The Silent Deep: The Discovery, Ecology, and Conservation of the Deep Sea
ASIN: 0275988783 |
Book Description
In his Ark of the Broken Covenant, Kunich showed that Earth's species are concentrated in 25 zones of ecological significance known as biodiversity hotspots, and that we'd go a long way toward saving many species from extinction if we'd focus our protective laws and regulations on these zones. In Killing Our Oceans he extends this analysis to the extraordinary pockets of life in the oceans that are similarly threatened. From coral reefs to recently discovered hydrothermal vents, the oceans contain vast numbers of endangered species. We are rapidly losing these unique, irreplaceable treasures, due in part to an appalling lack of efficacious safeguards. What's in it for us if we intervene to halt this mass extinction? Quite possibly the greatest medical, nutritional, and scientific breakthroughs in all of human history, just waiting to be discovered and harnessed--or forever lost along with the dying species that hold the keys to these secrets. Kunich examines in detail the applicable international laws as well as domestic laws of the nations with key marine resources, and demonstrates the abject failure of these measures to prevent or halt a mass extinction in our oceans. He concludes with a set of legal proposals that could start us down the road to preserving the marine hotspots and, with them, most of Earth's biodiversity. Legal solutions are not the only answer, but they are a beginning.

An informative, must-read!.......2007-02-05
After his last book focused on terrestial hotspots (Ark of the Broken Covenant (2003)), Professor Kunich has now turned his attention on the extinction of marine life. Starting off with an easy-to-read and informative outline of the marine environment, followed by an analysis of how the current international and national legal frameworks designed to protect it fall short, he once again has brilliantly combined his prior background as a scientist with his current profession of the law. The book is filled with his folksy style of writing and comparison ("The forces that impede the noble parade of failed efforts. . . . are as potent and immutable as those that have conspired tragically for nearly a century to block the Chicago Cubs from a World Series championship.") that make it a joy to read. Devoting the last two chapters to a practical suggestion of how to protect the "marine hotspots" before it is too late, he calls on the United States to take the lead in this endeavor. Let's go!
It's this dual legal and science approach which makes for a top pick, here........2006-12-14
It's long been known humankind is destroying the oceans, and plenty of titles have surveyed the problem: what makes Killing Our Oceans: Dealing With the Mass Extinction of Marine Life different is an extension of the author's prior analysis of threatened hotspots from land to pockets of ocean life. Here also is a focus on international law and regulations pertaining to the ocean, along with efforts and language of domestic laws of nations with such key marine resources - another differentiation which makes KILLING OUR OCEANS a powerful recommendation not just for college-level science holdings, but collections concerned with international legal applications of social issues. It's this dual legal and science approach which makes for a top pick, here.

Help save our fragile planet!.......2006-11-23
Everyone who cares about life on earth has to read this book. We are ruining the only planet we'll ever have, and it's rapidly becoming too late. Kunich explains the way to solve this enormous problem, and he does it with clarity and brilliance. This is the most important book I have ever read!

Book Description
Recognition of adaptive processes in biological systems as a discipline is still in its infancy. It is known that repeat exposure to low level stresses such as heat, cold, microgravity, hypoxia, exercise, etc. increases body-resistance to not only the particular stress but also to other conditions. Such a cross-protection can be utilized in a better patient care. This volume describes most current developments in the understanding of the molecular basis of adaptation as well as its application in biological systems including certain disease conditions in humans. The book is based on the presentations made by internationally known experts assembled in San Diego, USA for the 7th World Congress of the International Society for Adaptive Medicine and will be of great interest to experimental biologists as well as clinicians who deal with a wide variety of clinical conditions.

Book Description
These six volumes collect the complete essays of one of the giants of modern English prose and of social commentary in our time. At their best, Huxley's essays stand among the finest examples of the genre in modern literature. His place in English literature is unique and is certainly assured. --T.S. Eliot. He was among the few writers who...played with ideas so freely, so gaily, with such virtuosity, that the responsive reader...was dazzled and excited. --Isaiah Berlin
Book Description
A true legend, Harley Race has enjoyed almost unparalleled success in the world of professional wrestling. Having turned pro in 1959 at the age of 15, his work ethic and innovative style allowed him to become one of the three biggest names in wrestling during the 1970s and early '80s. He won the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) championship on eight occasions and was dubbed World Wrestling Entertainment's first "King of the Ring" in 1986. In the autobiography King of the Ring. Harley Race tells his incredible life story for the first time. In addition to his legendary ring career, Harley Race also became a successful promoter in the Midwest during the mid '80s with a wrestling organization seen on 13 television stations covering five states. Although injuries and a car accident in 1995 effectively ended his wrestling career, he decided to give back to the sport he loved. Race opened the World League Wrestling (WLW) organization in 1999.
