Customer Reviews:
Digging Dinosaurs!.......2003-11-25
One could not want a more well-written or interesting book about paleontology and dinosaurs. The quality is supreme, pictures are the best ever, and content is contagious. It makes the reader feel part of the conversation. Finsley's book gives the reader impetus to become an active digger! Charles Finsley is a master of communicating with the printed word. A must read for all ages!
Tour Guide for Texas Dinosaur Afficionados.......2003-07-24
Charles E. Finsley certainly succeeds in in his stated objective of making the story of dinosaurs in Texas into a twentieth-century story. The photographs of fossils as well as the fossil finders are great. The text is informative, comprehensive and slanted for the amateur in search of an overview of the story of Texas dinosaurs.
Discover them!.......2001-06-15
Mr. Charles E. Finsley give a great picture of the Texas contributions to dinosaur paleontology. Doris Tischler drawings give you not only posture, but feeding habits, behavior and a dynamical perspective of how the Dinosaurs lived. Mr. Langston experience gives a great complement with his participation. If you like dinosaurs, you'll finish this book in just two days! but you'll use it all your life.
Support Your Local Paleontologist.......2000-12-16
Support your local paleontologist. This simple phrase describes much of what is learned from this interesting little book. Within, the reader learns where Texas stands in the search for our dinosaur heritage. Using an understandable geologic timeline, the Mesozoic story is told with a Texan viewpoint. Leading professional and amateur paleontologists are showcased as the significant sleuths in the story of how hard it is to find, prepare, study and display dinosaur fossils. Their personal experience educates the reader to the scarcity and importance of material and the hard work that has accumulated information throughout the generations. Using simple enough language for a child but having enough information for the average reader this book is easy to read and quite informative. Throughout, thought provoking questions and "did you know?" tidbits are added to instill in the reader the desire to go hunting dinosaurs for themselves.

Book Description
She has grown up--Abyssinia Jackson has--under a vast Oklahoma sky shaded with pecan trees and dotted by endless rows of cotton. She has the gift of song, a storyteller's talent, the love of her parents, and the affection and pride of her community.
Then a tornado hits and drives Abby's family apart. A deranged neighbor targets her for a campaign of vengeful terror. And a physical assault all but breaks her will.
Customer Reviews:
Powerful story of a girl's courage and restored faith.......1999-02-10
Marked By Fire moved my spirit like the tornadic winds Joyce Carol Thomas so eloquently describes. One is easily caught up in the poetic language she uses to tell the story of Abby and an entire community as they learn lessons in restoring faith, not only in God but also in themselves. In reading this book, I am reminded of the complexities of nature -- its destruction and its creation, but more compelling in the story are the complex characters she ably draws. When my book club read the book, all of the women gathered shared how easy it was to relate to the struggles of the people in the novel, especially to Abby's pain. We recommend the book for other mother-daughter book clubs, or for anyone who wants a truly human experience. Marked By Fire is just that good! And then some.
A fabulous coming of age story.......1999-02-07
I like the way Joyce Carol Thomas' language sings. It is vibrant with color and emotion. Her technique is lyrical and finely woven. Her characters too are memorable. Trembling Sally, her nemesis, makes the hair stand up on your head. Mother Barker, her mentor and guide, is full drawn and echoes the wisdom of old women. Her father, named Strong, is just that, a strong character with the best qualities of African- American males as well as the limitations that we all, men and women, suffer. Marked by Fire is an American novel flavored by African-American culture. Marked by Fire can be enjoyed by all: women, men, and folks of all persuasions.
It is beautifully written but confusing.......1999-01-28
Joyce has great technique but leaves out what I think is most important which is descibed emotions. Also, she jumps around and doesn't complete a situation. For example, she speaks of a women with an over due baby and never tells what happened to her. Other than that she shows great intelligence and hard work. She makes each of her charaters unique. I love the courage inside of Abby.

Book Description
This volume provides an introduction to the geometry of manifolds equipped with additional structures connected with the notion of symmetry. The content is divided into five chapters. Chapter I presents the elements of differential geometry which are used in subsequent chapters. Part of the chapter is devoted to general topology, part to the theory of smooth manifolds, and the remaining sections deal with manifolds with additional structures. Chapter II is devoted to the basic notions of the theory of spaces. One of the main topics here is the realization of affinely connected symmetric spaces as totally geodesic submanifolds of Lie groups. In Chapter IV, the most important classes of vector bundles are constructed. This is carried out in terms of differential forms. The geometry of the Euler class is of special interest here. Chapter V presents some applications of the geometrical concepts discussed. In particular, an introduction to modern methods of integration of nonlinear differential equations is given, as well as considerations involving the theory of hydrodynamic-type Poisson brackets with connections to interesting algebraic structures.
For mathematicians and mathematical physicists wishing to obtain a good introduction to the geometry of manifolds. This volume can also be recommended as a supplementary graduate text.

