The best book written about Golden Retrievers ever!!!.......2006-06-17
The best book ever written about Golden Retrievers!!!
This lady is a real professional. She employs world class specialists from both sides of Atlantic. It is the "must read" book especially for Americans. There are a lot of beautiful pictures and this is a great help for people to see how the Golden Retriever should look like. I just hope this book will get translated into other languages too. In the last 20 years this fabulous breed has spread incredibly in many countries even not covered in this book. In this case this book is a little behind but this cannot be hold against the book. This is a nature of all the books. Additionally one has to wait till changes will have more permanent character. I am sure that in the next edition of this book the author will try to update this. I just hope that all my clients will read this book prior to a puppy buying decision. This would save me a lot of time and it will set them on the right track. This would be better for the breed, for the dog owners and ultimately best for their dogs. What else can I say - I love Goldens and I love this book!
Great Book.......2005-07-30
This book is really great. It covered everything I wanted to know about my new golden puppy and the pictures are awesome. I recommend this to anyone.
Can't Get a Better Book About Goldens.......2003-11-21
This book is absolutely fabulous -- you can't get a better book about Goldens. For the beginner, it has all the information in there about how to housebreak him and when to take him to the vet, but it also has the Golden only type stuff, like how to teach puppies not to be afraid to swim. But it is really best for the expert, because there are so many photos of great Goldens and so many placed next to each other -- a British next to an American -- to show the differences in type. This is a really big book with tons of photos and easy to read and really tells you everytthing you need to know. It is interesting to see how the two coutnries diverged in their idea of what the structure should be. It was written by half British writers and half American and oh boy what that committee must have been like!
Content goes beyond basic "how to shampoo" and "how to feed".......1999-02-10
Excellent reference on correct structure of the Golden. Interesting documentation of similarities and differences of standards between the American Kennel Club and the Kennel Club of Britain. Great history about the successful kennels and which ones developed which lines and how the foundations of the breed developed in the UK, North America, Canada and the rest of the world.

1redwingnut.......2007-01-30
Just bought my third golden retriever, and was STILL amazed at how much I enjoyed the absolutely beautiful photography in this book. My brother got it for my Father for Christmas, and I liked it so much I bought one for myself the next day. Amusing stories to read about different goldens, too, but I had not seen a golden retriever book with such a wonderful collection of pictures on almost every page before. Definitely a keeper!!
Light entertainment..........2006-09-01
This is a very light book with some very nice and "cute" photographs. Good for the coffeetable or bathroom.
Great Book!.......2006-02-02
Love of Goldens has cute stories and some of the best golden photos that I've ever seen! The photos are absolutely beautiful and there's a TON of them!! It's worth it to buy this book even if only to look at the pictures.
i love goldies........2004-09-04
i think that if you like goldies and think they are so sweet, then buy this book!! it has stories about goldies, and it has the history of goldies, and such CUTE pictures. oh, by the way, i have a goldie myself, her name is "violet" she is the cutest, sweetest, smartest, most affectionate little doggy.
OMG! A Golden book!.......2003-03-13
Well, as the title tells you, this book is a goldne book, and a golden's book. This was the first item that i bought from amazon.com and it is the reason why I contunie on buying things. Basicly, it is one of the best books I own.
For the first thing, it includes first quality golden retriever photos, very cute! You witness the miracles of goldens throughout this book.
HOWEVER!, this book DOES NOT include how to take care of your beatiful golden. You may need another book to guide you and help you with the topics of health, training and history of golden retrievers.
I can call this book a "reference" book, it is really valuable and a must-own for both poeple who own goldens and who don't. If you like photography and animals, and art-- this book is for you.

old, outdated.......2002-12-11
this really isn't too useful since travelling in Yemen now has changed significantly. one can tell that it was originally written quite well and written will solutions and approaches to many of the annoyances particular to Yemen in mind. i didn't find a single thing mentioned in this book to be up to date either. the only redeeming feature was the extras on Yemeni culture, history, architecture, etc. maps are mediocre.

