Book Description

A renowned artist, author, and naturalist, David M. Carroll is exceptionally skilled at capturing nature on the page. In Self-Portrait with Turtles, he reflects on his own life, recounting the crucial moments that shaped his passions and abilities. Beginning with his first sighting of a wild turtle at age eight, Carroll describes his lifelong fascination with swamps and the creatures that inhabit them. He also traces his evolution as an artist, from the words of encouragement he received in high school to his college days in Boston to his life with his wife and family. Self-Portrait with Turtles is a remarkable memoir, a marvelous and exhilarating account of a life well lived.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Memoirs of the author's love affair with turtles.......2007-04-14

This book was my favorite of Carroll's works. It is so readable and interesting to read how the author traces his years early years of interest and eventual obsession with these most ellusive of creatures. I heartily recommend it. I couldn't put the book down!

5 out of 5 stars Looking for turtles, everywhere and always.......2006-08-09

It's fun to read about how some of our favorite naturalists came to the field. Men like John Muir, Aldo Leopold, and E.O. Wilson "discovered" the natural world as children exploring the habitats found in their own neighborhoods. They later went on to college for scientific study, and from that background they wrote their signature pieces. Well, that's not exactly the path that David M. Carroll took. Yes, he found his first turtle when he was eight years old, and yes, he's been captivated by them ever since. But he approaches his subject first with an artist's eye, then brings in the science, and combines both with a writing style that keeps readers interested and turning pages.

After spending nearly every free daylight hour as a youngster in the swamps and wetlands of Pennsylvania and Connecticut, David went off to study at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. There he focused on oil painting ... and also a fellow student named Laurette. After graduation, David taught art in a variety of schools in New England, always looking to weave his work with living near a natural, turtle-friendly environment. He and Laurette and their three children eventually settled in central New Hampshire, where David could teach and supply illustrations for governmental and academic scientific publications. It wasn't until a friend commented on the engaging writing style in his correspondence that he tried his hand at writing and illustrating his own books. The result was a wetland trilogy: "The Year of the Turtle," "Trout Reflections," and "Swampwalker's Journal." Certainly Carroll would consider one of the highlights of his career the moment he met Archie Carr, whose classic reference work, "Handbook of Turtles," is still found on nature center shelves today. Decades later, Carroll is still adept at finding turtles in the landscape, in spite of human intrusion and the loss of habitat. Together we can share his concern, dismay, and then surprise as he revisits the turtle troves of his past.

David Carroll knows just how much detail needs to be included in this kind of work. He doesn't bog the reader down with extraneous dates, names, and places. Of course, he augments his text with his own drawings and sketches; as usual, they are some of the most accurate and animated in the genre. Here he has given us a heart-warming memoir, making us wish we had turtle stories of our own.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous writing that you wish wouldn't end.......2006-02-05

A must read, whether you are a turtle lover or just appreciate brilliant writing. A wonderful surprise ending to one of the most beautifully written books imaginable. Let's hope we see a lot more books from David Carroll in the future!

5 out of 5 stars Great memoir!!.......2004-04-02

I had never heard of David Carroll until I spotted this book by accident at a local bookstore, bought it, read it, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Carroll is obsessed with turtles and writes about his lifelong pursuit of his passion with luminous prose.

Highly recommended.

      Book Description

Adrian Mole faces the same agonies which life sets before most adolescents: troubles with girls, school, parents, and an uncaring world. The difference, though, between young Master Mole and his peers is that this British lad keeps a diary -- an earnest chronicle of longing and disaster that has convulsed more than five million readers since its two-volume initial publication. From teenaged Adrian's obsession with intellectuality after understanding "nearly every word" of a Malcolm Muggeridge broadcast to his anguished adoration of a lovely, mercurial schoolmate, from his view of his parents' constantly creaking relationship to his heartfelt but hilarious attempts at cathartic verse, here is an outrageous triumph of deadpan, and deadly accurate, satire. ABBA, Princess Di's wedding, street punks. Monty Python, the Falklands campaign -- all the cultural pageantry of a keenly observed era marches past the unique perspective of Sue Townsend's brilliant comic creation: A. Mole, the unforgettable lad whose self-absorption only gets funnier as his life becomes more desperate.

