Book Description
This book plunges the reader into the heart of the sea. It is an elegantly-written account of one photojournalist's experience studying marine natural history and ecology. Illustrated with classic black and white photography, and annotated with references to classic marine literature, this book takes the reader from California to New Guinea, Fiji, Palau, and Tonga, to the Caribbean, to Alaska, and back again. Along the way, a quest to shed light on marine limits, symbiosis, and biogeography ties the adventures together. It will appeal to anyone who snokels, swims, scuba dives, surfs, studies marine biology, or loves the sea.
Customer Reviews:
Adventures and Serious Scholarship.......2004-06-19
This is a meticulously researched book that reflects the author's deep commitment to the ocean environment. At the same time Dr. Vanstrum describes his adventures while surfing and diving all over the world. It's a fun, serious book.
Relying on interviews and communications with some of the foremost authorities on coral reefs (Dr. Richard Grigg) and ocean fisheries, Dr. Vanstrum makes a compelling case for the establishment of meaningful marine reserves in this country.
It is a shame that costs prevented the publication of Dr. Vanstrum's marvelous photographs in color. I have seen the originals in color and they are breathtaking. Even the black and whites reflect the skill and commitment of a superb photographer. For a sample of his photography in color I would recommend a visit to his Web site: www.Vanstrum.net.
Wealth of ocean information.......2004-04-09
This book is really well researched and presented in a very entertaining way. The author has a vast wealth of experience and understanding about the intricate balances of the ocean. If you've ever wanted to know, "what's down there?" or "what's so great about the oceans?" this is the book for you. I've been interested in the ocean and its life, and this book satisfies my curiosity.
Substantial and delightful.......2003-07-20
Vanstrum has written a book that balances scientific substance with the sheer delight of scuba diving. The 18 chapters of The Saltwater Wilderness are set mainly as trips to exotic places (like Fiji, Tonga, and Palau) and the author is masterful at conveying the human and humane character of the people and places he visits. But what makes this book different from many of its peers is that Vanstrum uses his knowledge of marine science to highlight the amazing things he sees beneath the waves in a way that makes them even more extraordinary.
For example, in chapter 8 the image of a seven foot barracuda floating over a brain coral (in Honduras) becomes a meditation on evolutionary history and in the process helps explain why THAT fish is stationed exactly over THAT coral. In one of my favorite chapters (13) I learned that for the millions of bacteria living in every liter of sea water, the ocean does not behave as a liquid, but more like viscous honey. Meaning? Where surfers see big waves crashing on underlying rocks, the microscopic bacteria riding those waves feel nothing of the kind--they live in a still place. It is this skillful contrasting of scales of both time and place that makes Vanstrum's book a very satisfying read.
The Saltwater Wilderness.......2003-05-04
This is a personal account of youthful excitement plus much mature information. Worthy of a scholar, a scientist and a surfer-diver.

Packed with advice that's targeted to parents who want to give their kids an exciting vacation while traveling in the Southeast U.S., this new title in the Unofficial Guides series offers:
- Exciting locations to take kids, including places to stay and fun things to do

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book for Family Travel.......2004-03-05
I bought this book while planning a driving vacation through the southeast with kids, ranging in age from 8 - 15. I found the book to be extremely helpful in planning where to go, attractions to visit, hotels, and definitely geared to families with children. Something for everyone. I read it cover to cover and still refer to it when we visit the area.
A good overview of the area.......2002-03-03
I had "The Unofficial Guide to Florida with Kids" and found it to be extremely useful. Since we were planning a trip to SC, I decided to buy this book. Unfortunately, the area we were planning on visiting (Hilton Head) was not included in this book.
Of course, they can't cover every area when the book is for the entire Southeast, I should have looked at it at the bookstore first. If you are undecided on where you are travelling in the SE, this book is for you, it's very informative on many of the major areas, with great ratings on different restaurants and tourist spots.
a good resource for keeping kids entertained.......2000-12-19
I like traveling with my children, but I admit there are times when it's more work than pleasure. I read several guides when planning a trip to Louisiana, but this one had the most kid-friendly information of them all. And it wasn't just of interest to kids -- I found lots of neat events and places that weren't mentioned in other guides my husband and I enjoyed as well.

