Book Description
Long-term Forest Dynamics Plots (FDPs) allow ecologists to explain patterns in diversity and dynamics in tropical forests around the world. In this collection, Elizabeth Losos and Egbert Giles Leigh Jr. assemble extensive standardized data—collected here in one location for the first time—from sixteen tropical FDPs and synthesize the findings, putting these unique and valuable plots in a global context by highlighting the utility of the collected data for conservation and forest management.
Written by experts in the field of tropical ecology, Tropical Forest Diversity and Dynamism will appeal to students and professionals with an interest in community ecology and patterns of diversity.

Italian Riviera (Eyewitness Travel Guides)
ASIN: 1860118275 |
Book Description
The Italian Riviera means Liguria, which like a vial of essential oil conserves a concentrated dose of Mediterranean sensuality: mountains plunging into the sea, painted fishing ports and fleshpot resorts decked in flowers; at table, the birthplace of pesto offers a fresh, zesty cuisine. Yet just beyond the Riviera's sleekest cliches - Portofino and Portovenere, sassy San Remo, and the fabled Cinque Terre - there awaits a secret world of deep forests, hilltowns teetering on impossible brinks, olive groves and vineyards. In Genoa the scene changes again: piled high over the sea, Italy's great port is also its most under-rated art city, boasting one of the largest medieval centers in Europe, Baroque extravaganzas and the sparkling rebuilt Porto Antico.
This guide contains: practical travel advice; 200 hand-picked places to stay; 180 restaurants, bars & cafes; 18 maps & site plans; color touring-map section; stunning color photography; shopping in local markets. (5 1/2 x 8 1/2, 268 pages, color photos, maps)
Customer Reviews:
The best guide to Italian Riviera and Liguria.......2002-10-11
My wife and I bought all the guidebooks for the Italian Riviera and Liguria for our trip there March 02. The Cadogan guide was by far the best. The layout was easier to use and find info. The print was large enough to comfortably read while in the car going up and down the mountains. The historical capsules were brief yet informative. The pictures were few but good. After our first day or two, we dispensed with all the other guides and just used the Cadogan.
BTW, Liguria (Italian Riviera) is far superior to the French Riviera (which is still a great place).
Both have colorful histories and great scenery. The Italians are a bit friendlier, the hills there steeper and more dramatic. Most important is the contrast in small village life. In France, the fascinating medieval villages are wall-to-wall tourist shops. In Italy, the villages are where people still live and work. A much better experience for us.
For the Italian Riviera, train is the best mode of transportation. For the French Riviera, we prefer a car.

