Book Description
This is an extensively illustrated laboratory manual of transmission electron microscopy techniques for the laboratory technician, graduate student, or researcher. Chapters begin with a general discussion, move on to the chemicals and equipment required for the method being described and conclude with a step-by-step presentation of the method and instructions for the preparation of solutions. Notes at the end of each chapter warn of possible pitfalls and outline "tricks of the trade". The methods and techniques outlined have been tested for over ten years in clinical and research laboratory situations, and are entirely reliable. Practical Electron Microscopy covers fixation, dehydration and embedding, semithin and thin sectioning, the electron microscope, and photography. For this new edition, the chapters on photography and the electron microscope have been completely rewritten and two new chapters have been added, one on immunoelectron microscopy using colloidal gold, and one dealing with such special techniques as retrieving specimens from paraffin and handling nasal brushings and blood samples.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-10-17
Libby Brin is the popular girl. She has the right friends, the right clothes, and goes to all the right parties. Where she leads, the school follows, from "pencil day" to "funny walk day." But she's hiding a deep, dark secret. She's bored. No matter what she does, she doesn't feel alive. Which might explain the temporary insanity that causes her to sign up for an internship...at the zoo. When she's assigned to a team with two of the biggest losers in school she worries that her life as the Queen of Cool might be over.
In this light-hearted and funny novel, Castelluci explores typical teenage themes--finding yourself, and discovering what true friendship means--in her usual frank and honest style. Her prose is sparse, with no extra words or long descriptions, and short chapters make for a quick read. She unflinchingly portrays the reality of teenage life, from drinking at parties, to making out with boys, with a non-judgemental attitude that lets the reader draw their own conclusions about Libby's actions. Readers will be able to relate to Libby's struggles to feel like she belongs as she's changing and learning new things about herself, and growing away from friends she's had her whole life.
Recommended, especially for older, reluctant teen readers.

Cool, light read.......2006-08-15
Queen of Cool is a light, cheerful, quick read that will mostly appeal to older teen girls. There is some language and sex, but certainly no more than on primetime TV (or in most teen's lives, for that matter).
Libby is a popular, trend-setting high school student who seems to have it all: shallow but available friends, pleasantly low-impact parents, money, a no-strings-attached relationship with a handsome boy, an active social life. Why, then, is she so unhappy? She just can't seem to shake that "is this all there is?" feeling.
Libby's ever-present ennui leads her to impulsively sign up for a school internship at the local zoo where she is paired with Tina (aka "Tiny"), a dwarf schoolmate, and Sheldon, a brilliant but socially and fashionably challenged science nerd. At first Libby glides along, letting Tina and Sheldon do all the work, but gradually she comes to like her new job. Peer pressure, of course, leads Libby to make a decision that has unfortunate impact on her relationship with her new friends, and with her employers at the zoo. Will she be able to redeem herself? Will there be a happy ending? Yes, of course, there will-- this is light and frothy fiction--everything always works out in the end. The point of this kind of novel isn't to surprise, or shock, or provide a trick ending. The journey is what's important.
In Queen of Cool, the journey is a satisfying one. Libby, initially a shallow and irritating person, becomes likable. The supporting cast does its job--the popular kids are delightfully loath-able, and the nerdy kids are quirky but fun. There is plenty of sometimes very witty humor, and Libby (and perhaps the reader) learns a lesson, almost in spite of herself.
Queen of Cool is a literary lightweight, but I liked it because I think that it depicts the inner-life of a teenage girl very well. Recently there has been much talk about "trashy" YA novels aimed at girls that are full of sex, and language, and alcohol, and drugs without any redeeming value (the Gossip Girls series being a case in point). It is my opinion--humble though it is--that teens, like adults, would rather read books that are realistic and believable than those that are not. And that's what we want, isn't it? For them to read the books.
Fast Read with Big Impact.......2006-07-03
THE QUEEN OF COOL is a short, fast read about Libby, the coolest girl in school. But is Libby really too cool for school, or just bored with her friends and their pleasure-seeking lives? Her best friend is the school beauty, just coasting until her Hollywood producer father creates a reality show for her to star in. Her boyfriend is not so much a caring lover as he is someone to hook up with at parties. Her parents are well-meaning, but have problems of their own; when her father quits his job to return to his first love, playwrighting, it creates tension at home. Only Sid, an aspiring musician who is just barely cool enough to hang with Libby's gang, seems to think there is more to Libby than the social queen bee who comes up with "Wear Pencils on Your Clothes" day.
Feeling increasing out of sorts with her life, Libby finds herself signing up for an internship at the Los Angeles Zoo. Her friends pressure her to give it up because it means she will be less available for parties and hanging out, but Libby sticks to her whim. She is assigned to a group that includes Tina, a Little Person who also goes to her private high school, and Sheldon, a science geek with bad skin. At first Libby treats her teammates with disdain. But before too long, Libby discovers that she enjoys her work at the zoo, and comes to appreciate Tina and Sheldon - while seeing her old friends with a sharper, clearer eye.
As The Queen of Cool, Libby doesn't care about anyone or anything except herself. But the Intern Libby is learning to appreciate passion and the people who have it. Her two worlds can't remain separate for long, and Libby is faced with a choice: lose her social status or lose her internship. Will Libby appreciate her newly acquired sense of worth enough to make the right decision?
While THE QUEEN OF COOL is a slim book, the impact of Libby's story lingers. Author Castellucci is never preachy or condescending. Libby is a three-dimensional character who feels aching real. Highly recommended.
Wonderful Book!.......2006-06-30
Libby Brin is like all of us. She is sometimes funny, sometimes selfish, sometimes cool, and sometimes wonders what cool is--and if it's worth it. I cringed at some of her choices, and was amazed at how believable her change was. She didn't change in a minute or a day, but bit by bit, and line by line. She's not perfect at the end, but she has learned something. I did, too, by reading this wonderful book.
Read Queen of Cool, and the Queen will be YOU.......2006-06-29
Dudes, this is a great book. It's a book that makes you want to be a better person--while at the same time making your snicker and sniffle and giggle. This Cecil chick knows how to write!!!
It also makes you want better toes. Or at least better toe art. Are there crown decals at my local Rite-Aid? No, there are not! I WANT CROWN DECALS FOR MY TOES!!!! :)

