        Book Description

“A powerful story. . . . Travis is Everyteen: part insecure hell-raiser, part closet intellectual, prone to both sneers and tears. Hinton continues to grow more reflective in her books, but her great understanding, not of what teenagers are but of what they can hope to be, is undiminished.”—Kirkus Reviews

4 out of 5 stars Over to soon.......2006-06-21

This was over all a good book. I thought it was over to soon and not all in a good way. The climax of the story happens to quickly and after there is a hasty conclusion like SE Hinton was in a hurry to finish it. The story was good though and I still enjoyed the book.

The question "What If?" plays a big part in the story. We all ask that-What if i had... whould things have been better? They would have been different but if we had chosen the other option we would still be sitting around wondering what if. Learn to make the choice you want and move on. We can't change the past so look to the future.

2 out of 5 stars Taming the Star Runner- By S.E. Hinton.......2006-03-22

        Book Review By Sam K.

In S.E. Hinton's Taming the Star Runner, a sixteen year old boy named Travis travels to the countryside to visit his uncle Ken. Travis is a tough looking city boy who can get himself out of any situation, and he has a hard time making friends at the "hick school." He decides to go to the barn to meet Casey, who introduces him to the Star Runner, a crazy untamed horse. Later Travis finds that he and the Star Runner have a lot in common.
I didn't care for this book because it didn't have a lot to do with the Star Runner. I think S.E. Hinton should have added more detail on how the Star Runner got tamed. I would recommend this book to a young adult like Travis: a procrastinator from the city. I think this because I feel if you're like the character you can understand more about the story you're being told. It was an okay book.

        5 out of 5 stars Michael's review.......2006-01-17

The main character's name is Travis, a city boy who drinks, smokes, and gets into a lot of trouble. He is sent to live on a horse ranch with his uncle because he beat his stepfather with a fire poker. He meets a girl named Casey who is trying to train a horse named Star Runner. He is sixteen, a writer, and is having a book published. He has a hard time getting used to living in the country and learning how to train a horse.
I liked this book. The last three chapters were the best in the book. They really got my interest.
I would recommend this book to high school students, especially to kids who like horses or ride in show. It was an easy book to read, and it has a surprise ending that turns the book around.

Taming the Star Runner is a book about a teenage boy who is addicted to many bad things and one night his father is hurting his mother so he hits him with a fire poker. His parents send him to his uncle's house to cool down and he learns alot about being a real man and how to quit smoking. This is realistic fiction book. I would give it 5 stars.
This book is suitble for ages 12-18 and does have some language issues. this book tells a great story and has a happy ending. To learn more you will have to read the book.

        3 out of 5 stars Big Tex.......2005-11-23

In the book Taming Star Runner, Tex is the main character in this book. He is fourteen year old boy that lives with his brother Mason. Mason is his older brother and he is about seventeen years old. Tex has always wanted to be an author because ever since he was in grade school he had been writing comics and he would always be the on telling scary stories about at the camp firer. Once his brother sarted to find out what he is doing that made him made. If you have brothers and maybe even sisters then you would know what his life is like. His brother and he get in much fight and in some cases one or the other may get hurt. They used to live with their dad and now they live by themselves. The book never told me where their dad had gone, but he has been gone for five months now. Some of the problems that the boys have been having in the book Taming Star Runner are that they make fake id and they go out drinking get in trouble they don't tell each other all of their problems. I don't want to tell you too much because I would like for you to read it to find out about the end.

Things that I did like about the book are that it is more of a western type of book. It doesn't seem like a western book, but really the boys live on a ranch and they help people train horses. This book also has a little bit of adventures in it. I am one of those guys that live on a farm and I hate reading, but if I find a good book then I like to read.

Some of the people that would like to read this book are people with adventurous and some of the authors would be Will Hobbs, and Gary Paulsen. The people that like more of a true story then they would like this book to read.

                            Book Description

I didn't read all of this book, but I know it's a winner. Female readers should not be threatened by the introduction being written by Gates, a man. He has consistently supported work by women and gay men and shown himself to be quite the cool straight man. In this book, many academics analyze well-known texts by black women. You'll be relieved that it's critical, and not gushy or essentialist. Here's my one big problem. In her discussion of Walker's "The Color Purple", hook condemns Walker for turning Celie into a capitalist after all the racist, sexist, and classist (and possibly homophobic) exploitation she faced throughout her life. However, what hooks fails to realize is that Celie created a business called "Folks Pants" that made clothes fit for both genders and all sizes. The "folk" in the title has very socialist implications. hooks should be pleased that Celie finally has some agency and can live by her own means and on her own terms. Methinks hooks is jealous of Walker's success.