Star Crossed Lovers
When Romiette Cappelle meets Julio Montague, she feels as though she has met the soul mate who can rescue her from her recurring nightmare about fire and water. But like the Shakespearean characters whose names echo theirs, Romiette and Julio discover that not everyone approves of their budding romance. In their case, it is because Romiette is African-American and Julio is Hispanic, and the Devildogs, a dangerous local gang, violently oppose their interracial relationship.
When the Devildogs threaten to teach them a lesson, Romiette and Julio come up with a risky plan to escape from the gang's fearsome shadow. But things go terribly awry, and the two find themselves caught up in a deadly reality more frightening that Romiette's nightmare -- and in a desperate struggle to avoid the tragic fate of Shakespeare's famous young lovers.
Customer Reviews:
Romiette and Julio.......2007-09-30
Purchased for reading in a high school intensive reading class. So far, three students have read the book and recommended it to other students.
They said it was a great story about teenagers and the struggles in life.
Simplistic.......2007-06-08
Romiette is a high school student who has lived her entire life in Cincinnati. She is black and lives with her parents, who are both successful--her father as a news reporter on television and her mother as a store owner. Romiette has never had a real boyfriend, but then she meets Julio online one afternoon.
Julio has just moved to Cincinnati from Texas, and he hates it, especially the cold weather, which he never had back home in Texas. His parents wanted to leave to get away from the gangs that were running rampant in Julio's school. Unfortunately, the gangs in Cincinnati are just as bad, especially the Devildogs, a black gang at Romiette and Julio's school.
When Romi and Julio talk online enough to realize they are going to the same school, they decide to meet for lunch one day. The two of them really hit it off; there is a definite spark between them that makes them want to spend all of their free time together. The Devildog gang doesn't like it, though. They don't want one of the pretty black girls at their school associating with a Hispanic boy. They threaten Romi and Julio and try to make them stop seeing each other. Romi and Julio don't know what they can do, but then they come up with a plan to secretly videotape the threats and bring that tape to the news, to expose this gang. When they put the plot into action, though, things go terribly wrong and Romi and Julio's lives are in danger.
I liked seeing the two families who started off not liking each other come together in order to help their children. I also liked the characters of Ben and Destiny. Both were incredibly vivid and really good friends.
This book, however, was incredibly simplistic, almost to the point of being insulting. The characters kept mentioning "Romeo and Juliette," which was distracting. If the author was going to play on the Shakespeare story, she ought to have been a bit more subtle than she was. It also seemed to me that exposing a dangerous gang on television wouldn't be the best way to ensure safety.
Romiette and Julio by; Sharon Draper.......2007-04-30
By:Anastasia Lucien
Take a moment and think back to your past relationships. Have they ever been with some one of a different background? If so, have you ever been criticized because of your mixed relationship? Well don't feel alone and hurt because Romiette and Julio share your pain. The novel, Romiette and Julio is written by Sharon Draper who takes the Shakespeare written play Romeo and Juliet and turns it into a more interesting piece of writing that anyone can enjoy.
Romiette and Julio is very much like Romeo and Juliet with similar names and a similar plot -two teens in deep love but no one appreciates it. And the diffrence is how Romiette and Julio exspress their love through a mixed relationship. Romiette and Julio first meet on an internet chat line, not realizing that they go to the same school and live in the same city. At first Romiette listens to her friend -Destiny's advice and doesn't really trust Julio. But they soon get to learn about each other in a private chat room, now I won't tell you what they've said because I want you to find out yourself. But any way Romiette and Julio make an arrangement to see each other at lunch time in school. But soon later on romiette and Julio face many troubles with a gang called the devil dogs because of their mixed relations ships, Romiette-African American and Julio-Hispanic/Mexican.
But later in the story Romiette and Julio make an arrangement to show the deadly gang that nothing can pull them apart. And when they try to pull that move they are put through hell. And Romiette has to face her biggest fear-water. And Julio has to face his most fear-losing Romiette. This whole love scene in these two teens life can connect to the whole world where it shows how terrible things can be for a mixed couple, and the hell that they are put through. The theme of this story is how true love can be found even when no one agrees with your decision.
