Product Description

Of the world's 4,000 to 4,500 mammal species, about 1,100 occur in Africa. In this updated and revised edition of Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa, authors Chris and Tilde Stuart concentrate on the more visible and easily distinguished larger mammal species, plus some of the more frequently seen smaller mammals. In all, over 400 color photographs, combined with concise, pertinent information highlighting the diagnostic features of each species, provide a comprehensive source of information on each mammal. The latest information has been incorporated and the distribution maps have been revised to reflect the most up-to-date habitat and distribution patterns for each species. A new feature is the inclusion of the mammals' skulls, grouped together at the back of the book. To aid the reader, color-coding and symbols indicating the habitat and activity period serve as a quick reference to the various mammal groups.

5 out of 5 stars Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa.......2000-05-03

I bought this book a long time ago when it was first published because I was looking for some information on primates and carnivores of Africa. When I found this book I wasn't disappointed! There are full colour, clear pictures on every page on primates, hoofed mammals, the elephant, carnivores, the aardvark, hyraxes, pangolins, rabbits and hares and the rodents. The carnivore section is the best but they all show original photographs and accounts with distribution, status, behaviour, a map and breeding habits of each animal or a group of them. Every picture has a caption saying where the photo was taken or a special feature of that mammal that makes it different from any other. There are no negative comments I can make on this book because it is clear, informative and with lots of pictures which can help your studies whether you're going to Africa or not!

4 out of 5 stars A pretty good guide to the animals.......1997-04-19

This handy little volume is one of three things you should definitely have knocking around loose inside your Land Cruiser on safari. The other two, of course, are the well-stocked drink cooler and Lady Jane. Yes, gin-and-tonic DOES help with malaria, and has far fewer side effects than Larium. In any case, the book is organized in a reasonable way, by families, so that the cats are together in the same section of text and not, for example, strewn about amid elephants and impalas. Thus animals are fairly easy to find even without recourse to the (adequate) index, which lists the page on which descriptive text appears as well as the page on which the animal is illustrated. The illustrations are nicely rendered watercolors that are perhaps less vivid than high-quality photographs might be, but at least show idealized animals that lack any confusing idiosyncracies sometimes seen of individual photographed animals. Certain features of the book are clearly out of date, such as the names of the more recent African countries; Lady Jane was befuddled by a country named Rhodesia occupying the territory of Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, she has been imbibing (in an absolutely out-of-character manner) an American abomination called kamikazes, so she is a trifle under the weather. Another difficulty is that animals that presently are desperately endangered, such as the bongo, were not described as such back in the '70s when most of the text was evidently written. But the written descriptions of the animals are excellent, and most handy in the field, especially when you can find both the text description and the illustration, putting fingers in the book to mark the place of each, and then looking back and forth from text to picture to animal and back again, etc. It is a lot easier than it sounds, even when the Land Cruiser is in one of its bouncier modes. Or ditto Lady Jane

          Book Description

The African savannas are rich in wildlife. Yet they are also increasingly threatened by expanding human populations. The interrelationship between vast prey herds and their predator offers fascinating insights into the world of African wildlife. Moreover, the larger carnivores are sensitive measures of environmental quality and serve as early warning systems to environmental degradation. The book presents the ecology of all African carnivores that are larger than jackals in an ordered and scientific way. It is augmented by many colour photographs taken by both authors, and excellent sketches by the internationally renowned wildlife artist Clive Walker, depicting the life and habitat of these carnivores.

                      Book Description

Eckley, near Hazleton, Pennsylvania, was a typical company-mining town, or "patch," which was in existence from 1854 to 1969. Coal companies constructed and operated villages, such as Eckley, for their workers, providing housing, stores, churches, and schools--and by extension making the workers wholly dependent on the company. The workers were originally English, Welsh, and German, and later in the century they were joined by immigrants from Ireland and southern and eastern Europe, forming an ethnically diverse community. The site interprets the day-to-day life of the workers and their families.

Jerome foxworthy -- the Jayfox to his friends -- likes to think he can handle anything. He handled growing up without a father. He handled being the first black kid in school. And he sure can handle a basketball.

