is also a suitable textbook for graduate courses on Moonshine and as supplementary reading for courses on conformal field theory and string theory.

In this collection of highly acclaimed women writers (including Jane Smiley, Madeleine L'Engle, Diane Ackerman, and Carol Shields), we find the mystery and meaning in life's most ordinary passages and rituals, such as allowing the sound of a mother's lullaby to enter one's DNA, or learning to fall in love, or muddling through the stages of sisterhood. Although these essays originally appeared in Victoria magazine, they are untainted by schmaltz or flowery notions. Each piece speaks from precious years of spiritual reflection and carries the weight of world-class writers. --Gail Hudson

5 out of 5 stars It felt like "coming home"........1999-07-09

I have been an avid reader of Victoria magazine for several years and thoroughly enjoyed the essays. Sometimes I clip articles or pictures from other magazines that touch my soul, but I cannot bring myself to separate even one article from Victoria. Now, here in this book, it's been done for me. So many of the stories/essays speak my life. My favorite is "Reflecting on Foot." I eagerly await another collection. Now if there was a book collecting my "Favorite Things" I would be in heaven.

                  5 out of 5 stars Thoughtful essays on a woman's life........1998-12-02

This is a book I read for relaxation and to reflect on my life. I love it. I'm buying a copy for my married step-daughter for Christmas.