Book Description
This volume is dedicated to the memory of the late Charles J. Pedersen in recognition of his outstanding contribution to scientific research, culminating in his discovery of crown ethers and their remarkable cation complexing properties and his receipt of the 1987 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
The field of macrocyclic chemistry, to a large degree, had its beginnings with Professor Pedersen's discovery. A first-person account of this discovery is given as the first paper in this volume. The growth of the field since the first publication on the subject in 1967 has been enormous. Charles Pedersen lived to see much of this growth. He saw many of his own predictions of possible uses of crown ethers and related macrocycles realized. His work illustrates how one individual can make an enormous difference in science.
The effect of his life and work on those who contributed papers for this volume and on many others is appreciated and is acknowledged by several of the authors in their individual papers.

Considered the best mystery novel ever written by many readers, And Then There Were None is the story of 10 strangers, each lured to Indian Island by a mysterious host. Once his guests have arrived, the host accuses each person of murder. Unable to leave the island, the guests begin to share their darkest secrets--until they begin to die.
Book Description
First, there were ten--a curious assortment of strangers summoned as weekend guests to a private island off the coast of Devon. Their host, an eccentric millionaire unknown to all of them, is nowhere to be found. All that the guests have in common is a wicked past they're unwilling to reveal--and a secret that will seal their fate. For each has been marked for murder. One by one they fall prey. Before the weekend is out, there will be none. And only the dead are above suspicion.AUTHORBIO: Agatha Christie is the world's best-known mystery writer. Her books have sold over a billion copies in the English language and another billion in 44 foreign languages. She is the most widely published author of all time in any language, outsold only by the Bible and Shakespeare. Her writing career spanned more than half a century, during which she wrote 80 novels and short story collections, as well as 14 plays, one of which, The Mousetrap, is the longest-running play in history. Two of the characters she created, the brilliant little Belgian Hercule Poirot and the irrepressible and relentless Miss Marple, went on to become world-famous detectives. Both have been widely dramatized in feature films and made-for-TV movies. Agatha Christie also wrote romantic novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. As well, she wrote four non-fiction books including an autobiography and an entertaining account of the many expeditions she shared with her archaeologist husband, Sir Max Mallowan. Agatha Christie died in 1976.

"
The world's best-selling mystery with over 100 million copies sold! Ten people, each with something to hide and something to fear, are invited to a lonely mansion on Indian Island by a host who, surprisingly, fails to appear. On the island they are cut off from everything but each other and the inescapable shadows of their own past lives. One by one, the guests share the darkest secrets of their wicked pasts. And one by one, they die. The Spectator (London): 'Agatha Christie's masterpiece.' The New York Times: 'The whole thing is utterly impossible and utterly fascinating. It is the most baffling mystery Agatha Christie has ever written.'