      5 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-01-19

This book is exceptionally good at describing the humiliating experiences that many teenagers go through. It is very funny and quirky, Sue Townsend is a spectacular writer and it is worth the price as well as looking into more Adrian Mole books.

5 out of 5 stars In the Days Before Blogging..........2006-11-20

It's 1982 : Margaret Thatcher is Prime-Minister and Britain is at war with Argentina over a couple of sheep-infested islands in the South Atlantic. Meanwhile, the second instalment of the Mole Diaries is being written by a spotty, fifteen year old intellectual from Leicester.

Adrian proves to be a slightly different character in this book - I suppose he's actually grown up a little. He still has a pretentious streak, he continues to be a touch insensitive at times, he doesn't always see the blindingly obvious and he still (mistakenly) sees himself as an intellectual. However, sometimes, he gets the point all too well and delivers a well-penned (not to mention a well-deserved) kick in the arse. "The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole" covers a traumatic period for Adrian : his O-Levels and CSEs are looming while the significant fallout from his parents affairs have to be dealt with. He's still in love with Pandora, though the path of true love has a few tumbles in store for our spotty Lothario. (He's very keen to see a bit more loving, though he'd happily settle for a glimpse of nipple. Pandora, on the other hand, isn't in quite such a rush). The young couple still help Bert Baxter (a war veteran in his eighties) and Queenie (Bert's recently acquired second wife). Despite Bert's hobbies - drinking, smoking and communism - Bert appears to be one of the closest friends Adrian has. Adrian still has the problem of Barry Kent, the school bully : however, some very surprising progress is made over the course of the year.

Starting in April 1982 and finishing in May 1983, some of the big news stories at the time are touched on - the arrival of breakfast television in the UK, the kidnapping of Shergar and the Falklands War, Overall, it does prove to be a very funny book - though there are a couple of sad moments and a few serious points made. Depressingly, some of the points Adrian makes are just as relevant today as they were over twenty years ago. Listening to Radio Four at one point, Adrian notes that the government has decided to spend a billion pounds on war equipment. He then mentions that one of his school's science laboratories is being closed down because it can't afford to employ a new teacher. (Blair is throwing money at the Iraq War having conveniently forgotten al about "education, education, education"). Then Adrian's Irish neighbour, Mr O'Leary, returns to Ireland to vote in the Irish General Election. On his way back to Leicester, however, Mr O'Leary is detained at the East Midlands Airport on being suspicion of being a terrorist. (Admittedly, today the focus has shifted a different group). Later, when a General Election is called in the UK, one of the candidates mentioned is Duncan McIntosh. A member of the "Send `Em Back Where They Came From Party", Mr McIntosh advocates compulsory repatriation of people with black, brown and yellow skin, the Irish, the Welsh, the Scottish and all those with Norman blood. (With all the recent hysteria about immigrants, Mr McIntosh's party would probably have a good shout at government). Well worth reading, and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books when I was a teenager.......2006-11-19

This book was loved by my classmates and I in Malaysia. I have read it about 5 times over the years, and still laugh out loud each time! You have to read it for yourself to see why it is so well-loved. Adrian Mole is a type of teenager in each of us. Not only is this book hilarious, but the number of plots weaving simultaneously through the whole book is ingenious. Every character introduced has a purpose.

5 out of 5 stars I now understand why this series was so popular..........2006-10-24

Well, having stumbled on the last book in the series (AD and the Weapons of Mass Destruction) and thoroughly enjoying it, I just had to go back and start at the beginning of the Adrian Mole series. The Adrian Mole Diaries : The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13 3/4 : The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole by Sue Townsend is a combination volume of the two titles, and I now understand a bit more why this was apparently all the rage in England in the '80s.