Karl Rahner: Spiritual Writings collects the spiritual writings of Karl Rahner (1904-1984), a Jesuit priest and one of the most well-known Catholic theologians of the twentieth century. Some of his works are presented in English for the first time, skillfully edited by English Jesuit and journal editor Philip Endean. Each topic of Rahner's writings is brief, lasting only a few pages, but the whole blend into a seamless dialogue of the human experience with God, Jesus Christ, and the role of the church. From Rahner's literate and impassioned reply to a letter from one who loved God but was disillusioned with the Church, to his thoughts on the role of Mary in theology, to contemplations upon the inexplicable mysteries of terrible suffering in the modern world and what truly lies beyond death, Karl Rahner: Spiritual Writings is a profound contribution of a truly holy and selfless man to religion and spirituality shelves. Highly recommended.

I ordered and read Moshe Dayan's autobiography after the recent activities of the IDF. I was curious to get an idea of alternative solutions that could have been implemented by the man himself.

It was fascinating to extrapolate Dayan's preferred methods of military engagement to the recent engagement. He wrote how he and David Ben-Gurion got along well and supported and respected each other; except Dayan did not prefer to "steamroller" his troops directly at the enemy front, but to risk a dash around to the rear of the enemy, cutting them off from their reinforcements and second line of defense; thus splitting the enemy's communication lines and disrupting any coordinated plan they had. I think he was successful with this tactic many times since 1948. The book is a captivating read, chronicling the same lame political dithering and bickering as seen today - but with unimaginably violent, gut-wrenching accounts of battle which would more than compare to Omaha Beach in the movie "Saving Private Ryan." I think that Moshe Dayan experienced "Omaha Beaches" with personal integrity, valour and a caring heart, first hand, many times, for 25 years! Little did we know.

Moshe Dayan tells the story of his life, and his military campaigns in a clear and strong incisive language. He tells of his early years in Degania, his recruitment into the Night Brigades of Orde Wingate, his wounding and loss of an eye in Syria, his part in the Israeli War of Independance. He tells of the Sinai Campaign in which he played a leading part. And he tells also of his dramatic summoning to the Defense Ministry in the 1967 War, and the subsequent victory of that War. The difficult chapter is his own accounting of the Yom Kippur War debacle in which he perhaps does not tell us the degree to which he was responsible.
Dayan was a Biblically inspired warrior, one who knew and loved the Land of Israel very well. A controversial figure in many ways this autobiography does not include the final chapters of his story, when he was invited to be Foreign Minister by Menachem Begin, and played an important role in the contacts and peace negotiations with Egypt's Anwar Sadat.
Dayan was an inventive soldier and a courageous one who contributed much to the building of the Army of Israel. He had failings in his personal life which are not really documented in this volume.
Nonetheless he is a strong writer, and his presentation is vivid and forthright.
Reading this book one will learn not only about the life of Dayan, but about a portion of the history of Israel.

Moshe Dayan was born in palestine to Russian immigrants and was thus a Sabra, a palestinian jew. At an early age he guarded the kibbutz Deganiah along with other youths against local Arab marauders in the Galilee. His namesake was another youth named Moshe (Moses), an immigrant from Russia who was attacked and killed by marauders while he was on his way to get medicines for Moshe Dayan's father. The first few decades of twentieth century life for jews in palestine were back breaking hard work; for Moshe Dayan's family, they worked to transform mosquito-infested swamplands into lush, fertile farmlands and battled bouts of malaria regularly like many other zionist pioneers. The foundation of the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) was the Hashomer (the Guard) formed in 1909, a few years before Dayan's birth, which gave rise later to the Haganah (the Defense) and Palmach of which Moshe Dayan and Yitzhak Rabin were members. These forces for the jews in palestine were indispensible to the jews' survival in many ways. He was groomed for leadership at an early age trained militarily by the English general Orde Wingate and by the zionist leader, Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion. Dayan is known mostly for his role as Israel's defense minister and his military service. My curiousity about him was peaked by my trip to Israel in 2000. I thoroughly enjoyed Dayan's autobiography. It was interesting to read about Israel's early history from the vantage point of one of Israel's most famous defenders.

The life of Moshe Dayan is indeed very interesting. By reading it one gets to understand much better the historical and political issues involved in the isralei - palestinian question and how this matter got entangled with most of the 20th century geopolitical evolution. Moshe Dayan was a natural born soldier, being involved with the zionist undercovered military machine since his teens. His rise to power was connected to the clear leadership he exerted on his soldiers, and not to political arrangements. In this sense Dayan was always among his soldiers, much more a "primus inter pares" than an unreachable strategist that sees battle from a map room. The book is very sincere and in many points he opens his heart and one can see the joy (as for example in the episode of the liberation of Jerusalem) and sadness (when he talks about the dead young officers during the yom kippur war). It is important to notice, however, that despite being such a telented soldier, one can not say that Dayan succeeded as a politician. His mandate as Minister of Agriculture receives almost no atention in the book and one can see that his heart was not at it. Other episodes that deserved more atention, like the Lavon affair and the creation of Rafi are quite superficially touched.