Book Description
A pirate at heart, unlikely heroine Jacky Faber returns to the sea in a truly swashbuckling tale filled with good humor, wit, and courage.
After leaving the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston--under dire circumstances, of course--she boards a whaling ship bound for London, where she hopes to find her beloved Jaimy. But things don't go as planned, and soon Jacky is off on a wild misadventure at sea. She thwarts the lecherous advances of a crazy captain, rallies the sailors to her side, and ultimately gains command of a ship in His Majesty's Royal Navy. But Jacky's adventures don't end there. . . .
Customer Reviews:
crazy good!.......2007-09-11
The best one yet! Jacky Faber gets herself into the craziest most exciting adventures in this one. I loved it!
The Best Book Yet.......2007-08-31
This novel is the best that i have read so far.
When i first read the Curse of the Blue Tatto, I thought it was going to be one of those books where you had to put it down every 5 seconds so you don't die from boredom. But it was just the oppsite and for the Jolly Roger one it was even better. It had action through out the book and was really interesting. I especially liked the part where they had the big war. It was kind of like the last part of the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean 3' but better. The English slangs were sometimes annoying but it really gave me an idea of how Jacky talked.
I have to say this on had a lot of adult content thingys then the other ones but oh well it's still good
-Andrew Yoo
Fresh and engaging 5-star young adult novel.......2007-08-07
In this the latest installment (Book III) in the Jacky Faber adventures, young and impetuous Jacky sails back to England after leaving the Lawson Peabody School for Young Girls in Boston.
Jacky is now in search of her beloved Jaimy, but when she shows up at his house, his insufferable mother turns her away. Later on, she finds an ingenious way to meet him at the races by dressing up as a boy. To her dismay, she finds him holding hands with another girl. Impulsive and passionate as always, she assumes the worst and storms out of the place without asking an explanation, only to fall into the hands of kidnappers. When she opens her eyes, she finds herself aboard a ship far from the coast.
But the worse happens when her kidnappers realize the inevitable--she's a girl! Now Jacky has to prove herself as an accomplished sailor, keep the filthy captain away from her, and earn the respect of her fellow mates. Of course, her dilemma doesn't end here, for soon enough she's mistaken for a pirate and the authorities put a price on her head!
This is a book that will be utterly enjoyed by young fans of pirate adventure stories. Non-stop action and thrills fill the plot, but what really stands out is the well-drawn, utterly adorable character of the sensitive, yet headstrong teenaged protagonist, Jacky Faber. Her interaction with other characters and sharp wit are a delight to follow.
L.A. Meyer has an unusual, original style that is fresh and engaging. The author uses the present tense to tell the story; since it is a historical novel, I would have preferred the past tense, but this is purely a personal choice. Also, at times the technical descriptions of Jacky as she handles the ship can be a bit tedious, though I suppose this can be appealing to hardcore fans of pirate stories.
The ending leaves at a crucial point, leaving the story unfinished and readers begging for more.
Armchair Interviews says: The book can stand on its own in spite of being the third one in the series.
A rollicking good time!.......2007-07-26
This is really great reading! I couldn't put it down and both my kids and I think that it may be the best so far, although Bloody Jack was pretty entertaining too! I especially loved the first half of the book- her character really shone. It was neat too to see her return to Cheapside and give back to those whom she had left so abruptly. The big battle was extremely well written. As one of the reviews commented, this isn't for the fainthearted- some of the images particularly in the Captain's cabin are disturbing but once again, Meyer had all three of us on the edge of our seats. Well done!!
Why Can't I Put this Book Down???.......2007-06-30
That was my thought as I read this book when I really should have been working on a very important project. It was well worth it though!
I started with The Curse of the Blue Tattoo less than a full 12 months ago and found this in a library and knew it had to be as good and unbelievably refreshing as the previous book. And, even though you're given the plot on the bookflap and you can guess the expected outcomes of some things being so easy to do, you still get surprised, delightfully. I reccommend the full series or what there is of it at the moment.
*ALSO, if you are unfamiliar with Cockney or British slang, it may be a tad bit difficult to understand so I suggest looking up a word or two if you absolutely don't understand, which is highly unlikely.
*ONE more thing! If you feel too young or are squeemish when it comes to almost-adult content, this book has that! Just as a warning! You'll miss out on some fabulous text though!
* These factors are evident in all the books.