Then Jerome meets bix Rivers -- mysterious and moody, but a great athlete. So Jerome decides to teach bix his game. He can tell that bix has the talent. All he's got to do is learn the right moves....

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars one of my all time favorites.......2007-07-11

Children are taught that they should tell the truth, no matter what. But is that how things really are? There's truth, and there's diplomacy. How much of truth is in diplomacy, and vice versa? What if a child isn't taught diplomacy? Does that make his world black and white?

That seems to be the case for Bix Rivers, since he went from complete honesty to complete dishonesty after realizing that complete honesty doesn't always work. He doesn't understand that sometimes you have to fumble through the gray areas in order to get to where you're going. Jerome Foxworthy tries to explain it to him, but Bix just doesn't get it.

I admire Bruce Brooks for bringing such intriguing questions to kids, and doing it through a fun and interesting story.

4 out of 5 stars Teens Bond over Sports.......2007-02-13

The first thing this book has going for it is its narrator. Jerome is bright and witty. He is a black kid in junior high school who lives with his mother and two brothers. We learn that Jerome has some tough things in his life. First of all, he has no father; his father died so long ago, Jerome doesn't even remember him. Second, Jerome is so smart he is in a bunch of accelerated classes that set him aside from his friends. Third of all, this year the all-white high school has decided to start the integration process by adding a single black student--Jerome. It seems like this book could be about how hard Jerome's life is, but it's not. Jerome mentions these things, but he doesn't see any of them as setbacks. He is confident enough about himself that nothing seems to faze him. He is free to write this book about his best friend, Bix.

Bix is a boy Jerome meets when he goes to this new high school. Jerome had admired his baseball-playing skills over the summer, but he didn't know who this boy was. Jerome, as a fantastic basketball player, admired the pure athletic ability and grace that he saw in Bix. When the two boys end up as the only guys in a home economics class, they begin to bond a little bit.

Bix is strange to Jerome. He is concerned with not lying, and the sheer thought of lying seems to bother him a great deal. When he asks Jerome to teach him to play basketball, a foreign sport to him, Jerome finds him a fast learner--except when it comes to moves, to faking someone out. That's just too much like lying for Bix. He says that he could beat someone with the pure game, and not have to pull any of the fancy moves Jerome tries to teach him. But will he be able to stick to that when it really counts?

I loved Jerome's voice. He was honest and funny, and he accepted who and what he was without complaining about his situation. I didn't like that the end of the story was unresolved. I wasn't sure how to react to Bix's stepfather, and that bothered me. I wasn't sure if he was the bad guy or not.

1 out of 5 stars Compare and contrast.......2006-11-17

I was very surprised that a lot of peole thought that this book was bad.I thought that the book was gripping but I guess that is just my oppinion. Even though the book had absolutley nothing to do with basketball I still thought it was a pretty good book. But not as good as 5 stars

3 out of 5 stars The Moves Make The Man.......2006-11-17

I really enjoyed reading the Moves Make the Man.The book is about two kids Jerome and Bix. Bix likes to play baseball and Jerome likes to play basketball. They become really good friends. Bix's mom is in a mental hospital and Bix wants to see her but his dad won't let him. Then Bix asks his dad to play him in a basketball game and says if he wins he could see his mom so Jerome teaches Bix all he knows and Bix becomes good at basketball. Read the book to find out if Bix beats his dad and is able to see his mom.

5 out of 5 stars I don't like sports books but this is amazing.......2006-11-17

This is an awesome book for anyone. Pick up the book and you won't put it down. This is a journey of friends, sports, and all the other stuff that goes on in a 7th graders life. However this is different. This is a story of a boy who runs away because his father is a couch potato and his mother drinks. I recomend this book to all and I mean all ages over 9

For Bix Rivers, nothing is more important than the truth. His father is dead, his mother is in a mental hospital, and his stepfather ignores him. A devotion to truth is all he has left. When black basketball standout Jerome Foxworthy is chosen to integrate Bixs all-white junior high school, the two outcasts form a strong friendship, and Jerome teaches Bix the fundamentals of shooting hoops. But Bix will not learn to fake. Fakes are lies, as Bix sees it. But the day will arrive when Bix has no choice but to put on the moves. If the moves make the man, what will happen to Bix if he gives up the truth? The Moves Make the Man won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award for Fiction, and is a Newbery Honor Book, an ALA Notable Childrens Book, and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Alternately angry and hilarious, but always unflinchingly honest, The Moves Make the Man is a striking and unforgettable story.