OK this was a good book it just suffers from one serious flaw. 0n page 22 of the 1976 edition from William Morrow and Company Dayan writes "on may 4 1915 I was born in deganiah.." Then on page 505 Dayan writes "In the first, our 1948 war of independance I was twenty five and commanded a commando battalsion". Yeah the numbers dont really work out..kind of strange. "c'mon Moshe, who wrote the book for ya?

This is the story of Moshe Dayan one of the great military leaders of modern Israel. He tells in a clear and strong way the story of a good part of his long career from growing up in Degania to his great triumphs in the 1956 Sinai Campaign and the 1967 Six- Day War. Dayan in telling the story of his life tells much about the whole process of Israel's development and its struggle against all odds to survive and become a modern Jewish state. Dayan is a controversial figure today in Israel despised by some for the haste in which he abandoned the Jewish claim to the Temple Mount. But there is no questioning the enormous contribution he made to develop the Israeli Armed Forces, and the enormous dedication and courage he showed in a lifetime work of serving his country and his people.
This work is highly recommended for all those who would know the story of Israel from one who helped make it happen.

                                                Book Description

This text mixes the best classic theory and research on urban politics with the most recent developments in urban and metropolitan affairs. Six fundamental themes guide the book: the importance of private power and the rise of public-private partnerships; the continuing role of formal rules and structures of government; the importance of external affairs and intergovernmental relations in the modern city; commonalties and differences among Frostbelt and Sunbelt cities; the complexity of racial issues and the effect of the new immigration; and the importance of the gendered city.

                                                Book Description

"Zero Emissions" has become a definitive term in the debate on sustainable development in the last few years. While considered a utopian target by some, the concept clearly describes what business and industry of the future must aim to achieve. There is no confusion here; the aim is transparent: no pollution and no waste. Only when industry mimics nature, where nothing is wasted, can it achieve the same levels of material productivity. The world of waste is a world of opportunity. A world where the waste from one process can become the raw material for another--a cascade of new materials once thought worthless supporting new products, new processes and new wealth--as industries that were previously considered unrelated cluster together. A world where new business will be created on an unprecedented scale. This is not just a theory: projects in the agro-business, based on integrated biosystems, are already up and have proved effective. UpSizing examines how the adoption of the Zero Emissions concept not only radically reduces pollution and waste but can contribute significantly to the generation of income and jobs - specifically for those that need them most: the rural poor in less developed countries.

Pauli has succeeded in doing a rare thing indeed...that of demonstrating how the environment and the economy can complement each other to create synergies! All this in the context of protecting and preserving our environment for current and future generations.

The book is well written and supported by solid facts and well-developed case studies. It serves as a guide post for people of all walks of life, including CEOs, entrepreneurs, environmentalist and public servants, who want to act or promote action that will help reduce, even eliminate waste, while stimulating economic development. More importantly, this book gives hope that we can adopt ways of doing business that reduce the negative impacts on our environment.

                                                4 out of 5 stars Breakthrough Ideas.......2001-07-17

Upsizing seems more a visionary work to me than one to read to find out the environmental consequences of human industrialization (See review below). Pauli presents a vision for an economically viable world where there's ZERO pollution, and offers a number of real-world experiments that seem so far to have worked. However, the path he encourages won't be an easy one -- it requires systematically rethinking what industry is, how it works, and how it fits into our world. Upsizing begins to construct an argument for why we should do this and shows how the rethought world might look.

Basically, Pauli is making a case for turning all industrial waste toward productive purposes. Our current processes, for instance, to make paper result in a huge loss of productivity when waste wood products -- which could be turned to other uses -- are burned or disposed of such that they are lost forever.

While the ideas in this book are incredibly exciting, the delivery seemed to me a bit rough. While competently presented, as an argument this book seems a little bit disparate and untamed, and its style is a bit flat, if not boring. Still, kudos to Pauli for writing it. His is an exciting vision, and I only hope his projects get the press and consideration they deserve. I'm giving it four stars because of the extraordinary ideas: more people should know about how we can make our waste productive.

5 out of 5 stars Sustainable Development Well-Described.......2001-03-08

This is an excellent book for anyone who's interested in the environmental consequences of human industrialization and development. I had never heard of the author or his organization (ZERI: Zero Emissions Research Institute), but it's all described in this book, and it's a fascinating proposition.

At first I was a little worried that this book would be a little boring, but it's succinct and well-written. You'll think that the proposals are impossible or unattainable, but the author backs them up at the end with real-world implementations that are successful.

I recommend this book for the CEO of any manufacturing company. The concepts presented in this book will show you how to expand your product offering, minimize environmental impact, and make more money all at the same time.
