This book was recommended by a couple professors and I am very pleased. No its not another Lawton type book, but still very handy. This book does not go into great depth about cell type/size/arrangement like Lawton, but it does have some great illustrations. Again great book that could easily be used in the field with a hand lens.

This is a non-fiction account of a labourer named Gordon Butcher that uncovered a large quantity of Roman treasure in a field that he was ploughing for a farmer named only as Ford.

Lucky Break

This is a non-fictional account, form. It discusses the events in his life that lead him to becoming a writer.

A Piece of Cake

This is an autobiographical account of Dahl's time as a fighter pilot in World War II.

Outstanding.......2007-05-13

Funny, creative, suprising. These witty, clever stories will keep you on your toes. A fairly easy read, this is a must have by Dahl.

Short Stories for Young and Old.......2007-02-27

Roland Dahl is best known for his children's work, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "The Witches", "James and the Giant Peach", etc. But you may not know that Dahl was first and perhaps foremost a short story writer. A collection of some of his work is found in (if you couldn't tell by the title) "The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More".
The books contains six short stories and one novella. They are as follows:

"The Boy Who Talked to Animals": Very much a children's story about a family on vacation in the Caribbean who comes across a snared giant tortoise, caught be the locals for an expensive hotel. The boy forms a connection with the aged reptile and silently vows to protect it.

"The Hitchhiker': This might be the most fun of all the reads in the book as a writer (Dahl?) in a fancy sports car picks up a hitchhiker who has a very interesting profession. Kids should love this one.

"The Mildenhall Treasure": A hired plower finds a hidden Roman treasure under his plow sheer on a cold winter day and makes the mistake of telling his boss. This tale in one of three non-fiction pieces in this collection and may be a bit dry for younger readers.

"The Swan": Two young hooligans go on a rampage killing every animal they see with a new gun, that is until they have the opportunity to torment a smaller boy. This is a wonderful, but sad short story for children and adults.

"The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar": A story within a story about a bored gentleman of privilege who discovers a way to cheats at cards. This one is more a novella than a short story, but is great for both kids and adults alike.

"Lucky Break': The second non-fiction piece is all about Dahl's accidental push into writing. The story moves quickly and is interesting, but it the lacks the detail of his non-fiction fare.

"A Piece of Cake": Dahl's third non-fiction entry and sadly his worst. "Cake" tells the story of Dahl's own experience as a pilot being shot down during WWII. It was Dahl's first short story ever and it shows. Most kids might be put off by this one.

All in all in solid collection of work, you can even forgive "A Piece of Cake" since it applies so heavily to "A Lucky Break". Most of the stories here are perfect for bed side reading. It's also a great opportunity to learn more about Dahl, as several of the stories deal directly with his own life, a rarity in his work.

I've read the book "The wonderful story of Henry Sugar and six more". It's a book containing seven short stories. The longest one is the story about a wonderful person called Henry Sugar, an egoist who whants to change his life and become more like Robin Hood. But in my opinion, the best one is, "The Swan", a great story about a kid who whants to survie from two big persons of the same age. You just can't stop reading it. The whole book was ok, but some stories were very boring, others were supricenly good. I'll give the book 3 out of 5, because the book was ok. Personally, I don't like shortstories. I prefer reading novels.

Every single person must read The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The story is a clever mix of fact and fiction. The other stories in the book are okay. Not my cup of tea... but could be yours. Story of Henry sugar is well written, you can't put it down. A must read for everyone of all ages. Truly one of the great ones.

John Hanson Mitchell obviously, truly loves this subject (as well as his land). He lovingly explores all parts of a small plot of land & the myriad creatures that live & interact there to create a whole ecosystem. He pulls together all the parts in a very entertaining & readable field guide to observing nature.
