5 out of 5 stars A Definitive Work.......2000-05-10

This book is a must have for any library on Appalachia or the Great Smoky Mountains. Michael Frome does an admirable job balancing sensitivity for the mountain people, their customs, attitudes, and anomalies with historical research and insightful commentary about the creation of the Park and its future. Being a native of the region, from a long line of Appalachian families, I felt that I understood my home more after reading this book than I ever would have otherwise. With equal nods to conservationists and tourists alike, this book will educate, entertain, and enlighten anyone who cares about this most beautiful and mysterious of regions. Additionally, Frome implores the reader to know the Park intimately, to abandon the car and strike out on foot, to rejoice fully with Mother Nature in Her playground. The addition of Strangers In High Places to your collection will be one of the best decisions to be made.

5 out of 5 stars History, traditions, and culture of the Smokies........1998-10-17

This book is a must for all who love the Smoky Mountains. In it you meet those players who made this magical place what it is today, including the wind and rain, early pioneers and geologists, loggers, whisky distillers, woodsmen and rangers. If you want to get beyond the slide shows and park brochures, read this book and learn what the Smokies are really all about.

I was born in San Francisco, and I still live in the Bay Area. This guidebook is the best I've ever found for the Bay Area -- I always check them out because I like to have a good guidebook available in our guest room. If you live near San Francisco, you get lots of houseguests! This guidebook is so good that my husband and I use it to explore our own surroundings. Written with candor and freshness by Carole Terwilliger Meyers, it's fun to read, full of useful info -- just delightful and invaluable. We rely on it. If you're looking to visit the SF Bay Area, this is the best book for your money. Trust me, I've lived here for decades. The next best thing to having a longtime native show you around.

5 out of 5 stars Zoey 's back in her fifth book!.......2007-07-31

Zoey Dean is back in her fifth installment in the A- List Series. In this novel the A-listers go to Las Vegas as their end of the year senior trip, instead of Washington D.C. There everyone is having a fun time. Cammie and Adam are going good, Anna tries to reach Ben, but he never answers his phone. Sam is obsessing over Eduardo and Dee is going crazy of judaism and Ruby Hummingbird, Sam's stepsister. In Las Vegas everyone goes to a hypnosist show, where some of them reveal some deep secrets, which are later forgiven, and their vacation ends short when Dee is taken to a physciatric hospital after going crazy over Ruby and Poppy. While leaving Anna see's Ben and they both stay at the hotel. Zoey Dean's fifth was great. In fact this series has been really fun and interesting and I would definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars It is a good book.......2007-01-02

I gave this book 5 stars because the storyline was great and the characters were very interesting. Every chapter that I read was leading up to the main reason of the story and that is what I like in reading a book. I wouldn't like to read about the present time and then the next page be a flashback. That is just too confusing.
The characters were very interesting. The character I liked most was Anna because she was most down-to-earth person than any other character in my opinion. The author did a very good job with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story Line.......2006-11-09

I this book is pretty good because it's different than some of the different ones in the series. I like the fact that Anna is going to Las Vegas even though she wouldn't normaly choose to go there. For some reason I don't feel that Cammie really deserves Adam and in she is so mean about Anna. I don't like her but she makes the story more interesting.

5 out of 5 stars What better place for naughtyness than in Sin City??.......2006-07-20

This book was hot hot hot! The most popular A-listers at BHH are going on a trip to Sin City instead of that boring trip to Washington-Parker, Sam, Cammie, Adam, Dee and of course Ana. The six of them check in at Las Vegas' finest Palms Hotel. Cammie decides all the girls should have a catty fashion contest, but when Cammie herself doesnt come appropiately dressed things get a little wild...
Poor Parker is low on cash and is willing to do anything to get some cash fast, but what happens when his gambling reaches a dead end? On the other hand, Anna is running low on love. She seems lost and cant stop thinking about Ben, so she leaves him a voicemail inviting him to Sin City. But what happens when Cyn and Scott show up? Scott is looking amazingly hot and Cyn is unsure about their relationship, will Anna make a move?
And to top off the cake they all go to a hypnotist for fun.But is it all fun and games when they are forced to share their deepest secrets on stage??Cammie confesses something about Adam, Adam confesses something about Cammie, and Anna confesses something about Scott! Sam just lays back with her mouth wide open as she hears these deep revealing secrets. And what happens when they decide to watch the tape? Will all end well? Will there be new hook-ups or break-ups??
And the frosting on top of this cake is that who else but Ben shows up at the Palms just before they're about to leave. Fortunetly, Anna spots him and stops the limo. Unfortunetly, although they express their feelings for each other and cant wait to ravish each other, Ben has a secret- he has a girlfriend waiting for him to come back to her at Princeton. Will this newly revealed secret affect the magic between Ben and Anna?

