Book Description
Well known for its spectacular mountains and beautiful beaches, the Dominican Republic is blessed with a wide variety of landscapes and natural attractions. It has dense mountain forests, extensive mangroves, bone-dry deserts as well as a large number of protected national parks. It is also a country with a vibrant cultural life, producing internationally famous musicians, artists, and sportsmen. In this introduction to the Dominican Republic, James Ferguson examines how the past has shaped today's nation and how Dominicans have created their own unique identity.

Just the book I was looking for!.......2007-10-16
I had already planned and booked my trip to DR so I did not need or want one of the MANY books out there on where to stay, what to do, etc. I had already taken care of all that. Instead, I wanted to learn about the history and culture of the DR, to gain some background knowledge on my travel destination. This book gave me a great overview of the country. The chapters are broken down into the following sections: a history of the nation; from plantation to vacation: DR today; Music, food & the arts; nature and outdoor activities; Santo Domingo, Mountain/river/central areas; the north coast; the east coast (sugar and sand); the southwest; and various facts/information (that are helpful to tourists). This book makes no mention of specific resorts, rather geographic areas and what each has to offer. There are many beautiful color photos throughout the book as well. It is a very quick and easy read, and because I read it I felt like I knew a little bit about the wonderful people of DR whom I came in contact with. Do not buy this book if you are looking for a Fodor's type book that lists and rates resorts, restaurants, etc. Buy it to get a brief lesson in DRs history and culture before traveling to the country. You won't be sorry!
Book Description
If you want to know the truth...
Sometimes I'm not sure who I am anymore."
Thirteen. It's an age of wonder...or dread. The best year of your life...or maybe the worst ever. You've just become an official teenager, even though you're not quite sure you feel like one, but you're no longer a kid, either. Here, from fourteen different points of view, are stories about that wonderful, terrible time. The big bar mitzvah that goes suddenly, wildly, hilariously out of control. A first kiss -- and a realization about one's sexual orientation. A crush on a girl that ends up putting the boy who likes her in the hospital. A pair of sneakers that a kid has to have, no matter what. Written by some of today's finest writers for young adults, these stories -- by turns funny and sad, wrenching and moving -- truly capture the agony and ecstasy of being thirteen.

Great way to reach kids who aren't avid readers........2006-09-18
My son is in 8th grade and never a big reader (which I am trying to change). This book appealled to him on two levels. First, the short story format was less "stressful" than having to commit to a full length book. Second, the variety of stories has something for everyone. Some stories he identified with personally and others he felt helped him understand someone his age with a different background. There was also a mix of humor and seriousness that he really enjoyed. We both reccommend this book heartily.
PRETTY DARN GOOD.......2006-01-09
13 is exactly what the subtitle says it is about. It capture the agony and ecstasy of being thirteen more than any other book i have read. But, then again, I havn't read any other books about being 13 years old. Anyways, 13 is a great book. It is a quick read but you will find yourself having problems putting it down. I recomended this book for anyone. If your past the age of 13 you can relate to it, if not, you can find out what 13 is all about. All in all, 13 is PRETTY DARN GOOD.
A great read aloud to use in your class........2005-10-20
I read some of the stories in this book in my classroom and my students loved it. I had kids lining up to check the book out from me after I read the first story, which incidently may be one of the funniest stories i have ever read aloud in class. A must have book for any middle school teacher.
Nice collection.......2005-08-28
I have used a few of the stories as reading material for my middle school literature class. My students enjoyed the short stories.
It is a collection anyone can enjoy........2004-07-26
Author Sandra Cisneros expressed in her story "Eleven" that when you are eleven years old, you are also ten, nine and eight, and so forth. Thirteen is no different. When you're thirteen, you're also twelve, eleven and ten, yet you're expected --- and even want --- to be fourteen, fifteen and sixteen. Being thirteen is a time of confusion and sometimes anger, but it's also a time of hope and wonder, and a chance to start exploring who you are and what you want to become.
Twelve authors and one poet, including teen fiction luminaries like Ron Koertge and Ellen Wittlinger, share thirteen stories that range from humorous to heartbreaking, all about the joy --- or the lack thereof --- of being thirteen years old. In Ann Martin and Laura Godwin's "Tina the Teen Fairy," a fairy visits Maia, who wants nothing more in life than not to turn thirteen, on the evening before her birthday. James Howe explores what a bar mitzvah means to one boy in "Jeremy Goldblatt is So Not Moses." As these authors show, it doesn't matter whether you're rich or poor, male or female, urban or rural --- there are some things about being thirteen that no one can escape.
13 is not a survival guide to anyone's thirteenth year; rather, it is a compilation of thoughts, memories and feelings that each author contributes to the reader. Instead of trying to guide the reader, these stories serve as sympathy and example. It is a collection anyone can enjoy, whether he/she is 13, 23 or 53.

