Customer Reviews:
Earth Treasure series .......2007-07-16
This series is one of the most poorly conceived mineral guides I have ever seen. The author obviously knows very little about minerals e.g. "quartz rock crystal" and his maps are so poor you would be lucky to find anything using them. I agree with a previous reviewer who said "do not waste your time with these books." L. Dee, Geologist
Earth Treasures:The Northwestern Quadrant.......2001-12-31
This book covers only very well known locations and only of rocks and minerals suitable for lapidary. This book is a good 30 years out of date. In my own state, I have been to every location listed and 90% of them do not exist anymore or are no longer accessible. In addition, I know of several other areas that are well known but not listed. Don't waste your time with this book.

Customer Reviews:
Help for relocation or traveling!.......2001-04-27
I purchased this book before moving to Nashville and it was a tremendous help. The City Smart series breaks down a town into sections or even communities and then tells the reader what is available in that immediate area in a number of categories: entertainment, food, lodging, tourist attractions and more. All the places with in the book have been rated according to the author's personal criteria but when she said Brown's Diner has the best burger in Nashville, she wasn't kidding. Her rating scale is fair and very accurate. Easy to read maps are included in each section, with a larger one at the back which makes learning and navigating a new town a cinch! I found this book to be an invaluable resource for my relocation to Nashville. I tend to have lots of friends and family visit and it's been a fabulous tool for that. I've purchased other books in the City Smart series as well and was quite pleased with them, also. Even though I lived in Kansas City for 30 years, I found things in the City Smart Kansas City book I was completely unaware of. I am certain the City Smart Nashville book has increased my pleasure of living in Nashville. If you are visiting Nashville, looking into one of Nashville's fine colleges or moving here, you NEED this book!

The Princess Dairies.......2005-03-16
Mia has always been labeled as one thing, a freak! Mia, who is a freshman in high school, finds out that she is the heir to Genovia. Everyday after school, Mia has to attend princess lessons with her less than friendly grandma. Also, her mom is dating her teacher. Mia tries very hard to keep her being a princess a secret, but someone blabbed, because of this, Mia's best friend will not talk to her because they got in a huge fight about secrets. Mia however, stands up for herself, against Lily for the first time in her life. Mia has another problem, is also the only freshman who doesn't have date for the cultural dance.
I really enjoyed this book. It was funny, and smart, but a little perverted. The Princess Dairies was the first book I liked that was written in Dairy form. I recommend this book to any girl. There are a total of 3 books in the series, and Mia's journey to become a princess continues in the second book, Princess in the Spotlight. I can't wait to read the second book.
Perfect Princess: A Fun Read Fit For a Princess.......2005-02-20
Just who in scociety is an appropriate role model for rising princesses like ourselfs? Ask Grandmere. From Anastasia to the princess and the pea, you'll definately find at least one role model, as long as you don't like Xena. Of course, the most appropriate role model for anyone is Grandmere. Or Buffy or Princess Leia. Just don't tell Grandmere. In addition to this, Paolo and Sebastiono explain the princapessa's reign over fashion and which princesses looked like mods (models), Tina fills you in on the married princesses, Lilly dishes on powerful princesses, and Michael talks about his ideal pincesses. Sprinkled throughout are random acts of princess (if you have milk in your tea, it's NOT VEAGAN, Mia) and commentary by Mia. I found some of her comments rude, insulting, and not funny, but aside from this the book was a delightful easy read.
Perfect Princess: A Princess Diaries Book (Princess Diaries).......2004-10-04
This book is good for a laugh... it's not really a reading book though.
Unexpected.......2004-08-29
I expected this book to be about Mia Thermopolis and her princessness but it's just a non-fiction book about royalty role-models. It's good if you like that sort of stuff, but I don't so that's why I gave it 2 stars.
Charming and Witty.......2004-04-15
Me being the HUGE Princess Diaries fan, loved this new book in which Mia introduces you to the many princess of the world and teaches the concepts on how to become a perfect princess. From how to eat, talk, stand, make an incredible entrance, or how to wear a tiara, Mia creates another funny page-turner with these hiliarious questions of what makes a perfect princess. From old princesses, young princesses, real princesses, to fiction princesses, Mia analyzes how each exhibits the sings of a true princess. My favorite had to be WuZeTian(I'm Asian and Chinese). Couldn't believe she was in there. Mia just about covered every princess I could ever think about.
Like Princess Lessons this book should probably only be read by true Princess Diaries fans.(I did find it slightly better than Princess Lessons) I really enjoyed it, though I could tell if someone would find it kinda boring if they weren't a true fan. You don't have to read this book to get the series since nothing is connected. It is just a fun book for those of us who dream of becoming princesses one day.