Customer Reviews:
Good quick read.......2007-10-06
A very simple and easy read, but still suspenseful. Its interesting to see how the little indian poem will come to life killing off each character. A good twist at the end.
Very Suspenseful!.......2007-09-27
This story by Agatha Christie is very, very suspenseful. It is also creepy. It does not have a detective, which seemed strange at first, because I am used to following Poirot and Miss Marple as they solve the crimes. I did not really like any of the characters but I was still surprised when each one was killed. When one of the murders took place, pretty much any one of the survivors could have been the killer. Also, you get to read what each of the characters are thinking; the story is not just from one character's viewpoint. Is the killer one of the ten guests on the island, or is there a hidden person? The ending really got me. Of course, you finally end up with only two characters and one of them turns out to be the killer, but he doesn't stop there! You'll have to read the story yourself to find out what happens at the very end. (this review is by M.Charette)
Her Best, And The Finest Whodunit I've Read.......2007-09-24
I don't see how anyone who relishes a quality 'whodunit' could fail to love this book (even though a few Amazon reviews below show that it is the case). I am familiar with quite a number of Agatha Christies (including classics like Roger Ackroyd & Orient Express, etc.), and this one clearly takes the prize. Everything about it is delicious: the inescapable island setting, the strange circumstances, the unfolding pattern, and the overall feeling of a growing and inevitable horror. Most excellent of all is the plot, which is brilliantly conceived and executed. And at the end of the day, the author has played fair (I'll make one complaint below). What more do you want?!
There are only two (mostly minor) criticisms I would make. IMO, the first keeps this story from being the perfect murder mystery. Namely, there is an early scene in which the killer THINKS a deceptive thought (I won't type it here and ruin the story for any prospective reader), and the reader reads it. This is an unfair slip on Agatha's part. Sure enough the murderer might indeed SPEAK such a deceptive sentence, but to have him/her THINK it silently (and then have the reader simply read it at face value) -- I felt this was stretching credibility too far. For a perfectionist like me, it is a pity that it's in the text, and if only it could be excised! Secondly (and AC probably had no control over this), I prefer the British title of the book - Ten Little Indians - over the American and more popular one, which sort of anticipates and gives away too much (albeit subtly). Admittedly not a huge issue, just a quibble.
At any rate, mystery lovers you're in for a treat. Enjoy and savor the Grand Dame at her finest!
Simply Brilliant, Brilliantly Complicated.......2007-08-12
And Then There Were None, the brilliant masterwork by the much imitated Agatha Christie is a complicated yet accessible murder mystery. Ten guests arrive at an island, each with a different secret, and each uniquely mysterious. When all the guests have gathered, a mysterious voice, U.N. Owen??? indicts each for a crime. The bloodletting follows. Good luck solving this mystery. The Denouement is nothing short of brilliant.
Required reading for Mystery fans. A 5 star classic!
fun read.......2007-08-03
I read this after playing the PC game so the end was blown for me but still a fun story, I would recommend reading this book and then playing the game. (don't think the game ends the same way the book does)
Book Description
Agatha Christie's most popular and best-selling whodunit in print and audio, And Then There Were None, was rated tenth by the Mystery Writers of America Top 100 Mystery Novels of All Time. Ten people arrive on Indian Island off England's southwest coast, lured to a mansion by invitations from a mysterious host. As one guest after another is murdered, terror mounts in Christie's most popular work, an elaboration of the famous children's rhyme "Ten Little Indians."

Hugh Fraser does an excellent job with his narration of this novel. He captures the mood and angst perfectly, and does a great job with the various characters.
A Masterpiece of Story Telling!.......2007-06-20
"And Then There Were None" is one of the best audio books I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Hugh Fraser gives what can only be described as a masterful performance. His reading is sumptuous, scary, and above all, intelligent. The story moves briskly and chillingly toward the shocking conclusion. Even if you have already read the book (as I have), Fraser's telling must be heard to be believed. This is the rare audio book that you cannot turn off. I highly recommend!!
Book Description
Then There Were None, by award-winning Honolulu writer and artist Martha H. Noyes, is a personal and emotional account, in words and pictures, of the effect of Western contact on the Hawaiian population. Drawing from a variety of sources, Noyes chronicles the effects, from the arrival of Capt. Cook to the present, of disease, written language, the missionaries, landownership, the overthrow of the monarchy, and the suppression of hula and Hawaiian language, concluding with a look at present-day activism. Photographs vividly contrast tourist images with scenes from the real Hawai`i and highlight the contrast between a culture rooted in cosmology and the material culture of those who made Hawai`i their own.
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding Photo Album for the Hawaiian Voice.......2007-08-01
*****
This small book is a beautiful gift book for those readers who have an interest in Hawaiian history and the Hawaiian people. On the left side of each page is a beautiful black-and-white photo, and on the right side a narrative, a quote, or poem that attempts to tell the story of the wounds of the people of Hawaii---a people who were robbed of their land and their culture---tragically.
The book does not attempt to be unbiased, but purports to put forth a point of view that has not typically been heard in the past---that of a people that were disenfranchised of so much, and the effect it had upon them.
This book is unofficially a companion to the DVD by Dr. Elizabeth Kapuuwailani Lindsey, by the same title, which tells a similar story via video rather than photographs and writing. Both the book and the DVD can stand alone, however, and each are different. The similarily is that both tell the story of the Hawaiians. The author of this book, Martha K. Noyes, was the producer and writer of the DVD as well.
The choice of photographs for this book is wonderful. I highly recommend it to all those who love Hawaii.

