Texas Caves - Great Book except for spine............2005-07-22
The content of the book was wonderful, as were the pictures. I felt as though I was in the cave. Though I am alittle upset, the spine has already come apart after I read it a couple of times.
Underground Texas.......2000-02-28
The stunning beauty of Texas caves can be seen in the book's many photographs (both color and black & white). The first part of the book gives a brief overview of the geology of Texas caves and cave biology. It provides descriptions of the seven largest "show caves" in the state (including directions, length of tour, camping, facilities, nearby motels, etc). State speleological parks which offer wild cave tours (through undeveloped caves) are also mentioned. The second part of the book includes chapters contributed by well-known Texas cavers. As a Texas caver myself, I was really happy to see a section on "Guide to Caving Etiquette," which can be useful to any reader who wants to know more about cave safety, Texas caving organizations, and establishing landowner relations. Another bonus is a chapter that includes tips for cave photography. This is a good companion book to "The Caves and Karst of Texas" which was put out by the National Speleological Society (1994).

Book Description
"It is no easy matter to make a good selection of readings on exploring urban America, but Roger W. Caves does it excellently in a substantial collection published by Sage. . . . The collection is intended as an introductory reader, but it could also well serve as a main text in U.S. urban studies." --Barry Cullingworth Review An outstanding new introductory text, Exploring Urban America presents a collection of seminal articles gathered from top urban studies journals. This carefully edited and accessible collection of articles introduces undergraduate students to the interdisciplinary field of urban studies and urban affairs. As such, it investigates a variety of areas, including cities and urbanism, urban history, urban policy, economic development, community development, community services and infrastructure, housing, urban education, and growth. Each section of this reader begins with an introduction by a leading figure in the field. This text is skillfully synthesized and provides an accessible format that will serve well as an introductory reader/text for students of urban studies, political science, and public administration.

Adventure Guide discusses the relevant information, the history, hotels and restaurants, transportation and shopping options, but its heart belongs to the outdoors, the fishing, snorkeling, hiking, canoeing, photography, and bird-watching--the oft-neglected treasures of the U.S. South. Blair Howard provides details that are often omitted from other guides: visiting private Barrier islands, the best film to use, and successful seashell collecting tips. The city pleasures of Charleston and Savannah aren't ignored, but the guide's geared to exploring the wild dunes along with the historic districts, and the joys of the Okefenokee Swamp and The Outer Banks get top billing.

Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood (Sisterhood of Traveling Pants, Book 4)
ASIN: 0316017353 |
Book Description
The Geography of Girlhood is a raw and powerful novel about a girl navigating the unknownthe difficult limbo between youth and adulthood. Written in verse, the novel follows a girl from ages 14 to 18, exploring first crushes, first dances, first kisses, and the many other dangers of growing up. Kirsten Smiths writing bursts with painfully accurate and sharply witty observations, evoking supercharged emotions with just a simple phrase or two.
Customer Reviews:
Lovely writing but doesn't resonate with 14 year old or parent.......2007-04-30
Reviewed by Sondra Fowler for Reader Views (4/07)
The "Geography of Girlhood" chronicles the woes and ways of Penny, a girl we follow in verse through ages 14 to about 16. Penny has a wayward older sister who is hell bent on taking every bad path she can find, a dysfunctional and I believe dead mother, and a father who is trying to cope with an angst-ridden teen and the wayward older daughter on his own. Penny's father eventually marries and brings a new wife and step-brother into the mix. In the end Penny grows a bit and discovers her step-brother isn't so bad; her life is her life and she needs to accept it.
I can't really say I identified with this novel - I despise teen angst. I didn't like it when I was surrounded by it as a teen. My own 14-year-old daughter read this book before I did. She said that she didn't get it. I think you had to have had a stormy girlhood or a dramatic nature to get most of this. I am sorry I cannot give this a better review - I am ill equipped. The writing itself was lovely and vivid and engaging. I think it is a grand idea. But just as every person is different, there are many maps of life to follow. This just wasn't mine.
Charming young adult book.......2006-11-15
This is the story of Penny Morrow, who, like so many others at any given time, is in the process of growing up and leaving childhood behind.
Penny is ready for this. There have been things in her life, in the past, that Penny has not been ready for--like losing her mother. She wants to grow up and live outside of her home and family now. Outside of the house, she goes to parties and meets a boy. Inside it, she gets a new stepmother and stepbrother. Penny is growing up and her life is changing, and there's no turning back the clock.
The Geography of Girlhood is a great story told in wonderful free-verse poetry that flows nicely and is easily understood. It's easy to follow the story and appreciate the poetry at the same time.
Kristen Smith has written various popular movies and her poetry has appeared many places, so it is not surprising that she has chosen a verse novel to write; combining two things she knows best, good stories and great poetry.
Kirsten Smith has told a brilliant story that is even more brilliant because of the form in which it is told, in verse. Even people who do not believe that they like poetry will be pulled into this story, with its lifelike characters and a plot that can be understood by anyone who has been through or is going through the often painful process of growing up--that is to say, all of us.
Armchair Interviews says: Nice, nice read.
Poor Prose........2006-06-27
After reading Jennifer Bryant 's Pieces of Georgia (a worthwhile read), a book written in stanzas, I combed my library for another book written in a similar manner. I came across Girlhood and couldn't wait to read it.
Sadly, I was quite disappointed. The problem with this book isn't so much the story, it's how it's written. Smith puts forth an extremely obvious effort to come off as arty and thoughtful, but the result is distracting words and obnoxious titles for every page that get in the way of the story. The book itself isn't that bad, it's all cliché of teenage novels, nothing amazing, nothing out of the ordinary.
If you choose to go ahead and read this book, just be warned: you have to work through it.
Would I read it again? Most likely not. Would I recommend it? Sure... if I didn't like the person I was offering it to =P
Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-06-01
Novels told in verse usually fall into two categories: those that simply tell a story with poetry, and those that manage to capture a life so eloquently in verse that you fall headfirst into the story. THE GEOGRAPHY OF GIRLHOOD, thankfully, falls into the latter category. Kirsten Smith has managed to pen, through verse, the story of fourteen-year old Penny Marrow, a girl you will laugh with, cry with, and get to know very, very well within the pages of this book.
Penny's older sister, Tara, was blessed with the beauty, and the ability to cut her sister down with only a glance. Her father's hope is simply that his daughters will have listened to him enough to stay away from bad boys and make a place for themselves in the world. And as for her mother? She left when Penny was six, and the only thing Penny has to remind her of her mom is a snow globe. Now she has a stepmother, and a younger stepbrother, and a family life that can be summed up with "don't be like your sister."
For Penny, life is confusing, with the fights her friends have regularly and the first kiss that makes her faint and the huge infatuation she has on her sister's boyfriend. But behind it all is the wish that her mother would just come home, would be returned by the aliens who abducted her or whatever, and make everything better. For Penny, watching her father change and her sister change and herself change is too much to take without a mother. But years pass, and when she finally gets one thing that she wants--which is Bobby--it's not at all like she expected, and she loses friends and gains new acquaintances and still, in the back of her mind, she wants her mother.
THE GEOGRAPHY OF GIRLHOOD is sweet and bitter, a poignant story filled with joy and heartbreak about growing up and learning to let go and first love. Thankfully, this is a book told in verse that you won't soon forget, a definite recommended read.
A Powerful Debut Novel .......2006-05-11
Penny was abandoned by her mother at a young age. She is dealing with a complicated family life, relationships, friendships and all the rest of those awkward situations that teenagers have to endure.
With each turn of the page is a new poem to let the reader in on the trials and tribulations of Penny. Her words flow and sing the highs and lows of young womanhood.
Kirsten Smith will have readers laughing and crying within a few pages with her very raw and real character. This is a must read for anyone who has ever been young, confused or in need of a wonderfully fresh read.
Young girls will relate to the emotional overload that Penny goes through. Boys, love, life and friends are only a small part of this fresh and beautiful story.
The Geography of Girlhood is a powerful novel completely written in poetic verse. Smith takes it straight on and writes in a no-holds-barred style that readers will appreciate.

