Book Description
The birds of Sulawesi, Indonesia, are unique. Nearly 100 species are found nowhere else in the world - this high rate of endemism serves as a magnet for bird watchers world wide. This book is the first illustrated bird book for Sulawesi and it provides an introduction to the remarkable wealth of birds. Of the 278 species found there, 161 species are described, with brief reference to another 88. 142 species are illustrated in colour, 22 in black-and-white. Written in non-technical prose, distinguishing features, behaviour, voice, and habitat are covered. A complete checklist is included.
Customer Reviews:
good, but wanting book.......1999-05-14
although this is a landmark in that it is the very first book published on birds of sulawesi, it is incomplete and rather amatuerish. the illustrations are fairly good and the text is okay, but a book like this should list and descrtibe all the birds that occur on sulawesi, endemic (which there are nearly 100) and widespread. There is no mantion of the sulawesi drongo Dicrurus montanus or the Lompobattang Flycatcher (Ficedula bonthiana. the style seems as though it was intended for children rather than serious birdwatchers.

Description:
The rattan flora of Central Sulawesi is abundant, species rich and patchily distributed in lowland and montane forests. I recorded the abundance and distribution of rattan on five randomly established 10mx1000m transects between 830 and 1330m elevation and associated changes in forest canopy heights, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and soil characteristics. Rattans were observed at all sites and elevations (100% of 10mx10m sample plots in the transects contained rattan), but exhibited the greatest diversity (species richness) between 1180 and 1280m elevation. Overall (all species and elevations), there was an average of 314 mature rattan genets per hectare. The two most prominent rattans in terms of size, abundance and distribution, Calamus zollingeri and Daemonorops robusta, averaged 62 and 40genets/ha overall, respectively. Several other rattans, including C. leiocaulis, C. leptostachys, and C. ornatus occurred on all transects and all elevations. In contrast, C. didymocarpus, C. minahassae, C. symphysipus and Korthalsia celebica were patchily distributed, and C. didymocarpus and C. sp. ('kalaka') were restricted to higher elevations. Resident cane collectors differentiate C. zollingeri and D. robusta into low and high elevation forms on the basis of morphological and growth characteristics, but this distinction is not discernable in sterile specimens. Based on local classification, lowland forms of C. zollingeri and D. robusta were replaced by high elevation forms over less than 200m vertical elevation which corresponds to the transition from upper lowland to montane forests. The mean canopy height of upper lowland forest between 900 and 1000m was significantly greater than that of montane forests between 1100 and 1300m (30.0 and 21.2m, respectively). Soils in upper lowland forests had significantly higher concentrations of NO"3 and P, significantly lower organic matter levels and higher pH than montane soils in both O and A/E soil horizons. PAR levels did not vary significantly by forest type. Most large diameter rattans are marketed under a single trade name and cannot be distinguished by cane characteristics. These findings have significance for biodiversity conservation and management because rattan harvesting is widespread and unmanaged, and the Sulawesi rattan flora remains poorly known taxonomically and ecologically.
Book Description
Combining historical geography with historical demography, and conceived as a study in environmental history, this book examines the long-term relationship between population, economy, and environment in the northern half of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Using a rich variety of Dutch historical sources, it reconstructs and analyzes patterns of demographic, economic, and landscape change throughout this large and ecologically diverse region over a period of almost three and a half centuries. The results call into question some common views regarding the reasons for low population growth, and the relationship between population density and landscape change, in the Southeast Asian past.

