4 out of 5 stars Son of the Mob.......2007-04-08

If I had to change my name to anything else it would be to Vincent Luca. This is the name of the Son of the Mob. This was the second book of the series about the son of the mob that I read. Vincent is the first Luca to graduate from high school and make it to college. When he gets there he hopes he will be mafia-free, because he does not like his other option, actually joining the mob. Within Vincent's first week at college his brother Tommy shows up at his dorm and ends up staying for a while.

Throughout the other quarter of the book, Vincent's "uncles", men who work under Vincent's father, start showing up at his dorm with his mother's homemade food. The "uncles" say that they are there to go sightseeing, but Vincent has other suspicions. Ironically Vincent's college roommate is the son of a Congressman. He has a knack for the "five finger discount". Vincent's roommate finds out about the mob connection, Vincent therefore wants his roommate to stay far away from hid "uncles" in case he has any ideas about joining the mob. This is my favorite part of the book

It turns out that Tommy is only in town to find ways to scam money. The "uncles" are only there so they can cause riots at all of the Congressman's speeches.
Vincent's roommate goes out and steals a car, at the same Vincent finds out that his own father is in town, and mysteriously someone important goes missing. To add up to a great grand finale, Vincent and his roommate both follow their fathers coincidentally at the same time. It turns out they are all headed to the same place, the same place the missing person is being held. The question now is whose the good guy and whose the bad guy???
This book was well written and well put together. The author did a good job of piecing together the facts. He alluded, very well I might add, to what it would be like in the mob. It was the kind of book that you felt like you were a part of. It really felt like you knew what Vincent was going through. I would definately reccomend this book to anyone interested in an action packed novel.

5 out of 5 stars Book Review of Son of the Mob Hollywood Hustle.......2007-03-23

What would someone do if they thought they were finally away from the mob but then it suddenly came back into their life? Vince Luca faced this in the fantastic book Son of the Mob Hollywood Hustle by Gordon Karman.

At first Vince goes off to college happy to get away from the mob which is his father's business. His roommate, Trey, is the son of a congressman. As things go on Vince's relationship with his girlfriend, Kendra goes down hill and he gets mixed up with an evil scheme.

There are multiple things that I loved about this book. First, I enjoyed the plot because it always kept me hooked and I always wanted to know what would happen next. This is shown when Trey steals something and gets caught. When he got caught I wanted to know what would happen to him. Another thing I liked about this book was the theme. The theme teaches people that just because someone looks and acts good around the public does not mean that they don't do bad things and vice versa. Finally, I loved the character development. For example, Trey hated his dad and what he did at the beginning but Trey matures and learns that he actually loves his dad and will help him no matter what.

This book would be appropriate for teens because it has lots of action and suspense and different relationships. I enjoyed Son of the Mob Hollywood Hustle by Gordon Karman and I hope other people do too.

3 out of 5 stars An ok book.......2007-03-03

I read the book Son of the Mob. And I did not think it was that great of a book. It started out as a kid from New York. Who always dreamed of going to Hollywood and becoming a director.

I think this book could of bean better. I did not think this book was worth reading. I think it had a good plan. But this one didn't stick.

I like the plan. The characters. The author. But it was poorly exicuted.

Over all I think this book is ok. It's a fine book. But it didn't make sence. I was poorly writen.

4 out of 5 stars Son of the Mob.......2006-06-09

The start of the book was an adventure already. It began like any good story should, with a bang as my seventh and eigth grade language arts teacher would say. The book begins describing for the first two or three chapters about the life of a young man that lives in New York. His father is a Mobster that he is always argueing with and getting in fights about his fathers job of killing people and taking their money. So during the entire book Vince (the main character) and his dad Anthony Luca are getting in fights because Vince doesn't agree and he promises never to have anything to do with the mob. Vince can't do anything about it because all the clothes he has ever excepted form his father and mother were from stolen money. Vince isn't the most popular kid at highschool and he doesn't have a girlfreind until he meets the girl of his dreams named Kendra. So they date for a while and when the time comes that she wants to come over to his house he has to say no because his father and Uncles of the mob are always "working" in the house, but he never tells her the real reason of why she can't come over and get to know his family because he always makes wierd excuses. But when he goes to see her family he learns something knew, her father works for the FBI and his main objective is to try to put Vince's dad in jail. So when the time comes that he accually tells her who his dad and how he really knew her dad she was supprised but still wanted to continue their relationship, and they agreed to never go to eachother's houses. When the time comes to be voted for Prom King and Queen there are a bunch of posters that say to vote for Kendra and Vince. He thinks it's her and she thinks it's him, and neither of them want to get voted for because it is a big thing in their part of the town, so if they do get voter they could possible be found out by each other's parents. So the whole thing almost makes them brake up, and they do for a short time. During this time Vince has been trying to help these two men that need help to pay his father $600. While he promised Kendra that he would stay out of his father's business he gets involved and her father being an FBI agent sees this and takes pictures as evidence and Kendra sees the pictures. So after Vince broke his promise she gets really agrivated and that is the reason they break up for some time. The only reason that they don't break up forever, is because Kendra does some research of her own and he is innocent and they get back together. Inconclusion Vince has a hard time dealing with his father's business getting the way with everything, and messing with his life.