I would recommend this to tweens, teens, and young adults who love to have the picture of the scene in their heads and who love drama in their books. This novel was the recipient of the first Coretta Scott King genesis award, and the sales rink is-12474.
Great Book.......2007-04-08
The first time I read Romiette and Julio was when I was 13 in the 8th Grade. I think this is amazing. I truely loved it. Its one of my favorites. Sharon M Draper is an amazing author and I'd reccomend this book to anyone who is into romance.
A modern twist to a classic.......2007-02-02
Romiette and Julio is a great book about love, friendship and cultural diversity. I have read many of Sharon Drapers books and Romiette and Julio is by far one of my favorites. This book will keep you intruged the whole time. There is a lot of foreshadowing in the book which makes it exciting and fun to read.Drapers use of imagery was also very good, she made it so that you can see and feel everything that was going on in the story. This book is a contemporary twist to the classic tale of love and sacrifice. By writing this book I think that Draper has help young readers understand shakespeare more by modernizing the story. This was a book that kept me reading until the last page. It is truly a compelling story and I would defininlty reccomend it.

Customer Reviews:
Applications, but not very detailed..........2002-08-26
This book presents a lot of applications for PCR.
It's interesting to read, but sometimes unclear, and it lacks detailed protocols (the one given in each chapter isn't very useful, in general).
The three first chapters are useless, but the rest of the book is still valuable.
Why not buy it, if you already have all the PCR-litterature.
a must-have for a molecular biology lab.......2000-06-22
I would like to say that this is a great book on the technology of PCR. It provides the principles, applications, modifications and innovations of this technology and is really helpful in any molecular biology lab. (you can bet it offers a lot more than the conventional stuff in the red book, blue book, current protocols and whatsoever) and as a matter of fact, i have the former books of the series such as PCR protocols and PCR strategies, yet i think the book is much worth the money. it is comprehensive and easy to read--you do not have to read it through of course, but it is always a nice help when you hit some problems--so it would be really nice to have a copy of this book in a lab which does PCR often. besides, this book has much new applications of this method, which are currently very hot in the field of biology--like genomics and microarrays. i would like to recommend this book to the colleagues.

Book Description
From one of golf's funniest, most popular players comes another hilarious look inside the pro sport and the people who play it.
For nearly thirty years, Peter Jacobsen-player, entertainer, (off-) color commentator, television host, golf-course designer, and entrepreneur (but, no, he doesn't do windows)-has been a favorite of fans and fellow golfers, and when he published Buried Lies in 1993, it was an immediate success. But a lot has happened since then-to him, to his colleagues, and to the game itself-and so it's high time he launched a mulligan.
From Jack Nicklaus to Michelle Wie, Tiger Woods to Vijay Singh, Jacobsen takes you behind the scenes of the pro tour like no one else can, as he tells you what it's like to play the PGA and Champions tours simultaneously ("from flat-belly to fat-belly"); how John Daly nearly decapitated a spectator; what players really say to each other in the locker room; why getting on SportsCenter is not always a good thing; how Payne Stewart got back at Paul Azinger for beating him in a tournament (moral: always check your shoes before you put them on); why loaning your caddy to Tiger Woods can be a mistake; what made Arnold Palmer change his shorts; and how Jacobsen won the U.S. Open (well . . . kind of).
Throughout, it is a book filled with wit, warmth, insight, and just plain fun: a pure delight. So grab your sticks and strap on your nails-let's go another round.
Customer Reviews:
Great stories.......2007-05-07
Peter Jacobsen is an excellent story teller. Great book for any golfer. There are many funny happenings on the golf course and during tournament play that I enjoyed. This book was co-authored by Jack Sheehan as was his previous book "Buried Lies". It is a fast read and Peter Jacobsen has made golf interesting and funny.

