Book Description
Fire is a fearsome constant in the America West. Everyone who lives in the West confronts fire intimately or frighteningly at some time. As the author David J. Strohmaier notes, "Whether we have tended a campfire along Oregon's Deschutes River in March, engaged the advancing front of a Great Basin wildfire in the torrid heat of August, or watched fire settle into the subdued, smoldering leaf piles of October, all of our lives, to one degree or another, are bracketed by fire." In The Seasons of Fire, Strohmaier effectively blends nature writing, personal essay, and philosophical analysis as he deliberately crosses disciplinary boundaries. He discusses the "moral" dimensions of fire-not only whether fires are good, bad or indifferent phenomena, but also how fire, more generally understood, shapes meaning for human life. The consequences of discussing the moral side of fire speak directly to the contours of the human soul, and to our sense of our place on the land.! Strohmaier, a long-term firefighter himself, includes accurate and sometimes gut-wrenching descriptions of the firefighter's experience, including the philosophical wanderings and the downright boredom that may dominate between direct confrontations with the searing, terrifying flames.
Customer Reviews:
A masterful portrait.......2002-02-01
Dave Strohmaier masterfully paints us a portrait of wildfire in the West, drawing from a palette of sensitivity to the earth, gritty practical experience, humor, and skilled writing craft. He calls attention to the beauty of many elements of nature we take for granted, its paradoxes, and draws complex associations between these and wildfire. This book is not a primer on how wildfires are fought. It is a loving and thorough philosophical exploration of the meaning of fire, nature, and humanity.
Hot Damn!.......2001-11-06
Seasons of Fire by David J. Strohmaier is a superbly written, artistic, and thought-provoking novel on humankind's relationship to fire. Like the author, I too have "engaged" the fires of summer, which stirred deep, ontological questions about human evolution's debt to fire. The author expresses such ideas in a free-flowing narrative that bursts with imagery. Deep yet accesible (I will admit to using the dictionary at least once every 50 pages, but I admire an author who can skillfully use words that I should know, but don't).
To ape the vernacular of Hollywood producers, "it's like Edward Abbey meets Garrison Keillor!" David J. Strohmaier provides beatific explorations of philosophical questions with a smooth, down-home panache. I have never had the pleasure of attacking a fire with gunny sacks, but the author makes me wish I had:
"There is pleasure in completing little tasks--sweating your way up a hill to the flank of a fire under the sun and open sky of mid-July, then, in the company of several others, swatting out flames until either you smother all movement, or cool, moist night air tucks the fire in for the evening. This genuine satisfaction does not abdicate you from the responsibility of asking why you are doing what you are doing, and why it is meaningful. And of all the seasons of the year, summer, the summer of fire, is when these questions are cured."
Descriptions of a bygone Halloween when the author dressed as Satan himself, dancing around a fire, made me laugh out loud. A truly provocative and enjoyable book. I look forward to his next work.
The Seasons of Fire : Reflections on Fire in the West.......2001-09-26
Strohmaier captures the essense of what calls people from all walks of life to a world of flames and wild places.
As a veteran wildland firefighter for over 24 years,
it was a joy to read about the spirit that exist within every wildland firefighter. If you want to understand the
essentials of what motivates wildland firefighters, read this book.

Must read for anyone considering cruising or just dreaming about it!.......2006-08-06
This is a must read for anyone considering the cruising lifestyle or even if you just own a sailboat OR even if you dream of the lifestyle. The concise and objective information, often tied to an experience the author actually had, makes the content much more readable. The author is a sailor and cruised and lived on his boat for something like 13 years. One learns many lessons about how to do things on a boat in 13 years! Not only are these "tips and tricks", some can be critical, life saving tasks. The author's credibility is further noted by the fact that he owned and operated a boat building company. Take your time, and don't necessarily go chapter by chapter. Read what interests you.

Book Description
Along with Wit, Charm, Health, and Courage, Princess Amy of Phantasmorania receives a special fairy christening gift: Ordinariness. Unlike her six beautiful sisters, she has brown hair and freckles, and would rather have adventures than play the harp, embroider tapestries . . . or become a Queen. When her royal parents try to marry her off, Amy runs away and, because she's so ordinary, easily becomes the fourteenth assistant kitchen maid at a neighboring palace. And there . . . much to everyone's surprise . . . she meets a prince just as ordinary (and special) as she is!
