Great Costa Rica Traveler's resource.......2005-09-21
This book is a Great Costa Rica Traveler's resource as it showcases each of Costa Rica's natural areas such as National Parks and Preserves, many not known to the average traveler.
What I like about the book are not only the great full color maps but also the color photos and the descriptions accompanying
the area highlighted. The book is called a Nature Atlas Guidebook and has text in English and Spanish. The government of Costa Rica as well as numerous other agencies interested in preserving the natural wealth of Costa Rica contributed to this
book. If you are interested in visting the many parks and natural protected resources in Costa Rica, this book is a great
guide on your adventure. *** Warning it will inspire you
to spend months traveling the Costa Rica back roads and highways !
The guidebook comes in a spiral binding and is divided into sections corresponding to each of Costa Rica's provinces. Each province has a sub-sections with the parks or preserves decribeded using text, photos and maps. The scale of the map is
listed as 1 : 200,000. The book I am describing is the 2nd Edition printed in 2000. I have only encountered this book in Costa Rica during my 5 trips to that beautiful country.

In order to pass English class and graduate, 18-year-old Steve York has to write a 100- page essay about his life. What sounds like a run-of-the-mill writing assignment, however, becomes an excuse for Steve to reflect on the last four years (from Texas freshman to California senior), and figure out where it all went wrong. Maybe it was when he discovered that he really couldn't relate to his father, the Famous Astronaut. Or it could be because his "heart had been run through frappé, puree, and liquefy on a love blender" by his ex-girlfriend, Wanda "Dub" Varner. No matter where the finger of blame ends up pointing, it's a wild ride of self-enlightenment as Steve discovers that not all relationships are permanent, and that some--like the one with his dad--can be mended with a little work. With Steve, author Rob Thomas has taken a teenage outsider and given him a funny, intelligent voice: "There are those males who merely fill ear holes with tiny studs hardly big enough to offend a Marine. Not me. Most days I wear big hoops. When I combine the look with a doo rag, I'm a regular pirate." As with his other novels--Doing Time and Slave Day--Thomas proves his thorough grasp of young adult issues and emotions. Teens will appreciate the author's empathy and humor, and teachers and parents will examine his work for clues to the mystery of adolescence. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert
Customer Reviews:
One of the best YA books out there.......2007-09-28
Being a fan of Veronica Mars, I decided to read this book, hoping for a book of the same quality of the TV show produced by the author, Rob Thomas. I was not disappoointed.
Rats Saw God tells the story of messed up Steve York, who has to write a 100 page eassy in order to graduate. He decides to write about his last two years in high school and is forced to face the ruin of his life at the same time.
The story deals with a lot of relationship issues. Steve is disconnected from his father, who he calls "the astronaut," and does not attempt to fix their relationship. There is also the relationship between Steve and his ex-girlfriend, Wanda "Dub" Varner.
I liked how Steve narrates his story in a witty way and how even when he does seem apathetic and sarcastic, he still has emotions, making him a 3-D and interesting character.
Highly recommend this book to teenagers, but to adults as well.
Rob Thomas is a Genius.......2007-06-27
A huge fan of his TV/Movies, I gave this book a shot. It was great. The writing was the same... some of the details he even re-used in Veronica Mars. I'm looking forward to reading his other books.
High School Angst.......2007-04-23
Steve has just moved from Texas to California. He left behind his father, an astronaut superachiever who seems to be expecting Steve to live up to his legacy, in order to live with his mother and sister in California. He is just in time for his senior year in high school, and things are going down the tubes. He is smart and capable but he has turned to drugs and has let all of his grades slip. He doesn't seem to care about anything.
A school counselor looks through Steve's records and notices that he had good grades at his old high school and that he will fall one English credit short of graduating without summer school. So he gives Steve an assignment--write one hundred pages about anything and he will get his English credit. Eager to avoid summer school, Steve begins to write, and to relive the experiences in high school that brought him to this point.
It was all about Dub, Steve's high school girlfriend. Through Steve's writing assignment we are able to see step by step the way their relationship developed and eventually was destroyed. Through his narration of events, Steve is able to come to terms with the things that led him to his troubles in his senior year, and he begins to feel better about things in his life.
I liked how this story was told in two parts--through Steve's story of his early high school experience as well as the narrative of his senior year. I really liked Steve's sister, Sarah. She was a great character and it was fitting that the truth of their parents' divorce would come from her.
The relationship between Steve and his father was absolutely painful, though. I found it hard to believe they had lived together like that for so long. I also disliked the thing that caused Steve and Dub to break up. It was too cliche for me and happened with no foreshadowing.
Nice Book.......2006-11-06
I really enjoyed this book. It's not too heavy but it's a great story. It's the type of book you read on a plane in one setting. I'd highly suggest it, especially if you had some divorced parent issues and acted out in strange ways in High School. It sure brings back the memories.
A Must For Fans of Veronica Mars.......2006-10-11
Lots of fun. I bought it because I'm a fan of Rob Thomas' television shows Veronica Mars and Cupid, and because Rob used to teach high school here in Austin. It's written in a voice similar to Veronica Mars, and while there are no crimes being committed, there is a central mystery. And the book gets high school romance right. It's a quick read, but a good time.

