Lanky lizards! The slinkster-cool novels in Francesca Lia Block's Weetzie Bat series have finally been compiled into one delicious volume. All of the ethereal, mesmerizing titles are here--Weetzie Bat, Witch Baby, Cherokee Bat and the Goat Guys, Missing Angel Juan, and Baby Be-Bop--together like the big, beautiful family described on their pages. Block's unique, poetic style immediately draws readers into an intoxicating magical-realist world populated by empathetic, original characters (as well as a few ghosts, fairies, and genies): "He kissed her. A kiss about apple pie à la mode with the vanilla creaminess melting in the pie heat. A kiss about chocolate, when you haven't eaten chocolate in a year. A kiss about palm trees speeding by, trailing pink clouds when you drive down the Strip sizzling with champagne. A kiss about spotlights fanning the sky and the swollen sea spilling like tears all over your legs."
We cheer for these young women and men as they struggle with the universal trials of growing up, finding love, and letting go--all within the vivid, glittering, urban embrace of Los Angeles. Block's stories about finding yourself, being true to your dreams, and believing in what might seem impossible will inspire teens and adults alike with the resounding messages of hope and the transformative power of love. --Brangien Davis
Book Description
Francesca Lia Block's luminous, postmodern fairy tales chronicle the thin line between fear and desire, pain and pleasure, cutting loose and holding on in a world where everyone is vulnerable to the most beautiful and dangerous angel of all: love.
Customer Reviews:
LOVE!.......2007-08-11
All five novels are truly exceptional. Francesca Lia Block has a wonderful mind and a very unique writing style that is so welcome in this world of the normal traditional authors of today. I recommend the Wheetzie Bat books to anyone who wants to read something captivating and perhaps even a bit 'out there' (but in the best of ways.)
Magical writing that brings to life characters in search of love and personal identity. Very highly recommend to all readers.......2007-08-11
Generations of young women and their lovers and friends grow up surrounded by genies, by love, and by the magical world of urban Los Angeles. Dangerous Angels is a compilation of the original Weetzie Bat book series, five novels that make up stories two generations--their love stories, deaths, births, and artistic adventures. The text is vivid, rich with sensual description and the hipster-cool slang that surrounds Weetzie's family. The magical-realist style intertwines angels, genies, and spirits with real-world issues of finding and nurturing love, having sex, creating identity and independence, being gay, and coping with death. The result is a remarkably engrossing, readable, and magical writing style that brings to life both Los Angeles and the characters, and deals with difficult, even controversial issues, that are rarely found in other young-adult books. I very highly recommend it.
It is difficult to do a plot summary of the Dangerous Angels books because the compilation contains so many books and the plot of each book is secondary to all the other factors that make up the text. In one story, Weetzie finds love for herself and for her best friend when a genie grants her wishes. In others, Weetzie's daughters struggle with their own identity and the power and music of their group of friends. In another, Weetzie's best friend comes to terms with his homosexuality. The plots are important, but what matters more is what character growth they prompt, what issues they deal with, and what text surrounds them.
The primary theme of the book is love--the most beautiful and most dangerous angel. Love, however, is mixed in with themes of personal identity, family, independence, and sexuality. The author does not skate over difficult and controversial issues, but neither does she subject them to lengthy angsting. Instead, life difficulties, like its genies, are presented as facts and are treated with the same open acceptance. In my opinion, this makes the book a wonderful and eye-opening read for young adults that is still relevant to grown-ups.
Finally, the delight of Dangerous Angels is the writing style. It is urban magical-realistic and richly, sensually detailed. Action, both of the characters and of the overall plot, is presented in short direct sentences. Description is also presented in short direct sentences. But in both cases, characters act and the world appears in ways that are distinctly magical. The end effect is a quickly-paced, no-nonsense style that nonetheless makes the books sing with lush description and very real magic. It makes very little sense to discuss the style when it so easy to simply quote it. One example: "Fifi's house was a Hollywood cottage with one of those fairy-tale roofs that looked like someone has spilled silly sand. There were roses and lemon trees in the garden and two bedrooms inside the house--one painted rose and the other aqua. The house was filled with plaster Jesus statues, glass butterfly ashtrays, paintings of clowns, and may kinds of coasters. Weetzie and Dirk had always loved the house." The writing style is a joy to read and sweeps the reader into the magical world of Weetzie and her family, bringing to life their stories and their challenges. It is unlike any other book you'll read, and I highly recommend it to all readers of all age groups.