Book Description
It is over twenty years since Jared Diamond focused attention on the possible existence of assembly rules for communities. Since then there has been a proliferation of studies trying to promote, refute, or test the idea that there are sets of constraints (rules) on community formation and maintenance (assembly). This timely volume brings together carefully selected contributions which examine the question of the existence and nature of assembly rules with some rigor and in some detail, using both theoretical and empirical approaches in a variety of systems. The result is a balanced treatment which encompasses a wide range of topics within ecology including competition and coexistence, conservation and biodiversity, niche theory, and biogeography. As such it provides much to interest a broad audience of ecologists, while also making an important contribution to the study of community ecology in particular.

Book Description
The principles of the modern physical theory of the effect of ultrasonic and other acoustic fields on chemical reactions are presented. Special attention is given to the influence of acoustic fields on chemical reactions in nonaqueous systems, catalytic processes and reactions involving macromolecules-processes which in recent years have been the object of intensive research. The presentation of the author's new electrical theory of cavitation phenomena and sonochemical reactions and sonoluminescence initiation makes this text particularly interesting and valuable.
Sonochemistry and cavitation is rapidly increasing in importance in modern chemistry as a result of many significant achievements made in recent years. These developments, as well as the fundamental concepts, are detailed and illustrated in this current and comprehensive text.

Book Description
Sonochemistry is studied primarily by chemists and sonoluminescence mainly by physicists, but a single physical phenomenon - acoustic cavitation - unites the two areas. The physics of cavitation bubble collapse, is relatively well understood by acoustical physicists but remains practically unknown to the chemists. By contrast, the chemistry that gives rise to electromagnetic emissions and the acceleration of chemical reactions is familiar to chemists, but practically unknown to acoustical physicists. It is just this knowledge gap that the present volume addresses.
The first section of the book addresses the fundamentals of cavitation, leading to a more extensive discussion of the fundamentals of cavitation bubble dynamics in section two. A section on single bubble sonoluminescence follows. The two following sections address the new scientific discipline of sonochemistry, and the volume concludes with a section giving detailed descriptions of the applications of sonochemistry.
The mixture of tutorial lectures and detailed research articles means that the book can serve as an introduction as well as a comprehensive and detailed review of these two interesting and topical subjects.

Intuitive and rigorous approach to computability theory.......2006-08-09
This book is a mix of both rigorous (but not formal) and intuitive approaches to computability.
It is a MUST.
You can not be a real theoretical computer scientist if you don't read and study in depth this text.
It covers all main results of the field.
Another grand book i advice is "Computability and Unsolvability" of Martin Davis.
These 2 books can be read together

A 20th-century spiritual testament.......2002-06-08
"The Scripture of the Golden Eternity," by Jack Kerouac, is one of those books that you should read, then put aside and out of sight, and pick up and read again several months later (that's what I did). The "Scripture" consists of a series of numbered, meditation-like prose poems that explore the concept of the Golden Eternity. The City Lights edition contains both a 1970 introduction by Eric Mottram and a 1994 introduction by Anne Waldeman. According to the publication data page, the Scripture itself was first published in 1960 (although the introductions note that it was composed earlier, in 1956).
The Golden Eternity is an enigmatic concept that seems to transcend rational thought; it reminded me somewhat of the Tao. Kerouac uses many paradoxical statements to explore the Golden Eternity; his writing is sometimes funny. He also plays with words, using such terms as "the universal Thisness" and "the everlasting So." He even incorporates geometric symbols into one section of the Scripture.
Throughout are a multicultural constellation of references that give the Scripture a universalistic flavor. Buddha, Jesus, Shakespeare, Krishna, Kali, Einstein, and the Native American deity Coyote are just a few of the many references. He also finds insights in a butterfly, cats, and "your little finger."
Kerouac writes, "When you've understood this scripture, throw it / away. If you cant understand this scripture, / throw it away. I insist on your freedom." But whether you throw the book away, treasure it, or pass it on, chack out Kerouac's wonderfully written "Scripture."
Golden Eternity, the Tao, Spirit, or Self.......2002-01-07
_When I first read this little book I thought that it was primarily Buddhist in essence. When I read it again a while later, I said,no, the spirit of this book is definately Taoist. When I read it next I said, this is a true Gnostic creation- who but a gnostic would have the audacity to compose an original scripture? Of course I was right all along, for this book cuts to the mystic heart of all true paths. This is the teaching that we are all one, for we are all emanations of the one Source, call it the Golden Eternity, the Tao, Spirit, or Self. It could be the "dazzling darkness" of Dionysis. It is the core truth of the one appearing as many that it may come to know itself. This was the unnamed IT that the beats were waiting for, it is the perennial lesson for all true mystics.
_Oh yes, the book is a small one. perfect books are often like that- take a look at the Tao te Ching....
_A man that can write a book like this doesn't have to hang around this old world too long- he's already paid his dues and learned his lessons. Like Lao Tze it is time to depart, for your work is done, and the decline of the country is painful and tiring to witness....
"Did I Create the Sky?...".......1999-04-07
beautifully written, these spiritual meditations are some of kerouac's best and most humble, opening up the quiet side of kerouac often overlooked, simply amazing
