A classic example of meticulous effort; a beautiful collection .......2007-08-27
Snow Crystals by Bentley represents the exhilarating beauty and complexity of snowflakes in photographs taken with painstaking effort and enterprise. The book has a very useful introduction, though most of it is devoted to the diverse patterns exhibited by snowflakes. The quest to understand why snowflakes have their delightful shape and symmetry has intrigued the scientists, poets and philosophers for centuries. For example, in sixteenth century, Kepler's essay (On six-cornered snowflake) presents a very illuminating (and perhaps first scientific) account of his thought process on the physics of why snowflake is formed. He discussed several key ideas relevant to packing problems, and on their shapes, and the book by Bentley surely dazzles in being able to present a diverse range of possibilities realized by nature. Highly recommended to science enthusiasts, artists, photographers and atmospheric physicists.
"Snow Crystals" is a blizzard of beauty.......2005-07-21
In case you are trying to decide between "Snowflakes in Photographs" and "Snow Crystals", both by Bentley and published by Dover, this book is the better deal. Ironically, you get twice as many snowflake photos in "Snow Crystals" than in "Snowflakes in Photographs". Both beautiful books feature stunning black and white photographs of snowflakes but this book definitely has better 'text' support. I bought the two books at the same time thinking that this one focused more on Bentley and the other one focused more on the pictures, but it was a mistake. This is a case of "you get what you pay for" and the only reason to buy "Snowflakes in Photographs" over this one is that it is a bit cheaper. Buy "Snow Crystals", it is a blizzard of beauty with gorgeous photographs of snowflakes, nature's fragile crystalline miracles.
Sheer art.......2004-02-13
This book is a collection of some of W. A. Bentley's finest snowflake photographs. At the beginning of the book is a 20-page introduction to the photography and science of snowflakes (as of 1930). The photographic advice is more of value today as historical documentation about how the pictures were taken- -we no longer use photographic plates or develop and fix our own negatives. The scientific section consists mostly of descriptive and classificatory commentary, with relatively little in the way of explanation as to why the snowflakes take on the shapes that they do. Some of the commentary cites specific plates as examples. The real value of the book is in the plates themselves- -two hundred pages of high-quality black and white photographs, depicting over two thousand differently shaped snowflakes. A reader could spend many hours poring over the magical snowflakes. In looking through the plates, it becomes clear quite quickly that Bentley was a man of genius and dedication.
Sacred Geometry.......2002-08-24
I love this book because it gives me a unique feeling of spiritual unity each time I open it. It may be that you will appreciate it for different reasons, but for me, it is a graphic reminder that there is a creative and benign intelligence moving the Universe. Originally published in 1931 this unique book contains 202 black and white plates of snow flakes mounted and photographed with painstaking effort under difficult circumstances by W.A. Bentley aka Snowflake Bentley. Maybe you won't want to sit down and look at each and every one because, of course, they are nearly all the same even though each one is unique, but that's another reason I like the book. It demonstrates so simply and eloquently the unity in diversity.
The photographs are very beautiful and they will be interesting to anyone who is fascinated with weather or with graphics in art, perhaps for textile patterns or silk-screen ideas. The images are copyright free and you can use up to ten of them without fees, permission, or acknowledgement.
There is a very small amount of text at the beginning of this book that tells about the different kinds of snow crystals and a little bit about how the work to capture them on film was done. There is one nice photograph of Bentley at his camera which is charming, but for the most part, this book is dedicated to the snow crystals themselves. Anyone who has stood outside on a cold, crisp snowy day and caught snow crsytals on an upturned mitten and marveled at their exquisite beauty will enjoy this book. The crystals speak volumes and we have Mr. Bentley to thank for cummunicating their message to us.
A beautiful collection of photographs.......2001-01-05
W.A. Bentley spent fifty years painstakingly recording snowflakes, frost, rime, sleet and ice in all its forms. Even before "Snow Crystals" was published in 1931, his work was well known, and so popular that eventually a donor provided the (apparently large) amount of money needed to assemble this beautiful collection.
There is a small amount of text at the front of the book, which is moderately interesting. It contains a description of how to take these pictures for yourself, if you'd like to; and a classification of the kinds of snowflake and other ice forms depicted here. The bulk of the book, however, is made up of well over two thousand black and white photographs, the vast majority of them of single snowflakes. You can get an idea of what they look like by clicking on Amazon's image of the cover picture, above; in the book, the images are white on black. You may also want to visit snowflakebentley.com, which contains more examples, and more information about Bentley himself (there is almost none in this book). In most or all cases, Bentley went to the trouble of making a duplicate negative of each snowflake and then cutting out, by hand, the finely detailed image, so that the background to the picture would be pure black.
The results are spectacular. The snowflakes are ethereally beautiful, and the variety is just stunning. However, in case it's not clear from what I've said so far, this is a contemplative book. It's not a book to read: it's a book to browse through, put away, and get out again another snowy day. Children will like it, but just to glance at, not to go through steadily.
Recommended.