Book Description
The story of Rostam and Esfandiyar is one of the most moving tragedies in Ferdowsi's epic Shahnameh. In this story, Esfandiyar, the designated heir to the throne of Iran, has just returned in triumph from his campaign against the shah of Turan. He has slain Arjasp, Iran's greatest enemy, captured his family and treasury, and liberated his own sisters from their captivity. He expects that his father, Goshtasp, will now abdicate the throne of Iran in his favor as he had sworn to. Goshtasp, however, is not yet ready to honor his promise. Instead he sets his son yet another task as a condition of his abdication. He must bring Iran's greatest hero, Rostam, back to the court in chains. Rostam has neither come to the court of Iran to honor Goshtasp, nor has he sent him a letter declaring his loyalty. Esfandiyar recognizes this is simply a means to put his own life at risk, and says as much. Yet he cannot refuse his father's command.
This tale displays a surprisingly modern skepticism about the values we associate with the Shahnameh. It expresses a profound ambivalence about the demands of heroism, and is sharply critical of a monarch who exploits the courage and loyalty of his heroes to further his own selfish ends.

Customer Reviews:
Reinventing your rainbow.......2007-03-23
It wasn't quite what I expected. There was a lot of personal reflection and was more biographical in nature. However, the main idea of getting over the past and forgiving the hurts to get on with your Christian life was supported well.