Customer Reviews:
A must read if you appreciate old school wrestling.......2007-07-12
I just finished reading Harley's book and I found that it was a must read for me since I'm not very far from where he lives. I reside in Topeka, Kansas and have been to his WLW productions on numerous occasions. I've gotten a few autographs from him and had my picture taken with him in the ring, so I felt it was about time I learned more about him than just watching some old footage.
The book is pretty cut and dry, and doesn't add a whole lot of humor or opinion. It seems to be just a recollection of past events that for some might have been researched. I often wonder as all of the citing the book does for sources if Harley himself actually recalled most of these events. The book is really almost at times like reading the back of a baseball card looking at stats. It reads well enough, and although it isn't exactly a page turner it stays clear of writing anything outlandish or otherwise B.S. stories that books like Hulk Hogan's is known for. I gave it a four on the scale because although it is sometimes dry, it gives you a good education at what wrestling once was before it was considered entertainment. The book is a little shorter than I'd like as it leaves many of his personal life details hidden and mysterious. Out of all the wrestling biographies, I'd recommend it to better understand wrestling's past and how it varies from today's "sports entertainment". I'd put this book behind Mick Foley's biographies, Dynamite Kid's: Pure Dynamite, Ric Flairs biography, and William Regals, but it still should remain in your wrestling collection. I appreciated what I took from it. I recommend.
King of the Ring.......2007-03-01
I found this book to be a very worth while read. It flows well, and Harley is a good story teller. For anyone who remebers the 70's and early 80's,the glory years, will really enjoy this book. Not only is Harley the king of the ring he also comes off as a gentleman. God bless Harley Race.
Harly Race.......2007-01-11
We have seen Harley Race in person, so it was nice to read his story. This wonderful book tells of his life as he made his way to the top of Pro wrestling. Great book!
All Hale King Harley Race!.......2006-07-10
Description: An enthralling look into the world of oldschool wrestling by a man who doesn't get any more oldschool. Read about Harley Race's journey from working from the very bottom to the very top of the wrestling world, pulling no punches along the way. There is no point of view more unique than Harley Race's.
Rating: I give this a high 9 out of 10 stars. Extremely well written, insightful, entertaining, funny and touching all at once. This book is a complete tribute to the life and career of Wrestling true "King of the Ring". I don't see how any fan of the Kayfabe wrestling era can call themselves a fan without reading this book. New fans could stand to read this as a lesson in what wrestling is all about.
A Must Read For Wrestling Fans.......2005-07-04
I could of gave this book 4 stars, but I'll detail later why I did not. Now - with all the glut of bad wrestling books out there, do yourself a favor and pick this one up. I was already a huge Harley Race fan, having seen him perform in Central States, then later in the WWE. Race's honest account of his career, his ups and downs, and current resurrection give the reader a great account of his incredible journey.
Race details his childhood in northwest Missouri, where he became a protege of the Zbyszko family, working and getting stretched on their farm. He then details his breaking into the business, working as "Jack Long" in Tennessee, then later getting his first big break, tagging with Larry Hennig in Minneapolis.
The author (along with Gerry Tritz) details the hard work and sacrifice he had to endure to become a wrestler. Race eventually becomes a major star, headlining in Kansas City, St. Louis, Texas and eventually Japan. He also reveals how he became the NWA world champion, and how with accomplishment comes great personal sacrifice.
I really loved this book as great description was given to every chapter of his career. Race's battles with Jack Brisco, Terry Funk, Dusty Rhodes, and Ric Flair are great moments, but the reader will truly enjoy accounts of the backstage struggles he endured as being co-owner of the Kansas City territory, and the eventual business threat he faced in the WWE.
This environment produced the two best tales in the book. His account of dinner with Vince McMahon and the incident following is chilling and actually pretty funny. Race's story of meeting fellow promoters at the KCI airport and what he told them really gave you an insight how tense things were and can be in "sports entertainment".
I couldn't recommend this book more. The only and I mean only shortcoming, was that at 178 pages, the book is too short. I'm sure he left out alot of the saucier things, but you come away wanting way more. I certainly hope he follows it up with another book. Until then, pick this title up.