It's impossible to read this without relating to at least *some* aspect of Mole's life and thought patterns. Whether it's his literary aspirations (not shared by much of anyone else), his preoccupation with Pandora (the love of his life), or all the "spots" on his face, you realize you've had the same feelings, complete with melodramatic accompaniment. Watching his parents go through separate affairs while Adrian is oblivious to what's really happening is painfully funny, and it made me wonder how much *I* was unaware of around adults growing up. This is really "reality TV" before there was such a thing...

In some ways, I wish I had read this before the last one, as I think I would have understood a lot more about his personality and background. But better late than never, and now I have some more catching up to do...

Teen angst has never been such serious business--or this much fun! In his secret diary, British teen Adrian Mole excruciatingly details every morsel of his turbulent adolescence. Mixed in with daily reports about the zit sprouting on his chin are heartrending passages about his parents' chaotic marriage. Adrian sees all, and he has something to say about everything. Delightfully self-centered, Adrian is the sort of teen who could rule a much better world--if only his crazy relatives and classmates would get out of his way. The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole is a riot, and--although written more than 15 years ago--there is something deliciously timeless about Adrian's angst.

      Book Description

Adrian Mole's first love, Pandora, has left him; a neighbor, Mr. Lucas, appears to be seducing his mother (and what does that mean for his father?); the BBC refuses to publish his poetry; and his dog swallowed the tree off the Christmas cake. "Why" indeed.

A reasonably amusing look at the life of a teenage boy, in his own hand.

To him, of course, his life can seem quite horrible, problems with those annoying girls, those annoying adults, those annoying schools, those annoying things you have to do, and all sorts of other mundane things.

The funny part is how he actually jots it down.

      4 out of 5 stars The 20th Century's Samuel Pepys.......2006-11-21

It's 1981 : Margaret Thatcher is Prime Minister, Prince Charles is preparing for his wedding to Lady Diana Spencer and nobody in England has ever heard of the Falkland Islands. Meanwhile Adrian Mole, a spotty kid from Leicester, has a new diary.

Adrian is an only child and is only a few months short of his fourteenth birthday. Somewhat pretentious, occasionally insensitive and just a little dim, he has somehow managed to convince himself that he is an intellectual. (He claims to have read "War and Peace" within 24 hours - he thought it was `quite good' - while "Animal Farm" has led him to consider being a vet when he grows up). Almost inevitably, he's started writing poetry, which he occasionally sends to the BBC. Mr and Mrs Lucas, who live next door, cause something of a scandal when they become the first couple on his street to get divorced. (In fact, he's nearly delighted with the fallout, until his own family get caught up in it). These aren't his only problems, of course - he suffers from acne, his O-Levels and CSEs are looming and he's routinely menaced by Barry Kent at school. As a member of the Good Samaritans, a charity group he's joined, he misses his maths lessons on a Monday. The downside is that he has to help out an eighty-one year old war-veteran called Bert Baxter. Bert's drinking and smoking are bad enough, but the fact that Bert reads the Morning Star has led Adrian to suspect the pensioner is actually a communist. However, it's not all doom and gloom : Adrian is in love with Pandora Braithwaite .

This is a very funny book - it's always been one of my brother's favourites and I'm sure he wouldn't be alone in viewing it a modern classic. It is written as a diary, rather than a novel - each day is presented as a journal entry, with some days being given more detail than others. While it may be a little more accessible to those who grew up in the UK and Ireland in the 1980s, it's still very funny and is hugely recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars He is 13 3/4!.......2006-08-06

This stellar piece of fiction written by fantastic author, Sue Townshend, will have you in pieces literally from the very beginning.
Adrian Mole is coping with being 13...and 3/4. His life is complicated and miserable. He swoons and has almost depressing sentiments for a girl named Pandora. This is a tale of his life.
The story is piognant and tender at times, reminiscent of people's lives when they're at this age, but nonetheless downright smashing.
I highly reccomed getting into this clever and mysterious series.
      You sure won't regret it!