These stories changed my life!.......2007-05-22
I first picked up Witch Baby when was thirteen..then promptly devoured the rest. Weetzie Bat, Goat Guys, Baby Be-Bop, Missing Angel Juan..... The stories transport you to a modern fairytale land. When I was growing up, these stories inspired me to pursue my fairytale dreams in this midst of harsh realities.
My favorites change as I travel through different phases of my life...Angel Juan is one of the best breakup stories ever! Goat Guys addresses the problems of being swept up in the material world and finding balance. Baby Be-Bop is about discovering your true self through your family. Weetzie and Witch Baby give two different perspectives...having a boyfriend/having babies, or being an outcast/finding where you belong.
Block transport her readers into a sensual world where genies and angels mix and mingle with the "real" people. She ask us to see the beauty beyond the hurt and ugliness of their lives. She lovingly paints a picture of modern day Los Angeles, all the while reminding us that the common denominator in our daily lives is love.
I can understand who some people might find these stories trite...Block goes off on fantasmagoric verbal riffing on every other page. She rhapsodizes about food, music, flowers, colors. If you enjoy Angela Carter or Colette, anyone who uses words like rich paint on a canvas...then you will find these stories satisfying as a Oki Dog Burrito.
apple pie a la mode indeed!!.......2007-04-24
i can't even begin to describe how much i love this book. i read it when i was about 15 or 16. i was trolling through the public library and saw all the weetzie bat books but they were all individual. i fell in love. some time later i went back and i found them in one big, fat collection and i was completely thrilled.
there's such a wonderful dreaminess to this book. the writing is so beautifully detailed. even now, almost 8 years later, i'm still constantly reading it. this book has a permanent place in my heart.
Young adults deserve better (so do adults).......2007-01-27
The characters and the story are shallow, totally lacking in depth. The writer seems to free associate and wanders from page to page. It was like reading a comic book plot or worse.I read books for my teens before they read them. This book was a huge disappointment. It is not appropriate in other ways either. I do not recommend it at all.

Book Description
Recent advances in imaging technology reveal, in real time and great detail, critical changes in living cells and organisms. This manual is a compendium of emerging techniques, organized into two parts: specific methods such as fluorescent labeling, and delivery and detection of labeled molecules in cells; and experimental approaches ranging from the detection of single molecules to the study of dynamic processes in organelles, organs, and whole animals. Although presented primarily as a laboratory manual, the book includes introductory and background material and could be used as a textbook in advanced courses. It also includes a DVD containing movies of living cells in action, created by investigators using the imaging techniques discussed in the book.
The editors, David Spector and Robert Goldman, whose previous book was Cells: A Laboratory Manual, are highly respected investigators who have taught microscopy courses at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, the Marine Biology Laboratory at Woods Hole, and Northwestern University.

Book Description
In the last few years, multiscale methods have lead to spectacular progress in our understanding of complex physical systems and have stimulated the development of very refined mathematical techniques. At the same time on the experimental side, equally spectacular progress has been made in developing experimental machinery and techniques to test the foundations of quantum mechanics. In view of this progress, this volume is very timely; it is the first text totally devoted to multiscale methods as applied to various areas of physics and to the relative developments in mathematics.
The book is aimed at mathematical physicists, theoretical physicists, applied mathematicians, and experimental physicists working in such areas as decoherence, quantum information, and quantum optics.

Cajun anybody.......2007-08-18
Just the fact that Sebastien Durand is Creole makes this book perfect. lol. Anyway, I really liked how Frankie wasn't your usual next top model. She was frumpy and hid herself, and Sebastien still noticed her beauty. But more than anything,I was amazed at thriller going on in the background. When I finally got to the end, I was so shocked to find out who had been wreaking so much havoc, that I hadto go back and reread to see if she'd given any clues as to what was going on. This book was perfectly put together, as are all of her novels.