Literary Journalism
ASIN: 1558492526 |
Book Description
During the 1960s, such works as Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and Joan Didion's Slouching Towards Bethlehem were cited as examples of the "new journalism." True stories that read like novels, they combined the journalist's task of factual reporting with the art of fictional narration.
Yet as John C. Hartsock shows in this revealing study, the roots of this distinctive form of writing-whether called new journalism, literary journalism, or creative nonfiction-can be traced at least as far back as the late nineteenth century. In the decades following the American Civil War, Stephen Crane, Lafcadio Hearn, and other journalists challenged the notion, then just emerging, that the reporter's job was to offer a concise statement of the "objective truth." Drawing on the techniques of the realistic novel, these writers developed a new narrative style of reporting aimed at lessening the distance between observer and observed, subject and object.
By the 1890s, Hartsock argues, literary journalism had achieved critical recognition as a new form of writing, different not only from "objective" reporting but also from the sensationalistic "yellow press" and at times the socially engaged "muckrakers." In the twentieth century, the form has continued to evolve and maintain its vitality, despite being marginalized by the academic establishment.
A former journalist who covered Capitol Hill for UPI and reported on the collapse of the Soviet Union for the San Francisco Examiner, Hartsock brings a fresh and informed perspective to the issues he examines. The result is a concise introduction to the genesis and development of a significant literary genre.
"A substantial, well-written, and well-argued book that is likely to become a standard work in literary journalism." (Norman Sims, editor of Literary Journalism in the Twentieth Century)

Hotel California: The True-Life Adventures of Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young, Mitchell, Taylor, Browne, Ronstadt, Geffen, the Eagles, and Their Many Friends
ASIN: 0060763450
Release Date: 2007-05-01 |
Book Description
Told in the words of his musical accomplices, fellow–travelers, friends, and lovers, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead" is an intimate and unusual biography of fabled singer–songwriter Warren Zevon, the musical force behind such dark, witty rock–and–roll classics as "Werewolves of London" and "Roland, the Headless Thompson Gunner."
Narrated by Crystal Zevon, Zevon's former (and only) wife, it draws on interviews with Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Linda Rondstadt, Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham, the Everly Brothers, and a host of other denizens of Southern California's influential rock scene to tell the story of the original "Excitable Boy": literary hoodlum, OCD sufferer, brilliant songwriter, and rock–and–roll icon.
Customer Reviews:
Warren Zevon fan's perspective.......2007-10-09
I've been a Warren Zevon fan since the '70s when I first heard "Werewolves of London." I first heard "Lawyers, Guns and Money" in '79 or '80 when I snuck into my first 21 bar as an underaged teen. I saw him in concert twice. I watched the VH1 documentary. So I had to buy the book. It's a fascinating look at an extremely talented, tortured man.
When I first saw the format, I was a little disappointed. I'd expected a narrative, but saw that the entire book was written in interview excerpts. But I thought it worked. Lots of pictures.
My only complaint: It was hard to keep track of the dates when events transpired--I would have liked to see more chronological references. And where were David Lindley's anecdotes?
I highly recommend this book. It's haunting.
Thanks Crystal for Painting a Complete Portrait of Warren.......2007-09-21
I read this book in 4 days, and I can't remember the last book I read. Crystal Zevon does a wonderful job of conveying Warren's life and times. As well as personal insights, there are points of view from many others, including Warren. I really feel like I got the full picture by reading several versions of the same event. I cursed, I laughed, I cried and at one point I declared "Warren's a God". Of course Warren was a human like the rest of us. He just happened to be a human who was a great song writer and entertainer. Enjoy Crystal's book and Enjoy Every Sandwich.
Sex, Drugs & Rock and Roll.......2007-09-12
with heavy emphasis on the sex and drugs. If you're looking for some insight as to what went on in the studio, how Warren's songs were constructed, details behind each album....forget it. If you want to learn all about Zevon's personal life, the drug addiction (and his subsequent withdrawal), his rabid sex addiction, the women (verbally, mentally and sometimes physically abused by Zevon) who seemed to never go away...what IS it with groupies, anyway?...this is the book for you. It's like watching a train wreck in slow motion. And just when you think he's straightened his life out by kicking drugs and alcohol, the seemingly uncontrollable sex addiction takes over. Fascinating stuff, though I probably won't play a Zevon album for awhile. Sometimes the distant image of a favorite rock star is best left that way.
The Life and Times of an 'Excitable Boy'..........2007-09-11
Sometimes its' hard to find out the truth about your heroes. You'll read some un-authorized biography of a celebrity and half way through you'll put the book down and realize it's nothing more than a tell-all, hatchet job. You tell yourself, "I liked this person's public persona, enjoyed what they contributed to our culture and I really don't want to know these kind of facts about their personal life. In other words you really didn't want know that your heroes could be such as*h*les. It sort of ruins it for you.
Crytal Zevon's biography of her ex-husband, rocker/singer/songwriter, Warren Zevon, "I'll Sleep When I'm Dead: The Dirty Life and Times of Warren Zevon" is an aptly titled book, which is the exception to this notion. It is an oral history using the voices of the late (Warren died of cancer in 2003) rocker's friends, family, lovers, collegues and musical peers to chronicle both his life and career.
Make no mistake about it, this book dishes the dirt and describes in detail, some of the more horrible aspects of Zevon's life, which included harrowing battles with alcoholism and the disease, OCD. It shows a man who had an almost Jekyll & Hyde personality. One moment he could be loving, kind...your best friend. The next moment he could be cold, callus and dismissive, ready to cut you out of his life over the smallest things. But despite these apects of his personality, It dosn't come across as a bitter tell-all. You can tell, that the people who contributed to this book really loved and cared about this guy, despite his many faults. In the end the book paints an intimate, moving portrait of a complex man, who was literally a musical genuis in his artistic, professional life, yet, led a very messy, dysfunctional, personal life. The vibe I get from reading this book is that he will be dearly missed by a lot of people, who were important to him.
There are a lot of great quotes in this book, but my favorite comes from Warren himself. His ex-wife, Crystal quotes a conversation she had with him towards the end of his life about the writing of this book in which Warren said the following, "You are my witness. The story is yours. But you gotta promise, you'll tell 'em the whole truth, even the awful, ugly parts. Cuz, that is the guy who wrote them excitable songs". That just about says it all...
If you're interested in a behind the scenes look- get it!.......2007-09-04
I read this is 24 hours. I thought the writing style was very enjoyable and the nitty gritty details were out there for all to see (as it seems Warren wanted it). I think my favorite biography is Belushi by Judy Belushi Pisano but this is a close second.