ENJOYED READING-NOT WHAT I BOUGHT IT FOR........2007-01-01
I ENJOYED READING EMBEDDED BALLS BUT IT WAS MORE LIKE A PETER JACOBSEN AUTO BIOGRAPHY. THATS WHY IT GOT 3 STARS. I THOUGHT THERE WOULD BE MORE GOLF HUMOR INVOLVING A LOT MORE TOUR PLAYERS. I REALLY LIKED HIS FAMILY AND THEIR VALUES AND IF THIS BOOK WAS MARKETED AS THE PERSONAL LIFE OF PETER AND FAMILY IT WOULD BE 5 STARS.
No mas!.......2005-12-29
This is at least one book too many for Peter. Most of the stories are old and too many involve farts. If you find this funny, your sense of humor has not developed since the second grade. The book is full of errors. Peter tells how Riviera is one of his favorite courses and then tells about his hole-in-one on the 15th hole. Sorry, Peter but the 15th hole is a par four. You made your ace on the 14th hole. It is evident that Peter not only did not write the book, he didn't even read it.
Real lightweight.......2005-10-20
There's nothing really bad about this slim book, but the writing is bland and cliches abound. I found the book neither enlightening nor funny. I'm a big golf fan and like Peter Jacobsen as a player. I always like to see him win or do well. I think that the problem with the book is that Peter is simply too nice a guy, at least in print (and that does not mean to imply he is not otherwise a nice guy), to be very interesting.
Great writing team.......2005-08-24
Once again Jacobsen and Sheehan have outdone themselves writing a book about their love of the game and the great stories that have ensued from the fairways worldwide...
I laughed until I cried and am going to pass the book on to my friends in the dental society (and huge golf fans) in golf course mecca in Central Oregon..
Customer Reviews:
I thought it was great me being a military person and all!.......2000-06-09
The book was great and I think that anyone interested in military history should read it. It covers a lot of the great leaders of our country and it shows why we are independent today. We would never be free if it wasn't for the brave men who risked their own lives to lead their men into battle. Our country pays great gratitude to these men and this book shows why each and every one of them deserved the honor they recieved. I salute all the great leaders of this country. And all the veterans who fought there way to victory.
SEMPER FIDELIS
Book Description
The Real Story Series is based on a simple idea--political books don't have to be boring. Short, well-written and to the point, Real Story books are meant to be read.
In these fact-filled, illusion-shattering masterpieces, the man the "New York Times" called "arguably the most important intellectual alive," explains why "what the public wants is called 'politically unrealistic.' Translated into English, that means power and privilege are opposed to it."
Normally somewhat difficult to read, Chomsky is at his most accessible in his speeches and interviews, and that's what these books are compiled from. Here are some examples of what he has to tell you:
In 1970, about 90% of international capital was used for trade and long-term investment-more or less productive things--and 10% reserved for speculation. By 1990, those figures were reversed.
Haiti, a starving island, is exporting food to the U.S.--about 35 times as much under Clinton as under Bush.
The gap between how much income is held by the richest and poorest 20? has increased dramatically over the past 30 years--about double for rich vs. poor countries and far more for rich vs. poor people.
Customer Reviews:
Towards greater inequalities.......2007-04-15
This trilogy gives a fair view of N. Chomsky's clinical vision on the US and the world.
He rightly sees the US as a business-run society, where the political parties reflect the interests of big corporations. The main aim of those corporations is higher market share and profits, not job creation or a better life for workers. An important factor in business profitability is the Pentagon and its military budget.
The powerful, the owners of those corporations, don't want to be subjected to democracy. They want an obedient, passive population of consumers and political spectators. This policy is successfully implemented through control of the media (`the general population doesn't know what's happening, and it doesn't know that it doesn't know').
The aim of US foreign policy was not to impose a democracy or respect for human rights or to increase living standards (a cardinal factor for the control of demographic tendencies). On the contrary, the US consistently opposed democracy if the results couldn't be controlled. Through covert (intelligence agencies) or military intervention the US (tried to) crush independent and popular forces that might bring about meaningful democracy (for those in power, `a virus' that would infect other countries and regions). Chomsky mentions interventions in Laos, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Chili, Panama, Grenada, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Iraq, Iran, Yugoslavia, Greece and Italy.