Great Read.......2007-08-17
I have read several of Ms. Smith books and this was absolute the best. You want be disappointed, I can't wait for the next book. Keep up the good work an outstanding job.
Just one Whisper!!.......2007-08-03
This book was simply awesome. The perfect mix of romance and mystery! This is a must read! You are one of my favorite authors...please keep them coming!!!
(RAW Rating: 4.5) - The Spider Lady.......2007-07-29
Maureen Smith has penned a riveting tale with WHISPER MY NAME. From the start, the story is engrossing and thrilling with the makings of a classic romance with the added ingredients of familial love, strife and mystery. WHISPER MY NAME is the unforeseen meeting between Francesca "Frankie" Purnell, a professor of entomology, and Sebastien Durand, a detective with the San Antonio, Texas police department.
Upon eyeing Frankie in a coffee house, Sebastien is smitten with her beauty despite her homely appearance. Dubbed the Spider Lady by her peers and her students, Frankie has no interest in changing her clothing or her hairstyle. Her only interests are her students and her research. As Sebastein ogles her, he receives a call about a murder in the city. Unable to make an introduction, he leaves the scene to begin his investigation. The investigation leads him to a murdered female with a spider freshly tattooed on her body. During his research he stumbles across an article, written by Frankie, on the Mexican Blood Walker spider, the same spider tattooed on the murder victim. Assuming the author is a man, he locates the professor's home to interview her on her findings and is surprised to find the object his affection is Frankie. This meeting is the beginning of a casual relationship, which spirals into more.
The author has provided a very vivid and picturesque imagery of the area in and around San Antonio. The study of spiders is summarized in a logical manner and the mystery surrounding the numerous murders, held a suspenseful edge to the end. While several suspects were depicted in minute fashion, the identity of the culprit was not obvious; this made for a shocking revelation. Furthermore, the author has provided a backdrop of sibling rivalry and jealously which was engaging and profound. This coupled with the relationship of Sebastien and his grandmother and their ascent from hurricane ravaged New Orleans, produced a multi-layered story filled with longing, passion and affection.

EXCELLENT STORY BUT..........2007-07-25
Great book. Interesting characters and very hot scenes. I'm giving 4 stars because I think the end could have been more developed and detailed like the rest of the story. Everything was solved too fast in a couple of pages.

Book Description
An international bestseller about the blackest period of Argentinean history.
Luz, a twenty-year-old Argentinean, is on vacation in Madrid with her husband and newborn son. But Luz has a secret mission-to find her real father. Carlos was a desaparecidos, one of the many political activists who disappeared in Argentina during its dictatorship in the seventies. Her mother, a political prisoner, was killed while trying to flee the country, and Luz is brought up by a wealthy, politically influential couple. There are only three people who know Luz's real identity: her adopted father Eduardo, racked by guilt at this deception; her adopted grandfather, the powerful and corrupt General Alfonso who is determined to keep the secret buried; and Miriam, the prostitute who befriended Luz's real mother in her final days and who returns from exile determined to tell Luz the truth. Met by politics, wealth, and corruption at every turn, Luz's search to find her father ultimately turns into a dangerous fight to save herself.
In this taut, riveting thriller, Elsa Osorio has written a powerful story about a young girl's quest to find her identity. At the core, Luz's story mirrors that of the Argentinean people: how can we hope to understand ourselves if our history is shrouded in secrets and tragedy?

Book Description
The Oatman Massacre is among the most famous and dramatic captivity stories in the history of the Southwest. In this riveting account, Brian McGinty explores the background, development, and aftermath of the tragedy, in which all but three members of a Mormon family were murdered by southwestern Indians. The attackers took thirteen-year-old Olive and eight-year-old Mary Ann captive and left their wounded fourteen-year-old brother Lorenzo for dead. After about a year, Olive and Mary Ann were traded to a Mohave Indian community, but only Olive lived to be rescued and reunited with her brother at Fort Yuma five years later.