Book Description
The concept of the citizen soldier is not new in Canada. Ever since the Battle of the Plains of Abraham determined the course of history for North America, there have been many examples of citizens setting aside their tools to take up arms in defense of the country. In his diaries, author Kurt Grant describes the inner workings of the military as he saw it during his tour of duty as a reservist who was chosen to go with 1 RCR as part of UNPROFOR, Rotation 5 to CANBAT One in Croatia, in the fall and winter of 1994-1995.

Donald Trump doesn't pull any punches when he surveys the American political scene: Pat Buchanan's "totally lost it," Al Gore is "an able, underrated man who seems confused," and Bill Bradley is simply a "disaster." But the real estate tycoon has some ideas of his own about how the United States should be run, and he shares them with the potential electorate for the 2000 presidential race in The America We Deserve. There aren't too many surprises here: Trump lambastes the government bureaucracy that's made a mess of the civic infrastructure, particularly the public school systems; he supports creating opportunities for business developers (both large and small); and he's tougher than tough on crime. He's also prepared to come down hard on America's enemies abroad, such as China, North Korea, and Cuba. Among the more interesting aspects of his platform is his desire to do away completely with soft money in campaign financing and allow unlimited personal contributions--along with full disclosure of political contributions, updated daily on the Internet.
The America We Deserve is an effective combination of Trump's straight-shooting personality and policy-wonk data points. As another American presidential campaign heats up, Trump raises issues that will force voters to give serious consideration to what they want in a candidate. --Ron Hogan
Book Description
In his most recent book, The America We Deserve Donald Trump shares his vision of the future. Donald Trump can afford to be more plainspoken than most politicians. He is not compromised by alliances and not connected to special-interest groups. In the political game, the politicians, the lobbyists, even the media get their marching orders from their financial backers. Trump has one financial backer: Trump. Throughout The America We Deserve, Trump points out problems and offers sensible, practical solutions. To help him formulate his ideas into well-researched and workable policies, Trump has secured the support and counsel of a group of domestic and foreign policy advisers, all with White House or senior policy experience. In his book, Trump lays out his concerns and solutions, virtually a platform on the major political issues facing our country. But this is not a dry, public-policy book. This is Donald Trump taking on the issues in his no-nonsense, unvarnished manner, offering populists, provocative, and sometimes dramatic solutions that no other politician would dare put foward. In three best-selling books, Donald Trump used stories of his deal-making and his dazzling life to captivate readers with his vision of just how far you can go if you dream the American Dream. In the America We Deserve, Trump takes all that he has learned from his successes, his failures, and his extraordinary comeback and uses those lessons to build a vision of what needs to be done to ensure that the American Dream he dreamed continues to be a possibility for everyone.

