            Book Description

Raina is happy and relieved that her friends Kathleen and Holly found volunteering at the hospital rewarding. They loved their summers at the hospital so much they will be working for credit during their junior year.

Raina is also looking forward to spending as much time as possible with Hunter during their last year of high school together. Kathleen is still dating Carson, but they are at different schools and she’s worried it won’t last. And poor Holly’s still waiting for her parents to let up on their rules so she can actually go out on a date.

Everything is going well until Raina’s old boyfriend Tony shows up and threatens to ruin the thing that matters to Raina the most—her relationship with Hunter. But she isn’t the only one with a secret. When Raina’s mother reveals her family secret, Raina feels betrayed. Luckily she has Holly and Kathleen to lean on.

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Book.......2005-12-17

This book was an inspiration to me and has inspired many other young youth readers. Lurlene's books are some of the top inspiration books in the country, and by reading them you will have no problem being able to figure out why. Her books have touched many people and have given them great confidence. All of her books are award winning books in my perspective. She has been given great honors and awards, and she sure does deserve them. Her books are an inspiration in our society today, without such great literature we wouldn't be so great. Raina's Story is one of her inspiring books that I recommend you reading. It shares how life is as a high-school girl and how they have tough choices. Raina has had some tough decisions to make in her life, and when the person she turns to for help tells her a deep secret, it changes her life forever. Will Raina ever tell her anything again? You will have to read this book for yourself to figure out the extreme shock of the story.

4 out of 5 stars Sucks compared to Kathleen's Story.......2005-11-25

I aboslutely loved "Kathleen's Story"!!!!!!!!!!!! It was soooooooooo good, and I couldn't wait until "Raina's Story" came out. It wasn't that Raina's story was bad, cause it wasn't. It was just not as good. And I didn't like how some stuff turned out.

Ok, so there was still Kathleen, Holly, and Raina, only now it's their junior year, and they're volunteering to get credit for science.

Raina's getting really really serious about Hunter, but it's harder and harder to not go all the way with him. Then he finds out that she isn't pure, because something happened when she was 13... He starts to think about their relationship. He's so into god, and raina doens't even have a religion.

            Holly still has no boyfriend...

Kathleen and Carson are doing good, but then at a party she catches Carson kissing Stephanie! I couldn't belive it!!!!!!!!! She got really mad and calls it off. She misses him like crazy.

The worst part is, the ending didn't even say whether or not Carson and Kathleen got back together!!!!!!!!!!!!! What's with that?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Angels in Pink "Raina's Story".......2005-10-28

            Julia Reidlinger Period 2

I have read the book, Angels in Pink, by Lurlene McDaniel. Delacorte Press, 2005. This book is a non fiction. This book is geared towards young adults but I think that adults would like this book too. It is mostly about life in high school, and the obstacles that you face.
This book is about a girl named Raina and her friends and their life in high school and some problems that their friends and families face.
This book is very dramatic. A person who likes books that have dramatic irony would love this one. It is a page turner and you won't want to put it down until you are finished. The author thinks that Raina's mother is wrong for not telling her something important that happened to her that is going to change her life. I think that her mother was right she was trying to protect her. This book raised the problem of boyfriends and families split apart and a whole bunch of touchy subjects teenagers go through. This book didn't really affect my life because the subjects in this book don't relate to me.
This book is a must read for high school students and I hope all of you get a chance to read it.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first book, but it wasn't bad, either.......2005-08-04

After reading (and loving) Kathleen's Story, I knew that I was hooked on Lurlene McDaniel's "Angels in Pink" series, and anxiously awaited the release of the second book, RAINA'S STORY. It wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't necessarily a great book, either.

RAINA'S STORY still goes inside the lives of the three friends from the first book (Kathleen, Raina, and Holly), but the main focus is (obviously) on Raina St. James. RAINA'S STORY explores the relationship between Raina and her mother, her boyfriend Hunter, and Raina's lack of faith.
Everything is going good in Raina's life, until an old boyfriend shows up at her school and threatens to turn everything around. While she's worried about what might happen with him, she throws herself into her volunteer work at the local hospital, where she faces even more challenges, and gets the opportunity to save a woman's life.

The "Angels in Pink" series is still something that I enjoy reading, and McDaniel's books are always short enough that you can zip through them in about a day. Unfortunatley, RAINA'S STORY just didn't compare with Kathleen's Story. The "surprise ending" to this one was really predictable and didn't really leave you waiting for more. Regardless, I'll still be looking forward to the last book, but I'd recommend picking this up from the library instead of buying it.

