Not Just Another Guidebook of Bali.......2005-08-05
"Follow a duck between two rice fields and see where it leads you". That's one of the opening tips of the book.
Another tip says "do like Balinese: wake up early to catch the glorious mornings; nap during the afternoon heat".
This is not just another guidebook. It's not just pointing you the direction or tell us what is in a place. It is written by people who love Bali with aim to make you feel the same and why you should feel that way. To get the spirit of the places.
So the advice is not "you have to go there from here" but instead "use these tips to get started, then close our book and discover by yourself..." This is very refreshing in a time where many guidebooks are written by people with more interest with money than the place itself and surely know little of it, producing book with lack of character, provide little information and only me-too advice.
The Natural Guide also drives us to think beyond what we usually think as traveler; something we usually just pass, enjoy or take it for granted now have something, like how every tiny terrace gets its share of water?
After visiting Bali for many times I feel like I've just found it and get my spirit again to discover more, yet it advices me: "don't feel obliged to visit all the recommended temples, lakes and volcanoes"... at the same time I find many off the beaten track trips very exciting and give a very different experience.
Other thing unique about this book is its support to the environmental issues and local community. This is relevant because the island is posing increasing threat of its natural resources from growing population and tourist industry and on the other hand it has to preserve its charming character and tradition. Thus the hotel owners who work with locals to clean the beaches, dive masters who protect and rehabilitate the coral will be introduced to us in a hope to bring conscious, responsible travelers.
So just like what I said, this is not jus another guidebook. I highly recommend this book for you who want to have valuable experience of the island and make a difference.
Probably the Leading Guide to Bali.......2004-12-25
This book is not just another guide book. It's a guide book with a mission. The authors' intentions and commitments shine through clearly on every page. Their mission is the laudable one of responsible, ecologically aware tourism. The aim is to provide the tourist with rewarding experiences while at the same time benefiting local communities. It is the first of a new series and I think it will become a leader.
When I pick up a guide book, I test it by looking at what it says about the places I love and know well. So, I check what they have to say about Poppies in Kuta, Café Batujimbar in Sanur, and, I must admit, my own restaurant in Ubud, Murni's Warung, and my holiday accommodation, Villa Kunang-Kunang. If I agree, then it's a good book. It's a good book.
It's exceptionally easy to navigate your way round, everything nicely highlighted in colours and bold type. It's basically in six sections: the Introduction, South Bali, East Bali, North Bali, West Bali, and the Appendices. The four middle sections are broken down into Getting Around, Where to Stay, Where to Eat and What to Do and rated according to traveller-friendly, nature-friendly and community-friendly criteria. A system of coloured hearts makes it easy to check assessments at a glance. All price ranges are covered.
Each section has a series of essays by insiders, locals and ex-pats, who live in Bali. The essays are exceptionally informative, current and no holds barred. Many are shortened versions of articles that have appeared in Latitudes Magazine in the last three or four years. Without exception, they are interesting.
Jean Couteau's "An Introduction to Balinese Religion" will help you understand a little of what's going on. Otherwise most of what you see will be a complete mystery. In "Balinese painters: Where art thou, art?" Diana Darling tries to get us to educate our eyes to appreciate the good and bad in paintings in numerous art shops and galleries. In my own article, "A Dance for Every Day" I explain what the Balinese themselves like to see in traditional dance performances.
There are four 3D views of Bali and a number of road maps. Most places mentioned seem to be indicated on the road maps. Every page has two columns. Against each entry is a description of how to get to it (in Bali that is particularly helpful), current prices, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail and web site addresses, and an ecological comment or two.
Nearly every one of the 447 pages has one or two photographs by a wide range of photographers. They are a bit small. Size has been traded for quantity. The Appendices contain an excellent book list and where to obtain them and a description of relevant web sites, some of which promise to be fascinating.
Ann Gouyon, the editor, advises us: "Follow the butterfly or the old man with a smile. Open your eyes and hearts to make new encounters and unearth hidden treasures." We can have a great holiday in Bali with the help of this book, but it is a reminder, and we all need it, that we make a difference just by being there.
I thoroughly recommend this book.