Using diaries, letters, and other firsthand accounts, as well as recent studies of nineteenth-century southwestern Indian peoples, McGinty dispels myths and corrects omissions in earlier sensationalized versions of the story.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating.......2007-03-21
I love books that review actual accounts of the people that were there. This book does a good job of that. It's only weakness is that the author goes a little too in depth into trivial things. The story line was great.
Good factual book.......2006-10-20
While this book was very factually accurate in its description of the events which shaped Olive Oatman's life forever, at times it was a very slow read. Don't get me wrong, it was very well written and researched but it just didn't have that kind of gripping energy that keeps you up late reading. It is an excellent account and definitely worth the read though so please don't let me discourage you from reading it, I just felt that it at times, dwelled too much on the factual correctness of Royal Strattons original account of the incidents and not enough on being the kind of compelling read that keeps you coming back for more. But hey, that's just me...
A BOOK TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT.......2006-10-12
For those of us who read on the history of the west, this book has long been waited for. Before this study the most accepted history of that event was one published in the late 1800s which omitted much, and made up as much, with much bias against Indians in general. This book page by page, passage by passage, should now become the standard text of our times.
The author allows the book to progress as if it were an investigation into all things historical and cultural that focus on that event of 1851. One of the more revealing aspects of the book is his focus on the fervor of the religous climate of the day, especially the turmoil of the Mormons seeking a person to replace Joseph Smith. Many things become clear as to why the Oatman family from Vermont, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, ended up alone on the Gila River the day the Indians struck. That Olive and Lorenzo did not perish with the other members of the family is a small miracle.
As usual the University of Oklahoma has issued a valuable addition to our western history in general and one family in specific.
Well done.
Semper Fi.
The historical study of the killing and capturing of the Oatman family at the hands of Native Americans.......2006-05-07
The Oatman Massacre: A Tale Of Desert Captivity And Survival by Brian McGinty is the historical study of the killing and capturing of the Oatman family at the hands of Native Americans. Motivated by his religious beliefs as a dissident Mormon, Roys Oatman set off for Gila and Colorado rivers' intersection with his family of nine and followers seeking to settle in a fertile country he called the "Land of Bashan". The Oatman Massacre is the descriptive story of what came to be called the "Oatman Massacre" in the mid-nineteenth century when all members of that doomed family were killed except for eight-year-old Mary Ann and thirteen-year-old Olive Oatman, and their wounded fourteen-year-old brother Lorenzo Oatman. The young women's captivity amidst the Mohaves tribe, and the experiences of Olive throughout the eight years prior to her rescue is ably recounted. The Oatman Massacre is a remarkable account and a welcome contribution to understanding the Mohaves culture, Mormon history, and a particularly harrowing event on the American frontier.
Makes History Read Like a Novel.......2005-08-30
Mr. McGinty's book is a must read for anyone interested in American history and the complex relationship between whites and Native Americans in the 19th Century. The author has a talent for writing that makes for an easy read, and has obviously spent years researching the subject. I would also highly recommend this book to those who normally read fiction because Olive Oatman's life fits into the category of a life that is more fascinating than fiction.
Interesting information is provided about the Oatmans' trek west, the early Mormon church, and the Native Americans of the Southwest. The portions of the book dealing with Olive's life among the Indians and the speculation that she probably had children while among the Mohave Indians were particularly interesting. Equally remarkable is how Olive delt with her return to white society. The underlying issues of the clash between cultures, the role of women, religion, and popular culture prompt the reader to think critically about these issues.

The Missouri Side of the Story.......2006-08-16
Quantrill is often maligned as a psychopathic killer and a despotic guerilla. John McCorkle not only refutes this common claim by the writers of the winner's history, but shows that Quantrill was a compassionate and honorable man. He shows a side to the War of Northern Aggression that is rarely told.
The introductions decry the author's side of the story, but they provide no evidence that is substantiated. The factual errors that McCorkle relates can easily be relegated to the fact that he was in his 80's when he told his story to O.S. Barton and the ravages of time on the memory are well noted throughout history.
This book is a rare glimpse into what made the Missouri Bushwhacker, or Partisan Ranger as they were properly known, what they were. What they did, how they fought, for what and whom they fought: it's all in here and with a lively color that brings to life the way life was in those most trying of times.
