"Hold onto their heads while I get their jaws apart." Steve Irwin grew up with his parents and sisters in Australia. His parents started the Beerwah Reptile Park, which later grew into Australia Zoo. Ever since he was a young boy, Steve has helped his dad capture and relocate crocodiles. In September of 1991, Terri and a friend went to Australia for vacation. Terri was introduced to Steve and four months later they were engaged. Immediately after their wedding in June in Terri's hometown in Oregon, they went back to Australia to begin filming the hit TV series "The Crocodile Hunter." They had many adventures all over the world and were running the zoo. On July 24, 1998 their daughter Bindi Sue Irwin was born. They continue to help injured and orphaned animals and teach people to conserve wild life. I really enjoyed reading this book.

I liked that the book told of some of their adventures. One of the trips they went on was to drive along the longest manmade structure, Australia's Dingo Fence. Another was when they had to free climb to a lower edge of a cliff and Terri nearly fell. One of their adventures with a crocodile was when they were trying to move Charlie from a cement enclosure to the zoo.

I also liked that they put animal facts and survival tips in the book without being a distraction. They said that the perentie was the largest lizard in Australia. They also said that ninety percent of fatal snake bites in Australia happen when a person is trying to kill or catch the snake. They said you shouldn't cut, lick, or wash a snake bite so that a doctor can swab the bite to find out if the serpent is venomous and what species it is.

I liked that they gave several descriptive facts about Steve's parents. Steve's dad, Bob, and his mom, Lyn, were both great naturalists and herpetologists. Bob was raised in the state of Victoria by his mom and grandmother during the depression. His father and grandfather both died while fighting the Japanese in the specific. Lyn worked very hard to learn better techniques for rehabilitating marsupials. Lyn and Bob knew each other since they were kids.

Another thing I compliment the book on was that it told of times when they made mistakes or felt embarrassed. When Steve was very young his dad had to push him out of the way because he was stepping on brown snake, one of the most venomous snakes in the world. Another time, Steve caught several red-bellied black snakes and brought them on the bus. His dad was furious and yelled at him right in front of his friends. When Steve and Terri were out catching crocs Terri couldn't keep the spotlight still, resulting in Steve missing the little crocodiles. The lives of Steve and Terri Irwin are never dull and are full of adventure. I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in adventure and wildlife.

                  Book Description

Queueing systems and networks are being applied to many areas of technology today, including telecommunications, computers, satellite systems, and traffic processes. This timely book, written by 26 of the most respected and influential researchers in the field, provides an overview of fundamental queueing systems and networks as applied to these technologies. Frontiers in Queueing: Models and Applications in Science and Engineering was written with more of an engineering slant than its predecessor, Advances in Queueing: Theory, Methods, and Open Problems. The earlier book was primarily concerned with methods, and was more theoretically oriented. This new volume, meant to be a sequel to the first book, was written by scientists and queueing theorists whose expertise is in technology and engineering, allowing readers to answer questions regarding the technicalities of related methods from the earlier book. Each chapter in the book surveys the classes of queueing models and networks, or the applied methods in queueing, and is followed by a discussion of open problems and future research directions. The discussion of these future trends is especially important to novice researchers, students, and even their advisors, as it provides the perspectives of eminent scientists in each area, thus showing where research efforts should be focused. Frontiers in Queueing: Models and Applications in Science and Engineering also includes applications to vital areas of engineering and technology, specifically, telecommunications, computers and computer networks, satellite systems, traffic processes, and more applied methods such as simulation, statistics, and numerical methods. All researchers, from students to advanced professionals, can benefit from the sound advice and perspective of the contributors represented in this book.

5 out of 5 stars How perceptions of the great American deserts have changed over time.......2006-08-08

