          5 out of 5 stars The BEST!.......2002-06-30

We were in Ireland for 6 weeks and although there are many other Bed & Breakfasts throughout Ireland, this book lists the best ones. Every Bed & Breakfast from this book turned out to be wonderful!

          5 out of 5 stars Taylor's review.......2002-04-05

We used the third edition of The Irish Bed & Breakfast Book during our three week tour of Ireland in 1998. We found that the book, while only listing two or three B&Bs in a city, listed the better establishments. Whenenver we used the book as a guide we were always satisfied with our lodgings. Whenever we did not we were unhappy with the lodgings.

The seven places we visited from the book were always clean, comfortable, served good food and were pleasant to visit.

We will be visiting Ireland again in July 2002 and intend to purchase the fourth edition.

I was very dissappointed in this book as a guide for where to stay on our trip to Ireland. It was a huge waste of money. My husband and I were in Ireland for 2 weeks total. We rented a car and traveled from Dublin south along the coast then westward then north along the west coast. We didn't make any reservations ahead of time anywhere; which turned out to be OK. We referred to this book a couple of times when it came time to find a bed and breakfast but we found that it was very limited. For instance it listed about 4 establishments in Waterford when it turned out there were about 40. We got better use out of the free bed and breakfast guides we got through the Ireland Tourism offices.

I found the Bed & Breakfast book I received from the Irish Tourist Board to be generally more useful than this book. I referred to it for a reality check but found the AA (the Irish equivalent of the AAA) more informative overall than the book.

1 out of 5 stars The Sullivan Holiday in Ireland.......1999-02-27

This book is authored by a couple of ex-b&b'rs. I t reads like a journal of thier vacation in Ireland. There are only a few b&b's mentioned and it seems like only the ones they visited. Much to my dismay the Sullivan's didn't visit Knock, so apparently it does not exist and neither do the B&B's. The only redeeming thing the book has going for it is that for the B&B's mentioned, it gives first hand directions.

                Annie's Diary
                Edited by: Dr. Beatrice Sparks
This book is based on a girl's diary that was faced with the worst experience of her life and was edited by Dr. Beatrice Sparks.
Annie, the main character of this book was madly in love with sports. She had been playing at one of her soccer games just like any other day and kaput she had gotten side tackled and limped off the field. While she was sitting on the bench this guy named Danny whom she had never met bothered to ask her if she was alright. Her eyes brightened; she thought she was in love Danny's looks had charmed her.
Annie never normally cared what she looked like for school but she was determined to make a good impression of herself to her mystery guy. Bell after bell every chance she got she would roam the halls looking for her prince charming. One day they finally ran into each other. He asked her out on a date. She was ecstatic and said yes. Her best friends were very supportive over her and agreed that it would be a bad idea for Annie to tell her mother about the guy she had met.
They began dating and Annie thought that they were destined to be together. They would always spend time alone together but then when it came to Danny's friends he never spoke a word to her. He acted like he didn't even know her. He was beginning to act stranger as the days went by.
Would Annie change her opinion and personality all over a guy who she thought she was destined to be with?
This was a great book it really got me involved in my reading I never wanted to put down I just wanted to keep reading and find out what happened next. This book brings a lot of suspense to me when I was reading and helped me realize what could happen in my own life. I would recommend this book to teenage girls or anyone who loves reading books based on true stories or diaries or to anyone who loves to read romance stories, or loves a good book that you can't stop reading.

                5 out of 5 stars True Story.......2007-04-25

This is a true story of a teen who is going to have a baby. She tells her mother; her mother is loving and understanding and compassionate. Will she keep the baby or give it up? This true story tells how she dealt with it. I really enjoyed it.

                5 out of 5 stars Teenage Pregnancy.......2007-02-23

Growing up around teenage mothers, this book really helped me to understand what they are going through. Anybody, child, parent, sibling, friend, who has a teenage mother or pregnant-about-to-be mother in their life, you should definitely read this book to get a better understanding of their feelings and emotions and how they still do have options.