Outstanding but for the short commentary.......2006-02-19
I Highly recommend McCorkles first-hand account. It is not often that we can resolve much of the differing views of history with first-hand accounts by those that were there during most of the events. I would have given this book a five had it not been for the very "out-of-place" commentary at the front of the book by someone named Hattaway (of West Point New York). I taped the aprox 25 pages together with an adivosry to skip this section as it only appeared to be added to censor McCorkles account and done in very poor taste. Why would someone want to take the time to distort someone's personal account of history. The Introduction by Barton is done very well however. Why would the publisher think that a commentary should be added when the work already had an introduction? I think the Commentary might have been added after the book was submitted just to try to promulgate a pre-conceived notion of history. Skip the commentary and its a great short work.
WISH WE HAD MORE LIKE THIS ONE.......2004-08-28
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Any interested individual or serious student of this era must read this book. I am fortunate enough to live in the present day setting where the author's story took place. This is the real thing. I only wish there had been more works of this quality produced and saved. We would have a much better insight to those times.
Three Years With Quantrill.......2001-12-05
Although I don't like giving a 5 star rating to any book this book deserves 6! This is the real stuff, pre WWII, pre WWI, PRE-TV! It was written at a time before historic brainwashing by movies and television existed. Before people were self conscious about telling the truth. We can see the actual format of the "Civil" War sentiments. He reveals the concepts of dying, of The North, Slavery, and other aspects of the era that we are usually forced to accept from modern day writings, reflecting only current, politically correct viewpoints. The down to earth flow of this book is very enjoyable and is great reading for anyone with interest in this subject matter.
Excellent firsthand information.......1999-04-17
If you are looking for truth about what happened in Missouri during the War betwen the states this book is for you. The best way to learn what really happened is to read firsthand accounts and that's what this book offers. No one sided historical author can screwup or argue with accurate eyewitness reports. This book records the pure hard facts.

Customer Reviews:
Hunter's other book is better.......2006-01-02
The author appears to not have known what kind of book she wanted this to be and opted, unfortunately, for a brief history of Asia, going back centuries, instead of a tightly packed account of the killer disease in the world's most populated continent. Hunter's previous work, the excellent Black Death: AIDS in Africa, provided readers with an armful of information about AIDS, WHO, treatment, government policies, etc. The mission of this book was to focus on the feminine perspective, and provide some personal insights from infected people. In that respect, it was helpful. The bulk of the text, however, literally recounts dozens of pages of political and social history of minimal pertinence to either AIDS or other diseases generally, taking `background' information to an unnecessary extreme. This book would have been far better with these parts edited out, even at the cost of producing a much thinner volume

Customer Reviews:
This book is not meant ...........2006-07-31
to be rushed through while reading it. It is a book meant to be savored, thought-upon and reflected upon. This book is haunting in its thoughts and language as the author travels the backcountry of the Great Smoky Mountains. It is also a book on the re-introduction of the Red Wolf back into its natural habitat. It is also a book that explores the history of the Cherokees, who used to roam over the land and lived off the vast wealth of the forest, mountains and rivers before driven off in the unnatural (or perhaps natural) stem of progress. It is a reflective book meant to be savored over a period of time, as the language of the author is dense, lyrical and very thoughtful. It is a beautiful book. It is a sad book. It is a book meant to capture a time now lost to the mists of time.
I picked this book up while visiting the Great Smoky Mountains last September. Out of the pile of books I bought then, this was the first one I picked up and I put it down after a month since it was too much to read in the midst of a crazy lifestyle. I picked it up again several months later to savor the words and thoughts of this author. Then I put it down again. This last few days, I picked it up since I have a craving to go back to the Mountains and teach my children what has happened in the past and what may happen in the future ~~ and I finished it in two days.
Christopher Camuto is a wonderful naturalist writer and a keen observer. I have only been to the Great Smoky Mountains once and we did your basic touristy things simply because my boys were too young to even hike the regular trails. That doesn't mean that we're not going to eventually because we do want to in the future. We want our children to preserve their heritage, what is left of it. We want them to see the magical wonder of being so close to nature and see the natural beauty of this world. And reading this book helped confirm that "want." Camuto goes back and forth from talking about the Red Wolf program in the Great Smoky Mountains, the Cherokee visions and his own observations while hiking along forgotten trails. They all tie together in a beautiful book that is sure to be treasured.