A Close Look at Snow and Snowflakes.......2003-07-30
While working on avalanche research in the 1950's, Edward Chapelle discovered that the variation in snow crystal forms influences the occurrence of avalanches. This discovery led him to write this "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" to explain the basics of snow crystal identification and metamorphism to interested laypersons. In this case, "snow crystal" includes what is commonly called a "snowflake". So if you are interested in understanding snowflakes, this book is for you. The field guide has three parts. The first section addresses the identification of snow crystals. There are charts which allow the reader to identify any snow crystal (or snowflake) that he finds. And there is an explanation of how and why snow crystals form. The second part of the book explains how to photograph a snow crystal, which might be of interest to photographers specializing in close-up work as well as snowflake enthusiasts. The third and final section of the book contains 50 photographs of snow crystals, which illustrate discussions of what happens to snow as it falls and as it sits on the ground under various conditions. The metamorphism which causes snow crystals to alter their form as they lie on or under the surface of snow is both pictured and described in detail. The differences between snow, hoar, and rime are also pictured and described so that the reader can easily differentiate between them. I have only a casual interest in snowflakes, and I enjoyed this book. It made me think about the variety of forms I have seen snow take, and now I understand what I was looking at. My only criticism of this "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" is that it lacks a glossary of terms. New terms are explained as they arise, but a glossary in the back of the book would have been a helpful quick reference. I would recommend the "Field Guide to Snow Crystals" to skiers, mountain climbers, snow rangers, and anyone who has an interest in better understanding snow or snowflakes. The book is 6x8 inches in size and 101 pages long.

Book Description
Macabre and morbid city offerings and various vile movie locations are explored in hair-raising detail in this entertaining travel guide. The names and addresses of assorted people, places, and things associated with the horror genre—such as the real-life Baltimore haunts of Edgar Allan Poe, the final resting place of Bela Lugosi, and Stephen King's Maine—are coupled with trivia, travel tips, photographs, and a ghoulishly fun narrative, making this a creepily informative alternative to traditional guidebooks. The old haunts of cult classics such as Dawn of the Dead, The Exorcist, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are also discussed.
Customer Reviews:
Not just for horror fans!.......2007-08-01
Creepy Crawls is one of the most unique and fun travel books I've had the pleasure to read! Not just for horror fans, anyone who has ever wondered about the dark, secret places in the world, just beyond the shiny veneer of well-travelled places, will love this informative book. There is much more to the textbook history and tourist approved places of any given city, country or culture-- read Creepy Crawls and see what some of them are. I highly disagree with a couple previous reviewers who did not like Leon Marcelo's word choice. The language of the book makes an interesting topic even more entertaining to read. It reflects the tone and feel of the places and the spirit in which the book was written. This book is a personal, hair-raising guide to curious, unforgettable places for any traveller who is wearied by shallow tourism. A great gift that can please a wide range of people: history buffs, horror fans, travel lovers (experienced or not), supernatural seekers, collectors of the wonderfully weird and many more. Creepy Crawls will take you beyond the pale!
Inspirational for Writers and Horror Fans.......2007-07-17
Creepy Crawls is an inspirational book for both aspiring writers and horror movie fanboys. Originally published as a series of articles in various top notch horror magazines, collecting all of the travel log entries and locales into one place spares everyone the trouble of searching through back issues. Most importantly, Mr. Marcelo did something that a lot of fans never do: he actually did something with his fandom and wrote a book about his interests and experiences. The detail of his book indeed does come from a lifetime of traveling and indulging in his dark delights, to copy Mr. Marcelo's Crypt Keeper style of writing. I'm hoping that others follow in his footsteps and learn to take their passion and indulgences and turn them into something we all can enjoy and learn from.
Amusing and dissapointing all in one binding.......2007-07-10
Well I have to say the writer's cheeky style of writing reminded me of a wanna be elvira.. except the writer had abused a thesuraus to make this tome. I purchased this book hoping to see good photography of these sites. If you are seeking alot of decent photographs, i suggest looking them up on the internet, you will not find them here save but a few. I am an artist, and as such really purchased this to get some reference material. In that department it was lacking. The writer gave much information about the sites, and the visiting and i can not fault him there, i just wish he didnt try to come off as a mister and mrs of the dark in every sentence in this travel log.
hmm what am i listening to right now? Misfits - Skulls
yours crue.. oh god the writer has me typing it now. ;)
buy this is you want a travel log of these horror sites written in a very cheesy horror esque manner ( its like plan 9 from outer space meets the typerwriter!), if you want reference on these sites , seek other sources.
Great Info.......2007-04-10
Very cool book! Finally a book is out there that has info like this, so a sicko like me can go to my favorite film locations and check them out for myself, without having to go to a bunch of different web sites. It's obvious this guy spent a lot of time and money creating this work. Great job!
Overall a very interesting book.......2007-01-21
This book is filled with good tips and interesting facts about favorite horror movie and generally creepy sites. The style of writing can be a little much at times, but doesn't diminish the overall quality of the book. I definitely recommend it to any horror movie fan.