                      Description:
The aroma profile of four Madeira wines from the most emblematic grape varieties, Malvazia, Boal, Verdelho and Sercial, has been studied by sensory analysis, quantitative gas chromatography-olfactometry (GC-O) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The aroma of the wines was characterized as candy, nutty, maderized, toasty, lacquer and dried fruit. The GC-O was carried out on extracts obtained by a dynamic headspace technique. The GC-O profiles of Madeira wines were compared to the GC-O profiles obtained from three young white monovarietal wines made with the same varieties so that the identification of odorants related to the particular process of elaboration of Madeira wines was possible. The aroma profile of Madeira wines was extremely complex, and was rich in sotolon, phenylacetaldehyde, wood extractable aromas, and lacked of the most important varietal aromas, such as linalool, 3-mercaptohexyl acetate and methoxypyrazines. A large number of potentially important and unknown odorants, most of them specific to Madeira wines, was also detected by GC-O. The GC-MS results confirmed most of the results of the GC-O study, which suggests that the proposed GC-O strategy is a useful tool for screening the presence of active odorants in wine.

                              Book Description

Huck Finn is a homeless rebel who loves freedom more than respectability. He isn't above lying and stealing, but he faces a battle with his conscience when he meets up with a runaway slave named Jim, who provides him with his first experience of love, acceptance, and a sense of responsibility.

The title character of this famous novel tells his own story in a straightforward narrative laced with shrewd, sharp comments on human nature. The boy's adventures along the Mississippi River form the framework of a series of moral lessons, revelations of a corrupt society, and contrasts of innocence and hypocrisy.

                              5 out of 5 stars A World War 2 "MUST HAVE".......2006-01-13

There are very few books written, and even fewer read, that will motivate or so move a reader to go to unusual lengths to want to know or try and understand who the protagonist of the story really was;who he must have been. This is just such a book, and this is no ordinary story. First, and foremost, it is a true personal account of one of thousands of American young men from a typical all American small town of the 1940's, who had everything going for him in his small southern town, with a bright future before him. Sports, a steady girl, maybe college. But the war in Europe and Pearl Harbor interrupted that future for Howard Goodner and the many like him. He stood on a train platform one morning and, like so many others, kissed his mother goodbye, assured her he'd be alright and went off to the army to become an aviator. But not everyone who trained could sit in that pilot or co-pilot's seat of the new B-24 Liberator heavy bomber. This amazing story is taken from the letters of SGT. Howard Goodner to his mother, and found, quite by accident, by Professor Thomas Childers locked in a desk, that Howard's mother, Childers' grandmother, had left for him upon her death. The letters, stuck in a drawer that must have been much too painful to open, describes in vivid detail the complete stateside training of a typical B-24 aircrew...the selection process, the daily routines, the nuances of the B-24, the incredible training accident rates and the midair accidents that Howard witnesses, that kill 10-20 men at a time, before even leaving the United States. The narrative is compelling and written so well that you feel that you are getting to know Howard Goodner as he operates the radio on board his plane and interacts with his crew. Goodner describes what a B-24 aircrew was like, personally, on the ground and in the air. The men in his crew...the quiet ones, the screwballs and the crewmember they even vote off the airplane. He describes the terror of the missions and the relief of seeing that home base runway. This is perhaps the best description of the training, deployment, combat and daily life in wartime England of an average WW2 American bomber aircrew ever written. The story is also a family one. Goodner's brother in law, also an airman, is within bike riding distance of his airfield in England and they often meet after either one returns from a mission over Germany or Holland. They write letters home telling of seeing each other and that all is okay, until the day that Howard's ship, The Black Cat, does not return from a mission. The entire crew but one is lost and the family's share an anguish for years afterward that Childer's describes in one of the few "Gold Star" families accounts you will read. Childer's writes movingly of the families of the crew as they desperately attempt to learn something from the War Department. Childer's narrative is such that you can feel the fear as though the fateful telegram is arriving at your own door. Victor Davis Hanson describes in his "Ripples of Battle" the ramifications of lives lost in wartime and the ripple effects, we almost never consider, on the surviving families. His theory is spot on in "Wings of Morning." It is a moving story of a nephew,Childers, who, decades later and against astronomical odds finds the lone survivor of the Black Cat and persuades him to return to England to a quiet deserted, unused airfield, where machines of war once roared and hundreds of men lived and worked. You will thrill as they find the cement pad where the Black Cat crew hut once stood and where Childer's uncle may have even had his bunk. You will become emotional when the surviving crewmember, now a senior citizen, while on the commercial flight into Germany to find the crash site of the Black Cat,tells Childers, "The last time I flew here was that day, with your uncle." The fatal flight was only two weeks before the war in Europe ended. This is a human history, a detailed incisive aviation history and a truly American family story. After reading this book I was so moved, unlike any book I have read of this period, that I drove to Cleveland, Tennessee with a colleague who also had read the book. We went to "Find" Howard Goodner. We saw all the surprisingly surviving places that Howard knew and that Prof. Childers describes in the book. The old hotel, the soda shop and even the old train platform where he said good-bye. Finally, we found Sgt. Howard Goodner. Or rather, he found us. Why we turned into that particular cemetery of the three that serviced the area we didn't know, and although we searched for his grave, after three hours searching in the hot sun we were ready to give up and drive the three hours home. We had ranged far from where we parked our car on the top of a hill and were heading back up to retrieve it, when just five feet from the car, we "accidentally" found the grave of SGT. Howard Goodner. Or, did we? We thanked him for his service and his sacrifice and we thanked Prof. Childers for writing such a vivid, moving and accurately engaging account of the short life of an average American hero.