The New Desert Reader is a 384-page collection of informed and informative writings about the American Southwest that show how perceptions of the great American deserts have changed over time. First Dreamers is a chapter that explores ancient legends of the Tohono O'Odham Indians,; it is followed by Two Dreams Meet, taken from a narrative by Cabeza de Vaca. Among additional authors whose writings are included are, Dean and Lucille Saxton, William L. Manley, Horace Greeley, John Wesley Powell, Clarence E. Dutton, Mary Austin, D. H. Lawrence, Aldo Leopold, Wallace Stegner, Ann Zwinger, Tony Hillerman, and Peter Wild himself. All share a viewpoint and an experience of the desert, and those thoughts its aridity causes to flower. The shift in attitude is really more of a circle, a coming home to the notion that the desert is perhaps a type of sacred space to be cultivated and respected, rather than a despicable environment to be used and abused. The desert is a great teacher, perhaps, is one conclusion, if we are ready for the lesson, and if we survive it. A number of black and white pen drawing illustrations enrich the text. They are taken from a variety of historical sources acknowledged in the book. As an example of the later writers, Joseph Wood Krutch writes in "God's Hand in the Sky:" ""If what I find in the desert is no example to be imitated, it suggests a metaphor...it is .. the kind of thing I learn from an essay by Emerson or a poem by Emily Dickinson... I shall not forget its lesson: much can be lacking in the midst of plenty; on the other hand, where some things are scarce others, no less desirable, may abound (pages 232-233)." The New Desert Reader brings together diverse writers' thoughts about the desert over time. Like a prism, it yields a rainbow of experiences to be distilled by the reader.

                      Book Description

St. Martin's is proud to present a new and continuing series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large. The twenty-sixth president of the United States was also a world-renowned hunter, conservationist, soldier, and scholar. In 1908 he took a long safari holiday in East Africa with his son Kermit. His account of this adventure is as remarkably fresh today as it was when these adventures on the veldt were first published. Roosevelt describes the excitement of the chase, the people he met (including such famous hunters as Cunninghame and Selous), and flora and fauna he collected in the name of science. Long out of print, this classic is one of the preeminent examples of Africana, and belongs on every collector's shelf.

This book reads like a loping conversation with Roosevelt about his safari in east Africa. He is full of dated opinions about native peoples, and the endless hunting scenes are not for vegetarians. All this said, it is a bully adventure book.

2 out of 5 stars African Game Trails (Capstick Library).......2007-01-24

I purchased a copy of this book and am extremely disapointed with the quality of the photographs. They are so fuzzy and out-of-focus as to be useless--in some cases unrecognizable. I'm suprised that you offer such a poor quality volume for sale. I coresponded with the publisher and the nice young lady offered to send me another copy but added "I looked at the pictures and they're terrible." I replied that I already had one lousy copy and did not need another. You should check the quality of this volume carefully....it's terrible!

4 out of 5 stars Classic African Safari Travel Narrative.......2002-11-22

In 1909, just after the end of his term as President, Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Africa for a year long safari. The trip was a major undertaking ; hundreds of porters were needed to carry his baggage. Roosevelt's son, Kermit came along, taking photographs which are reproduced in the book. Roosevelt and company bag hundred of animals. It appears that all hunting rules were suspended for the ex-president. Roosevelt and son are soon blasting away at anything and everything that comes into view. British East Africa is described in terms that make today's politically correct readers wince. Attitudes have changed dramatically in less than one hundred years. It is odd to hear Roosevelt describe parts of Africa as a "white man's country," suitable for large scale settlement by Europeans. The book bogs down and I was unable to read it without skimming through some parts. The descriptions of marching through wilderness and chasing after game on foot and on horseback seem to go on forever. There is a lot of great infomation here even if it is necessary to become your own editor by skipping though tedious parts.

5 out of 5 stars A must read if you are going on safari.......2002-05-20

This book gives you the genuine flavor of safari 80 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Better than being there.......2001-11-24

Not being very good with a gun, having little outdoorsman skills, and not being in the best shape of my life, reading this book was better than being there. If I was there, I would miss the animals, I would be too tired to enjoy it, and besides all of that, Africa is not as it was 100 years ago.
I have just begun to reread this book, and I don't know how many times this is. I enjoy it each and every time I pick it up.

                                            Book Description

Major General William Alexander (1726-1783) was one of George Washington's most trusted generals. Both had served as general aides during the French and Indian War, both were prominent and successful. William Alexander spent several years in London pursuing his claim to the vacant Earldom of Stirling - a Scottish peerage which would have entitled him to attend the House of Lords. Had his claim been perfected, he would have been one of only two Lords in North America. Even though he did not receive the imprimatur of Parliament to the Earldom, he called himself Lord Stirling, anyway. So did George Washington.

This biography was written by his grandson, William Alexander Duer, of Morristown, New Jersey. It was originally published in 1848 by the New Jersey Historical Society, and has been out of print for over 150 years. The work examines Lord Stirling's life primarily through his correspondence. It remains one of the key sources on this outstanding, but little known patriot.

The Digital Edition (Adobe PDF) is published in portrait orientation; extensive footnotes appear on the pages in which they are referenced; fully-searchable, fully-printable. Collections of images which support the biography are accessed through DigitalAntiquaria.com.