A great guide.......2002-10-01
Author, Alice Vollmar has live in Minnesota for the past 28 years. Who better to write a book about the area? Divided by region, this book offers information on dining, recreation, lodging, camping, and rates each using a four star system. It takes the guess work out of planning a trip to the area. A great guide for visitor and resident alike.
In addition, "101 Things To Do on the Wisconsin Great River Road", is a great gift idea.
A Usable Guide.......2000-09-18
This travel guide book is one that you'll actually keep in the front seat of the car and use. It's a nice size and contains lots of extra resource information, too.
Book Description
Beautiful artwork created by Disney legend John Hench and celebrated illustrator Al Dempster grace the pages of Walt Disneys Peter Pan. The illustrations were inspired by The walt Disney Studios 1953 film. This new addition to the Walt Disney Classic Edition series will introduce a new generation of readers to the classic art of storytelling that are the heart of Disney. Based on the story by Sir James M. Barrie, Peter Pan tells of the magical boy who refuses to grow up and takes three young children on adventures to Never Land with him.

I Believe...........2007-03-16
This review refers to the Great Illustrated Classics of "Peter Pan" by J.M. Barrie, adapted for young readers by Marian Leighton...
Great Illustrated Classics is a great way to go when introducing young readers to the great literature out there. The stories are timeless, the print is large and there is an illustration on every page next to a printed page. It makes it a real treat, instead of a chore, and kids may be more inclined to pick up the books with this easier read.
Peter Pan is a classic kid's adventure(although reading it again recently, I found I still get caught up in the story and the marvelous characters myself), that has all the elements needed for a fun and exciting read. You know the story, Peter, the boy who never wants to grow up(I know how he feels), takes Wendy, John, and Michael to Neverland, home of the lost boys, where no one every grows up and adventures with scary Pirates, Indians, Mermaids, and a brooding fairy named Tinkerbell, fill the pages. I love the part where the readers are asked to clap their hands if they believe in fairies, to help Tink recover from the poison she drinks to save Peter.
It's a book that is a great to read together and out loud. There is some violence, so may not be suited for very young children, but a classic that should be read by all who want to be taken away to Neverland...even if just for a little while.
It's a wonderfully adapted edition for kids and the illustrations are marvelous. For another must have illustrated classic for kids, try Frankenstein( ASIN:0866119817), see my review of that edition dated 11/28/06.
Adventure, Fantasy and a few life lessons to be learned with the read.
If you believe..clap your hands..don't let "Tink" die!....Laurie
Peter pan.......2006-11-15
Peter pan is a great book. It's about a boy that doesn't want to grow up.There is a little girl named Wendy and she has two littler brothers named John and Michle. The setting takes place in Neverland which is a beautiful world filled with fluffy clouds .Also there is a mean pirate named Hook and one of his hands is cut off and is a hook now.His hand is a hook because once when Peter pan and Hook were fighting Peter pan and it chopped off hooks and and he replaced it with a hook.Thats everything you need to know about Peter pan.
Why Classics are Classics.......2006-10-09
As one reads Peter Pan, one doesn't have to do much thinking to figure out why its story has achieved such worldwide acclaim. I had ridiculously high expectations of Mr. Barrie's imagination before purchasing this title, and he has fulfilled them completely.
Many parts of the story are nothing but nonsense, which I enjoy above all else. Mr. Darling, the head of the Darling family, commands his children to take their medicine after he hides the medicine he's supposed to take. He brags about how noble he is for drinking a medicine that tastes so much worse that theirs. Unfortunately for him, during his bragging his medicine is found, and the whole family agrees to take their respective medicines on the count of three. Sure enough, when three is reached, everyone except Mr. Darling takes their medicine, and Mr. Darling once again tries to hide his.
This kind of scenario is what I'd call Mark Twain nonsense. You can imagine it being true, even though it's quite high up on the ridiculous scale. Then there's what I would classify as over-the-top nonsense - AKA bull - which there is plenty of in Barrie's original story of Peter Pan. Going back to Mr. Darling, if we take a look at how he's doing near the end of the book, we find him going to and from work in a dog kennel. Ah, yes...grown men in pet taxis. What could be more fun than the "he-didn't-even-try-to-make-this-belivable" silliness of such a scene? To be honest, I don't know if I'd even read books if they all left out fun stuff like this.
Other silly parts of the book involve Wendy growing up a day quicker than most girls; the narrator claiming he hates Mrs. Darling only to call her his favorite character a few sentences later; the lost boys asking Wendy to change the characters her story just two sentences into it; the narrator using the phrase "woke into life" because Peter likes the word "woke" more than "wakened;" and my favorite, Captain Hook using a stale cake as a missle and then falling over it in the dark.
I believe the novel version of Peter Pan was written after the author had already established Peter Pan as a successful play. That may explain a lot about the colorful narration, which takes many, many literary liberties. We see everything from blatant narrator interference with the characters in the story to the shameless attempt at informing the audience that the narrator only chooses to make the events in the story happen a certain way so certain characters in the book won't be disappointed. Perhaps without these wacky (and maybe even insane) traits in the narration, there'd be no reason to read the book, since it would be no different from the play. After reading the Peter Pan novel though, I'd have to say it almost seems criminal to watch an adaptation of Peter Pan without any wacky narration.
Contrary to most adaptations of Peter Pan, the individual lost boys (of where there are six I believe) are actually more developed as characters than John or Michael Darling. Heck, at the end of the book they actually end up moving out of the Neverland to live with the Darlings and grow up to busy themselves in interesting professions.
I may not like the actual land of Neverland as much as I like the land of Oz, but Barrie's narration is unbeatable in my opinion. He could probably make a Jeopardy contestant's Friday night schedule sound exciting.
I believe Barrie has written another Peter Pan book as well, a prequel of sorts entitled "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens." It should be interesting, particuarly if it addresses what is contained in the dark dreams that haunt Peter throughout this book. Freud would have a field day with such dreams and the whole mother issue.
The only thing I expected to see in this book that I didn't see was "happy thoughts." That must have been a creation of Disney.
Darker than you'd think..........2006-09-06
Even though I knew that Disney movie and the various other adaptions out there were more sugar-coated than the original, this turned out to be a rather darker and more sinister book than I expected. Funny and charming and all that, too...but a little creepy in the way seemingly innocuous dreams sometimes are, when everything goes a little sideways and suddenly you aren't so sure everything is fine any more. Peter himself seems far less benevolent a soul than he is usually made out to be. In even the less flattering renditions of the story, he is usually only portrayed as childish, proud and a little selfish, but a stand-up sort of fellow nonetheless. The way I'm reading the book, he's practically a hedonist. The only thing that saves him is the fact that he has brief moments of chivalry and a memory like a goldfish. He and Dorian Gray should get together. Or maybe, on second thought, they shouldn't. Since that could lead to disturbing slashfic.
Seriously, this book made me sadder than I could ever have anticipated. Peter really is mercilessly heartless in his laughing, self-centered innocence. It really hurt my heart to think of Wendy and all her female descendants all giving their hearts' first love to Peter, one after another; the older, wiser women unable to save the girls from breaking their hearts over him in their turn.
Fantastic book, though, and a real treat for those who like to pick a book apart from a psychologist's point of view.
Beautiful classic version of this story.......2006-06-29
This version (Everymans Library Childrens Classics) of J.M. Barries Peter pan is a beautiful hard cover printing of the book. It has beautiful prints of Francis Donkin Bedfords (1864-1954) classic drawings, full page, in the book. The story is wonderful and the Illustrations are beautiful.