Book Description
Never did so large a proportion of the American population leave home for an extended period and produce such a detailed record of its experiences in the form of correspondence, diaries, and other papers as during the Civil War. Based on research in more than 1,200 wartime letters and diaries by more than 400 Confederate officers and enlisted men, this book offers a compelling social history of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia during its final year, from May 1864 to April 1865.
Organized in a chronological framework, the book uses the words of the soldiers themselves to provide a view of the army's experiences in camp, on the march, in combat, and under siegefrom the battles in the Wilderness to the final retreat to Appomattox. It sheds new light on such questions as the state of morale in the army, the causes of desertion, ties between the army and the home front, the debate over arming black men in the Confederacy, and the causes of Confederate defeat. Remarkably rich and detailed, Lee's Miserables offers a fresh look at one of the most-studied Civil War armies.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating book on a still-relevant subject.......2005-08-21
If you like Civil War history, you'll love this. Lee's Miserables is an account of the last year of the Civil War from the point of view of the Confederates--specifically, the Army of Northern Virginia. What is stunning is the optimism. While Lee's soldiers clearly recognized that their army and the Confederacy were in a tough spot, most seem to have believed that they would still succeed. Many Confederate soldiers believed very sincerely that God was on their side and that a miracle would save their beloved country. Only in the last few months did their confidence really begin to waver, and some kept it up until Lee's actual surrender. Until then, Lee's soldiers fooled themselves that the North was even worse off than they were. This was true, of course, if you looked only at the number of casualties on both sides; but the fact was that by the winter of the Petersburg campaign the Army of Northern Virginia and the Confederacy were seriously overmatched. The North still had a vastly greater population, industrial capacity, you name it, and was not inclined to give up now after all the sacrifices they had made earlier in the war. In reading the Confederates' optimistic letters, I was reminded again and again of today's cheery bulletins about how we are going to achieve success in the Iraq war. Self-delusion played a big part in keeping the Civil War going as long as it did. Self-delusion today by George Bush and other military and political leaders is keeping us in a pointless and unwinnable war. This book is a great reminder that it is always wise to keep in mind that there are some things that cannot be done.
This War is Real.......2001-11-06
Superb account of the soldiers who made up Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Tracy Power brings them to life for us as he digests their hopes, fears, and passions in this wonderful account of "Lee's Miserables" in the final year of the Civil War in Virginia. Covering a period during which Lee must continue to hold the Union armies at bay even though he has been deprived of his most talented subordinates, the author provides us with marvelous insights into what kept Lee's soldiers in uniform and willing to follow their commander despite the shadows lengthening over the Confederacy in 1864-65.
I recommend this book to all of my students in a Civil War history course that I teach. Every student who has read it has thanked me for the suggestion. Well organized, highly readable, and thoroughly balanced, this is "must" reading for anyone who wishes to understand the 19th Century southerners who fought on even when hope had all but disappeared. Great work by a fine historian and talented author!
An intimate look at the decline and fall of Lee's army.......2000-05-21
By ancestry and upbringing I am a Connecticut Yankee and, while for many years I have been a keen student of the American Civil War, my interests and sympathies are definitely pointed towards the Union (my relatives wore the blue). Thus, it is comparatively rare for me to enthusiastically read a book which is about a distinctly Confederate subject. I happily made an exception for J. Tracy Power's "Lee's Miserables". As it happens, a special focus of mine has long been on the Virginia campaigns of 1864-65, perhaps due to the early influence of Bruce Catton's wonderful "A Stillness at Appomattox". Mr. Power describes his book as a "hybrid of social and military history" and that is indeed an apt desciption. Although the reader can follow the course of the campaigns well enough through Power's narrative, the primary focus of the book is firmly upon how the men and officers of the Army of Northern Virginia perceived their situation and viewed the future, as told in their letters, journals, and other first-hand accounts. Although some soldiers in Lee's army remained confident to very end that they would ultimately achieve victory, "Lee's Miserables" chronicles a broad decline in morale over the winter of 1864-65. An army which could still defend its ground in September and October had become vulnerable by March and April.
I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in Civil War realities and who are ready to reject the hagiographic myths which have far too often dominated books about the Army of Northern Virginia. And I hope that someday there will be a comparable social/military history published about the Army of the Potomac during these same campaigns.