"This delightful fairy tale is sure to please young romantics . . . Neither Kaye's princess nor her book should be considered ordinary." (School Library Journal)
Customer Reviews:
Every child should read this book.......2007-08-31
This book emphasises that there are other virtues and qualities aside from aesthetics. It is difficult to describe. The book teaches that beings ones true self is what matters most and goes beyond valueing superficial signs of worth.
A Fairytale you'll want your kids to read.......2007-08-25
I wish I had this book when I was a child instead of filling my head with the traditional fairytales. I think we try to hard to live up to the impossible standards that these fairytales represent and when real life hits, we feel like a failure for not being able to fulfill them. Truly a great book to read to your child and one that has a little something for us as well.
Ha!.......2007-08-11
When I was a kid, this story was printed as a serial in Cricket magazine. Every week I would wait with baited breath for the next installment to come out, and I carefully cut each chapter out and saved them all in a folder, which I still have to this day! I never knew that it was actually a book! I am absolutely thrilled. The illustrations are absolutely stunning. I can't wait to see them in a bound book, and not on a series of worn out and stained magazine pages!
Short and Sweet.......2007-07-13
Kaye's The Ordinary Princess is a smart short book that breaks away from the "traditional" framework of the "typical princess". Princess Amy, the seventh in a line of blonde princesses, is given the gift of mediocrity by the Fairy Crustaccea (slightly parodying the Sleeping Beauty plotline). The gift of being ordinary soon develops Amy into an individual that people are more able to relate to than the frail, delicate princesses that the other sisters become. Thus the adventures of ordinary princess ensue, resulting in love, friendship, and happiness of an extraordinary degree.
the advantages of being ordinary.......2007-05-15
This is an absolutely delightful tale of a princess who is blessed in her infancy with the gift of being ordinary. All of her older sisters are perfect princesses with golden hair, blue eyes and rose petal complexions, whose only time outside is to play with a golden ball. The book is full of witty lines and the hilarious adventures of being ordinary in an idealized world.

Pamela Morsi writes romance directly from the heart! Set in turn-of-the-century Texas, King Calhoun is a wildcatter with big dreams. His daughter, Princess, is just ordinary; not pretty, not smart, she's just a good-hearted woman with a whole lot of spunk. Quite a romantic, Princess falls in love at first sight with Tom Walker, a handsome roughrider. Tom dreams of wealth. If he can't earn it, he's not averse to marrying for it. He poses as a wealthy easterner to woo Princess, but finds--to his dismay--that he has fallen for her. When King and Princess learn of his betrayal, Tom is forced to choose what is of real value.
Book Description
Love and Oklahoma oil...
Brash and efficient, yet an incurable romantic, Princess "Cessy" Calhoun firmly believes in love at first sight. But at twenty-four she has never been smitten -- until a sophisticated gentleman named "Gerald" sweeps her off her feet. For her newfound romance Cessy will give up anything -- even her considerable fortune.
A handsome and rootless Rough Rider with a past and a crazy dream of "black gold," Tom Walker needed money and Cessy was swimming in it. So he created arefined alter ego to woo the rich man's daughter.
But Cessy's enthusiastic spirit is infectious. And from the ruins of his get-nich-quick scheme, Tom sees her in an appealing new light. But though he nowyearns for this remarkable stranger, Cessy's heart will never truly be his-not as long as the lady "Gerald" married loves a lie.
Customer Reviews:
Realistic heroine.......2002-03-20
Heroine: near-sighted, classically pear-shaped
Plain but passionate Princess Calhoun is swept off her feet when a handsome Eastern gentleman flirts with her at the annual fourth of July bash thrown by her father, "Royal Oil" baron King Calhoun.
Sexy Tom Walker is walking a fine line working days in King Calhoun's oil fields as "Toolie Tom," and spending his nights wooing the boss's daughter as "Gerald," the son of a wealthy family from back East.
Cessy chases down her dreams of being honestly loved for the woman she is on the inside, while Tom chases down the dream of having more money than he could ever hope to spend. The real test comes when the attraction and tenuous bond these two created during their courtship has to withstand the loss of her oil money and the revelation of his true background.