In the US and worldwide, he sees considerable increases in inequality. In the US, real wages are declining since the 1960s and working conditions are worsening.
However, this book contains also some inaccuracies. N. Chomsky underestimated the democratic importance of internet and also its business impact (skilled information workers don't have to emigrate). He thought that biotechnology and genetic engineering would become the major investment focuses of the future, not military expenditures (today 50 % of the total US budget).
His analysis of the oil price hike in the 1970s is not correct (see W. Engdahl) and the main aim of speculative capital is quick gains (results are published every three months).
It is evident that in three small books one cannot fully evaluate international institutions or dismember philosophical problems. For criticism of GATT, IMF and World Bank I recommend the books of J. Stiglitz, and for a study of human nature and the roots of racism the works of R. Dawkins.
Ultimately, what can ordinary people do in order to influence the political process: first of all, vote (elections matter), also demonstrate (cause of the end of the Vietnam War) and divulge your opinion.
These books are written by a superbly free mind. We need Chomsky's voice. Highly recommended.
Thoughtful short work.......2002-07-30
more of a compendium of short interviews than indepth analysis but once again provides some thought provoking ideas for anyone interested in the world around them and if your're not, WHY NOT?
short interesting books on foreign policy and trade.......2002-06-09
The chomsky trilogy consists or three books from chomsky. They cover issues that really brought out by the media. They focus on U.S. foreign policy that many people may not be aware of it like nicauraga and hati. He deals with how coporations and strong anti-communist feeling influenced the policy. In addition, the books cover trade agreements like NAFTA and GATT and how they are influenced by corporations and turning parts of the industrialized world into the third world.
Some Good Points.......2002-04-24
In Chomsky's democracy, there is no passive citizens. Everyone will have to think and participate. And if you think about the some of the statements in this book, you begin to wonder. It's a good start when you embark on seriously reflecting on the nature of the world around us.
On the other hand, the reader whould do well to, as the first exercise, think about some of the things said in the book. For example, on p.99, it was mentioned by on of the questioners that "The United Sates, with 5% of the world's population, consumes 40% of the world's resources...." At the same time, on p.38, the author laments that "Real wages has been declining since the 1960's" in talking about the Third-Worldization of America. Does anyone not suspect that if Americans are any richer than they are now, they would not consume merely 40%, but maybe 50%, 60% or more, of the world's resources? Is it not implicit in the author's lament his horror at the thought of living a style not on the same level as the United States, when in fact, these other countries are living a more ecological balanced life? Yes, counter the defenders, but, it's possible for us to make more money and consume less. Really? What is the motivation to make money but to consume. And is it feasible at all that economic growth, the only source of wage growth, can be achieved without using up some resources of the world? A society where there is no farmer, no hunter but everyone is a lecturer, who does not pollute air, does not cut down trees, does not kill animals for food, does not exist.
In "Media Control", the same author talked about "manufacturing consent" and having "to turn to the technique of propaganda" by the government, as early as the Creel Commission to Americans to go in to World War I. In another breath, he writes in p.36 of this book, "the media contribute to the sense that the government is the enemy and they suppress the sources of real power in the society, which lie in the totalitarian institutions - the corporations, now international in scale - that control the economy and much of our social life." How is that possible? Did the Big Brother slip somewhere for the "controlled" media to attack it's own master?
Nevertheless, Chomsky is right to think that there is "a lot of power behind" the theory put forth by Thomas Ferguson, who believes that "the state is controlled by coalitions of investors who join together around some common interests." So, he is against Big Business. But, somewhat he is not against Big Government, for he thinks it's OK that the health care be in the hand of the government, for example.
He is only against the government when it comes to foreign policies. And here he is at his most consistent, as he describes one event after another, from the softball plants in Haiti, to Nicaragua, German POW's, Chile and Russia.
THE US POLICY OF AGGRESSION UNCOVERED!.......2002-01-20
In the past, the US was loved and respected in the world for symbolysing freedom, democracy and justice and for its educational humanitarian missions in many countries.
Regretfully, since WW2 it is increasingly identified with a foreign policy of domination, military aggresion, and glaringly immoral/unfair double standards particularly in the Middle East where its direct or indirect(through Israel) victims have been the Palestinian, Lebanese and Iraqi people.