Description:
Management activities alter the structure of many tropical forest stands which can be expected to influence the magnitude of canopy water fluxes. The objectives of this study were to determine throughfall, stemflow and rainfall interception in differently managed forest stands, and to relate the observed pattern of rainfall partitioning to stand structural characteristics. The study was conducted in a lower montane rainforest region (800-1140masl) in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia. Stands of four management types (natural forest, forest subject to small-diameter timber extraction, forest subject to selective logging of large-diameter timber, and cacao agroforest under trees remaining from the natural forest) were analyzed with three replicates per use type. The tree basal area decreased from the natural forest (52.5m^2ha^-^1) to the agroforest (19.4m^2ha^-^1) which was paralleled by a reduction in mean tree height (trees>=10cm dbh) from 21.3 to 17.5m. The estimated leaf area index (LAI), as derived from hemispherical photos, averaged 6.2m^2m^-^2 in the natural forest, 5.3 in forests with small timber extraction, 5.0 in forests with large timber extraction, and 5.3 in the agroforest. The annual gross precipitation close to our different study plots varied locally between 2437 and 3424mm during the time of the study. Throughfall was measured on 15-17 rain days per plot with a median of 70% of gross precipitation over all the natural forest plots, 79 and 80% in forest with small and large timber extraction respectively, and 81% in the agroforest. Stemflow was less than 1% in all studied use types. Thus, rainfall interception was highest in the natural forest where 30% (median) of the gross precipitation was re-evaporated back into the atmosphere, and much lower in the three other use types (18-20%). Variability in structure and rainfall partitioning was high even within the same forest use types, thus further analysis focused on gradual changes rather than categories. In the 12 stands, LAI alone did not correlate significantly with the pattern of rainfall partitioning, the throughfall percentage increased significantly with decreasing tree height (r^2=0.63). In a multiple linear regression with tree height and LAI as influencing factors, 81% of the variation in throughfall percentage is explained. A possible reason for this tree height-LAI-throughfall relationship is that under the conditions prevailing in our study region the canopy may not completely dry up between subsequent rainfall events. Therefore, the actual water storage at the start of a rainfall event would be below its potential. We hypothesize that tall trees increase the vertical distribution of foliage and other canopy components contributing to the canopy water storage, resulting in a higher canopy roughness and a more effective energy exchange with the atmosphere. This would consequently lead to an increased re-evaporation of intercepted water, larger available water storage and, thus, a reduced throughfall in stands with tall trees.

The Sulawesi natural science bible.......2007-03-21
Finally, after 11 years of searching I was able to get my hands on this book! I've been to this island, and know how hard it is to get any sort of work on the ecology and biodiversity that this island (the middle man between Australia and Asia) has to offer. The book is no longer in print so anyone who wants it is most likely going to have to buy it used at a high price, but if your a person who finds this interesting, it is worth the price.
The book covers a broad spectrum of topics, plate techtonics, rock types, soil composition, rainfall distribution, vegetation biomes, number and distribution of animal species, croplands, deforestation, coral reefs and coastline ecology, etc., etc. . . It contains hundreds of maps, charts, graphs, pictures, drawings, and tables on all of these topics and the bibliography is almost 50 pages long which lends it a great deal of credibility.
It was written several years ago, so some of the statistics on forest area and populations will naturally be out of date, but that does not undercut the fact that this book is an authoritative work produced by a massive undertaking of knowledge and dedication.

Book Description
When Miles Manning, a successful high school football player, discovers his teammates are using steroids--and one of them is his best friend--he's faced with a tough decision: Is he willing to do what it takes to win? Football is his life, and his family, especially his dad, is pinning its hopes on him. It's a lot of pressure for a high school junior to bear. This gripping look into the world of high school boys and athletes--and their struggle to be the best--is provocative and searingly honest.
Customer Reviews:
John Coy Shows Promise.......2007-07-15
As a debut YA effort, I can't fault John Coy's CRACKBACK for trying. In fact, it shows hints of bigger things to come, but ultimately I think this novel will please most its niche audience only -- middle school-aged boys who love football. I plan to offer it to my students who claim they don't read because reading's too boring because I think this will be of interest to them if they love playing football.
Many other young readers will be disappointed or ambivalent about this book, however, as I was. Most notable to me was the overabundance of short, simple sentences in rather large font. They actually slowed me down because I wasn't able to get into any reading rhythm due to the "staccato-like" diction. My advice to Coy would be to mix it up with some longer sentences and paragraphs now and then.
I also thought the characterizations of both the protagonist's (Miles Manning's) father and one of his coaches (Coach Stahl) were too similar and too much like cardboard cutouts of creeps. There was an attempt at the end to salvage the father, but it just didn't go over so well. The good coach (Coach Sepolski), good teacher (Mr. Halloran), good little sister (Martha) and good mother (Mom) all had small roles here, so they didn't help to distract me from the Tweedledee and Tweedledum aspects of Dad and Stahl.
The same is true for the other football players on the team -- minor roles, overall. A field goal for Coy on his knowledge of football, however. It does come across as realistic because he knows his sport. One plot development -- the issue of steroid use -- kind of fizzled after showing promise early on. Ditto the plot points surrounding evil Coach Stahl. The end on that count is as unrewarding as a tie game after overtime.
What I liked best was Miles' point of view. I enjoyed some of his "quirky" thoughts about girls, adult hypocrisy, school, gays, and the importance (or nonimportance) of winning. Miles is not a stereotype like Dad or Coach Stahl, and readers will appreciate him as a real person with genuine thoughts and problems.
Coy, already famous as a picture book author for young children, is entering the YA field for the first time with this novel. I think he shows promise and, if I were a scout at the game, I'd put a check near his name to keep an eye on future works. If you have a kid who loves football (or if you ARE a kid who loves football), buy it and enjoy it. Otherwise it might be like paying a lot of money to watch the Arizona Cardinals play "NFL" football -- a tad disappointing.