Book Description
In recent times there has been an explosive expansion of new imaging methodologies that are capable of visualizing specific populations of cells and molecular events in vivo. Vital imaging enhances our ability to study animal models of human development and disease, such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. Furthermore, non-invasive imaging may ultimately be useful for monitoring new generations of clinical molecular and cellular therapeutics, such as those utilizing viral vectors and stem cells. These new capabilities have been facilitated by the development of new imaging probes or reagents that target specific cell types, are chemically responsive to physiology, or are responsive to the presence of specific molecules, such as nucleic acids or enzymes.
This volume provides an introduction to some of the most exciting methods and applications of emerging non-invasive imaging technologies using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), and various biophotonic approaches. Highlighted, are recent developments in reagent design that impart unique abilities to these imaging modalities to elucidate biological processes in vivo.
* Includes 9 chapters by expert researchers in the field of imaging
* Introduces new methods and applications of non-invasive imaging technologies
* Covers ermerging topics in imaging such as in vivo cell cancer cells, imaging of autoimmune diseases, and maganetic resonance imaging

Book Description
Self-assembly monolayer (SAM) structures of lipids and macromolecules have been found to play an important role in many industrial and biological phenomena. This book describes two procedures, namely the STM and AFM, that are used to study SAMs at solid surfaces. K.S. Birdi examines the SAMs at both liquid and solid surfaces by using the Langmuir monolayer method. This book is intended for researchers, academics and professionals.

Description:
Investigations of inorganic oligomers are important in both chemistry and physiology. In this contribution, we propose a laser induced light scattering imaging (LSI) and a total internal reflected light scattering imaging (TIR-LSI) technique, and apply them to characterize the interactions of inorganic oligomers with biopolymer in aqueous phase and at liquid/liquid interface, respectively. In aqueous medium, synthetic chromium(III) hydrolytic oligomers (CrHO) react with DNA, and the resultant binary could be extracted into the H"2O/CCl"4 interface in the presence of triocyctyl phosphine oxide (TOPO), forming a DNA-CrHO-TOPO ternary amphipathic complex at the interface with the associate constant of 1.32x10^3mol^-^1dm^4 for a given 1.0x10^-^4moll^-^1 TOPO. Under the excitation of a 441-nm He-Cd laser light beam, the resultant light scattering and total internal reflected light scattering (TIR-LS) signals of the formed binary in aqueous phase and ternary at liquid/liquid interface could be easily captured using a common microscope coupled with a CCD camera. By digitally analyzing the CCD captures, we demonstrate that aggregations of the CrHO-DNA binary in aqueous phase and DNA-CrHO-TOPO ternary at liquid/liquid interface have occurred, respectively.