What worked for me:
Cessy seemed very real to me; she was a passionate and sweet lady who was overlooked by potential suitors because she wasn't a knock-out and had a tendency towards bossiness. And despite the fact that Tom was a gold-digger, I didn't dislike him for it. He never once had plans to leave Cessy or set up himself up with a mistress. He intended all along to be the best of husbands to her.
There was not one secondary romance in this story, but two! I do wonder if Cessy could actually have had a friend like Muna, a girl of Syrian descent, in the early 1900's. Despite being a bit P.C. this romance did add some humor to the story, and I enjoyed Muna and her fiance immensely. I also liked the neat and tidy epilogue at the end which ties Muna and Cessy together as sisters by law and not just spirit. :^) The other romance, which flourished between Cessy's father and a local madam, didn't do as much for me but was still sweet in its own way.
What didn't work for me:
King Calhoun had a daughter named Princess, and a girlfriend named Queenie. I was terribly disappointed that Tom's name didn't turn out to be Duke. *L*
Overall:
I don't generally go for American or Western settings, but I enjoyed this sweet and sexy story anyway. The characters were fun, and it was a nice twist on the Regency fortune-hunter stories I have read. :^)
Slow in spots, very gentle........2000-08-20
Tom Walker, orphan from the Indian School, wanted to be wealthy, like some of his friends in the Rough Riders. When he sees tall, bespectacled, bossy Princess Calhoun, daughter of oilman King Calhoun, Tom changes himself into Gerald Crane, adventurous Eastern millionaire's son. He soon falls in love with Cessy, but doesn't know how to tell her the truth, even after they marry.
Gentle and slow, Morsi has another lovely tale with interesting characters. I found the story a bit too long, but this was one of her earlier books. The pacing is a little erratic, but Princess and Tom are worth the patience.
enjoyable.......1998-11-07
I liked this book, but not quite as much as some of her others, like SEALED WITH A KISS. It was so well written that I felt embarassed for Tom many times. It was as though I was there hiding. Read this, but read some of her other books too.
Morsi tells a heart-warming story about "real" people........1997-06-12
Like no other author, Pamela Morsi can take a subject I have absolutely no interest in (fish, rice, moonshine) and use it as a backdrop for a beautiful story. No Ordinary Princess takes place at the start of the midwestern oil boom in 1907, just prior to Oklahoma statehood.
Princess Calhoun and Tom Walker are two real people who occasionally do stupid things and for that they are all the more endearing to the reader. Illusions are shattered, lies are exposed and relationships are nearly destroyed, but love is cord that binds this story together. The secondary characters are as integral to the plot as the hero and heroine. They bring humor to the story and provide a sense of community.
Although I can't say the story is as riveting as Morsi's previous books, it is well written and the pages kept turning until the impossible situation was resolved. As always, Morsi gives us a glimpse of these characters in the future that lets you rest easy as you turn the last page, knowing that everything will be all right.
All in all, No Ordinary Princess is a good way to start the summer. It's a nice, evenly paced, heart warming book that fits nicely into the beach tote next to the sunscreen

Delightfully Liz.......2004-05-26
If you're a fan of Liz Fielding's writing than you'll enjoy this one a lot. I usually like her 'boy next door' ordinary heroes and heroines, but this 'ordinary' princess plays along the same line. A satisfying read and a well-done happy ending. From engagement, to wedding, to honeymoon. She sends the happily-ever-after home and leaves you with a smile.

Book Description
In a rare, over-the-shoulder perspective of a leading scientist's own breakthroughs, Clay Swelling and Colloid Stability puts emphasis on two significant paradigm shifts in colloid science that explain particle interactions for charged plates, stacks, suspensions, and pastes as well as spherical colloids. Martin Smalley first discusses the replacement of the DLVO theory with the Coulombic Attraction Theory to explain the existence, extent, and properties of the two-phase region of colloid stability. Using the n-butylammonium vermiculite system as his model clay system, the author clarifies the flaws of conventional theories and presents the experimental details that form the basis of his new theories. He provides rigorous derivations that place the new electrical theory for charged colloids on a firm foundation in statistical mechanics. The author illustrates why a new, quantitative bridging flocculation model for polymer-stabilized colloids must replace the depletion flocculation model. Smalley also examines the discovery of the "dressed macroion" structure of clay plates in solution, the structure of a bridging polymer, and the distribution of polymer segments, counterions, and water molecules in the interlayer region. Based on the author's own research and 36 publications in the field, Clay Swelling and Colloid Stability is a self-contained and intellectually satisfying account of the revolutionary process leading to a universally sound, and increasingly applicable, theory of colloid stability.