Book Description

Book Description
This is part of a new series of guides to contemporary novels. The aim of the series is to give readers accessible and informative introductions to some of the most popular, most acclaimed and most influential novels of recent years - from `The Remains of the Day' to `White Teeth'. A team of contemporary fiction scholars from both sides of the Atlantic has been assembled to provide a thorough and readable analysis of each of the novels in question.
Customer Reviews:
Not cheap, but definitely worth it.......2001-11-21
This is a small book but they've managed to pack an amazing amount of information and opinion into it. I'm a huge fan of Trainspotting, in all of its incarnations, and the energy of the work really comes through in this book - Robert Morace is clearly a big fan as well. He provides some fascinating background on Welsh's own background (especially about Thatcherism and its effects on Scotland) and his analysis of the novel itself is readable and hard to disagree with. I've read Trainspotting 4 or 5 times, but this has made me want to go and read it again.

David Kherdian re-creates his mother's voice in telling the true story of a childhood interrupted by one of the most devastating holocausts of our century. Vernon Dumehjian Kherdian was born into a loving and prosperous family. Then, in the year 1915, the Turkish government began the systematic destruction of its Armenian population.

Tear Jerker.......2007-08-13
I read this book 4 years ago. It's an amazing story, but make sure you have your tissues with you!
The road from home.......2007-05-28
This book is like an Armenian Ann Frank. You feel you know the family. It was very well written.
So far...so good .......2007-01-31
I am reading this book as a student in literature class. We as a class have only read up through chapter 5. So far it is a good book. However I would not recommend this book to anybody who is very sensitive, beacuse this is a very sad,and true story. There are some parts that are boring so you have to be paient with the book. This book is very popular amongst my class. So if you are interested in true stories i would recommend this book.
The Road from Home by Deahna S........2006-12-13
I really enjoyed The Road From Home. It was an interesting biography about an Armenian girl named Veron Dumehjian. She tells us of her life during the early 1900's when the Turkish government attempted to rid Turkey of its Armenian population. She and her family are torn from their quiet, wealthy lifestyle in Azizya. They are forced to march without being told where they are going. This is a beautiful story of Veron's strength and will to be alive.
As I was reading this book, I felt the intensity of Veron's emotions. She struggles to hold onto sanity as "the great dome of Heaven cracked and shattered" over her life. In some ways I can relate to Veron in the way that she cares for her family more than herself.
David Kherdian, the author, really does use an abstract way to describe the emotions of the characters. An example of this when he wrote, "Slowly, our lives fell into a pattern as we began to live with our sorrows and make a new life," to describe when Veron was getting used to her life after her parents and siblings had died. He uses descriptive words and has a clear plot line. There were very few moments during this book when I felt confused.
Over all, The Road from Home was a sad, but enjoyable book. It was sad because of the things that Veron must go through. It was enjoyable because of how well written and unique it is. This book really does show how someone's life can change in the blink of an eye.
The Best Book in the most simple words.......2006-09-20
This is by far one of the best books that I have read about the Armenian Genocide, in the most simple words possible. The book captures the reader's attention by its moving and true story of a young woman who came from a distinguished Armenian family in Turkey and became a victim of the first genocide of the century. It shows the courage of this young woman and the will power of most Armenians in staying alive and surviving the most brutal acts of the Turks against the Armenians. It is a story that every child & adult, Armenian or none, should read. It gives the reader a true perspective of how the Turks committed the act of slaughtering and killing the Armenians and the Greek, while also sharing some of the Armenian history and its cultural practices. I suspect that Veron Kherdian is still alive, but if she is, I'd love to visit her and thank her for her courage, her lessons that she taught me in her book, and most of all the message that she gave in her book: "Never give up hope in a better and sunny day, yet to come" and for me as an Armenian her most important message was to never give up my race and my history as an Armenian and to teach our future generations the truth about our history and our ancestors.

Book Description
Cyprus, 1957: Bill Walker is a veteran Royal Military Police staff sergeant who is something of a legend within the Corps. Major Steadman is a murderous psychopath who has sworn to kill him. Walker has no hard evidence, but when atrocities begin to occur, Walker can no longer turn a blind eye.
Customer Reviews:
Salty Language and gripping story.......2007-02-14
The joy of Brian Callison books, is the feeling you get of reading about real characters and real reactions, with real language. This book is no exception.
The story is in two parts, revolving around Staff Sergeant Walker (a redcap, which is a military policeman) and his encounters with the unhinged Major Steadman - the Amazon synopsis sums it up well.
It is the writing which sets Callison apart - Walker speaks (and thinks) in an authentic colloquial style, even interrupting his own thoughts. There is humour, of the black and dry kind, and the action scenes are gripping and breathless, with no detail unspared when things get gory. However, behind the façade of salty guy-next-door language, is a well structured story which is all about characters and their evolution. The final confrontation is virtually all verbal and yet is one of the most gripping endings in recent memory.
Modern day thriller writers could learn a lot from Callison, who imbues hard-bitten characters with warmth, callousness, fear and other emotions, in much more real proportions that heroes are normally imbued with.
Regular readers of Callison will not be disappointed - this is better than his last couple of books. New readers will enjoy I am sure, but it is an odd introduction to an author who almost always sets his stories at sea. Buy it and read it - but for new readers I suggest starting with `A Flock of Ships' and `The Sextant', both modern day descriptive classics of war at sea.

