Real information on what to do, geared more for the adventurer.Maps nothing special.Brief history coverage. No real prices, only "budget, moderate." Not a complete travel guide, but gives good ideas of what to do on the islands. Use this for some non-touristy sites and to do's, but buy more complete guide for hotels and car rentals, etc. Covers all islands, though not real detailed.

        Book Description

A sister and brother's search for their missing parents uncovers a mysterious secret society in an action-filled sea-and-land saga centered in 1920s Shanghai.

For Joshua Mowll, it was the surprise of a lifetime. There, among the archives inherited from his great-aunt Rebecca MacKenzie, was a 1920s journal recounting the thrilling and dangerous adventures of fifteen-year-old Rebecca and her younger brother, Doug, in the wake of their parents' mysterious disappearance in the deserts of China. Now carefully re-created in a lavish volume — complete with cloth binding and a journal-style elastic clasp — the siblings' tale begins aboard the Expedient, their uncle's enigmatic research ship, and moves at a breathless pace through the streets of Shanghai and on to a terrifying island fortress. Along the way, Doug and Becca encounter an ancient order of Chinese mercenaries, a brutal pirate warlord, a feisty Texan heiress, and a stolen cache of a volatile explosive called zoridium. By their saga's end, the intrepid duo has exposed a murderous plot involving their parents and uncovered a high-minded secret society hidden from the world for hundreds of years. Interspersed are such "archival" elements as:

        — elaborate diagrams and maps
        — vintage photos and illustrations
        — documents with stamps, seals, and watermarks
        — four full-color gatefolds, the largest a six-page foldout
        — extensive appendices and notes

Painstakingly researched and packed with authentic detail, OPERATION RED JERICHO is the first of three nonstop-action tales of intrigue by first-time author Joshua Mowll — historical fiction at its finest.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Wonderful book.......2007-08-19

I read this book when I was 15, and greatly enjoyed it. It is well written, and keeps you reading. It mixes together many things which youth like- swordfights, martial arts, pirates, seafaring, being on their own and on a mission to save their parents... even though it may sound as if it's just a boys book, it's not. My daughter has read it as well and enjoyed it; in fact, she bought the sequel.

        3 out of 5 stars A good beginning.......2007-01-03

Let's begin by stating that this book is well designed. The drawings and diagrams of the vehicles, weapons, devices, etc were great. The detail was very interesting and well appreciated.

That being said, I thought the story was good, but not great. I am keeping in mind the fact that this is the first book in a trilogy. I didn't find the two children's characters to be very likable. They lie and go around the adults in the quest to find their parents. I hope the characters are further developed as the story continues.

The story involves the writer who inherits a house full of secret information regarding the Guild of Specialists. The writer publishes the findings from his aunts archives, and thus the story. It is a very good premise, but as I mentioned the characters are a little weak.

I would recommend this books to young readers. The story is paced well and moves quickly. Some of the terms and devices described in the sotry may be a little too technical for the younger group (third graders), but I feel they would still enjoy it.

        4 out of 5 stars A Fun Read.......2006-12-08

A very fun and engaging story set in a time and place I know very little about. The artwork, fold-outs and gee-wiz aspects of the story are especially well done. Some of the writing is a little flat; not up to the standards set by the artwork. I bought the book for me and am very pleased to report that one of my boys (age 11) has picked it up and is quite engrossed.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Book, when is the movie coming out?.......2006-11-16

This book is a lot of fun. Inventive, good characters, not overwritten. Fast paced. One of the more delightful books I've read in a long time. I hope some studio makes a movie out of this. The detail in the illustations, the additional information all makes the story much more full and rich. Can't wait to read the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Full of twists, turns and very cool characters!!!!.......2006-10-25

I love this book. Operation Red Jericho is right up there with Phillip Pullman's Sally Lockhart series. This book is filled with evil villians, really good good guys and a really drawing mystery.
I also loved how Joshua Mowll used Becka's diary, real maps, blueprints, and real bad guys. This is an historical ficition book through and through. I would seriously recomend this book to any Phillip Pullman lovers.

                  Book Description

High levels of uncertainty are a trademark of geological investigations, such as the search for oil, diamonds, and uranium. So business ventures related to geology, such as mineral exploration and mining, are naturally associated with higher risks than more traditional entrepreneurial ventures in industry and economy. There are also a number of dangerous natural hazards, e.g. earthquakes, volcanic activities, and inundations, that are the direct result of geological processes. It is of paramount interest to study them all, to describe them, to understand their origin and - if possible - to predict them. While uncertainties, geological risks and natural hazards are often mentioned in geological textbooks, conferences papers, and articles, no comprehensive and systematic evaluation has so far been attempted. This book, written at an appropriately sophisticated level to deal with complexity of these problems, presents a detailed evaluation of the entire problem, discussing it from both, the geological and the mathematical aspects.

                      Book Description

Don Sheldon has been called 'Alaska's bush pilot among bush pilots', but he was also just one man in a fragile airplane who, in the end, was solely responsible for each mission he flew, be it a high-risk landing to the rescue of others from certain death in the mountains of Alaska or the routine delivery of supplies to a lonely homesteader. Read this book to learn how a hero was born, and also how he made his courageous journey to the unknown skies of dealing with cancer.