Book Description
This book presents the main tools for aggregation of information given by several members of a group or expressed in multiple criteria, and for fusion of data provided by several sources. It focuses on the case where the availability knowledge is imperfect, which means that uncertainty and/or imprecision must be taken into account. The book contains both theoretical and applied studies of aggregation and fusion methods in the main frameworks: probability theory, evidence theory, fuzzy set and possibility theory. The latter is more developed because it allows to manage both imprecise and uncertain knowledge. Applications to decision-making, image processing, control and classification are described.
Book Description
Schoolteacher Barbara Covett has known none but the most solitary of lifestyles until Sheba Hart joins St. George's. Starting by sharing lunches, then family events, the new art teacher draws Barbara into a touching confidence. Unbeknownst to their colleagues, however, another relationship blossoms meanwhile: Sheba has begun a passionate affair with an underage male student. When the details come to light and Sheba falls prey to the inevitable media circus, Barbara decides to write an account in her friend's defense-revealing not only Sheba's secrets but her own.
Customer Reviews:
POSITIVELY BRILLIANT..........2007-08-26
This is simply a delicious book. It looks deep into the human heart, and what it discovers will keep the reader turning its pages. The narrator of the story is Barbara Covett, an unmarried school teacher in her sixties, the type who has never married, is set in her ways and opinions, and lives with her cat, to which she is devoted. She has a waspish, intense personality and is a highly intelligent, no nonsense sort of person who does not suffer fools gladly. She teaches at St. George's comprehensive school in London.
When a married pottery teacher with the improbable name of Bathsheba Hart joins the faculty, Barbara's interest is peaked by this seemingly fey, wispy and elegantly lean woman with a penchant for bohemian style clothing. Sheba (as she likes to be called) is as attractive as Barbara is unattractive. Sheba is also, as all soon discover, an ineffectual teacher unable to maintain discipline in her classroom. Still, with her posh accent, easy and relaxed, pleasant personality, she soon becomes a person of interest to those around her, including some of her students.
In fact, just as Sheba and Barbara start to become friends, Sheba is also embarking upon another relationship, one that is illicit, as it is with one of her students, fifteen year old Steven Connolly. It is, however, through Barbara's eyes that the affair unfolds, and in painting a picture of the events, she is, at the same time, painting a psychological portrait of both herself and Sheba, revealing the obsessive symbiosis that binds this unlikely pair in erstwhile friendship.
The author has created a masterful, exceedingly well-written novel, one that is thematically rich and complex. The author does this with a deft touch, as well as with humor. The characters are vividly drawn and the book is well-plotted, making for an immensely readable novel that the reader will find difficult to put down until the very last page is turned. Bravo!
Amazing book.......2007-08-23
This author is has such a gift for writing. I wasn't interested in the subject matter at all but then I couldn't put it down. Her style just flows and I can't wait until she writes another one.
The Class War Wages On.......2007-07-02
I don't know what to make of this beautifully written book. The plot device, stated clearly at the beginning, is that Sheba has told Barbara her story so many times and in so many different ways, that Barbara knows it better than she does (reminding me of Affliction, a story told by the brother of the main character).
The prose reminds me of Anita Brookner, but instead of taking the side of the hapless victim, we hear the voice of the predator for once.
My only question, is why Barbara, aptly named an incubus by Sheba's husband Richard, would want Sheba after sucking all of the juices out of her?
Why not go after fresher meat?
Entertaining.......2007-05-26
I like this book. It was purely entertaining. The author did not make any pretensions of trying to teach her readers anything. It just felt like someone was simply writing about some really good gossip.
Talk about a teacher's pet.......2007-04-10
As a high school teacher, I found this tale to be quite disturbing; it's a topic that many reviewers have already explored and critiqued, along with the motives of Sheba and Barbara. Beyond that, one must address Zoe Heller's writing style, which is simply intriguing. Her phrasing and word choice reveal that she truly has a gift with language. Her writing is exquisite and enticing through her unusual juxtapositions, imagery, and analogies. I have not seen the film, but can only imagine hearing Judi Dench speaking such mesmeric lines.