A fascinating but tragic story of a US bomber crew that almost made it home safely. The war in Europe was in its closing days and they were assigned to make one of the last bombing raids over Germany and were shot down, only two survived. The author is a wonderful and gifted writer who describes the story of his uncle, the radio opeator on the B24, his enlistment in the Air Corp, the training, the close bond that develops with the other crew members, the terror of flying through enemy flak and fighting off German Fighters. It is a heart rending story wonderfully written.

Through the years, I've read a number of histories and memoirs on the Eighth Air Force in World War II. Many of those volumes, published over 6 decades, were more authoritative, complete, wide-ranging, and fact-filled than this volume.

Yet if I had to recommend a SINGLE book to give someone the flavor of all of those experiences represented by all those many books, this would be the one.

WINGS OF MORNING is an exceptional effort. The writing is wonderful; the information and tales presented colorful and telling. The author has a level of talent given only to a handful of non-fiction writers - the ability of a poet, to flash insights of feeling while describing facts. It's in the class of Bruce Catton and David McCullough.

In a plain and straight-forward manner, and without resorting to any plot gimmicks or other devices, this book wrings the reader through an emotional journey that doesn't start or stop around VE-Day. It is a *wise* book; informed by age and living.

                              I recommend it to everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Unique perspective from grandson who toured the base.......2005-04-14

This book had a personal effect on my relationship between myself and my grandfather.
I was researching the history of my grandfather's air wing when this book came out. After I read this book I sent a copy to my grandfather and it reopened a rich set of memories that he had filed away.
Of all the WW2 books I have read this is easily one of the best. It tells the heartfelt story of a group of young brave men.
The way the book begins with the memories of the author is most compelling. His description of the room of color just absolutely grabs you. I still get chills thinking about it.

When my grandfather returned to Eagleville Tn it wasn't considered polite to discuss the war. Cliff got back to living. He went to college, raised a family and he didn't discuss it for 50 years. After reinvigorating his memories from this fine, amazing book we had long discussions on his role as a tail gunner.
I later took a trip to Norwich to visit the memorial library and tour the remains of the air base (It's now a turkey farm!) and videotaped it for my grandfather who couldn't come due to the declining health of my grandmother.
We were able to determine that my grandfather's hut was in all likelihood the hut these men moved into when they arrived. We determined this from the dates in the book and the guide's knowledge of the site.

When Cliff's 35 missions were over he packed up and went home at the same time this ill fated crew arrived. Looks like timing is everything.

I also got to take Cliff to the reunion of wing at Charleston in the 8th Air Force Museum which is a worthwhile trip in itself.

If you have any dreams to visit these sites, take action now. The only regrets you will have is not doing it sooner before these great men and women are not around to answer your questions any more.
Thanks for your patience with this personal account.

                              5 out of 5 stars Duty Calls.......2003-09-11

This book is evidence of an America that will possibility never be again. An America where new immigrants and immigrants with a hundred years to their credit stood together in a life and death struggle. Where men from all sides of the track faced down the wickedness of a world gone.

This great book is a view of heroes who never expected to be and even today will not accept that designation -the only true character of a real hero.

Wings of Morning: The Story of the Last American Bomber Shot Down over Germany in World War II is one of the best-researched WWII stories to ever see print. But, what other than this could we expect from a historian of Dr. Childer's caliber? Well we did get more; much more, we were provided the opportunity to perceive a boy's love for an uncle he had never met and that is what puts heart into these pages. A warning here: on your reading your eyes may tear... but fear not the tears for there is no better eyewash.

There is not much more I can say without giving away the book, and I would never do that. What I will say is read Wings of Morning and you will soon be plunked down on the hardstand in the English countryside watching as Howard and his bothers-in-arms enter the Black Cat, looking back one last time as if to say "duty calls... see you later"...