                                            3 out of 5 stars Planet Orgo..........2003-12-06

I am giving this book 3 stars because I did not receive much help from it. A lot of the information that was covered in this book did not go into enough detail, like an entire subject was explained in two sentences. I needed a little more explanation, but I guess this is why the book is deemed an outline.

I was able to gather some (a very small amount) useful information from it. But, pick the book up anyway, because to master Orgo you need as many resources as possible, especially at 3 in the morning and you are trying to figure out where to place an ethyl group. In addition to this book, grab an elementary type orgo book, like orgo for beginners or orgo for nursing majors. These type of books explain things with great detail using an ABC approach. Then do as many problems as you can! Buy a ring of notecards and write part of the reaction on the front and the rest on the back. Study these cards every night religiously. You should be able to make sense out of the reactions and pass the class with a good grade with a considerable amount of study. (I received an A using the above method)

4 out of 5 stars Practice Makes Perfect.......2001-03-13

Schaum's outlines are perfect for what they propose to do -- give the student as much practice as possible. They are experience tools, not teaching tools. The secret to doing well in genchem/orgchem is to practice, practice practice. The more problems you do, the better you will become. Concepts and theories are only half the game in chemistry.

3 out of 5 stars So you want to do better at Organic?.......2001-03-12

What you should remember about the Schaum's series is that all of them, though they may call themselves "outlines," are in fact rather cheap textbooks. They include many more solved problems than your standard textbook, but they are also not as slick or nice to look at.

The organic chemistry outline can be helpful to you, perhaps. The main draw is that each chapter includes a summary of reactions that might be worth it... if, that is, you already know which reactions are more useful than others. The amount of information is great, and this may make it difficult for you to sort out which ones are worth your attention.

The Schaum's outlines are, in my opinion, great for those motivated students who would like to gain some knowledge of the subject. They can also help when you are stuck with a problem, as chances are you will find a solved problem in the book that is at least similar. Whether that is worth the cost is another question.

1 out of 5 stars it is not helpful.......2000-05-27

Very few of the Schaum's outline series are helpful. This one is no exception. It does nothing to clarify the confusing concepts. All it does is provide more problems. Anyone taking organic chemistry knows that it is hard enough to have time to do all the problems in the assigned textbook let alone do more from this book. Furthermore, the answers to the questions are poorly explained. Save your time and money and check out your school library for other helpful books instead.

                                                  Book Description

This is the first monograph to present a unified approach to using mathematical models in the study of qualitative and quantitative regularities of immune response dynamics in infectious diseases within individual organisms. These mathematical models are formulated as systems of delay- differential equations. Simple mathematical models of infectious diseases, antiviral immune response and antibacterial response were developed and applied to the study of hepatitis B, influenza A, infectious bacterial pneumonia, and mixed infections. Particular attention was paid to the development of efficient computational procedures for solving the initial value problem for stiff delay-differential equations and to the parameter identification problem. Adjoint equations and the perturbation theory were used for the sensitivity analysis. Audience: This book will be of interest to a wide range of mathematicians and specialists in immunology and infectious diseases. It can also be recommended as a textbook for postgraduate students, bridging the gap between mathematics, immunology and infectious diseases research.