Book Description
Shortlisted for the Booker Prize and now a major motion picture from Fox Searchlight starring Cate Blanchett and Judi Dench
Schoolteacher Barbara Covett has led a solitary life until Sheba Hart, the new art teacher at St. George's, befriends her. But even as their relationship develops, so too does another: Sheba has begun an illicit affair with an underage male student. When the scandal turns into a media circus, Barbara decides to write an account in her friend's defense --and ends up revealing not only Sheba's secrets, but also her own.
Customer Reviews:
See Film then Read Book.......2007-06-12
I saw the film two weeks ago and learned that it was an adaptation of this novel. The film was so good that I really had to read the book because the book usually has more insight into the characters. But this was not the case with this novel. The novel was good but left you with a feeling of incompleteness. The ending had to many dangling ends. The book did do a better job of defining Sheba than the film did and the novel was really much different in content that to see the film and to read the book are two different experiences. So, if you saw the film, by all means read this book.
Excellent reading.......2007-06-01
Delicious writing - very involving. I read it in two evenings. It makes you want to read the rest of her work.
I'm a bloke and I liked it.......2007-06-01
I ordered this book on the basis of its award nomination, having no idea of its subject matter. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, and it won't be for those who like murder mysteries or thrillers - but I liked it from the beginning and by the end, I loved it. Zoe Heller has a real talent for character development, and manages to portray the self-denied loneliness of a sixty-something spinster/schoolteacher in a sensitive and non-condescending manner yet with a good deal of tragic humour as well. I must have completed two-thirds of the book before I realised that the central character wasn't the woman at the heart of the scandal, but her note-maker and grateful friend who tells the story itself. The personalities of both women are artfully and painstakingly developed, along with their working colleagues and families, and for this reason I strongly recommend Notes on a Scandal as an education for other writers on how to tell a story with characters who readers can totally believe in. An astute observation on the trials and tribulations of the lonely, this book deserves its prize nomination and gets my strong recommendation.
Smashing.......2007-05-13
Zoe Heller's first person narrative is simply the best of its kind. A smooth, richly textured, compelling read. Not since Michael Chabon's 'Wonder Boys' has there been such a highly entertaining and genuinely engrossing literary novel. Heller's command of the English language is unparalleled.
Very educational.......2007-03-05
I had some qualms about enjoying this because we are invited to laugh at, and to disapprove of, a villain, Barbara Covett, who suffers the stigmas of being elderly, female and unmarried. She is the first person narrator, what is known in the writing business as an unreliable narrator. She describes her attraction to Sheba, who is a fellow teacher in a chaotic English comprehensive (ages 11 to 18 year) school and who is having an affair with a fifteen year old male pupil. Although she is often made to sound ridiculous and unkind, Barbara Covett is given some good lines. When she acidly demolishes the pretensions and double-talk of unrealistic school administrators we (unless we are school administrators) want to stand up and cheer. Her struggles to comfort her dying cat, and her memories of her traumatic childhood are poignant. She takes over and manipulates the naïve impulsive Sheba and is responsible for her exposure and downfall. Neither of the pair is aware of any wrongdoing. It would be great book to give to anyone you wanted to dissuade from a career in teaching.

... the thing about most of these "how to pick up women" books written by women is that it's usually written from the viewpoint that they're the ho and you're the trick, designed to keep them firmly in the driver's seat while taking you for a ride through Springsteen's "tunnel of love"... just like a drug dealer will toss you some free merchandise in order to get you hooked before bleeding you dry, some women deal in sex as the drug to get you hooked on before attempting to manipulate and entrap you into the big "M" if you want to keep sampling the goodies... before you know it, you're the befuddled groom standing at the altar with the bride who's beaming as though she'd just won the lottery... until eventually, she's filing for divorce and taking you to the cleaners before moving on to the next sucker who lets himself be manipulated by the head that's in his pants... this is a game that's played by many North American women and one that smart guys are getting wise to, which is probably why I'm seeing more and more North American men hooking up with foreign women, particularly Orientals.