Wasted opportunity.......2007-07-03
After being charmed by "Freak the Mighty," I was anxious to read this sequel. To say it was a letdown would be an understatement. It's an example of everything to do wrong when writing a sequel. The story, such as it is, is terribly contrived. The action moves along simply because the plot demands it. Worse, the charming voice and character motivation Philbrick created for Max in the first book is wholly absent here. In "Freak," Max's friend Kevin was a strong character, one who stood on his own (no pun intended). The second character in this sequel, Worm, spends nearly all of her time buried in a book. Max has no one to play off of. While it's admirable to promote reading within a book (something I'm trying to accomplish in my own children's books), actually showing the character reading for most of the story effectively removes that character from the story.
I must also address the villain of the piece, Worm's stepfather, the "Undertaker," a cardboard villain who might as well be twirling his moustache and tying helpless damsels to the railroad track. Compare him to the juicy menace of Max's father and his seedy partners in crime of the first book.
All in all, this book that appears to have been come from the pen of an amateur than from that of Philbrick. It feels like a bad film novelization, and it trades on the memory of a much better book. What a shame.
A Must Read Book.......2007-02-14
This is a story about these two kids named Max and Worm. Max is a strong kid for his age. Worm is a 7-year-old girl that loves books, so she is nicknamed bookworm.
One-day Max is walking home from school. He sees that Worm's mom's husband is hurting Worm's mom, and Max doesn't like it. He breaks the door off the hinges. Max barges in like it's his house and the Undertaker (the husband) backs off from the wife and says," Get out of here, kid," in a rude kind of way. Max opens the door to Worm and grabs her so she's safe from the Undertaker. He runs out and hears her mom saying, "Get her out of here!" Then Max and Worm go to Montana, hoping that Worms's dad is there and can help them. (Sorry I can't tell you the rest.)
(This was a sequel to Freak the Mighty) With Kevin gone, I thought it would be boring but it wasn't. I liked the characters in this book. Worm was tiny and weak, yet she was able to help Max gain self-confidence. Max was big and strong, yet weak inside. If you like adventure, there is a surprise in every chapter. I thought it was a very good book; I recommend it for other readers.
Hated this book, definately a big NOT!!!!.......2006-11-07
This book is great. It is about a kid that lives with his grandparents and he meets a suspicious girl. When my friend Alex told me this was a great book, I didn't beieve him. It definately was. Talk about being scared, filled with action and excitement all at the same time. I finished it the first day. It is for all ages to enjoy.
READ THIS BOOK or else you will be missing out!!!
Read This Book.......2006-11-07
This book is great! It is easy to read and it keeps your eyes glued to the pages. It also has drama and the suspense you deserve. It is about a boy who is a giant and he is an innocent giant. Read this book to see if the boy is innocent. This book is Awesome. You need to read this book to see what happens, Everyone should read this book!!!!!!!!!! It is so good, I read it in one day.
Terrible In Comparison to Freak(2 Stars).......2006-05-04
First of all, to the reviewer 3 reviews below me, JEEZ!!!!! Would it kill you to put a spoiler alert before the review. Well, thanx for spoiling it for me before I even finished it, idiot!
Secondly, I didn't buy this. I read it in my school library from time to time and eventually finished it. Of course I read Freak the Mighty first, and loved it alot better than this. This is such a corny book(with names like, Dippy Hippie? Flower Hogey Fogeys? What the hell was the writer thinking?!?!). If there wasn't an original Freak the Mighty, I might've given this book an honest 3. But Max the Mighty sucks bad. The only returning characters are Max and his grandparents. No Gwen. No Iggy. No Loretta. No Killer Kane. No nothing.
Freak the Mighty should've never had a sequel. The story was basically complete at the end of Freak the Mighty. A true fan of FTM, like me, expects so much from MTM, but gets so little. You should only read this book if you absolutely NEED to know what has become of Max after Freak's departure. But if that is not the case, then you should just shun it, don't bother to even touch it, and pretend it was never written.

This has to be the best cartoon in history. Mighty Max rocks, he is smart and cool at the smae time. I want to order this, but I guess I can't because I have bought other things. Keep looking for other Mighty Max stuff.
Mighty Max in a book form--who could ask for more?!.......1998-11-24
As an avid fan of the cartoon, I have every episode on tape and numerous toys and paraphinalia--I haven't heard of anything like this though! I haven't read it, but I'm sure the plot is filled with action and humor--just like the television series--maybe the people at Horn Books don't give it two thumbs up, but I guess I wouldn't find it as enthralling if I were, like, 50 years old or so--don't diss what you haven't tried to enjoy! Mighty Max rockz!

Book Description
Since the revelation of the double helical structure of DNA by Watson and Crick fifty years ago, research into this important molecule has had a dramatic impact on science and society. This volume brings together some of the key workers in the field to explore DNA fingerprinting, the extraction of DNA from archaeological and palaeontological remains; the ethical implications of the genetic knowledge encoded in DNA; the complex role of DNA in cancer research and reproductive medicine; and finally, how genetic disorders teach us about human communication.