I have always treasured this book and other stories about Don Sheldon's adventures in the Alaskan interior. Don came to Talkeetna shortly after my Dad moved there, and they became great friends. I remember stories about Don's flying that Dad would tell me, from the time I was a small boy, so when he gave me a copy of the book it was like I was reliving adventures that had first-hand knowledge of. The book is great, and portrays a true pioneer of Alaskan aviation.

4 out of 5 stars An inspiring story of a remarkable man.......2001-09-18

I was steered to this book through contacts with several alumni of the former Williamsport Technical Institute(predecessor of my employer, Pennsylvania College of Technology), where Don Sheldon received his airframe and powerplant license. The only appropriate word to describe his exploits is "amazing." It seems as if every time he stepped into his airplane, he stepped into the jaws of death, and it's hard to believe that he died (in 1975) from an illness, not a crash. Don Sheldon's courage and dedication should serve as examples to us all. A must-read for anyone who likes adventure.

Run a safe and successful crisis negotiation—from start to finish!

The Elements of Police Hostage and Crisis Negotiations: Critical Incidents and How to Respond to Them reduces the negotiation procedures for hostage, barricaded, and suicide incidents to their basic elements, providing quick and easy access to the information you need-from the initial call-out to the final debriefing. Based on field-tested principles proven to work, the book also includes newly developed and highly specialized techniques for more experienced negotiators. Author James L. Greenstone provides a user-friendly, step-by-step guide to the intervention and negotiation process that will help you get the job done—right.

Designed for day-to-day, on-the-scene use, The Elements of Police Hostage and Crisis Negotiations is a practical handbook for experienced professionals and novices that can also be used as a supplementary textbook for criminal justice, crisis intervention, and psychology coursework. Each chapter contains useful checklists, procedural notes, tables, strategy worksheets, and forms, and the book includes special indices for quick reference in addition to a traditional index. Dr. Greenstone, a police mental health consultant and psychologist who served as Director of the Psychological Services Unit of the Fort Worth Police Department in Texas, uses a simple and direct format that emphasizes procedures, action and results, leaving theoretical discussions for another time and place. The book examines the negotiation process from start to finish, including preincident preparations, first response responsibilities, responding to the call-out, arriving at the scene, preparing to negotiate, making contact, preparing for the surrender, post-incident tasks, preparing equipment, and more.

Topics covered in The Elements of Police Hostage and Crisis Negotiations include:
                                legal considerations
                                telephone surveillance guidelines

                                  Book Description

Despite a decades-long international moratorium on commercial whaling, one fleet has continued to hunt and kill whales in the waters surrounding Antarctica. Refusing to let this defiance go unchallenged, the environmental organization Greenpeace began dispatching expeditions to the region in an effort to intercept the whalers and use nonviolent means to stop their lethal practice.

Over the past decade, Kieran Mulvaney led four such expeditions as a campaigner and coordinator. In The Whaling Season, he recounts those voyages in all their drama, disappointments, strain, and elation, giving readers a behind-the-scenes look at the hazards and triumphs of life as an environmental activist on the high seas. The author also explores the larger struggles underlying the expeditions, drawing on the history of commercial whaling and Antarctic exploration, the development of Greenpeace, and broader scientific and political efforts to conserve marine life. He presents a rich portrait of the current struggles and makes an impassioned plea for protection of some of the world’s most spectacular creatures.

For armchair adventurers, polar enthusiasts, and anyone concerned about marine conservation and continued hunting of the world’s whales, The Whaling Season is an engrossing and informative tale of adventure set in one of the Earth’s last great wilderness areas.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Beautifully worded........2003-11-28

Kieran Mulvaney, an author who has published an extensive list of articles on matters of science and the environment, recounts his adventures and experiences while on expedition to protect whales in this book.

After co-founding The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, (originally called The Whale Conservation Society), along with Sean Whyte, Mulvaney embarked upon a life of activism that takes him from his boyhood home typewriter to the frigid seas off Antarctica.

As a member of four different whale protection exhibitions, Mulvaney has worked for and alongside members of Greenpeace, encountering some degree of success charting frozen waters, as well as political minefields. Through it all, his mission has remained the same - to protect the whales.

An early history of the whaling industry, as well as that of Greenpeace, (originally known as the Don't Make A Wave Committee), is covered extensively. Modern day whaling practices are explained - including ways in which some countries continue to thwart the worldwide ban on whaling practices by claiming they are hunting the mammals for the purpose of science.

Written in easy to understand terms (in other words, you don't have to be a biologist to get it), this book is an entertaining and interesting read, although some readers might be offended by the frequent use of colorful language. Especially enjoyable is the passage describing the majesty of icebergs, "I pictured them building up slowly over millions and millions of years and then one day, with a violent, ear-shattering crack, breaking away from the ice shelf and setting off on their own. From that moment they were doomed, destined to erode under the steady assault from wind and waves until nothing was left. . . ancient witnesses of eons past, . . . " Beautifully worded. --Michelle Smith