                                                  Book Description

We know, down to the tiniest details, the molecular structure of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Yet despite this tremendous accomplishment, and despite other remarkable advances in our understanding of individual viruses and cells of the immune system, we still have no agreed understanding of the ultimate course and variability of the pathogenesis of AIDS. Gaps in our understanding like these impede our efforts towards developing effective therapies and preventive vaccines. Martin Nowak and Robert M May describe the emerging field of theoretical immunology in this accessible and well- written text. Using mathematical modelling techniques, the authors set out their ideas about how populations of viruses and populations of immune system cells may interact in various circumstances, and how infectious diseases spread within patients. They explain how this approach to understanding infectious diseases can reveal insights into the dynamics of viral and other infections, and the interactions between infectious agents and immune responses. The book is structured around the examples of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis B virus, although the approaches described will be more widely applicable. The authors use mathematical tools to uncover the detailed dynamics of the infection and the effects of antiviral therapy. Models are developed to describe the emergence of drug resistance, and the dynamics of immune responses, viral evolution, and mutation. The practical implications of this work for optimisation of the design of therapy and vaccines are discussed. The book concludes with a glance towards the future of this fascinating, and potentially highly useful, field of study.

                                                  4 out of 5 stars A good introduction.......2001-04-09

This book is best described as the application of nonlinear ordinary differential equations to immunology and virology. It's primary emphasis is on understanding the time development of viral infections, drug treatments, and viral resistance of the HIV and hepatitis-B viruses.

The authors do a good job of describing the relevant equations needed to model virus dynamics. The book would be a good beginning for mathematicians interested in going into the field of mathematical immunology. And, even though it should be classified as a monograph, rather than a textbook, since there are no problem sets, students of mathematical immunology should find this book a useful introduction to the subject. In addition, the authors give a large list of references at the end of each chapter for further reading.

Mathematicians who need a background in the biology of the HIV virus will find a good discussion in Chapter 2 of the book. The authors give an historical summary of the origins and treatment of the virus in this chapter. This sets the stage for the mathematical modeling of virus dynamics in Chapter 3, where the authors define the basic reproductive ratio and write down a system of three coupled nonlinear ordinary differential equations as the basic equations of virus dynamics. They remark, though without justification, that an analytical solution of the time development is not possible, and so they use approximation schemes to solve the equations. The equations are a phenomenological representation of virus dynamics, and no attempt is made to relate the rate constants to the underlying microscopic properties/structures/processes of viruses. They do however discuss the empirical data associated with studies of SIV infections, and show convincingly there is a correlation between the initial growth of the virus and its value at equilibrium. They caution the reader that the basic model does not give the true reproductive ratio, and show how to correct for this by introducing time delays.

The efficacy of drug therapy is treated from both a mathematical and experimental viewpoint in the next chapter. This is a very enlightening discussion from the standpoint of the validation of the virus models.

The authors switch gears in the next chapter and talk about the dynamics of the Hepatitus B virus. Again, they do a good job of introducing the reader to the experimental evidence for the models of this virus.

In chapter 6, they bring in the contribution of the immune system to the basic equations. They assume that the reader is familiar with the concept of CTL responsiveness. The resulting equations are somewhat more complicated, and the authors show how the ubiquitous Lotka-Volterra equations arise with the virus being the prey, and the immune system the predator. No detailed phase space analysis is done however to study any of the equations in this chapter, which would have been useful to the reader.

The chapter on quasispecies is the most interesting one in the book, as the authors not only give a rudimentary definition of quasispecies, but they also give an indication of their complexity. Disappointingly, they mention the idea of mutation rates and their connection with chaos and self-organized criticality, but do not elaborate on this at all.

The Bonhoeffer's laws of anti-viral treatment are discussed in the next chapter and the authors show how to derive them using the basic model. The emergence of resistance during drug treatment is modeled by parameters which reflect the replication rates of the virus, but these parameters are again not connected with any underlying microscopic properties of the virus.

Some interesting dynamical behavior occurs for the case of multiple epitopes where the existence of quasiperiodic oscillations is shown to occur. They authors refer to this as "unpredictable" but they do not define this term in the book. The existence of quasiperiodic orbits in a dynamical system does not by itself make the system "unpredictable" or random of some sort.

This book is a very addition to the literature, and most importantly, it emphasizes the role of validating mathematical models experimentally, which takes on even greater importance given the medical ramifications of the topics in this book.