How does pressure from the coaches, news, parents, and fans affect a high school student who plays sports?
This book is about a kid name Miles Manning who is a starter at Wide Receiver for his varsity football team at 5'11'' and 155 pounds. He doesn't lift weights over the summer like rest of the guys, so he is weaker. The coaches are pushing him to work harder and listen to the coaches, but they still say that he catches the ball wrong. His friend offered him 2 pills that help him have an edge over everyone else and his friend says they're like a jolt of caffeine. Then later on his friends offered him some other pills to take. Miles does some research and finds out they are steroids.
His friends keep pushing him to take the pills so he can be bigger and stronger. His friends are getting bigger and bigger everyday, but the coach doesn't know they are taking steroids. The coach wants him to be big and strong like his teammates. He has a big choice to make taking the drugs and getting bigger plus hurting his body slowly or take the long way and keep his career.
My favorite part of the book is his final game because it's so intense and there's tons of action going on really fast. It feels like you are there watching them play out on the field and sometimes you feel like one of the players.
Overall I liked this book. The author, John Coy writes this book so you can't put it down. When you read it it's like watching a movie and sometimes you feel like you are there. Everyone should read this book. You get to see high school life, sports, girls, drugs, parties, and tons of other things in a high school student's life. This book is realistic fiction.
By Kyle Struiksma
Read It!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-19
Stunning, thrilling, fascinating, phenomenal, sports, one book you don't want to put down. Crackback. What does this mean. What kind of title is this? Think about football for one moment. Plays. Tackling. Running routes. Well the title of this book means/One play so well designed that it will crush your football dreams forever.
If you are in high school and play football then you will enjoy reading this book. As an18-year-old senior in high school, Miles Manning overcomes hell. He goes through peer pressure, overcomes fights, and still manages to do good in school. Have you ever played football? Have you ever been burned in football on a play that the other team scores on every time? If the whole team was counting on you and you were so nervous that you have no time to respond, and then BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMM you are the first person to stop that play. What would you feel? What would you do?
Now one screw up and back at the bottom you are. This is a book that goes up to the climax and down to the bottom of boredom. There are lots of off your seat times in this book that will surprise you. This is a great book for those football players out there. This book is a great source to good football and to having fun doing it.
crackback.......2007-05-16
The book crackback has a realistic genre. It was written by John Coy. Also it was illustated by Marijka Kostiw. You got to give them both credit for this book. Because this book is an exciting novel that keeps you focused throughout the time you read. It's a high school and sports book. So if you like sports you will love this book. The sport they are playing in this book is football. High school football is one of the best times for football. The story is revolved around a young tennager fighting for a spot on the varsity fooball team for his school. The coach got sick and a new coach came in and made his life and tough one. The coach did not like the player, and it was a hard ride thoughout the year for the player. If I was looking at this book and I was deciding if i was going to read it or not. Since I have read it I would choose to read it again. I would recomened this book to anyone that love sports and who is addicted to it and remembers high school to read this book.
What a great book.......2007-04-05
Miles is your typical high school student, football player, watching the girls, and the friends he needs to impress. His dad is a controlling, over angry parent. There is no dealing with that guy. He wants Miles "man" Manning to be the best football player in the world. Anything else is a disappointment. Then one play he screws up one play and it will haunt him. His friend Zach wants him to take the "roids", but he doesn't, so Zach hates him. Then right when his life can't get worse he meets a girl.