Book Description
The first five novels of Henry James, presented complete in this volume, feature sparkling dialogue, masterfully timed suspense, and the romance of youthful artistic aspirations. The contrast between Europe and America, which gives a special dimension to all of James's cultural observations, is brilliantly deployed in these early works. "Watch and Ward," written when James was 28, is a Bostonian version of the Pygmalion story. In "Roderick Hudson," a headstrong and gifted young American sculptor loses his way among the temptations of Italy. "The American" was written in Paris and dramatizes a confrontation between the expatriate culture of American tourists and the protected world behind the barriers of old families and traditions. "The Europeans," by contrast, places two visiting European cousins in a pristine and conservative New England village. The little-known and charming "Confidence" is a light drawing-room comedy about the romantic entanglements of America! ns traveling through Europe.
Customer Reviews:
Some great early novels by Henry James.......2001-04-26
This book has five complete novels for one comparatively low price! "Watch and Ward," is a novel that James himself preferred to ignore as a youthful indiscretion, but I found it a vastly entertaining and suspenseful love story. Roderick Hudson is a compelling cautionary tale. The American is a gripping story that cries out for a movie version (in my fantasy Peter Weir would direct, and it might star Tom Cruise and Winona Ryder, although I'm sure many others would do just as well). This novel has love, a duel, a frightful skeleton in the closet, blackmail, Carmelite nuns, etc. The ending should be adjusted along the lines of the play version that James later wrote. The Europeans did not grab me, but Confidence is a delightful novel with something James later tended to avoid--a happy ending. This collection provides a lot of great novelistic entertainment for the buck. The way the Library of America does it is that for one they are non-profit, and second they use top quality thin acid-free paper, which allows them to fit five books into the space of something slightly larger than one thick paperback. The book even has a silky little bookmark to hold your place. Classy!
Book Description
The brilliant Roman winter came round again, and Rowland enjoyed it, in a certain way, more deeply than before. He grew at last to feel that sense of equal possession, of intellectual nearness, which it belongs to the peculiar magic of the ancient city to infuse into minds of a cast that she never would have produced. He became passionately, unreasoningly fond of all Roman sights and sensations.

Customer Reviews:
The most readable thing James has written.......2004-01-22
I've always admired Henry James' vision. His exploration of character's desires, intriguing premises, and occasionally brilliant imagery all would certainly give him the title of "the Master". It's just too bad these strengths in most of his work are buried under unbelievably dense prose. Finishing one of James' novels is like emerging from an expedition into a deep cave. You certainly feel the same sense of accomplishment and fatigue.
That said, James' debut novel, Roderick Hudson, is a relatively quick read, filled with the interesting characters and settings, but without the convoluted writing style. It is the story of a young artist who is taken to Italy by an admiring patron, to become a great sculptor. Along the way, the artist struggles with his genius, and becomes distracted by...what else? A woman.
I felt for Rowland Mallet, the philanthropist who supports the man-child Roderick in his work. He has the patience of a saint, and is impeccably polite, almost to the point of annoyance. He is the reader's eyes and ears, through which the we perceive the other characters in the story.
Roderick Hudson himself is not likeable beyond a vague sympathy from the reader. He is given the opportunity most aspiring artists dream of: a patient, supportive patron, an exotic locale in which to work, the praise of his peers. He ends up squandering all of this over the most enigmatic of flirts, Miss Christina Light.
Throughout my reading of this novel, I wished one of the characters had the nerve to shed their 19th century sensibilities and put the coquettish Miss Light in her place. Rowland comes the closest, but he never musters the courage to mutter anything beyond a grudging, (and unrealistic) admiration for her. He watches the already engaged Roderick fall for her and does nothing until it is too late. None of the characters have much of a backbone.
This novel almost begs for a genuine villain to be a foil to the dull main characters and their encounters. Every other chapter involves Roderick, Rowland, and Christina somehow always running into each other, be it a roman coliseum, a catholic church, or a Swiss monastery. This doesn't seem to faze any of them, and they go on with their conversations with barely a, "fancy seeing YOU here" to be found.
Henry James has enough brilliance in his work to be worthy of study, but for those who read for entertainment (and that's what novels are supposed to be) Roderick Hudson is about the most accessible thing James has ever done. It's too bad the story itself isn't one of his better ones.
It's Funny That I'm the First..........1999-07-04
I wonder why the discrimination (is it ignorance?) exists regarding James's first great work, "Roderick Hudson." Yes, it is early James, and yes, snobs, it is very "readable." It's a page turner, the sentences are short, and the clauses only interfere in the early chapters, as James revised this earliest work with woefully-advised insertions of his later style. Once you get past these early chapters, however, you will be carried along - there are a few laughs as colorless Rowland Mallet tries to rein in the wild, sensitive Roderick.
Much of the action takes place in Italy - and you get to meet the delicious Princess Casamassima (at this point, Judith Light), to boot.
A real winner - for me, second only to "Portrait of a Lady"---
