Discover the softer side of the desert. Hidden among rocks, cacti, and tumbleweeds, many appealing desert babies come into the world. And here they are: mountain lion cubs, elf owlets, horned lizard hatchlings, quail chicks...and even very young jackrabbits. Insightfully described by nature writer Bill Broyles and expertly photographed in the wild by the husband-and-wife team of Paul and Joyce Berquist, these little critters will steal your heart away. 45 photos.

About the series: Look West: What do you find? Wide, wild landscapes...extraordinary plants and animals...rugged people rich in history...ghost towns and working ranches...ancient pueblos and ultramodern urban areas. In the West, coyotes howl. Native Americans endure and flourish. Kokopelli, the mythical humpbacked flute player, prances across the cliff dwellings and into popular culture—and thousands of curio shops. Every small, handsome book in Rio Nuevo Publishers' Look West series presents a unique aspect of the American West. Using words and pictures, each volume explores a special Western topic or phenomenon, and all have been written and illustrated by regional experts. Each of these attractive 6 x 6-inch hardcover books contains 64 pages of text, illustrations, and photographs. And each one allows the reader to capture the spirit of the West in the palm of a hand.

        Book Description

Meet Matilda Stubbs. She's nine months old, has six new baby teeth, and loves to send spoonfuls of porridge catapulting through the air. But this is no ordinary baby: Matilda is also a Mallockee -- one of the most powerful creatures in the world. And guess who her big brother is.

In his third heroic adventure, Measle is thrust into his most outlandish predicament yet. How will he ever escape from the spooky, deserted castle, fend off his guardian Wrathmonk, rescue his kidnapped parents, and look after his baby sister? The odds are stacked against him until he learns that, this time, he's got a powerful ally -- Matilda the Mallockee is on his side.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-08-26

My son, who hates to read, couldn't put this book down. He raves over it and has told all of his friends about it. He was excited to get the other two as well. Definitely a good story with lots of action!

5 out of 5 stars Measle Wins Against Evil!.......2006-02-02

The little boy known as Measle is back! He's 12 years old, still clever, quick-thinking and resourceful. Despite the fact that his mother is a Manafount (able to supply a kind of energy), his father a Wizard, and his baby sister a "Mallockee," Measle is just a plain boy. And once again, this plain boy manages to outwit, outthink and out-finagle the most powerful Wizards and Warlocks around. Of course he has help along the way --- especially from his adoring nine-month-old baby sister, Matilda.

Matilda Stubbs had grown steadily into a chubby little baby girl, with piercing green eyes, spiky brown hair, six small, pearly white teeth and a throwing arm of devastating accuracy...Matilda adored her big brother...and lately --- since she discovered how to throw stuff --- Measle was the one she chose to throw it at.

With the exception of Matilda's throwing, things are going along rather peacefully for the little family. But life at home is totally disrupted one morning when Measle's father reads in the paper that a new Prime Magus of the Wizards' Guild has been chosen and is none other than Justin "the-Biggest-Fathead-in-the-Wizarding-Fraternity" Bucket. All of this is made worse by the addition of a just-formed Advisory Board made up of Warlocks. Before long Measle's family is called before the Advisory Board, who presents them with a long list of absurd and made-up accusations. It becomes obvious that they want to get rid of Measle's parents and have become aware that Matilda is a "magus infantum," or an infant wizard! Indeed --- she is a Mallockee:

...Wizards and Warlocks --- and even those contemptible Wrathmonks --- can perform only one major spell in a twenty-four hour period. But the Mallockee has no such limitations. The Mallockee can perform spells without stopping, until he or she becomes too exhausted to continue...a Mallockee doesn't need incantations for its spells. All a Mallockee has to do is think the spell, and it's done!

This knowledge immediately puts Matilda in grave danger. As the parents are led away "for safe-keeping" Measle, Matilda and his remarkable dog Tinker are able to escape with help from another Wizard, Toby Jugg. Toby takes them to Caltrop Castle where he says they will be safe until the situation is resolved. At the castle Measle befriends a little Wrathmonk named Mr. Niggle and runs into a series of truly scary and frightening adventures. It becomes apparent that those who Measle thinks are friends are not and those who might be enemies are not. Now Measle must figure out how to escape from this terrible place, free his parents and disband the committee of Warlocks and its evil leader.

This is the third in the Measle series, and again the writing is crisp and well-paced. Our hero Measle and the assorted other fun characters are lively and interesting. Ian Ogilvy has created a great character in Measle, one who wins out against evil through his own goodness and self-reliance. A delightful book, MEASLE AND THE MALLOCKEE will leave readers begging for more from this unpretentious hero and his charming little sis.

I have always wanted to read a biography of Amelia Earhart and, after searching various reviews, I learned that this biography is judged by many to be the best. I can wholeheartedly support this recommendation. Mary Lovell does an excellent job of 'getting under the skin' of both of her main characters: Amelia and George Putnam. She presents a completely fair and level-headed account of both of their lives allowing just enough commentrary into her narrative to enable one to conclude that, yes, maybe Amelia wasn't the best woman flier of her generation, but she was certainly the bravest. And, yes, she was pushed forward into the limelight by George but it was Amelia who wanted to be there in that limelight. I came away from this gripping narrative feeling alternately an enduring admiration for Amelia and her bravery, and an underlying pity for her because it seems to me that a lot of her drive arose from feelings of low self-worth arising from growing-up with a loser, alcoholic father. Maybe, like a lot of brave and famous people, she was driven to succeed by low feelings of self worth and was never really happy. That is a sad thought. In any event, she did a huge favour for the female sex in making them realize that their dreams could be realized. It was notable female figures like Amelia, along with the impact that the second world war had on women in the workforce, that changed the history of women forever.