Book Description
In
Linear Programming: A Modern Integrated Analysis, both boundary (simplex) and interior point methods are derived from the complementary slackness theorem and, unlike most books, the duality theorem is derived from Farkas's Lemma, which is proved as a convex separation theorem. The tedium of the simplex method is thus avoided.
A new and inductive proof of Kantorovich's Theorem is offered, related to the convergence of Newton's method. Of the boundary methods, the book presents the (revised) primal and the dual simplex methods. An extensive discussion is given of the primal, dual and primal-dual affine scaling methods. In addition, the proof of the convergence under degeneracy, a bounded variable variant, and a super-linearly convergent variant of the primal affine scaling method are covered in one chapter. Polynomial barrier or path-following homotopy methods, and the projective transformation method are also covered in the interior point chapter. Besides the popular sparse Cholesky factorization and the conjugate gradient method, new methods are presented in a separate chapter on implementation. These methods use LQ factorization and iterative techniques.

Tour de Force!.......2002-01-05
I just survived the course taught by Prof. Saigal based on this book. I cannot imagine any aspect of the field prior to 1995 that was not covered. The visual aids were, sadly, notable for their abscense. The algorithm descriptions were clear, concise, and written in a kind of general purpose pseudo-code that was easily translatable to MATLAB. By using the algorithm descriptions to write our own LP programs we probably learned far more than we would have by learning about commercial LP packages. One thing that would have helped; a few more non-trivial problems with known solutions to use as test data when debugging programs.
A good text book on mathematics foundations for LP.......1999-09-13
The book meets the need for a teacher/research worker in LP theory, given the modern developments after development of Karmarkar's interior point approaches. The chapter 2 gives the basic background about analysis & numerical linear algebra. It makes duality as central theme. ( It differs from earlier OR books, where duality is introduced after simplex algorithm discussed). It is interesting to note the amount of attention paid to the issue of degeneracy. This is the special aspect of the book. The author discusses the interior point methods in a very systmeatic way; giving the necessary proofs. Last chapter discusses the implementation issues. Interestingly, the book has no figures, no diagramms. May the author is against use of them. The author could have given more details about Korbx, or the solvers available ( like AMPL, public domain interior point solvers), so that the reader is made aware the concepts dealt in the book is useful even for users of LP.
Book Description
Written for readers with little knowledge of the subject, Sexual/Textual Politics nevertheless makes its own intervention into key debates, arguing provocatively for a commitedly political and theoretical criticism as against merely textual or apolitical approaches.

Book Description
Hailed by some feminists as the single most important theoretical work of this century, but ignored or reviled by others, Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex (1949) occupies an anomalous place in the feminist canon. Yet it has had an undeniable impact not only on the development of critiques of sexual politics but on twentieth-century Western thinking about the concept of "woman" in general. This collection of six new essays by scholars from the disciplines of French, English literature, history, cultural criticism, feminist theory and philosophy makes a valuable contribution to the task of re-reading and reassessing this enormously significant text for a new generation of feminist readers. The contributors provide new perspectives on the place of The Second Sex in cultural history, on women and representation, on the role of "fictions" and on the problem of ethical agency in the work of the leading intellectual women of this age.

last night a book changed my life.......2000-08-23
This is a very important book, that much I cannot stress enough. I found a copy in the Complutense library in Madrid in 1998, and spent my days consumed by kristeva, cixous and iriguray, turning page after page in mark's and de courtivron's incredibly well-organised and informative work. if you've read toril moi's sexual/textual politics and got to grips with the generalities of the scene, then this is the next step. if you haven't this is as good a starter as any for 'feminist' food for thought.