                5 out of 5 stars Annies baby.......2007-02-07

In my opinion this is one of the best books i have ever read in my whole entire life
It is just so touching and once you start reading it you truly cant stop because you get so caught up in the moment and so into it that you actually feel sorry for annie and you fell as if you know her.
                This is a good book

                1 out of 5 stars Shameful.......2007-01-06

Beatrice Sparks is the author/editor of a serious of "anonymous" teen diaries. They are meant as "warnings" to children. In fact, they are not based on real diaries and the only one that actually was, she used about 10% of the journal entries and added a Satanic theme which horrified the family.

Now I am aware that children should be taught such things as drugs are bad, teenage pregnancy is not preferable, don't kill yourself etc. However, I take offense when presented in this manner. Children learn best from the truth not extreme propaganda. I also take offense that many libraries (especially school libraries) list this book as non-fiction, when in fact it is a work of fiction.

                  Book Description

The book’s purpose is to explain from the development of life on earth to the evolution of diversity. It is this diversity that led, almost automatically to the development of pathogens and predators. The relationship of pathogens and host lead to the development of antibiotics and resistance mechanism. Man has extended this process and we now have a situation in which new antibiotics only are effective for a short time. If we are to create long term antibiotics we must design them with this history in mind.

Understanding antibiotic chemotherapy at the ecological level is necessary for more permanent advances in development and in the usage of antibiotic agents both old, new, and in the future.

This book is intended for students at various levels that will be the microbiology researchers in the time to come. Also microbiology professors, particularly those teaching medical microbiology as well as physicians administering antibiotics daily and researchers in the pharmaceutical industry may find this book useful.

5 out of 5 stars "Desert Island" London.......2006-09-24

I'm a big fan of London, and have (so far) read probably 2/3 of his published work. I always prefer, when possible, to read his stories in their original collected volumes, rather than in the many "greatest hits" collections of his work. This volume is the exception to that rule. Earle Labor, a renowned London scholar, has put together the ultimate "desert island" volume of London's work. All of the best stories are here, as well as an excellent collection of his non-fiction writing, letters, and biographical material. The Call of the Wild is also included in its entirety. Unfortunately, other excellent novels are not represented here, but that's understandable due to space concerns. Labor provides a detailed chronology of London's life, and an introductory essay that puts these varied works into context. The result is not merely a showcase of London's best work, but a volume that gives an excellent overview of the man's life, the stages in his literary career, and the development of his politics and philosophy. For diehard London fans, if you can only fit one book in your carry-on bag, this is a great volume to have with you. For those who have never read London before, this book makes a great introduction to the man and his art.

                          5 out of 5 stars American Experiences.......2005-03-13

This is an exceptional collection of short stories, non-fiction and letters. Though London is best known for his arctic adventure stories (many of his best are found in this book), the breadth of topics about which he wrote is extensive and that is demonstrated here. The things that ties all the writing together, however, are excellent writing, passion, ferocity, intelligence and a social conscience. London had many interests and was a prolific writer and this book captures his talents better than any I've seen. I would highly recommend the collection to any one who likes London, short stories, good writing or American history (since his stories capture many aspects of America in the early 20th century). This is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it.

... Do you like good writing? Are you socially aware? Do you really think the only thing good is Call of the Wild? Be prepared for the GOOD stuff.
He doesn't write the fluff. It's all socially relevant or life an death stuff. And it's all written VERY well.
Favorite Stories : the Apostate, and the 2 versions of To Build a Fire ( one the Boy Scout version, the other the real deal.)

                          ... READ IT! LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars A new dimension to London.......2000-05-09

I first read this collection about two years ago and still go back to selected works from time to time. If all you have read by London is "The Call of The Wild", then you have not been exposed to the depth of his writing.