                                            Book Description

Along with Emiliano Zapata, Ricardo Flores Magon (b. 1874) is regarded as one of the most important figures of the Mexican revolution. Through his newspaper Regeneracion, he boldly criticized the injustices of the country's military dictatorship and worked to build the popular movement that eventually overthrew it. Exiled to the United States, Flores Magon continued to agitate for revolution in Mexico. Transcending nationalism, he also dreamed of a world free from all forms of injustice. Both the US and Mexican governments responded with harsh repression. Leavenworth Penitentiary ultimately murdered him in 1922.

This volume collects the first English translations of Flores Magon's most important writings. A lengthy historical overview, chronology, maps, images, and bibliography provide context for his work.

"Mitchell Verter and Chaz Bufe have given us a great gift with this fascinating volume on Ricardo Flores Magon. He was a revolutionary from a very different time from our own, but today's activists will make an immediate and intense connection with his passion for social justice. This is a gift that will only grow as you pass it on to others!"-Barbara Ehrenreich, author of Nickel and Dimed and Bait and Switch

"The life, words, and ideas of Ricardo Flores Magon are as important today as they were around 100 years ago. Bravo for this wonderful book that won't let us forget those days and those heroes. Today, as always, remembering is revolutionary"-Luis Rodriguez, author of Always Running and My Name is Hunger

"Dreams of Freedom" is an amazing anthology of essays by the legendary Mexican radical, Ricardo Flores Magon, who was murdered by agents of the state in the Leavenworth Penitentiary back in 1922. Sadly, the injustices he so passionately wrote about and fought against almost a century ago are still among us today, like: the criminalization of immigrants, the suppression of civil liberties, union-busting, police brutality, the prison industrial complex, imperialist war, the militarization of the US/Mexico border and the violence of white supremacist militias (like the Minutemen). I especially enjoyed his writings on feminism and his committment to bringing issues of racial equality into the labor movement. In sum, "Dreams of Freedom" is a ground-breaking work. Thank you AK Press and Chaz Bufe for keeping alive this vital chapter in people's history!

Dreams Of Freedom: A Ricardo Flores Magon Reader presents a selection of the revolutionary journalist and agitator Ricardo Flores Magon. Born in Mexico in 1874, Magon dared to criticize the injustices of the Diaz military dictatorship that ruled Mexico, in his widely read newspaper Regeneracion. Exiled to the United States, Magon remained an influential agitator behind the Mexican Revolution, earning the wrath of both governments. He was finally murdered in Leavenworth Penitentiary in 1922. Dreams Of Freedom presents Magon's determined and vibrant revolutionary writings in English for the first time, along with a lengthy biographical sketch to place his words in historical context, a chronology, bibliography, and an introduction by Benjamin Maldonado. Most of the individual writings are brief yet passionate and sharply to the point. Highly recommended particularly for students of political science and Mexican history.

                                            Book Description

Applying twenty-first century analytical and quantitative ways of thinking about forest resource management problems . . . Now available from Waveland Press, the fourth edition of Forest Management—revised significantly from previous, successful editions—offers authoritative, up-to-date coverage of broad-scope concepts and ideas for those entering the fields of forest management, forest economics, and forest ecology. Viewed as large integrated ecosystems that are often owned and managed by multiple landowners, forests continue to be at the center of debates involving global warming and the sustaining of human populations. Because long-term ecological outcomes of forest management activities continue to be of heightened concern to citizens, interest groups, and regulators, the comprehensive fourth edition recognizes the scope of ecological, economic, and social outcomes from the management and use of forest lands. It provides future decision makers and stakeholders with contemporary methods to make quantitative estimates of the consequences of implementing alternative management or policy scenarios for forests. Available on the authors' Web site are useful databases, files, and worksheets used to generate, solve, and report solutions to problems of forest management. Outstanding features and coverage! 1) includes greatly expanded exposition of the definition, measurement, and practical application of sustainability and sustained yield concepts; 2) stresses the critical role of comprehensive silvicultural prescriptions and their spatial assignment to provide for a multitude of forest outcomes, including timber, wildlife, and recreation within sustainable ecosystems; 3) provides an introduction to the concepts, methods, and applications of explicit spatial analysis of forest tracts, watersheds, and ecological units using new heuristic techniques, and illustrates the techniques using teaching models and data sets; and 4) offers examples and problems to illustrate analyses presented in the book.

I bought this book for use in a master's class in resource managment. It is very technical and involves a lot of math.