Look a little deeper. Don't be shallow........2007-01-05
No Promises in the Wind follows Josh (15) and Joey (10) Grondowski as they venture from their family in Chicago with their teenage friend Howie during the Great Depression. This realistic, and historical-fiction novel shows the turbulence of the 1930's - the starvation, unemployment, hopping trains. Devastation strikes as early as chapter two, keeping you intrigued.
Some say this book is boring, but they're being shallow. This book was written exceptionally well, with an upper-reading level.
This book has everything a teenage novel should have-a little action, a fifteen year-old boy who has a good character with some depth, a little romance, and an adventure.
Judge it for yourself, if nothing else you'll learn a little about the Great Depression and "a boy with the solemn name of Josh Grondowski".

No Promises In The Wind
By
Irena Hunt
If you're one of those people that can't go a week with out your parents, stop reading. This book is more for people that like staying away from their parents. This story is about two brothers living in the great depression and these young, strong, and intelligent boy run away from home, to escape the yelling from there dad, working early in the morning, and going to sleep hunger. Josh (the oldest brother) quickly learned that he would have to grow up quickly in order to live in the great depression. Josh and Joey (the youngest brother) would have to work just like an adult making very little money, for hard work. The jobs they encounter are a paper route and the circus. Personally I don't like reading books but this book was great! I recommend this book for thirteen and up. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did! If you want to find out more read No Promises In The Wind.
No Promises in the Wind.......2006-10-31
Imagine growing up in the early 1930'ssinthemidst of the depression. Unfortunately for Josh Joey and Howie is a reality in Irene Hunt's No Promises in the Wind. Josh and his best friend Howie along with Josh's little brother Joey set out to make their own way in the world. These boys encounter an untimely death, some less than welcoming people, a fatherly truck driver, a second rate circus and a boastful gangster. Josh is a fifteen-year-old piano player with a sober attitude and big dreams. Howie is Josh's best friend who is also fifteen and a great banjo player. Joey is Josh's optimistic ten-year-old brother. This book was written by Irene Hunt and is not part of a series. It's main theme is responsibility. This book is a realistic fiction/historical fiction genre. I would recommend this book to anyone age ten and up. Though it is more geared towards boys it can be enjoyed by girls as well. I would also recommend this book to any one who is interested in the early 1930's. This is a great book and it teaches you alot about the "wild boy's of the road."
No Promises in the Wind.......2006-10-31
Two brothers Josh and Joey set off on their own because their father yells at Josh for asking for another potato for dinner and Josh becomes angry and he leaves. But Joey, even though Josh would have left by himself, comes with him in hope he can help his brother. They soon find however, that living on their own is not what it seems. I think this book is good if you like a somewhat dark story with a twist at the end. It is also good because of all the adventures they have on the way.
With the boys comes Josh's friend Howie. Howie is a very good musician like Josh, and they make music at their high school. Along their way, they get on a train, where a horrible accident changes their views, luck, and Josh's life. They meet many homeless people, chumps, gangsters, and even a friendly trucker that becomes their makeshift father. All in all this is a good book, but if you dislike books that are somewhat tedious, you may not enjoy this book.
No Promises In the Wind Book Review.......2006-10-28
If you didn't have food and couldn't get along with your family, would you leave your home? I would, and that's just what Joey, Josh, and Howie do in Irene Hunt's book of epic proportions.
In this book, Joey, Howie, and Josh leave their homes for a place with food and jobs. But Howie gets into an accident, so Josh and Joey get food and shelter from kind people by themselves. Then, while on the road, they meet a nice man named Lonnie. He takes them to get a job at the fair. But then the fair burns down, so they go and find a shed. They get into a fight, and Josh slaps Joey. Joey leaves, so many more tragedies happen, and after all that, the boys reunite.
This book is all it's own, and it's by Irene Hunt. It's very exciting, emotional, and sad, but also happy. It takes place in 1932, is non-fiction, is an adventure book, and the theme is that you should never give up, for you will most likely be okay in the end. The boys in this book sure are brave, have had a very hard life, and this book explains what it was like to live in 1932.
I recommend this book for ages 10+, for girls and boys, and not for younger children. It is non-fiction, always keeps you on your seat, and is a great book.
As you can see, No Promises In the Wind is a very exciting, adventurous book, and it is for many age groups. It is a very emotional book, so it should be read with caution. Sometimes, it also seems kind of boring, but in fact isn't, so keep reading!