Stories like "A piece of steak" and the more popular "To build a fire" show London's ability to highlight the human spirit. "Strength of the strong" has deep political connotations and probably inspired "Animal Farm" by George Orwell, a contemporary of London.

There are really so many great stories in this collection. I advise anyone to explore the work of Jack London further.

                              Book Description

A chilling, groundbreaking investigation into the death of one of the great rock icons of our times -- including exclusive access to the case tapes of Courtney Love's former P.I., and a host of compelling new evidence.

On Friday, April 8, 1994, a body was discovered in a room above a garage in Seattle. For the attending authorities, it was an open-and-shut case of suicide. What no one knew then, however, is that the deceased -- Kurt Cobain, the superstar frontman of Nirvana -- had been murdered. Drawing on case tapes made by a P.I. hired by Courtney Love when her husband escaped from drug rehab and went missing -- and on new forensic evidence and police reports obtained under the Freedom of Information Act -- Love & Death explodes the long-standing theory that Kurt Cobain took his own life.

Award-winning investigative journalists Max Wallace and Ian Halperin have conducted a ten-year crusade for the truth, and in Love & Death they present a stunning, convincing argument that the whole truth has yet to be revealed.

first of all, this is the most cleverly titled book ive ever read lol. before i read the book i had looked up some of the kurt cobain murder conspiracy websites, and i have to say i was not convinced. however, after reading this book, all i can say is wow. there is no way kurt pulled that trigger. the evidence in this book alone is enough to charge courtney love with conspiracy to commit murder. and to think there is even more incriminating evidence that will only be released once the case is reopened!! it really hurts me to think that the sapd refuses to reopen this case and justify the death of such a beloved rock hero as kurt cobain just because they dont want to admit they were wrong. i think every member of the sapd needs to read this book, and then maybe they will realize that this was not at all a suicide. all we can do is pray that someday justice will be served.... overall, this is the best book purchase that i have ever made, and i am now thoroughly convinced that what happened to kurt was in no way at all self-inflicted

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK.......2007-08-17

This is a VERY good book! I am a HUGE Nirvana/Kurt Cobain fan. This book is very well written and I couldn't put it down! This book is for anyone trying to figure out if his death was suicide or murder. It's for any Kurt Cobain fan!

                              4 out of 5 stars Wow..........2007-07-30

If I ever see Courtney Love, it'll be really hard not to punch her in the throat.

5 out of 5 stars Just another review........2006-07-01

When I first learned about the case, I was sure of it to be murder. I read this book, and my feelings were confirmed even stronger. This book examines things very well and digs deep under the surface. It makes the murder case even stronger. I decided to read it again, a little less thank a year after the first time. Although upon completion, I felt differently. I don't know what caused it, but my veiws on the subject completely changed. I no longer blamed Courtney. I no longer went on believing something that had yet to be proven. I'm much happier now that I'm no longer ignorant enough to blame someone for something that hasn't been deemed true. I feel I owe that to this book for whatever reason it might be.

4 out of 5 stars It's not THAT bad, people.........2006-01-22

I've read books a thousand times more boring than this one. But I noticed a lot of people talking about the title and that it's misleading.. OK... LOVE AND DEATH. That's just a plain and not very original statement. I don't see a question there... The Murder of Kurt Cobain. Again, NO BLOODY QUESTION THERE. So, stop your bickering, there's no question! The cover has NO QUESTIONS on it... All it sells is extra clues and stuff to the investigation. So, with that cleared up...

The book isn't bad and is written decently if not well. Maybe reading Harry Potter was oodles of fun, but this isn't a fiction story. You have to prepare for it like you would for a history chapter back in 8th grade. This book isn't selling fairy tales, people.. It's selling a bloody theory. And theory doesn't equal to fact, either. It's the same thing Charles Darwin had to go through to get his theory bothered with. He needed evidence; just like these guys are just collecting and sharing evidence. So, second thing cleared up.