Book Description
A brilliant distillation of the real motivations behind U.S. foreign policy, compiled from talks and interviews completed between 1986 and 1991, with particular attention to Central America.

Conspiracy - too much for me.......2007-01-03
I bought this book along with "Hegemony or Survival" after Venezuela's Hugo Chavez held it up in the UN. I had not even heard of Chomsky before then. After reading more about the controversial Chomsky on the Internet, I canceled "Hegemony or Survival" and decided to keep "What Uncle Sam Really Wants" (a shorter read) to get a better feel for Chomsky's work before I spend more money on it.
After what I read on the Internet, I started reading this book with caution. To be fair, I have to admit that I never completed it... for a reason...
I don't like many of the things that the US government does abroad. I think we stick our noses in too many people's business in the name of "national interest". I would like to see the US pull back its military and rather guard our own borders. I'd like to see the US stop giving so much money to foreign countries, and rather use that money to make a decent education available to every US child, and make decent health care available to every US family.
That being said, the US has a major foreign presence right now, whether I like it or not. What I found tough to believe is that the US has this foreign presence as part of some major conspiracy to dominate the world and make all foreign economies subservient to our own, which is how I understood Chomsky's message.
Hugo Chavez loves to believe that because it gives him a stick with which to bash the US.
I think the US simply looks at unfolding events around the world in the light of how it will impact, firstly, the US and secondly, global stability, and then acts according to that interpretation. While some of the US actions abroad are highly questionable, I think those actions stand on their own as cases of bad judgment. That's a far cry from a conspiracy to dominate the world.
And that is why I didn't finish the book. I'm sure lots of people will consider my views simplistic or naive, but this book was just too much for me to believe.

If you are looking for a book that addresses issues such as American foreign policy, the idea of democracy and government corruption, "What Uncle Sam Really Wants" by Noam Chomsky has it all. Written in nineteen ninety-one, this book is a compilation of the author's previous works as well as other distinguished writers. Chomsky touches on some of the major events of our time such as the Cold War, Vietnam War, and the Iran Contra Affair. In just one hundred and one pages, Chomsky quickly conveys to any reader to his radical views, firm belief of U.S.-Nazi collaboration and criticism of the United States Military involvement around the world. Although he is considered a nihilist at times, it is hard to ignore the courage it takes to publicly castigate your own government. Chomsky is a very matter-of-fact and leaves little room for grey area; for the most part you will either agree or disagree with his ideas. Either way, it is chock full of alternative outlooks on historical events and a good starting point for political enthusiasts in search of their own truths.
Another piece of work from the loony high priest of the left.......2004-10-29

Not for the general reader but for the hard-core canid lover.......2006-02-20
The book has three parts. The first part consists of several overview chapters on canid society, infectious diseases, and similar general topics. The final section is a single chapter on conservation, which provides a very strong summary though it fails to break new ground. The middle part, and the bulk of the book, is a series of case studies of canids, both well-known and unfamiliar.
Some of these case studies (i.e., those on red and gray wolves, or island foxes) focus intensively on management issues. Other case studies seek basic information about poorly-known species (i.e., bat-eared foxes), or seek to make some purely-biological point (i.e., that Finnish racoon dogs are becoming a separate species from Japanese racoon dogs). A few other chapters straddle the biological and management perspectives, extending moderate bodies of scientific knowledge and discussing management problems briefly (i.e., Ethiopian wolves).
Like the focus, the quality of these chapters varies widely. It seems that the editors never really got control of their contributors and were unable to force a conservation or management perspective on everyone. This is especially ironic since one of the co-editors was a co-author of one of the chapters that fits least well.
As a result, the book will be of limited interest to the general reader (and I cannot say how interesting it is to the specialist). The chapters on wolves are interesting but the material in them is available elsewhere because these species are so well known.
Good Resource .......2006-01-03
If you want to learn about canids all over the world this is the book for you. Not only is it a credible resource, it has up to date information about conservation issues and research currently being conducted. Overall, a great scientific resource that cuts to the chase and gives you the facts.