Burne's penchant for creative interpretation of primary sources leads him to some unfounded conclusions. For example, his novel assertion that English archers were deployed in "wedges" within the overall battle line has been repudiated by historians including David Nicolle and Matthew Bennett.

The Fourteenth Century is "my" century, and in my career I've been a professional military officer, Medieval historian and author. Perhaps that's why I admire Lt-Col Alfred H. Burne, D.S.O. and Fellow, Royal Historical Society, who wrote this valuable history book back in the 1950s using his own combination of skills as historian, professional military tactician in the British Army, and story-teller. After nearly 50 years THE CRECY WAR remains the best retelling I've read of the English military campaigns in France during the first half of the Fourteenth Century. No other book written in English approaches it for insight as well as information.

Like certain other Medievalists who served in World War II, Burne was assigned to the Allied staff developing the strategy of "Operation Overlord" -- the Normandy Invasion -- since the landings were planned for the La Manche coast near Cotentin, a few miles from the 1346 landfall of the English army. The entire 1944 buildup to D-Day, not only the landing site but the earlier diversions, intelligence gathering and disinformation campaign, were deliberately patterned after Edward III's successful Normandy invasion of 1346. Unfortunately the WWII forward thrust through France was a great deal more difficult and costly than the 1346 chevauchee that led to England's overwhelming victory at Crecy, then to the capture of Calais in 1347.

I share Burne's dubious, occasionally hostile, opinion of King Edward III of England. Edward's obsession with the throne of France caused social, economic and political upheavals throughout Europe and the unnecessary loss of tens of thousands of lives, with the suffering falling most heavily upon the poor of France. Burne even compares the English king to Hitler. Edward's motives were primarily those of self-aggrandizement, and he was not a particularly talented battle leader, commanding the Reserve division at Crecy, which meant that he stayed out of the fight and watched it from a tall windmill (rebuilt in our time as an observation tower for tourists). The king had the good luck to possess brilliant and loyal kinsmen and noblemen, and from them he chose as his field commanders some of the finest Britain has ever known.

One of Edward's leading generals was his first cousin, William Bohun, Earl of Northampton (1312?-1360), 29 or 30 years old when he led the English to a stunning victory at Morlaix in Brittany in 1342. Morlaix was the first English victory in France, other than in English-held Gascony, since Richard the Lion-Heart's campaigns. At Crecy, William Bohun was still only 34 years old when Edward chose him as co-commander of the Second "Battle" (or division) during the battle. He was in fact the lead commander of the Second, since his colleague was the Earl of Arundel, a mediocre soldier whose personal scandals had made him unpopular with other magnates, but who had to be placated since his vast wealth helped to finance the invasion and the king was deeply indebted to him. (Northampton also owed Arundel. Primary sources indicate that he was almost always heavily in debt.)

A few historians like T.F. Tout have recognized Northampton's prowess as both strategist and leader of troops. He never lost a battle. Oddly, he was the quiet one of a pair of twins -- the other died very young in the wars in Scotland -- who might never have been noticed for command if his affable twin had lived. Burne's contribution is to give us valuable glimpses into the warrior career of this unobtrusive "unknown soldier." These include crossing a broken bridge over the Seine on a 1-foot-wide plank, taking the French by surprise and assuring the English command of the right bank. Northampton's genius lay not in swashbuckling, however, but in strategic planning. Early on he recognized the excellence of his grandfather Edward I's tactic of massed Welsh and English archers, unused between Edward I's death in 1307 and the early 1330s, during the border wars with Scotland. During these campaigns, while still only a youthful knight in his early 20s, Tout believed that William Bohun began drilling his men in combined formations: massed archers working alongside unmounted knights whose swords protected the archers and "hedges" of pikemen similar to the schiltrons of Robert Bruce. His armies became expert at planting hidden "booby-traps." These combinations proved formidable against armored cavalry and resulted in English victories not only at Crecy but earlier at Halidon and Morlaix, and (resuscitated by Northampton's great-grandson Henry V) at Agincourt. Of the major English land victories in this period, only the Black Prince's generalship at Poitiers and Najera made use of old-fashioned cavalry, and Poitiers was won more by luck than skill.

