Photos & Stories From When Timber Was King.......2001-12-28

This is a classic for anyone interested in the history of logging in the Pacific Northwest. Together with Andrews other companion book, "This Was Sawmilling" the reader will gain a great understanding how trees were harvest, transported to mills and converted into the resources which built this Country. There's hundreds of wonderful photos from the woods along with many contraptions which loggers created to make their tasks either easier or more likely, more productive. Can you imagine a raft 1000 feet long and 30 feet wide and deep made out of logs laced together with huge chains? These structures containing millions of board feet of trees would be created in the far Northwest and floated down the coast to San Diego, CA and further. There's photos in the book. There's a great photo of a logger standing on the top of a tree hundreds of feet in the air just after he has completed preparation for high-lead logging. The book is separated into geographic regions from British Columbia and each of the States of the Northwest. It has numerous poems written about loggers. (Please don't call them lumber-jacks. I never heard a man who works in the woods called a lumber-jack all my years going up in Oregon. Yet a recent TV show about the worlds most dangerous jobs constantly referred to them a lumber-jacks.) Distraction of this classic includes the lack of a table of contents, index, and the disconnect between the photos and the stories. Which is to be expected. Andrews rarely had photos of the people in the stories and vice versa. Why this short-comings. Superior Publishing printed many of these books by folks who simply wanted to document the hard work of others. Regardless whether it was logging, railroading, or shipping they were willing to publish the books. Thank goodness they did or we'd never have had these classics. If you have an interest in the history of logging this book will be a great addition to your collection.

Too broad.......1999-12-25

I bought this book for a trip to Denmark last summer. The information in the book is good, just very unfocused and general. For example, they cover the entire city of Copenhagen in about 15 pages. This book is perfect if you plan to vist all of Denmark, from Jylland to Bornholm, but if you are stoping and staying in one place (Copenhagen, Legoland, rhus, etc) this book might not be the best choice. The book tries to talk about too many places in not enough pages.

Romeo and Juliet is part of the Sixty-Minute Shakespeare series published by Five Star Publications. This series offers a way for many teenagers and adults to read and/or study Shakespeare without having to spend the time required to read an entire play. The author has taken the full works of Shakespeare and edited them into readable and enjoyable condensed versions of the original work. This would be a wonderful choice for introducing Shakespeare.

The paperback book is only 73 pages in length, yet contains all acts of the play through Act V, Scene 3. To make things easier, at the bottom of each page are small footnotes defining words the reader might not know. For example, one page gives these definitions:
Fair and honest = proper
Mark = Target
Tuckle-bed = bed on casters
A quote from the back jacket sums up the true spirit of the book: "While the language is condensed, the integrity of Shakespeare's writings is kept intact so students of the Bard can experience the thrill of the story as well as the beauty of the verse and prose."

I was a frustrated director until I met "The Sixty-Minute Shakespeare." Here was everything I needed: the plot of Romeo and Juliet cut down to a manageable size, production suggestions, blocking notes, set of sound requirements, property lists, detailed stage directions and even the definitions of some of Shakespeare's more obscure words and phrases. I never would have attempted directing a group of homeschoolers, ages 7-14, a Shakespearean production without this marvelous book. And I would have deprived them of an extremely rewarding experience: they worked very hard and the production was highly praised by the community. Not only that, but I am certain that most harbor a distinct affection for the works of Mr. Shakespeare. What more could a homeschool mother and Shakespearian enthusiast desire? Thank you Five Star Publications for providing my children with a never-to-be-forgotten educational memory that was a whole lot of fun!

While I learned some new and interesting facts about the vice-president the overall tone of the book was highly offputting. It is clear that this was a hatchet job by an extreme partisan. This is NOT a real biography. I will continue to await a serious biography of this important political figure.

I could not put this book down. It is an engaging book. I read it for some background research on John Steinbeck and the Grapes of Wraths. If you have read Steinbeck's masterpiece you have to read Red Dirt. I think Roxanne's memoir completes the story of the Joads. The psyche of the "Okie" comes alive and the drive of Roxanne to break away and then come to terms with it is fascinating. I loved this book so much that I use it for the Ethnic studies classes that I teach. I believe that to understand different ethnic groups we all have to understand what makes White America tick. This book delivers a much-needed look at the class divide among white America and no matter how much the poor whites have been abused by their richer cousins they still stand by their side. Why? Because they are white. This was a great ride

The shaping of an activist........2005-02-12

This book was my introduction to Roxanne Dunbar Ortiz. I read it before I learned more about her and her career as an activist for the past 40 years. She reflects on her life from birth until her move to California. She grew up in rural Oklahoma during some of the worst years ever. These were the years that shaped her, the launching pad of her feminist, anti-family, pro-socialist, anti-war, ... efforts.

The reader can learn a good bit about the Socialist movement in Oklahoma in the early 1900's, the Green Corn Rebellion and the patriotic surge that accompanied World War I.

Roxanne's grandfather, one of the less 'disfunctional' family members was a Socialist and strongly pro-labor and imparted his views to her. She remembers him fondly. It appears that her abusive alcoholic mother influenced her ideas about the family and church. She had very little to say about her mother or father that is not negative. Considering these influences, the dire poverty of her early childhood, and her marriage 'up' the social ladder her views on things are not too surprising. Simple - yes, but undeniably true, at least in part. And that does not take away from her drive, talent and desire to make a positive change in the world.

I grew up in central Oklahoma and can identify with many of the themes Ms. Dunbar-Ortiz writes about in Red Dirt. I think anyone who is on a journey of self-discovery or is attempting to reconcile his or her past will enjoy this book as much as I did. I rarely read literature about Oklahoma that makes me proud to be an "Okie" - this book does just that.

After reading one online review of this book, I felt it must be referring to a different book. This book is full of ways to connect with unicorns on a spiritual level and doesn't focus on the history at all. I found this book to be filled with wisdom and insights and helpful exercises that really work. It is also very uplifting and positive. I plan to re-read it!

It depends on what you want to read about. If you want to know how to meet a unicorn and have adventures with it, this book surely won't be your cup of tea. if you want to learn about the history of unicorns and their origins, buy this book. I bought this book online and I was a little dissapointed. if you want to buy this book, don't buy it online because you will be disspointed like I was.

Ted Andrews has taken me from thinking of unicorns as a mythical animal to a deep appreciation, respect and gratitude for them. Learning from his wise teachings allowed a depth of understanding that I never knew existed.

The author starts with a basic understanding and overview. Then leads the reader to undercover and explore the energies of the unicorn in more ways than imaginable. As with all of his writings, he uses many varied and different ways of working with these energies. Because of his vast knowledge in so many different techniques the reader can explore and find which method feels best to them, from meditating to dancing.

Learning to use these energies and techniques has helped facilitate much positive personal change in my life. It can do the same for you.

I must say, I was surprised when i did get this book, it contained more information than I had expecte. I have a few other of Ted Andrews book, and when i saw that he was the author of a unicorn book, I decided to go ahead and get it. I do believe it is the first of its kind I have ever seen, you dont see that many books on the magickal attributes of the unicorn that go so in depth. I appriciate this book being written, many books talk about the unicorn, but its nice to have so much in one place. This really was the book that I have wanted for a while now.