Customer Reviews:
gimme a break...you have got to be kidding..........2007-07-28
I give this book no stars.
Here are a few points to consider before rushing to purchase this book.
1. These types of books, sorry efforts by frustrated fanatics, are partially based on "scriptures". Let's just for the sake of argument, assume that the author's readings of the scriptures are entirely true and done with good intentions. That is, he is picking clues/signs/revelations(whatever you want to call them) from the "scriptures" and applying them to today's geo-political/religious climate in the middle east. Now what? Poof! what you know he's got it. By George he's got it. He's figured the identity of the "Anti-Christ". Gimme a break.
2. Do you actually believe that God talks(ed) to people? If someone you know to be a very pious man (we'll even grant you that) told you tomorrow that he's talking to God, what would you think? Would you believe him or get him some "help"?
Do you honestly believe that God would waste his time and converse with humans? Let alone dictate books for us? And tell us our future in detail? And why choose one small period in time to talk to humans? Why not keep talking? Heaven knows we haven't listened yet. It would seem that now is a more crucial time for him to talk to us. Don't you think we need God now more than we did 2000-4000 years ago?
BUT, let's assume he did. Why on earth would he choose one nation, Israel, to be his chief and ONLY messenger? Firstly, Israel was by no means an influential center in the middle east at that time. The center of the middle east was Mesopotamia and Egypt not Israel. Basically, human civilization, at least Western civilization, started in Mesopotamia, which in turn influenced Egyptian civiliaztion, which in turn influenced the Greeks and they in turn influenced the Romans.
Secondly, why didn't God spread his message to other cultures? Hedge his chances of someone listening and making notes? Wait, he did. Didn't he? They're called Buddhism, Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, and that's just a few in an isolated area. How about Africa, Europe (pre-christianity), the Americas, etc. Didn't they have religions, customs, spiritual leaders, etc.? Doesn't God love all of his children? Do you really believe God prefers one race over all others? One religion over all others? Don't you think EACH OF THOSE RELIGIONS HAD/HAVE THEIR OWN VERSION of the beginning of life and the END of it? Why would one be so much more special than ALL of the rest of them?
Thirdly, old testament was written by one group of people, the Hebrew. So they naturally would portray the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Egyptians (again, the most dominant forces in the middle east at that time) as evil and non-believers. Yes they practiced polytheism, but they believed. They believed in natural forces and ideas, but at least they believed in higher powers/forces.
Yes, the Assyrians, Babylonians, and Egyptians were expansionists, like any other civlized/advanced nation, since the beginning of time until today. Anyone who has power will use it. Period. For good or bad. And since the ancient Assyrians enslaved the Jews, and attacked Israel and Jerusalem several times, they were the bad guys and so it was written in the scriptures. But even if that is what happened, which is historically doubtful, does it then follow that 2000 years later, life would repeat itself. Come on...How gullible are you friends?
3. Do you know which nation converted to Christianity first? The Assyrian nation. The first believers in Christ, as a nation without country were the Assyrians. The first Church on earth was established in present day Iraq by the Assyrians. The Assyrians spread Christianity all the way to China without the use of force. How did the British spread christianity in India and China? Through peaceful missionary work or with the help of the cannon? Who is using force in the middle east now? The Assyrians? I doubt it.
4. God doesn't prefer one race over the other. God is not Christian, Jewish, Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist, or something else.
5. Scriptures were written by PEOPLE. NOT GOD! Normal people, but definitely narcissistic.
6. And finally, the Anti-Christ is GREED. It's not Assyrian, Jewish, Arab or any other middle eastern ethnicity. Or of European decent, although the Europeans have for over 2000 years been, by FAR, the most brutal, barbaric ANTI-CHRISTians of any race on earth. And I defy anyone who argues against that!
No. The Anti-Christ is GREED.
With Best.
Eschatological Excellence....Once Again.......2007-02-22
When David penned his previous work, Appointed, he so eloquently demonstrated an eschatological and exegetical standard that has not been seen for at least a century and unequaled today while, at the same time, serving notice to our modern/mainstream prophetic personalities that although they may be sincere, they can only, to themselves, read the words "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin." And, in reference to his most recent project, The Assyrian, the handwriting on the wall reads the same.
He stays true to his personal formula of (1) expecting his readers to be diligent and well-versed in such prophetic texts as Daniel, Isaiah, and the Apocalypse, (2) allowing the Text to both speak for and defend itself thereby relegating cliches and tradition to the responsiblity of the lazy and impressionable "babe" in Christ, and (3) has a desire to entertain no one and to please only One! As a PhD student in Biblical Theology, enormous amounts of reading and research have become a perpetual task. With that, I have yet to encounter such an individual eschatological writer as gifted as David. In a prior review of Appointed, I held the writing as ground-breaking and this second writing only serves as confirmation of my personal stance.
We live in a day and time when (as long as I can remember)that the Middle East has never been so unstable. The PLO and Palestine itself as been a wreck, Ariel Sharon demise, a lunatic Iranian leader, and no viable leader in Iraq. With all of this, its about time the world began to finally accurately identify the "Who's Who" in the "Land of Controversy." Brother David makes the excellent and most accurate case.
Escatological Grand Slam.......2007-01-22
There is so much confusion and conjecture concerning Biblical end time events that one begins to be "tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine." I truly believe Mr. Busch has put an end to that by using a writing technique that allows the Scriptures to speak and teach what God says and means. This takes a lot of patience and many hours devoted to being a good Berean and this effort shines forth in this book (THE ASSYRIAN, as well as in the first book in the series, APPOINTED). David has traced the doctrine of the Assyrian from beginning to end as it is presented by God in the Bible.
There are entire Christian ministries devoted to the topic of escatology, men have devoted their lives to the topic. Shame on these ministries and men if they do not recognize the importance of the doctrine of the Assyrian considering the huge number of Scriptures God has devoted to the topic. Until these ministries and men come to terms with this doctrine they will continue to be "tossed to and fro by every wind of doctrine" and the saints who follow them will not be edified. This book (THE ASSYRIAN) as well as APPOINTED should be in the libraries of every believer who takes an special interest in Biblical end time events. The material is for men and women who love their Bibles and desire to be edified and faithful to every detail of God's program with Israel. "Times and seasons" are of absolute importance in God's program with Israel but also for our (the "one new man") edification as well. GET THE BOOK(S)!!!
Oh, by the way, it is obvious to all that Mark Twain of Niles (the review "you got to be kidding") did not read the book. He only read the cover and back flap and maybe a few pages in between. He would be lying through his teeth if he says otherwise. It is his Assyrian blood that is boiling!