A fascinating read - funny that this definitive account of an American female legend was presented by a British writer!

5 out of 5 stars Best Biography of Earhart to Date.......2003-12-16

I've read a dozen or so biographies of Amelia Earhart, and Lovell's is by far the best. It is the most comprehensive, the most thoroughly researched, and best written of the lot. Lovell doesn't stoop to speculation or rumor in place of facts. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars An engaging look at a complex woman and the man she loved.......2003-04-06

(by E.M. Singer, author of "Mother Flies Hurricanes")This well-written, thoroughly researched biography of Amelia Earhart focuses more on her life than on her death, which is what she would have wanted anyway. It debunks certain time-held assumptions about Earhart's personal and professional life, and sheds new light on her character and relationships. Contrary to conventional wisdom, Lovell holds that Amelia's husband, George Putnam, was not a manipulative, self-aggrandizing promoter who drove her to her death. There was genuine affection and mutual respect in their marriage. Though their relationship was not free from tension and cross-purposes, Amelia drew inspiration and support from him to realize her dreams. A good chunk of Lovell's book is a biography of George himself, and don't skip it-he's a fascinating person in his own right. The Sound of Wings also presents a fascinating picture of Amelia's early years: her half-idyllic, half-traumatic childhood, and her desperate seeking for inner peace and a place in the world. The author expounds unsparingly, yet tenderly, on Amelia's flaws, demons, and scars. She also gives a clear-sighted and balanced assessment of the various theories for Earhart's disappearance, yet does not allow it to overshadow her life. "The Sound of Wings: The Life of Amelia Earhart", Mary S. Lovell, St. Martin's Press, NY 1st Editon 1989. (PC) 334 pages, but additionally includes Introduction, Prologue, Notes, Epilogue, four Appendices, Glossary & Selected Ref., Index and 73 excellent B & W photographs and some maps: - thusly, we are given more than 420 pgs. 9" x 5 3/4"

Authoress did remarkable exposition in her comprehensive biography of AE, an American Sweetheart, Legend & Icon who was adventuress, feminist/equalist and Aviatrix emanting great charisma, liveliness and goodness.

This lengthy treatise was thoughtfully divided into three sections: I - Amelia Mary Earhart, II - George Palmer Putnam, & III - Amelia and George. Of many books written on AE, this is certainly the most comprehensive of all- dealing thoroughly with her early formative years, her years of maturation & adventure, marriage, etc. and finally a review of her disappearance and of the diverse theories suggested thereof.

A book of this tenor is obviously one written with great passion, and thoughtfullness after thorough research, explaining in part why it remained on NY Times bestseller list for 12 weeks. Just the selection of well-reproduced photographs is, by itself, superb - many not having been previously seen, some cloistered in private collections where access in not universal nor open to the uninvited. To her credit, the writer was able to open many doors at an opportune time, for now many of the players have perished - including the principals who played leading roles in this now legendary story.

Salamanca was the most decisive battle of the entire Peninsular War. Wellington smashed Marmont's French Army and his pursuit of its shattered remnants led to the famous cavalry charge of the King's German Legion at Garcia Hernandez. There would be two more years of sieges and hard fighting before the Iron Duke crossed the Pyrenees into France but from Salamanca the British and their Portuguese and Spanish allies always had the upper hand. Ian Fletcher examines this important battle in detail and also discusses the campaign which led up to it.

The narrative for the battle itself was very interesting and you get a good feel for the tension in the air in the days leading up to the battle; as well as the military genius of Wellington. There is a good overview of Wellington, his commanders and the political challenges the "Iron Duke" faced. The illustrations are also outstanding.

I was a little disappointed in the maps - not up to the usual quality of the Campaign Series. The French Commanders get very little write-up, so the reader doesn't have a good feel for what types of men they were, the challenges they were facing or even Napoleon's feelings towards the Penninsula War. The beginning of the book is also a somewhat choppy and is a little tough to follow.

Don't be mislead by my critisms. This is still a good book (I've read it 2 times to date), but falls short of this series high standard of excellance. It is none-the-less an enjoyable read and worthwhile for any Wellington or Napoleonic era buff

                                  4 out of 5 stars Very Informative.......2000-08-01

This book, while not really shedding any new light on the topic, goes into an in depth look at the battle. Detailed OOB's, photographs of the battlefield today, and excellent 3d maps make this an excellent read for the history buff and wargamer alike. The color plates are excellent, and really give a feel for the time period. My only qualm is that individual unit strengths are not given.

                                    Book Description

Germany's and Italy's belated national unifications continue to loom large in contemporary debates. Often regarded as Europe's paradigmatic instances of failed modernization, the two countries form the basis of many of our most prized theories of social science. Structuring the State undertakes one of the first systematic comparisons of the two cases, putting the origins of these nation-states and the nature of European political development in new light.

Daniel Ziblatt begins his analysis with a striking puzzle: Upon national unification, why was Germany formed as a federal nation-state and Italy as a unitary nation-state? He traces the diplomatic maneuverings and high political drama of national unification in nineteenth-century Germany and Italy to refute the widely accepted notion that the two states' structure stemmed exclusively from Machiavellian farsightedness on the part of militarily powerful political leaders. Instead, he demonstrates that Germany's and Italy's "founding fathers" were constrained by two very different pre-unification patterns of institutional development. In Germany, a legacy of well-developed sub-national institutions provided the key building blocks of federalism. In Italy, these institutions' absence doomed federalism. This crucial difference in the organization of local power still shapes debates about federalism in Italy and Germany today. By exposing the source of this enduring contrast, Structuring the State offers a broader theory of federalism's origins that will interest scholars and students of comparative politics, state-building, international relations, and European political history.