Good, not great........1999-11-27
It should be obvious to anyone who reads this book that Mr. Power is a skilled researcher and writer. His narrative is well documented and clearly organized. But I found it a bit short in analysis and narrow in coverage. Basically, this book traces the changes in morale among the Army of Northern Vigrinia's rank and file soldiers, something Power attributes to their own battlefield performance and results. He largely neglects to address other key contributors to morale (or lack of morale) in sufficient detail, for instance, the significance of religious revivals among the troops. In addition, most of Power's conclusions are not original. He basically reenforces--effectively, of course--earlier scholars' opinions regarding the ANV during the late months of the conflict. Still, this one is worth adding to your shelf.
Inspiring Southern history up close and very personal.......1999-02-12
Lee's Miserables covers the period from May 1864-April 1865 in great detail. It uses voluminous private correspondence and diaries from that time to give a very personal view of the campaigns beginning with The Wilderness and ending at Appomatox. The research done by Mr. Power is impressive and the documentation quite complete. As I read this book my respect for the Army of Northern Virginia increased with each page. Many of the men who fought for Southern Independence went in to the 1864 Campaign with every expectation of ultimate victory. As Grant's Army was repelled at Wilderness, then Spotsylvania, and again at Cold Harbor it did seem the future of the Confederacy was viable. But Grant did not march away after being defeated as his predecessors had done, even to the point that after Cold Harbor he had lost more casualties than Lee had in his whole army but Grant and his army stayed on Southern soil. Grant was undeterred, and pressed on to Petersburg and began the stalemate of trench warfare. The Spring Campaign of 1865 opened on a much-depleted Army of Northern Virginia and only the strongest diehards were still in the trenches when Grant began his offensive that lead to Lee's surrender at Appomatox. Throughout it all, Lee's Miserables were prolific writers corresponding with their wives, mothers, fathers, etc., regarding the substance of their daily thoughts and trials. This book gives great insight into the motives of the patriots and what kept them going under extremely difficult conditions. Their ability to withstand the privations of low rations, inadequate clothing, scarce footwear, and sinking civilian morale in the South are a testament to the spirit and determination of many in that dedicated army. One of the somewhat surprising events the author brings out is the number of defections from both the Union army and the Army of Northern Virginia. Many soldiers on both sides simply couldn't stand the stalemated conditions and growing hopelessness any longer and preferred life in a POW camp to that in the trenches. This is fine book about the reality of the decline and death of the Confederacy and well worth reading.
Book Description
This book represents a major statement of the current research being conducted on the learning of second languages from a sociocultural perspective. The book is divided into a theoretical and an empirical part. Specific topics covered include: learning and teaching languages in the zone of proximal development; L1 mediation in the acquisition of L2 grammar; sociocultural theory as a theory of second language learning; gestural mediation in a second language; and constructing a self through a second language.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellently Edited Collection of Sociocultural Articles for SLA theorists and Pyscholinguists.......2006-07-10
Lantolf is probably the foremost authority on Sociocultural theory and its Vygotskyan psychological approaches to Second Language Acquistion. I used this volume for a comparison of Chomskyan UG and Vygotskyan Sociocultural theory for a Masters level final essay and received 93% for my efforts, much of the cited material came from this volume. Highly recommended!
Together with Dorothy Robbins' comprehensive review of Vygotsky in "Vygotsky's and A.A. Leontiev's Semiotics and Psycholinguistics : Applications for Education, Second Language Acquisition, and Theories of Language (Contributions in Psychology) (Hardcover)", these two books provide more than sufficient research in this interesting and innovative approach to SLA.

The main force behind Lantolf's book is to broaden the base of theories for second language acquisition (SLA). A major theme running through the text is the inadequacy of popular interactionist theories of SLA for explaining and describing language development, and the need for a research framework that accounts for the role of social context and collaborative dialogue. The text starts with a good overview of sociocultural theory, outlining the major aspects of the theory, including activity theory, inner/private speech and the zone of proximal development. The relevance of these areas are then discussed by a number of SLA theorists/researchers, with the aim of calling for a deeper, contextual and qualitative analysis of language learning interactions/tasks, and asserting the efficacy of sociocultural theory in facilitating and explaining effective language learning. A very readable book.

Book Description
Through its constuctivist orientation and Sociocultural perspective, this book contributes to an improved understanding of what it means to read and, particularly, to recall, second language texts in the context of both second language reading and research. It also serves as an introduction to Sociocultural Theory and demonstrates the usefulness of this type of analysis, not only of written recall protocols, but of other forms of learner language. Finally, it attempts to illustrate the nature of activity in relation to task, by showing the diverse ways in which learners approach the task of writing a recall protocol.