Book Description
The story of Britain's provost forces necessarily focuses attention on some of the less glorious episodes of British Army history. Had every British soldier over the centuries been an obedient and dutiful soul, there would have been no need for provost of military police. Sadly, armies – particularly in time of war – have always been home for the criminal, and the British Army has had its share of thieves and cut-throats, as well as its drunken and licentious element. How these were contained, or dealt with, is the main subject of this book. The men who tamed the lawless are its subject.
Customer Reviews:
A 1st Rate Book on a little know Unit .......2005-05-07
RSM Chappell has done an excellent job on one of the British Armys less know but none the less very vital unit. The Redcaps as the Military Police are known over there are the Police Department of the Army.
Theirs is a very tough, dirty & demanding job that is not done properly can blow up in your face as history has been shown in Iraq. It was also an eye opener to me in that he does not gloss over some of the problems the Brits faced with some of their more rowdy rascals. Especially after WWII when the Army it seems had more than their fair share of discipline problems with their National Servicemen.
Also this Book is the exception that proves the general rule about the Osprey Series. I.E. you either have excellent illustrations or a well written text, very seldom do you have both. Fortunetley, Mr. Chappell has the skill & experience to do an outstanding job in both areas. His illustrations show a keen use of color, realism and a wealth of experience to back it up.
It is also very clear that he has a lot of love and respect for good soldiers. If I see either his name or Mr. McBride no matter the subject, I need to buy the book as I know that I am in for a treat.
Book Description
Emperors in the Jungle is an exposé of key episodes in the military involvement of the United States in Panama. Investigative journalism at its best, this book reveals how U.S. ideas about taming tropical jungles and people, combined with commercial and military objectives, shaped more than a century of intervention and environmental engineering in a small, strategically located nation. Whether uncovering the U.S. Army’s decades-long program of chemical weapons tests in Panama or recounting the invasion in December 1989 which was the U.S. military’s twentieth intervention in Panama since 1856, John Lindsay-Poland vividly portrays the extent and costs of U.S. involvement.
Analyzing new evidence gathered through interviews, archival research, and Freedom of Information Act requests, Lindsay-Poland discloses the hidden history of U.S.–Panama relations, including the human and environmental toll of the massive canal building project from 1904 to 1914. In stunning detail he describes secret chemical weapons tests—of toxins including nerve agent and Agent Orange—as well as plans developed in the 1960s to use nuclear blasts to create a second canal in Panama.
He chronicles sustained efforts by Panamanians and international environmental groups to hold the United States responsible for the disposal of the tens of thousands of explosives it left undetonated on the land it turned over to Panama in 1999. In the context of a relationship increasingly driven by the U.S. antidrug campaigns, Lindsay-Poland reports on the myriad issues that surrounded Panama’s takeover of the canal in accordance with the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty, and he assesses the future prospects for the Panamanian people, land, and canal area. Bringing to light historical legacies unknown to most U.S. citizens or even to many Panamanians, Emperors in the Jungle is a major contribution toward a new, more open relationship between Panama and the United States.

Informative but too angry.......2005-07-26
Very well researched but the author obviously has a chip on his shoulder. He takes every opportunity to blast the U.S. Government (sometimes rightfully so) but the book would be much more bearable if he would just present the facts without taking every opportunity to play-up how the upper-class Americans oppressed, exploited and took advantage of the lower-class (Indian and African workers). I was looking for a book that presented a comprehensive history but the author is just too angry to be taken seriously.
A Book About Panama with Substance!.......2003-05-19
Lindsay-Poland has written an exceptional book that brings to light fascinating information about US activities and motivations in Panama. Anyone interested in Panama and/or US-Panama relations must read this book. Rather than looking at the isthmus superficially, e.g., focusing on the Noriega crisis or the Canal Treaties, the author takes an historical view of US military interests in Panama and even globally. The book is factual, insightful and enjoyable!
Book Description
"Imagine an American of the 1850s listening to our debates over wildlife and wilderness," proposes Thomas Dunlap. "Coming from a society that was seeking to kill every wolf on the continent, what could he make of our plans to reintroduce the timber wolf into parts of its old range?" This history of wildlife preservation efforts goes far beyond the "good vs. bad" approach to help us see how and why Americans felt the way they did about wild animals--and how and why they have changed. Illustrating his points by an account of our evolving ideas about wolves and coyotes, Dunlap shows how American attitdues toward nature have been transformed during the last century.