            Book Description

Natural Attenuation: CERCLA, RBCAs, and the Future of Environmental Remediation presents the concept of "natural attenuation"-the tendency of soils to severly limit the toxicity of many types of hazardous waste. It reviews and updates the most recent findings from the field and lab and shows how natural attenuation is rapidly changing the direction and focus of environmental remediation. Outlining the legal and regulatory framework that has made waste remediation so costly, this book shows how applying an understanding of natural attenuation can decrease cleanup outlays while lowering risks to human health. Natural Attenuation: CERCLA, RBCAs, and the Future of Environmental Remediation makes it clear why natural attenuation will be relied upon more and more in the future.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable little fantasy world.......2006-09-02

I picked this up on a clearance table at B&N a few years ago, and I've pulled it off the shelf at least once every year since then to read it again. I haven't read any of the author's other works, and indeed I find Tolkien closer to my worldview than this brief tast of Ms Bradley's sub-creation. However, I greatly enjoy this little field trip into a well-detailed fantasy world. She explains just enough for someone who doesn't know all the background of her work to follow along, and makes it all seem so natural. (And the plot's pretty good, too!) If you find it at a yard sale or thrift shop, pick it up to enjoy on a rainy Saturday morning. 4.5/5

                3 out of 5 stars A bit of a disappointment.......2006-09-02

This should have been published with another story or two (there are some uncollected Lythande stories, maybe the administrators of her estate should look into a complete Lythande collection, including the Thieve's World stories). It's just a novelette - really a long short story.
As a story of Lythande, it is thin and lacks the complexity of the other stories. It was good to see Beeauty and Tashgan again. I'm glad to add it to my collection of MZB.

5 out of 5 stars A nice little treat of Marion Zimmer Bradley!.......2004-03-28

Being a huge MZB fan and a lover of her "Mists of Avalon" series, I bought this lovely little book simply because it was Marion Zimmer Bradley.

If you are looking for a complex, substantial novel, this book may not be for you. It is after all, a short story, revisiting Lythande the sorcerer/magician, and not a huge novel in and of itself.

This novel is a really fun read, because it gives the reader a glimpse of Marion Zimmer Bradley's world, but does so with a bit of humor. "Gratitude of Kings" is full of symbolism, and I feel that the book's message is very clear.

This is simply a delightful, "not too deep" novel, and for those unaccustomed to MZB's work, a quick look at her ability to make fantasy completely believable, and another of her fine offerings which focus around the power of women, whatever form that power may take!

                4 out of 5 stars Lythande in a children's book.......1999-09-10

...is my impression of this fairy tale like story. The female magician is conjuring her way in the usual charming wit and manners through one of her many old friend's (in no way surprising after a few centuries of lifetime) wedding ceremony in a medieval setting. With a cheerful smile on my face, I finished reading the little book with the pretty cover (hardcover, therefore its price). Just too short. I'd recomend it as a gift to casual readers or as a children's book for second grade. Isn't there someone you've always wanted to turn onto MZB?

3 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Fluff.......1998-07-01

While the story about Lythande was fairly interesting, I found myself asking at the end, "So, what was the point?" The book reads more like a short story. While somewhat entertaining, it just didn't seem to have enough plot to it to warrant making a whole book from it. I can understand printing it as a selection in an anthology, but not in this format. I have thoroughly enjoyed Bradley's wonderful Darkover series but this just falls short of the quality I expect of her. I believe this book is simply a way to make money off Bradley's name.

5 out of 5 stars A Story to Inspire All Interested in Wild Places and Beyond.......2002-07-05

A great deal of thanks should go to Bonnie Kreps and Charlie Craighead for there many years of work dedicated to the life of Mardy Murie. Their double-barreled presentation, first the wonderful film "Arctic Dance, The Mardy Murie Story", and now this fantastic book, tell the story of Margaret "Mardy" Murie like nobody else could.

More like a scrapbook, Arctic Dance brings readers on a journey as rich as any trip to the Brooks Range. Mardy, known by many as the Grandmother of American Conservation movement, has been an inspiration to several generations or activists, policy-makers and wilderness afficionandos. Her experiences and deeds as a child in Alaska, a lover and wife, a wilderness adventurer, an advocate for wild places, and a mentor to so many, give us all an example for how to live life to its fullest with meaning, and grit. Her times with husband Olaus Murie are a testiment to the power of love and partnership and how determination and humility can bring anybody far. Without her, our lives and the state of wilderness would be very different.

Craighead and Kreps bring you on this journey through stories, letters, vivid photographs and telling testimonials from those who knew Mardy best. Reading this book is the next best thing to having tea and cookies with Mardy at her log house in Moose, Wyoming.

This was a very interesting book for me. I'd often wondered about the military capabilities of the Mormon Battalion; this is the first book to address the question directly. I can't give the book 5 stars due to some awkward sentences and typos. Nevertheless, military-minded Latter-Day Saints and serious enthusiasts for the history of the American West will enjoy this one.