I would only recommend this book to a BIG fan. Someone who can die a little to know more about what happened and get some different perspectives in the event. If you think this is just a nice little read on the side, you're terribly wrong. Only buy it if your completely interested.

                                Book Description

When the first American servicemen arrived in England in March 1942, the indigenous population greeted their presence with mixed feelings. A certain level of resentment of these newcomers was harbored by the English and expressed by many in the well-worn phrase of the time 'over-paid, over-sexed and over here'. But without the presence of American servicemen in Britain and its huge military and industrial muscle, the war with Germany would probably have been lost. Using a combination of contemporary eyewitness and documentary sources plus latter-day interviews, linked together by engaging narrative, author Helen Millgate takes a look at the background to 'the friendly invasion' - where they all came from, who they were, where they were stationed and what they did. She examines how the 'Yanks' got on with the locals, how they fit in (or didn't), their impact on the social structure of England in the 1940s, the problems they brought with them and their impressions of England. She also reviews how the US Army went to war in June 1944 with the arrival of D-Day, and beyond to VE-Day. She concludes with the journey home once the war in Europe had ended, describing what the Yanks left behind them and the wives and sweethearts they took 'stateside'.

5 out of 5 stars Straight to the Point.......2002-12-21

Ms. Pollitt is a rare gem: a brilliant intellectual who knows how to write simply and well. At times hilarious, at others depressing, this book gets to the point better than just about anything else out there.

Pollitt is also one of the very few people in this country who very regularly talks about issues affecting poor women of every hue across the globe. Birth control, economic freedom, education for girls: these things are even more important to those who don't have access to them than to those of us who, in some measure, do.

No one sees, and tells, the point better than Katha Pollitt. Man or woman, old or young, brown or pink, you need to read this book.

                                5 out of 5 stars a very fine book.......2001-10-02

So I'm reading through the other reader reviews posted here, and what strikes me is that the people who don't like it have the same critique, delivered over and over, generally in about 2 lines. "She doesn't talk about race and class," they whine. "She's white and middle class, so she doesn't speak for ALL women EVERYWHERE."

Ok, she's white and middle class. But first off, she actually does address race and class at various points in the book. Maybe not on every page. But is that the duty of every feminist essayist on earth? Can we not specialize? If she were a working class woman of color writing about working class women of color, would we be complaining so vociferously? And why do these people not have anything better to propose? I mean, I'm all for studying race and class, but my goodness, I learned to expand on that standard complaint after about one semester at Wesleyan. What I mean is, anyone can complain that those things are missing. Tell me where you'd put them in. Tell me, specifically, what's missing here.

So let's take the book for what it does. Has someone ever said something perfectly stupid and offensive to you and 4 hours later you came up with the perfect comeback, having had little to say at the time? This is a book of those perfect comebacks. To address another complaint I saw in some reviews, yeah, it's basically liberal feminism -- a fairly left version of liberal feminism, but not truly radical in any way -- but here's the thing. We have to acknowledge that there's a use for that. You can love Judith Butler's work, but it's not very often going to help you have discussions (or win arguments) with people who aren't kind of on your page already. Katha Pollitt will help you get people on that page. You can take arguments from her work and actually use them in discussions with people you know. You can learn from the critical eye she turns on events in the news and eventually develop an ability to turn a similarly critical eye of your own on the news as it happens. There's a non-negligible value in that.

The negative reviews of this book posted below sure sound like they were all written by the same person, don't they. Just read the book.

                                5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2001-03-18

I always enjoy Ms. Pollitt's work and never miss her columns in "The Nation." This collection is, I believe, her finest.