Book Description
This book is unique in the way microbiology is presented. As some of the simplest organisms, bacteria have a close connection to physics and chemistry. Throughout the book an appreciation of how these organisms solve their problems is given. They do so in a way that is adequate but less dependent on the evolution of very sophisticated biological tools that are so prominent in the biology of eukaryotic plants and animals. This simplicity is a consequence of the fact that the Domain of Bacteria separated from the evolutionary tree earlier than the other two Domains. Early parts of the book are devoted to evolutionary processes and mathematics for the study of bacteria growth. Also presented are the physics of osmotic pressure, surface tension, and relevant aspects of biochemistry.
Since this book presents a novel approach to microbiology, it will be appropriate for all microbiologists and students. Even though it is written so that a prior knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and microbiology is not needed, it will be read, studied, and thought about by people with a more physical background.

Book Description
The term `functional gradient materials' was coined in Japan in the 1980s to describe a class of materials having spatially homogenous microstructures and properties. These materials can be used successfully in such applications as electronic devices, optical films, anti-wear and anti-corrosion coatings, thermal barrier coatings and biomaterials. The materials are fabricated with the use of nanoparticles, leading to greatly improved performance. Nanoparticle technology is not straightforward, however, demanding a modification of methods for processing and characterization.
This book provides graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, engineers and senior scientists with an in-depth review of aspects of the field, ranging from synthetic methods to a variety of applications. The different approaches to material synthesis are described, giving the reader a better understanding of the complex phenomena involved. Characterization and the evaluation of properties are also discussed.

Conjures up Images that Stay with You.......2006-03-02
His prose is excellent, but his poetry (the black riders / war is kind) is what stays with me. The striking images, dark humor and subversive fight against authority bring me back to the book decade after decade. These aren't Shakespearean sonnets; if he was born a hundred years later he would be channeling his raw feelings into writing lyrics for Rage Against the Machine. His poetry seems so modern it is hard to reconcile it with the completely different feel of The Red Badge of Courage and his splendid Spanish American War reporting.
The great American war novel plus .......2005-11-16
This volume contains all of Crane's major writings. I believe it is fair to say that it is 'The Red Badge of Courage' that gives Crane his place in the American pantheon. This is arguably the finest war novel ever written by an American. Its imaginative construction of the inner conflict of a young dreamer when confronted with the reality of battle-and the redemptive aftermath is a tautly and beautifully written realistic , moral drama. Its perception of the part imagination plays in our apprehension of reality connects it with a long tradition of the novel from 'Quixote' to ' Lord Jim'.
Crane like Keats was a literary fire that burned briefly but deeply and intensely.