5 out of 5 stars An in-depth historical study of the only religious unit in American military history.......2006-05-06

History May Be Searched in Vain: A Military History of the Mormon Battalion is an in-depth historical study of the only religious unit in American military history - the Mormon battalion, which was recruited entirely from one religious body and had a religious title as the unit designation. Though the battalion served in the Mexican War and marched across the Southwest to California, it never engaged in battle, and has consequently been ignored by military historians. History May Be Searched in Vain seeks to rectify this oversight by delving into more than eighty diaries, journals, memoirs, and typed manuscript copies prepared by battalion members, including the journal of Dr. George B. Sanderson, widely feared and hated in Mormon legend as "Dr. Death". Illustrated with a handful of maps and black-and-white photographs, History May Be Searched in Vain spares no effort in its minute and accurate depiction of the battalion's unique formation and composition, daily life, strategic role, and legacy.

5 out of 5 stars A New Look at the Mormon Battalion.......2006-04-15

Norma Ricketts in her book on the Mormon Battalion focused on the human and religious aspects and the individual participants. David Bigler and Will Bagley in their book on the Mormon Battalion provided much technical detail and excellent source material. But Fleek has addressed the Mormon Battalion from the military perspective which is a new look at the subject. In so doing, he has clearly placed the Mormon Battalion in its proper role in the Mexican War and in the history of California. And, he has incorporated new information which was unavailable to the previous authors. His book is an excellent addition to the the subject and should be read by anyone with an interest in the Mormon Battalion. Best of all, it is a very readable book that will be enjoyed by anyone with an interest in the history of the West.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Effort! It is About Time.......2006-04-08

It is about time a qualified military historian tackled the Mormon Battalion. I am a Civil and Mexican War nut, and I have known a little about the battalion for a long time. Finally, we have an outstanding study of this truly American unit, a unsung and fascinating story. Lt. Col (ret) Fleek has made the claim it was a religous unit, he convinced me. He has truly placed the Battalion in context with the rest of the war and the events by using these "interjections" concerning the unfolding drama in Texas or Mexico. His descriptions of John Fremont, Robert Stockton are right on, as adventurous idiots. Fleek has a high regard for General Kearny, Col. Cooke, the Mormon soldiers and also for Mormon leader Brigahm Young, though he takes issue with the Mormons and some of Young's involvment. For a Mormon himself, Fleek's fairness and objectivity are quite refreshing.

Outstanding history! Excellent writing! A marvelous product by Arthur Clark and Company, as always!

5 out of 5 stars Another Edition to a fantastic text.......2005-08-10

This new edition of the text once again proves that these authors are the masters of single subject research. I have used this text for five years in my graduate methods course and am completely satisfied with their coverage of the material of single subject research design. Just when a researcher thought it could not get any better, this new edition comes along with updates to the software.

1 out of 5 stars enough is enough.......2005-03-22

I was pleased to hear that this text had been assigned in a graduate research course at my graduate school of social work. I'm seriously disappointed. I would not recommend this text's continued use. It is excessively repetitive, constantly restating previous material (commonly referred to as 'rehashing'), and, as a sidebar, i can't help but mention an irritating habit of unnecessary references to material yet to come ('we'll talk about that more in chapter 14.'). The writing style is terribly wordy, and in a weighted, clunky pseudo-conversational style that rarely is effective in a textbook. The actual technical information is obscured in a constant river of verbiage, usually in page after page of solid block text, the least helpful format when learning technical information (or when subsequently searching for specific information or techniques). The result? It serves as a strong sedative. Finally, the authors repeatedly express apologies, in what eventually (by page 350) feels like an obsequious and cloying manner, for putting forward an empirical and accountable approach to clinical practice. The worst, though, is the repetition of material, as if the reader were an idiot. The sheer relentlessness of it is what is so galling, and at $100 bucks, neither affordable nor worth the investment. There are other texts out there with clearer, cleaner, more articulate prose, that are more respectful of the reader, and at half the price, such as the classic and affordable: Single-Case Research Designs: Methods for Clinical and Applied Settings by Alan E. Kazdin. Ignore the pollyanna reviews above and below, and avoid this text, or if on the syllabus, protest and suggest an alternative.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic in Practice Evaluation.......2003-11-13

Bloom, Fischer and Orme continue to make an unique contribution to improving practice in the human services by providing a road map by which practitioners can evaluate their effectiveness. I've been using their text book for over 15 years in teaching practice evaluation and in has been an invaluable help. The new edition has a CD Rom with SingWin, CAAP,and CAAS which I was able to install in Windows XP Home edition. You must install CAAS before CAAP for it to work. The sofware computerizes record keeping, score computation, and graph construction. I strongly reccommend this textbook for human services faculty.