Women are always complaining that men are commitment-phobic, but it wasn't always that way... it used to be that marriage was a sweet deal for a guy, and most would get married shortly after high school, but what happened is that the old school guys (our fathers and grandfathers) screwed that up royally by mistreating and abusing the women of their generation (our mothers and grandmothers)... this begat the women's liberation movement, which eventually begat the de-masculinization of the American male - think of all the TV sitcoms portraying supplicating wimps like David Schwimmer (Friends), Paul Reiser (Mad About You) and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) as being shining examples of the kind of guy that your everyday, sex-in-the-city ballbreaker considers desirable. Man, have we ever fallen a long way down since the days of John Wayne, James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart!
My point is, if you're anything like the guys mentioned above, keep reading this type of drivel and you may eventually find yourself married with someone who's perfectly content to run your life for you. She'll make all the choices regarding what you'll wear, what you'll watch on TV, who you'll be socializing with (her friends and relatives, not yours), what kind of vehicle you'll drive, where you'll live, etc... if you're happy with that, maybe you need the type of woman who wears the pants around the house.
If you're not that type of guy, nor wish to be, you're better off reading something along the lines of "The Layguide", "The Machiavellian's Guide To Womanizing", "MACK Tactics" or my personal favourite with the unprintable title authored by Dan Indante and Karl Marks.
To all the single guys out there, I wish you luck in finding the right woman... and beware of venomous spiders trying to ensnare you into their web!
One of the best dating books I've read.......2004-07-24
This book is concise and entertaining. As a dating veteran, Molly tells dating stories from her own and her friend's experiences. She will explains what goes through a woman's mind during dating. She then provides what a guy must do to have success with that woman. This is one of the best dating books I've read, a must read for every guy out there.
A "must-read" for today's single man.......2004-03-14
Funny, the thing that a previous, critical reader had a problem with -- the book's size -- is precisely what I found so charming about it. For its small size (reflected in an appropriately affordable price), it's jam-packed with some pretty high-concentrate guidance. Every sentence is crammed with information and/or insight. Who needs another Bible-sized treatise on dating? Leave the Ivory-Tower psycho-babble to the so-called experts. Molly cuts to the chase. (Clearly, she knows all about men's short attention spans -- you'll roar with laughter at where she recommends men read it... can ya guess?)
Though you may initially devour it quickly, don't be surprised to find yourself going back for a refresher -- over and over again. While it's all very well thought-out, the effort and energy that clearly must have gone into writing this book is camouflaged by Molly's delightful, breezy, easy-to-read style. Plus, not only is it all totally real-world... it's HILARIOUS, right from the opening scene. If you don't catch yourself snickering on almost every page... well, maybe you need more help than this tiny tome can offer!
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting Ms. Ring when I happened to walk into a local book-signing -- which is how I found out about the book. She certainly seems every bit as genuine in person as you'd expect from reading about her single life. (If only the rest of us could muster such a good-sported sense of humor about our own dating debacles....)
Thanks for sharing, Molly -- on behalf of men everywhere!
Very encouraging and valuable.......2004-03-11
Being a somewhat shy kind of person, I find that I'm attracted not only to women, but to books about dating women. Of the half dozen or so such books I've read, this one was two things: the most fun and the most insightful. I don't have time to write an article for the Review of Books here, but some observations: most importantly, the woman who wrote this pointed out and explained things I never thought of or never would have realized, so much so that I feel like I've had more experience dating than I actually do. She's very encouraging and fun, and explained things well, giving just enough examples to make everything crystal clear. Unlike with the other books I've read, I got the feeling that this woman is on the man's side, that she's authentically, personally interested in helping men do better. She's like a really smart (and hilarious) sister-I-never-had who's been through the whole dating thing and is now letting me in on how a real woman thinks, what she wants, and how she reacts to things. Plus, I was either smiling or laughing out loud the whole way through. I read it twice. Changed my whole perspective permanently. I feel braver now and ready to actually go out there and do what a guy's supposed to do. I tried to find out if she's written anything else but no such luck. Five stars.
Pass It On.......2004-03-05
An accurate account of dating life from a woman's perspective. These types of things have happened to me too, but, I'm not nearly the storyteller that Ms. Ring is. A witty, charming, honest, entertaining and fun expose on dating. A "How-To" book for men - pass it on to your sons, brothers, male friends, nephews - save them from making the same mistakes.