Description:
The possibility of adsorbing Pb(II) from solution using coir, a cheap lignocellulosic fibre, was assessed in a fixed bed column. The coir fibres were also chemically modified by covalent loading of a reactive dye, C.I. Reactive Orange 13, and used as adsorbent. Column adsorption studies were carried out at different initial Pb(II) concentrations and it was observed that the breakthrough time decreased with increase in the initial Pb(II) concentration. The column packed with dye loaded coir fibres was operated for longer duration than the one packed with unmodified coir fibres. The total Pb(II) adsorbed was also higher in a column packed with dye loaded coir fibres. The desorption level in the fixed bed column packed with coir fibres was of the order of 85%, whereas the one packed with dye loaded coir fibres was more than 90%. Both the columns were regenerated and used upto five cycles.

Description:
To date, the ethanol production industry in Canada is comprised mainly of small-scale plants producing ethanol primarily from agricultural crops as feedstocks. Research interests in the area of bio-ethanol production from organic waste materials emerged in the late 1980s. Significant advances in lignocellulosic material extraction and enzymatic hydrolysis have been reported in the last decade, however, continued research efforts are critical for the development of technically feasible and economically viable large-scale enzyme-based biomass-to-ethanol conversion processes which employ organic waste materials as alternative sources of feedstocks. The source of the lignocellulosic material, waste management practices and delignification procedures have a significant impact on the quantity and quality of delignified materials derived from these lignocellulosic feedstocks. The success of cellulose-to-ethanol conversion from lignocellulosic material feedstocks is generally a function of fibre pre-treatment, enzyme selection and operating conditions. These will differ depending on the source of the biomass feedstock. This paper illustrates the potential that Canada has to utilize its residual or waste biomass resources to provide a renewable and sustainable supply of bio-ethanol to help meet Canada's future energy needs. Canada could produce 5336millionL of bio-ethanol annually based on the recoverable fraction of crop residues generated in 2001. Based on bio-ethanol feasibility studies conducted on livestock manures and municipal biosolids and sludges, an estimated 6.22Mt/year of sugar could be produced from this waste biomass for subsequent fermentation to bio-ethanol. The long-term benefits of using waste residues as lignocellulosic feedstocks will be to introduce a sustainable solid waste management strategy for a number of lignocellulosic waste materials; contribute to the mitigation in greenhouse gases through sustained carbon and nutrient recycling; reduce the potential for water, air, and soil contamination associated with the land application of organic waste materials; and to broaden the feedstock source of raw materials for the bio-ethanol production industry.