One of Donalds best books ever! A must read, no matter what you think of the guy........2007-10-10
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can say I was very surprised, captivated and motivated into action after reading this book. With the many different sides of Donald Trump in the public eye, this side may be one you have never seen nor heard completely. This isn't a book about The Donald, this is a book about The America We Deserve and should be living in today. A must read for everyone who believes that things aren't going the way they should be and looking for something actionable to do about it.
Truly the America We Deserve.......2007-09-18
I had heard such great things about this book that I had to read it. I was about 7 years too late, but I still think the book is good and worth reading. My only debate was Trump's weak argument to correct the school system. He really didn't have a plan to correct it other than stop feeding more money into the system. Other than that one area, the book was very appealing. I think his idea of having our country run the way a successful business CEO operates is worth a shot.
The best idea in the book is Trump's plan to impose a one time 14.25% tax on individuals whose net worth exceeds $10 million, which is a mere 1% of our population. This tax money would be used to pay off our national debt and restore the social security program. I know this tax would probably not be able to pay off our national debt today, but this is the kind of idea that would only evolve from the CEO of a company that has goals to meet in terms of the overall bottom line of their company's annual performance. Ideas of taxation on the richest individuals in America are far better than creating additional debt for our country, so that's why I agree with Trump that someone with a great business mind should run for President.
Another interesting chapter in the book was his prediction of another terrorist attack that would make a previous one in New York look feeble. A lot of the chapter mentioned the bioterrorism that we would encounter (i.e. anthrax), and I actually had to check the copyright on this book when I read this chapter.
I do recommend reading this book, but be aware that it's a bit outdated. The plans for national debt, social security, freedom from terrorists are outstanding. It makes you wonder how things might have turned out different for America had Trump run for President.
Who Can Disagree With The Title?.......2005-09-09
I think most anyone would agree with Mr. Trump that the America he describes within this book would be an ideal nation. The problem is, Donald Trump does not know anymore than anyone else about how to achieve the problems he very practically identifies. The math of what's lacking in this book could be described with an equation like this: A+X=C. A is where we are today in the America we have, C is the "America we deserve" now what is X that would get us to C? I have no idea. I wish someone knew.
But as far as Trump's observations go, he is frequently correct and in his "idealistic pragmatism" he has an observant eye when it comes to citing certain less than ideal, even intolerable, situations.
I liked Trump's comment that money is not the key to fixing America's education system. He demonstrated how in real dollars we spend more on education these days than in the recent past and yet see less achievement in return. His biting, dead-on observation that the teachers' union's position that salary increases for classroom instructors would elevate teachers' performances is akin to them saying, "Bribe us more and we'll agree to put more effort into the job we're already taking money to try our hardest at now."
VERY good point!
Trump was also correct in this 1999 book in foreseeing another terrorist attack on New York City that would make the 1993 World Trade Center attack seem minor. That predicition came tragically true on September 11, 2001. His warnings to prepare for further attacks are more true in 2005 than they were in the Clinton Years. As I'm writing this, Hurricane Katrina is in the headlines and the lack of coordinated management in helping its victims shows how unprepared this mighty nation truly is for disasters of a monumental scale. I'm sure our ever-patient foes are learning from this and I hope we Americans are as well.
But lest I come across as doling out more praise to Donald Trump than his book, sound though it is, merits, I have to come around to the fact that Trump's critial troubleshooting does not contain enough suggestions of how to improve the things he says are wrong. He's a smart man, not without faults, but he understands how business operates and I wish he had provided more insights in this book into how we can reach the hypothetical point C that would be the United States he takes delight in describing in his writings.
Classic Trump prose mixed with logic and wit.......2003-11-16
It's about time a guy like Donald Trump published this book. Whether you love him, hate him, or want him to fix his hair, The Donald presents fresh takes on age-old arguments and explains why he has what it takes.
While every other candidate in 2000 was writing books about their youths, military service, or whatever else, Trump uses his get-down-to-business style to attack issues (and people) and offer quick-witted solutions. The fact that I disagree on a few points does not take away from the quality of the book. If you want a straight-shooting tome from a guy who takes care of things himself, The America We Deserve is a must-read.
Trump beat Gore and he didn't even run!.......2003-11-10
According to surveys taken at that time, Trump was ahead of Gore and just behind G.W.Bush. No doubt if Trump would have run, Gore would have blamed him too!
After reading this book (actually re-reading) I really wish Trump would have run for President. He has some very good views on how to make this country stronger and certaintly would b e a better choice than the comedy team (RE: Democrats) that are running.
I particularly like Mr. Trumps ideas on how to save social security.
Mr. Trump, if you are reading this, you should consider running in 2004. Mr. Bush could use some real competition. Obviously right now, he doesn't have any. Your views could make for a stronger America.