Burne was the first to give us details of Northampton's swift march over the mountains of Brittany to catch the French by surprise, the archery-dominated battle of Morlaix, the battle and aftermath of Crecy, his leadership during the siege of Calais, and his service as a diplomat, up to the invasion of France in 1359-60 when he suddenly drops out of history, either ill or wounded. Perhaps because he died so young, under the age of 50, Northampton is forgotten. Even in his own day he was so retiring that he was passed over as one of the Founder knights of the Order of the Garter (ca. 1348), and had to wait in line for his nomination despite overwhelming qualifications. One historian (not Burne) has speculated that King Edward preferred amusing courtiers and that William Bohun may have inherited his father's melancholy personality. Even so, this Fourteenth Century Earl of Northampton might be ranked the greatest general, next to Wellington, that England has ever produced.

I've owned a hardback copy of THE CRECY WAR for years and am delighted that this fine book has been reprinted. My old copy is dogeared, yellowed, underlined to death, and otherwise difficult to read straight through -- so here's our chance to buy an inexpensive paperback of a valuable resource. Anyone with the slightest interest in Medieval warfare should do the same.

                                            Book Description

Each of us has experienced "down  times"--setbacks at work, in relationships, in our inner  lives--times where nothing seems to go right. Most of  us have also felt as if we've failed at times, as  well. But what is the difference between those who  succeed and those who fail? The answer is simple:  attitude.

In this practical and  empowering new book, Dr. Robert H. Schuller, the  host and master of possibilities" of the  weekly telecast The Hour Of Power  shows how to overcome the fear-and the groundless  excuses-that keep us from success, fulfillment, and  happiness. Here Dr. Schuller reveals his own  unique formula for never-ending  success:

                                            - The amazing power of possibility  thinking

                                            - The 22 stops on the  road map to success

                                            - The 4 Cs of  "success thinking"

                                            - How to  banish "impossibility thinking" from your  life

                                            - The "miracle  ingredients" of faith and hope... and much  more

Your dreams, Dr. Schuller tells us, no matter  how impossible, are the seeds of your success!  Now you can learn how to nurture and cultivate your  possibilities, uproot the negatives, and watch  your dreams blossom into reality.

                                            2 out of 5 stars Corny.......2002-07-13

I am passing through a difficult stage in my life, and thought that this book might help. I happily ordered it and when it came, devoured it. The thing is, after a few chapters, I am more inspired to RETURN THIS BOOK or to just throw it out.

There are just too much Christian stuff. Not that I am against religion, but the wordings here are TOO corny, TOO flaky, TOO MUCH cliche. It's so pretentious, as if Schuller thinks people are so gullible.

I don't like the way he approaches the subject either. Not much strategy, just pure preaching, with not much stand to it. I got bored and UNinspired after a while, and yes, even disgusted.

So, my recommendation? Buy some other book.

Many are not fortunate to view the 'Hour of Power' show but Robert Schuller's books are indeed great Spirit builders and I always possess them as a treasure to read, share and part the wisdom to let life to bloom to the fullest. Many a times we fail in our endeavours, face conflicts, let down, get hurt n pain, relationship hang ups or any down-time set backs in life. All through the way, its attitude that makes a big difference! It's during such times, we need to view life in a positive mode of way to turn every dream into a possibility with hope and faith. Rob has practical view when he focus on 'Failure is just a bend in the road, not a dead end' It's knowing how to nurture and cultivate possibilities, pull out from negative attitude and turn dreams to reality! You have a vision and Success is never ending, Failure is never final...Another 'Must' pick by your bediside on the shelf!

                                                  Book Description

Scientists, theologians, and the spiritually inclined, as well as all those concerned with humanity's increasingly widespread environmental impact, are beginning to recognize that our ongoing abuse of the earth diminishes our moral as well as our material condition. Many people are coming to believe that strengthening the bonds among spirituality, science, and the natural world offers an important key to addressing the pervasive environmental problems we face.

The Good in Nature and Humanity brings together 20 leading thinkers and writers - including Ursula Goodenough, Lynn Margulis, Dorion Sagan, Carl Safina, David Petersen, Wendell Berry, Terry Tempest Williams, and Barry Lopez - to examine the divide between faith and reason, and to seek a means for developing an environmental ethic that will help us confront two of our most imperiling crises: global environmental destruction and an impoverished spirituality. The book explores the ways in which science, spirit, and religion can guide the experience and understanding of our ongoing relationship with the natural world and examines how the integration of science and spirituality can equip us to make wiser choices in using and managing the natural environment. The book also provides compelling stories that offer a narrative understanding of the relations among science, spirit, and nature.

Grounded in the premise that neither science nor religion can by itself resolve the prevailing malaise of environmental and moral decline, contributors seek viable approaches to averting environmental catastrophe and, more positively, to achieving a more harmonious relationship with the natural world. By bridging the gap between the rational and the religious through the concern of each for understanding the human relation to creation, The Good in Nature and Humanity offers an important means for pursuing the quest for a more secure and meaningful world.