Description:
Agricultural lignocellulosic fiber (rice straw)-waste tire particle composite boards were manufactured for use as insulation boards in construction, using the same method as that used in the wood-based panel industry. The manufacturing parameters were: a specific gravity of 0.8 and a rice straw content (10/90, 20/80 and 30/70 by wt.% of rice straw/waste tire particle). A commercial polyurethane adhesive for rubber was used as the composite binder. The water proof, water absorption and thickness swelling properties of the composite boards were better than those of wood particleboard. Furthermore, the flexibility and flexural properties of the composite boards were superior to those of other wood-based panel products. The composite boards also demonstrated good acoustical insulation, electrical insulation, anti-caustic and anti-rot properties. These boards can be used to prevent impact damage, are easily modifiable and are inexpensive. They are able to be used as a substitute for insulation boards and other flexural materials in construction.

Book Description
One of the best known fast computational algorithms is the fast Fourier transform method. Its efficiency is based mainly on the special structure of the discrete Fourier transform matrix. Recently, many other algorithms of this type were discovered, and the theory of structured matrices emerged.
This volume contains 22 survey and research papers devoted to a variety of theoretical and practical aspects of the design of fast algorithms for structured matrices and related issues. Included are several papers containing various affirmative and negative results in this direction. The theory of rational interpolation is one of the excellent sources providing intuition and methods to design fast algorithms. The volume contains several computational and theoretical papers on the topic. There are several papers on new applications of structured matrices, e.g., to the design of fast decoding algorithms, computing state-space realizations, relations to Lie algebras, unconstrained optimization, solving matrix equations, etc.
The book is suitable for mathematicians, engineers, and numerical analysts who design, study, and use fast computational algorithms based on the theory of structured matrices.

Book Description
In these original essays, seventeen celebrated authors give a private tour of the male psyche and discuss the journey to lasting love. Exploring aspects of themselves that they’ve never revealed before, they provide essential wisdom for men and women alike on the ritual of mating, and a look inside the hearts and minds of men who commit.
Customer Reviews:
Uncommitted.......2007-01-02
I'd have to say the stories are very uneven in their quality and approach. There's a variety of styles and some of the contributions are just downright boring. McManus, Seabrook, and a couple of others are the exception. Strangely, most of the seventeen authors all seem to be Jewish or Irish, but perhaps that just reflects the "big city" flavor that permeates almost all of the stories; that, and the fact that most take place in the 60s and 70s. I'm not so sure we can draw any significant conclusions in this decade from men whose experiences have Vietnam, Nixon, and the drug culture as a backdrop, and the authors themselves are not exactly household names. Spend you money elsewhere.
Goes Deep into Humor and Pathos.......2006-11-06
Seventeen stories document men's search for, discovery of, and commitment to lasting love. The best reveal personal experiences that provide insight into particular aspects of the human heart. Standouts include Rick Moody's "Companion Species," about his emotional evolution from lonely cat-hater to happily married cat lover; David Sedaris's "Old Faithful," a hilarious battle with a boil; and Colin Harrison's moving "Incision," recounting his father's illness and death. The book is a poignant reminder that indeed, men are from Earth (not Mars), and love is both mysterious and necessary.
A wonderful anthology of men who love and stay faithful.......2005-07-26
I received this book as a gift from my fiancee-to-be, and I can't think of reading I've enjoyed more this year. Committed is a wonderful collection of testimonials from men about how they fell in love, and how they have stayed in love, in some cases for decades. In this book, 17 men let you in on their journeys of marriage, parenthood, fidelity and dealing with death in the family. Anyone, man or woman, who believes all men cheat, stray and lack the ability to stay monogamous should read this book and rejoice. Committed is proof positive that there are men who truly love their wives, and through the ups and downs of marriage, work hard at making their relationships last.
This was terrific reading and a great gift I will TREASURE forever. Highly recommended, especially for a man who is on the brink of getting engaged, as I am.