      5 out of 5 stars Hilarious!!!!.......2006-03-20

      **Warning Spoilers**

Adrian Mole is a gifted 13-year-old boy living in England in the early 80s.
In this book Adrian tells the story about his "horrible" home life, his crush Pandora, his parent's split, trouble at school, his new eighty-year-old friend Bert, his acne problem, the Royal Wedding, and numerous other events. Even the most normal events turn tragic when Adrian and his family are involved.
Adrian reminds me of a Woody Allen movie. It's brilliantly funny and I recommend it to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As Bridget Jones.......2005-11-05

I love this book! I read it when I was a teenager and some of the stuff that only the English would know was a bit tough to get through but it was just so much fun, so hilarious that I read it many times. I recently re-read it and it was totally as good as I remember or better. Unfortunately, there were follow-up books and none came even close to this, the classic British Diary book.

If you thought the daily musings of Bridget Jones were funny or that her life was one giant mishap, you obviously have not met Adrian Mole! He is young, trying to get through his O Levels (whatever the heck that is) and he is in love with Pandora, the face of his w.d.'s. He also has to deal with a drunk father, a mutt who nobody cares about, a crazy old man he helps for charity and an adulterous mum.

So, get this book and be ready to wipe tears from your eyes from all your laughing.

                                                Book Description

I KNOW the Earth's Children Series and love it BUT, I've veen waiting going on 4 Years for the last two books of the series to come out. It's unfair, it's like the tv goes out on you on one of the best shows you've ever seen, and they never show it again two thirds the way through the show.

I DON'T KNOW ENGLISH. I WRITE IN SPANISH. YO HE LEIDO LOS CUATRO LIBROS DE LA SEÑORA JEAN M. AUEL Y REALMENTE SON FACINANTES. HE ESPERADO DESDE LA ÚLTIMA PUBLICACIÓN DEL LIBRO "A TRAVÉS DE LA LLANURA" (TITULO EN ESPAÑOL), POR LA CONTINUACIÓN. REALMENTE ES PARA MI UN GRAN PLACER LEER ESTA CLASE DE LIBROS, QUE A LA VEZ QUE NOS TRANSPORTA A OTRA EPOCA NOS MANEJA DE UNA MANERA GENIAL LOS VALORES AL PRINCIPIO DE LA HUMANIDAD Y QUE AUNQUE EN ESTA ÉPOCA ES ALGO QUE CADA VEZ SE VE MENOS, EN ESTE TIPO DE LIBROS SE REFRESCA Y SE REFUERZA. ME ENCANTA EL VALOR Y LA FUERZA QUE LE DA A AYLA, YA QUE LA HACE SER UN PROTOTIPO DE MUJER EXCEPCIONAL, QUE UNA QUISIERA SER. ADEMÁS DE LA SENSIBILIDAD Y LA BONDAD QUE SE SIENTE EN TODO MOMENTO QUE LA ACOMPAÑAMOS EN SU AVENTURA. JONDALAR, EXCELENTE COMPAÑERO, CON EL AFLORAN TODOS NUESTROS COMPLEJOS, INSEGURIDADES Y TEMORES. TODAS LAS REACCIONES A LAS SITUACIONES Y A LOS CONVENCIONALISMOS QUE SE MANEJAN, SON ALGO QUE PODEMOS VER INCLUSIVE HOY EN DÍA. Y EN ESTOS LIBROS NOS MUESTRA COMO EN UN ESPEJO COMO SOMOS, YA QUE NO IMPORTA EL TIEMPO SIEMPRE SERA VISTO ESTE TIPO DE REACCIONES ANTE SITUACIONES QUE AMENACEN NUESTRO LUGAR Y ESTATUS. MUCHAS GRACIAS POR ESTE ESPACIO.CUANDO PODREMOS DISFRUTAR DE LA CONTINUACIÓN DE ESTA SERIE EN ESPAÑOL? MI ADMIRACIÓN Y RESPETO A LA SEÑORA JEAN M. AUEL. ATENTAMENTE DIANA GARMA A.