Book Description
The problem of solving large, sparse, linear systems of algebraic equations is vital in scientific computing, even for applications originating from quite different fields. A Survey of Preconditioned Iterative Methods presents an up to date overview of iterative methods for numerical solution of such systems. Typically, the methods considered are well suited for the kind of systems arising from the discretization of partial differential equations. The focus of this presentation is on the family of Krylov subspace solvers, of which the Conjugate Gradient algorithm is a typical example. In addition to an introduction to the basic principles of such methods, a large number of specific algorithms for symmetric and nonsymmetric problems are discussed. When solving linear systems by iteration, a preconditioner is usually introduced in order to speed up convergence. In many cases, the selection of a proper preconditioner is crucial to the resulting computational performance. For this reason, this book pays special attention to different preconditioning strategies. Although aimed at a wide audience, the presentation assumes that the reader has basic knowledge of linear algebra, and to some extent, of partial differential equations. The comprehensive bibliography in this survey is provides an entry point to the enormous amount of published research in the field of iterative methods.

Book Description
In this vital and inspiring volume, John Edgar Wideman has brought together the first truly representative sampling of literature by African-American writers in the early centuries of our history. Reaching across periods, styles, and regional borders, Wideman has selected twelve works of genius–some of them celebrated literary icons, others neglected or forgotten masterpieces– and reprinted them in their entirety. The result is a book as thrilling in its passion as it is vast in scope.
Though these selections come from a range of genres (verse, memoir, historical, and personal narrative), they are all, fundamentally, stories of strength and survival. Frederick Douglass’s frank narrative of escape from slavery and Paul Laurence Dunbar’s classic verse take their place beside lesser-known works like Nat Love’s stirring account of life as a black cowboy, Ida B. Wells’s haunting descriptions of lynchings, and the crisp, compelling adventures of Olaudah Equiano. Wideman prefaces each selection with an illuminating biographical essay.
The fruit of a lifetime’s devotion to the best American writing, My Soul Has Grown Deep will stand as an enduring monument to the depth and beauty of African-American literature.

Words that never Expire...History that inspires.......2005-05-25
True this book is heavy and could make you look like a geek reading it outside the comfort of your home but that is where any criticsm for this extra-ordinary literary compilation ends. The essays that were so assiduously deliberated over, are without a shadow of doubt some of the finest that could have come out of those times. Not some of the finest that a black writer of those times could deliver but the finest any thinker or writer could put together and strangely enough i still find the underlining messages very relevant in social issues that face ethnic minorities in the west. Having the unique opportunity read great texts with boigrahical info to preceed the text is just great.
I think most of all, probably because it was my first time of reading it, was the essay and indeed the short biographical introduction of Ida B Wells which just simply blew me away. I could go on and on but you need to get a copy and READ IT - definately a collectors item
Unbeatable Resource For Black History and Culture.......2004-02-19
It might take all your strength to balance this ten pound book on your chest while you read yourself to sleep, but if you can muster the energy you'll be repaid with some of the best black history available. This collection captures the upbeat hilarity of Nat Love's cowboy experiences, the bittersweet saga of Frederick Douglass's escape to freedom, the positive energy of Booker Washington's philosophy of "lifting up [his] race" and much more. The detail and poignancy of each writer's experience with slavery is the most powerful common element of the writings. It might be too bulky to keep in your purse or backpack, but it's a valuable reference to have in a good personal library.
An outstanding presentation.......2001-12-14
This thick literary compilation of early Afro-American literary classics should be in the collection of any serious library: My Soul Has Grown Deep draws from both famous and neglected works from colonial days, drawing on narratives, oratory, and verse to sample a strong cross-section of black American literature. The attention to a range of genres and experiences makes this an outstanding presentation.