Product Description
The somewhat pretentious title, In the Shadow of Satan might imply that this book is a philosophical dissertation on the subject of good and evil. It is not. It is a compilation of memories, first of a young boy, and then of a young adult, from the bloodiest period of 20th century Europeduring the days of the Second World War and Soviet occupation. These tragic events are described as seen through the young eyes of an eyewitness to history. This book does not pretend to furnish detailed information on the Jewishas well as Christianholocaust. Yet because the author lived daily in the shadow of those two satansNazism and communismhe startlingly reveals an even more true picture than contemporary writing could ever accomplish. Last year the author visited places that he described in this bookplaces of horror, of suffering, of inhumanity. In the August sunshine no trace of the awful past was visible. Those who lived through that satanic past can never escape its horror. The youth of today do not have a clue. This book must find its way to todays young intellectuals so that the horrors of the past are not repeated. Political correctness today skews the reality of the past. In this book one can see that people of different walks of life, nationalities and ethnic backgrounds were both good and evil. In the gloom of despairin some instances unprecedentedhuman nobility flowered like beautiful white lilies on stagnant black water. The American peopleeven professional historianshave quite limited information on the events which took place in Poland in the years 19391989. This simple tale provides a realistic picture of those days, and also shows that the human spirit is invincible and is able to survive and grow even in very difficult environments.

Book Description
Powerful, instructive, and full of humanity, this book challenges the current understanding of the war that has turned Mozambique--a naturally rich country--into the world's poorest nation. Before going to Mozambique, William Finnegan saw the war, like so many foreign observers, through a South African lens, viewing the conflict as apartheid's "forward defense." This lens was shattered by what he witnessed and what he heard from Mozambicans, especially those who had lived with the bandidos armado, the "armed bandits" otherwise known as the Renamo rebels. The shifting, wrenching, ground-level stories that people told combine to form an account of the war more local and nuanced, more complex, more African--than anything that has been politically convenient to describe.
A Complicated War combines frontline reporting, personal narrative, political analysis, and comparative scholarship to present a picture of a Mozambique harrowed by profound local conflicts--ethnic, religious, political and personal. Finnegan writes that South Africa's domination and destabilization are basic elements of Mozambique's plight, but he offers a subtle description and analysis that will allow us to see the post-apartheid region from a new, more realistic, if less comfortable, point of view.
Customer Reviews:
History is related to place.......2007-01-11
This is a great introductory book to understanding the war in Mozambique from independence until 1992. This would be the first book that I would recommend anyone wanting to know about the history behind current events not only in Mozambique, but in Southern Africa in general. Finnegan divided the war into sections based on the provinces of Mozambique, and then told the unique story relative to each region and how the war was influenced by Mozambicans and its neighbors. If anyone is interested in further reading on Mozambique and/or Southern Africa, the bibliography in the back of this book is exceptional. Most highly recommended!
Valuable and painful insights into Mozambique's past........2001-10-31
This is a lively and well written book which deals with the period of civil war in Mozambique. It was completed and published just before the conclusion of a successful peace process and so provides a particularly clear and powerful view of recent history. It is based on the author's travels within country during the war period and includes extensive interviews. The people he talked and worked with emerge as very vivid and lively characters. The support of the rebels by Rhodesia and South Africa, and the reasons for that support, are well described. A must read for anyone going to work in Mz, strongly recommended for the serious traveler as well.
Excellent Book.......2000-11-13
I bought this book before a trip to Mozambique in the summer of 2000. I found it very hard to find books about the country. I found this to be the most complete book as far as giving me a big picture of what the people had been through in recent years. The book has many anecdotes to show the typical western reader just how different life is in Mozambique. I found that the sense of poverty as well as generosity and warmth that the author communicated was verified by my own experience. It is the stories of the everyday person in the book that are so wonderful. Stories of the joy of children upon recieving a gift of a pen or the desire of young man for a pair of shoes.
The Mozambicans are amazing people. I apprciated them even more because I had read this this book. I was filled with wonder at the total complete wonderful humanity I encountered given the populations truly horrible experience of war.

I bought this book before a trip to Mozambique in the summer of 2000. It was very hard to find books about the country. I ended up coming to Amazon and jsut doing a search. This was one of the books I bought sight unseen. It turned out to be the best. It was the most complete book as far as giving me a big picture of what the people had been through in recent years. The book has many anecdotes to show the typical western reader just how different life is in Mozambique. A Masterpiece of Investigative Journalism.......1997-08-07
Anyone who wants to know about Mozambique's recent history must read this book--not just because it's full of names, facts and dates, but because it's a stunning work of exploration and exposure by a journalist who chose to travel through a viciously dangerous countryside to try to understand the reality of a nation devastated by fear. But more than that, this is also a superb piece of writing: engrossing from beginning to end, every page packed with vivid prose and thought-provoking discussion. I read this book in Mozambique in 1992 and it made an enormous difference