Very nice little book. Tells the truth regarding the overthrow. Would be very easy for children to read and understand. Beautiful old pictures
Great start about the Hawaiian people and what happened to them.......2006-04-17
I appreciate Martha H. Noyes efforts in retelling the story of what happened to the indigenous Polynesian people of the Hawaiian Islands. She has depicted much of what happened to my ancestors and their people. Mahalo nui loa! I do, however, agree with Mr. Llora that there is indeed blame being held, and as usual it is all about "Europeans, Americans and Whites". The Hawaiian people, like many indigenous peoples around the world, especially many of the Pacific Islanders, were isolated from the diseases, illnesses and sickness that people of Europe and Asia had. Certainly because of the exploration primarily and firstly by Europeans, whether British, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian or French, the first contacts were with Europeans and therefore the first diseases, venereal (from Tahiti), smallpox and influenza, that decimated Pacific Islanders, like the Hawaiians, were of European origin. However, as time went by and the Hawaiian people established a constitutional monarchy, guiding their way into the modern world as an independent, soveriegn nation and Euro-Polynesian country, a few "White Americans" illegally stole the country of Hawai'i. These elite non-Hawaiians then imported massive waves of foreigners, unabated and without a care in the world to the impact upon the Hawaiian people, primarly from Asia, especially Japan and China, but also from Portugal, with a few from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Austria and Prussia, who also carried with them their illnesses, diseases and sicknesses of which the already decimated Hawaiian people had no immunity to. The Hawaiians were further killed off by tuberculosis, influenza, Hansens Disease (from China), colds, fevers, smallpox (from San Francisco's Chinatown) and measles. Today, the descendants of the imported foreigners have outpopulated and supplanted the Hawaiian people and their descendants. In this world of warped political correctness, the facts, truth and authenticity of history and people are in danger of disappearing. As a hapa (of mixed blood), a hapa Hawai'i (part Hawaiian), as well as Chinese, Native American, European, English and British ancestry, I am tired of the same "facts of blame" being leveled at only one type of people as if "skincolor" or "race" is synonymous with "disease carrier" as in reference to the Hawaiian people, my people, my ancestors, my kupuna in my 'aina hanau of the Hawaiian Islands. It doesn't matter where the foreigners to Hawai'i's shores were from, they were human beings who brought disease that impacted the Hawaiian people, regardless of "race", "skincolor", ethnicity, nationality or origins. The fact remains that the Hawaiian people were devastated and decimated, and never had the chance nor opportunity to bring their country into the modern world.
Noyes' tragic narrative is full of contradications.......2005-07-18
Martha Noyes' 'Then There Were None' is a tragic tale of genocide -- a narrative full of contradication. On the one hand she says 'There is no blame, no guilt' (vii). Yet, on the other hand, she identifies reasons for the genocide of the 'pure' Hawaiians from an estimated 1,000,000 in 1778 (11) to 24,000 Hawaiians in 1922 (79).
She begins with the Cook and Vancouver visits in 1778 and their legacy of disease (9). Then, Noyes' continues with a series of moves by white foreigners whose clear agenda is domination and takeover. My point is simply that Noyes places the blame squarely on foreign elements. As a post-colonial thinker, I would be inclined to, in most cases, agree with her. However, to claim that the book does not lay blame is, in my humble opinion, a contradication.
Lastly, despite all the wonderful references to the 'pure' Hawaiians as well as the dominant white incursion, the book is missing one key element -- the impact of immigration of East and Southeast Asians on the local population. My sense is that Noyes does not want to shift the 'blame' or water down the story by references to immigrants and settlers. Noyes is an unapologetic romantic and that is all good. In a world full of that almost unmeasureable 'thing' out there called 'power' one cannot help but be sucked in to the discourse of master/slave even if through the destabilizing force of subversion. However, in this same reality one needs to measure the efficacy of such attempts and weigh the possible beneficial results of such actions -- as did George Helm (95) and see where that got him (97).
Kudos to Noyes for keeping the faith of King Kamehameha and Queen Lili'uokalani. Moreover, thumbs way up for Noyes' de-ornamentalism of the Hawaiian construction by the West. If for these two reasons alone, the book is well worth the read.