Need an introduction to Mother Nature and her history? I think you should start with this one. It's an unforgettable journey back through the mists of time.

Have you ever read a book............2005-04-15
Have you ever read a book that you loved reading so much you could not stand to finish? Another Country was such a book for me. I have felt so alone for so long as I have both loved my time in the outdoors and equally mourned the loss of it. Every time I pass a mountain and see the red-dirt scar of a new home perched atop it, every time I see a wooded lot scalped completely clean of all life for a new development, I mourn. Christopher Camuto has helped me feel less alone and helped me more completely appreciate the oft-ignored gift of beauty, variety, and history that the land, the Cherokee, and the wolf give us.
Another Country: Journeying Toward the Cherokee Mountains.......2001-06-27
I've searched for years for just the right book that sums up my feelings for lost wilderness and finally found it with this book. I find Mr. Camuto's contrast with William Bartram's descriptions of the mountains both startling and sad. I've walked these mountains for over 30 years and in just the last 10 have I begun to realize the tragic consequences of overdevelopment and urban sprawl. Mountains and streams once largely clean and pristine now are considered off limits for fishing and drinking and I wonder why we have no love for the complexity of our natural environment. Like a Sand County Almanac, Chris Camuto has begun a modern discussion of the land ethic. An ethic our country, I fear, has so far refused to acknowledge or accept.
Another Country-Journeying Toward The Cherokee Mountains.......2001-01-02
Another Country is a search for the soul of a land almost destroyed. Christopher Camuto writes a powerful narrative describing his exploration of the Cherokee homeland in the appalachians. He seeks communion, a connection he can sense in what is left of the natural landscape and wildness around him. It is as elusive as the dying Cherokee myths, as tangible as the arrowheads and village sites he finds. Camuto refers to the Appalacians as the Cherokee Mountains, their former nomenclature, because it is to the Cherokees they really belong. The rape and exploitation of their land parallels the rape and exploitation of their culture. Camuto's search for a wildness, that now remains only in remnants, is set in counterpoint to the reintroduction of the red wolf into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The most important clan animal of the Cherokee, it is symbolic of the differences between the Cherokee and the early Europeans. One revered its wildness and sought to preserve it. The other despised and killed it. One honored the wolf's home, seeking harmony with the land and its spirits. The other saw something untamed that must be destroyed. The author's journey begins as the wolves are being set free. Like many of the members of this first Canus Rufus release who step beyond their shrinking boundaries, Camuto confronts the vestiges of civilization at almost every turn. Set against continual references to Native-American mythology, and the history of the area, Camuto's book allows the reader to share his insight into the Cherokee view of the world. Unlike many who write about early culture, he does not attempt to steal it as his own. His statement that he is not Cherokee and thus can never totally understand, adds credibility to the objectiveness of his observations. It also demonstrates humbleness of endeavor, a bow of respect to the Cherokee nation. The book is firmly rooted in place as it combines the ethereal with the tangible landscape. Those who cherish wildness and honor those first here, will also treasure this book. In many ways , it is a sad obituary, lamenting that which was, as it examines what is left. The reintroduction of the red wolf represents one small, but hopeful, step in the restoration of that which is lost.
Forgotten history.......2000-10-02
I've hiked and fished the Southern Highlands for years, especially the area in and around the Smoky Mt. National Park. Reading Another Country has shown me this place in a completely new light. He compares these mountains at one point to a palimpsest--a scraped-over parchment on which old texts leave faint traces. This book records Camuto's efforts to track these traces, which of course are quickly vanishing if not already gone. By giving these mountains back their ancient names, by telling stories the Cherokee told their children about their homeland, by delving into the natural and human history of the places he walks, by honoring the memories of the ones who are gone, and by contextualizing the beleaguered efforts to bring the red wolf back to its former ground, Camuto opens up layer upon layer of meaning for us who seek out the last wild places without always knowing why. An unforgettable book.