5 out of 5 stars son of the mob hollywood hustle.......2006-04-11

If you like the kind of book that can be funny with a lot of action an romance all at the same time this is the book for you. The son of the mob is the second bnook in the series of son of the mob books. The book is about a high school graduate named vince luka that is going to collage in hollywood to learn how to be a film director but this isnt just any ordinary kid he is the son of a mob boss in New York city. When vince gets to collage his roomate is the son of a fomouse congresman that is running for governer, talk about two different worlds. Everything is going ok until some of vinces fathers cronies show up for a little vacation but vince knows better than that and soon enough the congressmans opponent is kidnapped.
I think this is a great book because it always kept me on my toes and it has a great surprise ending.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, great price.......2005-02-03

I took this book on a recent research trip to a preserve near La Selva, and used it daily. Not just a field guide with pretty pictures, this book contains a key to the species. Since it is specific to this area of the country, it cut down on the amount of material that had to be sorted through to ID organisms. I could quickly key out species without having to worry about whether or not this was the right area for that particular species. The photos were clear and beautiful, with different color phases and sexual dimorphisms illustrated. If you are traveling to this specific area of Costa Rica, this book is really useful. It's small, lightweight, easy to use, and CHEAP!

5 out of 5 stars The Bahamas are not part of the Caribbean.......2001-02-15

I am not a customer but the editor of the book. I just noticed the review that complains the volume left out a key part of the Caribbean, the Bahamas. Interestingly enough, the Bahamas are in the Atlantic Ocean and not in nor border the Caribbean Sea.

2 out of 5 stars Excludes a large part of the Caribbean, the Bahama Islands.......1999-06-12

A book on this subject is a welcome addition to the library of any herpetologist. However, this book has a number of shortcomings including its exclusion of the entire Bahama archipelago. A book with this title should include these islands with their endangered species. The book includes 8 color plates each with up to 11 color photos of native species. Unfortunately, a number of the captions do not match the photos on the plates making them useless to the uninitiated.

This book will be useful, however the typos and missing geographic coverage along with the unusually high price for such a small book are definite drawback.

This is a college-level, acedemic textbook and not a field guide which may account for its price.

While Trojan prince Paris returns to Troy with Helen, the Achaean fleet mistakenly attacks Mysia, then is scattered by a storm. High King Agamemnon gathers the army again, but for the fleet to sail, the gods require the life of Agamemnon's eldest daughter, Iphigenia.

5 out of 5 stars Intricate story of a legendary war.......2007-06-13

Sacrifice is the second in a series of comics which retell the story of the Trojan wat in comic book form. It begins with Paris returning to Troy with Helen after having abducted her and then spent a couple of years raiding coastal cities and generally living it up. They have also started a family of their own, which gets Helen into Troy as far as the king is concerned. Meanwhile, Agamemnon's thousand ships are sailing toward Troy, or so everyone thinks, but first the oracle has a few more errands to run.

The plot is extremely intricate. It all comes from mythology, and there's a lot there to pull from. Doing the Illiad in seven comics makes sense. One book would only have allowed for the outline of the story. By breaking it into more books, the story is more complete and here the Illiad has been adapted well to the medium.

Graphically the book is well drawn. I'm guessing that the big challenge here was to keep faces consistent so that all the characters can be told apart. There are many, many characters and they are recognizable from frame to frame, if that helps to tell you the level of detail. The storytelling and how layouts play into that is good too. Layouts help to blend in and reveal characters's backstories (and everyone has a back story in mythology) and to communicate oracles and messages from the various gods.

This is a good read as a comic book. Being a modern take on the Illiad, which concievably someone might someday make you read, is an added bonus. Libraries should definitely stock this series. For individuals and families this is a good buy for a comic book, and a pretty good read. You should already know this, but if you don't then here goes, many of the classics have a lot of sex and violence. So, don't buy this for your four year old if you don't want them to see naked people and drawings of smeared entrails.

                        5 out of 5 stars amazing re-discovery of Iliad.......2007-05-07

I was surprized how eager my daughter (15) was to read this "comic" version of Homer's Iliad. Considering that she is not a big fan of reading, this book was a real discovery for her. Thanks to the author, Eric Shanower. He did a fair job to the original. We are impatiently awaiting for the sequel.

5 out of 5 stars I got my copy signed........2006-08-11

This is the second volume of the collected editions of the Age of Bronze comic book. It reprints issues 10 through 19 of the comic. As good as Volume 1 was, Volume 2 is even better. Eric Shanower's art is beautiful, and he tells the story very well. He does an excellent job of giving each member of this huge cast of characters a distinct personality. I can't wait to read future volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Bravo! Superb book........2006-06-28

I just ripped through A Thousand Ships and Sacrifice in two days and I'm bowled over. What a tour de force these books are. Shanower seamlessly incorporates all the myths entwined in the Trojan War. An incredible feat by itself, it's even more impressive because he achieves this without bogging down what is, after all, a ripping good story.

In the course of the book, Shanower offers some interesting insights on some of the more puzzling and disturbing events (Iphigenia's sacrifice comes to mind). I also was impressed by how he developed the characters. For instance, he convincingly portrays Odysseus changing from a clever Trojan War draft-dodger to a gung-ho warrior by the end of the second book.

I can't wait for Shanower's next book in the series. Until then, I'm pressing these books on everyone I know. They're THAT good. Bravo!

                        5 out of 5 stars a strong sequel to "A Thousand Ships".......2006-02-06

Eric Shanower's "Sacrifice" is a strong sequel to "A Thousand Ships," continuing the saga of the Trojan War. Shanower pulls no punches with the characters as he brings Agamemnon's daughter Iphigenia to meet her fate at Aulis.

Students of the period will enjoy the historical accuracy of his artwork in terms of architecture, weaponry, and costume - often bringing to mind specific artifacts. (The stylized makeup worn by the priestess Thetis, mother of Achilles, is just one of many excellent examples I could cite.)

Shanower weaves together the disparate pieces of the myth into an engaging, compelling whole. A most enjoyable read - I can hardly wait for the next installment!