5 out of 5 stars A great thinker and essayist.......2001-03-03

Those who have any intelligence and discernment realize that this woman is a first-class thinker and a clear, concise and witty essayist. Conservatives just wish they had somebody this smart and talented on their side. She puts the simplistic and smug Katie Rophie to shame in her incredible essay "Not Just Bad Sex"

"It may be that Roiphe's friends have nothing to tell her. Or it may be that they have nothing to tell *her*. With her adolescent certainty that bad things don't happen, or that they happen only to weaklings, she is not likely to be on the receiving end of many painful, intimate confessions. The one time a fellow student tells her about being raped (at knifepoint, so it counts), Roiphe cringes like a high-school vegetarian dissecting her first frog: 'I was startled... I felt terrible for her, I felt like there was nothing I could say.' Confronted with someone whose testimony she can't dismiss or satirize, Roiphe goes blank." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Katha Pollitt's work will be read and valued long after mental midgets like Roiphe have cashed in their 15 minutes of fame.

                                    Book Description

Turning to Earth offers a window into the heart of environmental change, moving beyond the culture's traditional reliance on policy reforms and technological measures. It charts the course of "ecological conversion," a dynamic inner process by which people come to ally themselves with the natural world and speak out on its behalf. Stories by ecological converts illuminate a critical realm long neglected by environmental scholars and activists--how the terrain of spirit, psyche, and conscience shape our commitment to Earth.

Marina Schauffler's engaging exploration of "inner ecology" deftly weaves together numerous autobiographical accounts with insights from the fields of ecocriticism, ecopsychology, environmental philosophy, and environmental education. An opening portrait of the writer and activist Terry Tempest Williams traces her deepening devotion to Earth. Each subsequent chapter explores a key element of ecological conversion, drawing primarily on the personal testimony of Williams and five other pioneering writers: Rachel Carson, Alice Walker, Edward Abbey, Scott Russell Sanders, and N. Scott Momaday.

Turning to Earth extends the parameters of contemporary environmental discussion by illustrating how substantive change hinges not just on political and institutional reforms but also on profound inner transformation. The compelling life narratives of ecological converts provide inspiration and direction for the growing number of activists, educators, scholars, and citizens committed to changing the world from the inside out.

In Turning to Earth: Stories of Ecological Conversion, she sets out to investigate this spiritual phenomenon. She outlines the process of ecological conversion, a process which she believes makes people feel intimately bound up in the natural world, spiritually satisfied, and environmentally motivated. Her sources are the personal narratives of Edward Abbey, Rachel Carson, N. Scott Momaday, Scott Russell Sanders, Alice Walker, and Terry Tempest Williams. Turning to Earth is a kind of miniature Varieties of Religious Experience for the ecologically minded.

Thankfully, the slim volume is about as lucid, personal, and earnest as academic writing gets. It incorporates lyrical passages about Schauffler's own conversion experiences along with literary criticism and bits of biographical essays. I came across the book one afternoon in the Stanford Bookstore, perused it, bought it, and shoved its smooth green hide into my purse with almost fetishistic excitement. It did not disappoint. How often can a dissertation revised into a first-university-press-book generate such a response? Schauffler outlines the process of "turning to earth" in six steps: "Remembrance," "Reflection," "Revelation," "Reciprocity," "Resistance," and "Ritual."

I assumed she intends the framework as one tool for analyzing ecological conversion, not as an airtight, comprehensive model. She warns us that these elements of conversion don't follow a Twelve-Step-style progression. We should expect to jump around and start over. Schauffler begins with "Remembrance," which refers to formative experiences in nature in childhood. "Reflection" means adult introspection which may come in response to loss or pain. "Revelation" refers to mystical insight. "Reciprocity" means awareness of our relationship with non-human elements of nature. "Resistance," of course, means fighting to protect the environment. Schauffler frowns on the idea of nature as self-help. She encourages us to see the process of "turning to earth" as a way to embrace responsibility as well as healing. "Ritual" describes the way in which creative and ceremonial acts reinforce the sense of belonging in nature. Though I found the alliteration annoying and the idea of steps a little cookie-cutter, in the end I was grateful for the structure. It allowed her to describe a varied and often cyclical spiritual process and draw on a gaggle of authors without making her structure byzantine.