This comprehensive volume of Crane's work includes the first published editions of The Red Badge of Courage and Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, both of which were considerably toned down in subsequent editions for a genteel 1890s reading public. In addition to Crane's longer works, this volume presents his short fiction, as well as a wealth of supplementary material, including historical and cultural contexts, essays on urban life and reform in the late 19th century (to accompany Maggie), Civil War backgrounds (to accompany The Red Badge of Courage), and Spanish-American War backgrounds (to accompany Crane's short writings on the subject).

Book Description
The Red Badge of Courage (1895) is a vivid psychological account of a young man's experience of fighting in the American Civil War, based on Crane's reading of popular descriptions of battle. The intensity of its narrative and its naturalistic power earned Crane instant success, and led to his spending most of his brief remaining life war reporting. The other stories collected in this volume draw on this experience; `The Open Boat' (1898) was inspired by his fifty hour struggle with waves after his ship was sunk during an expedition to Cuba; `The Monster' (1899) is a bitterly ironic commentary on the ostracization of a doctor for harbouring the servant who was disfigured and lost his sanity rescuing his son. As a rare example of Crane working in a vein of American Gothic, it is particularly striking for its treatment of race and social injustice. `The Blue Hotel' traces the events that lead to a murder at a bar in a small Nebraska town. This edition is the most generously annotated edition of Crane's work, exploring it from a fresh critical perspective and focusing on his place as an experimental writer, his modernist legacy and his social as well as literary revisionism.
Download Description
First published in 1895, America's greatest novel of the Civil War was written before 21-year-old Stephen Crane had "smelled even the powder of a sham battle." But this powerful psychological study of a young soldier's struggle with the horrors, both within and without, that war strikes the reader with its undeniable realism and with its masterful descriptions of the moment-by-moment riot of emotions felt by me under fire. Ernest Hemingway called the novel an American classic, and Crane's genius is as much apparent in his sharp, colorful prose as in his ironic portrayal of an episode of war so intense, so immediate, so real that the terror of battle becomes our own ... in a masterpiece so unique that many believe modern American fiction began with Stephen Crane.

The War in the Eyes of the Union.......2007-03-28
The Red Badge of courage is a book that actually tells about how people felt about the Civil war.It tells of their family's discomfort of their decision. It is a book that tells a how a young soldeir fights in the war. Many die around this young boy as he goes through the heart of battle. The book has many exiting twists that mostly are not predictible from the start of the page. Will the young soldier die, or will he live? You will only know if you read the exiting story of Henry Flemming in The Red Badge of Courage.

The Red Badge of Manhood.......2007-01-08
The Red Badge of Courage is a classic American novel about a boy, who is changed into a man during his experiences in the Civil War. The book does a good job of showing this progression from start to end. In the beginning the protagonist, Henry Fleming, is a scared, young, and inexperienced soldier, who fears that he will run from his first battle. However, at the end of the novel, Henry and his friend Wilson lead the regiment to victory over the rebels.
The thing that Crane does very well in his book is to make a very realistic environment. The story is set in the country, which has many forests, rivers, and fields. The soldiers in the story must overcome these obstacles as they fight the enemy. Also, Crane uses rural dialect to add more depth to conversations that the soldiers have amongst themselves. Flashbacks are used in this novel to recall experiences in Henry's past. For example, Henry has a flashback in the beginning chapter of the novel that tells readers why Henry has enlisted in the army.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good war novel, and is in high school, or older. However, even if you don't like war stories, you might still enjoy this book.
Black and Blue Badge .......2006-12-21
Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage is considered an epic American novel. I for one, am not really sure why. It is OK, but compared to the best of Hemingway, Roth, Heller, etc. it is like comparing backyard badmitton with your nephew to the NFL.
What is most interesting is how literature has changed in 100+ years. Crane wrote this thing as a magazine serialization, which does not exist anymore to my knowledge. Red Badge is also full of wind-bag characters who never get to the point, and the ending is rather ambivalent. The protagonist does not really have a name, he is a coward, and there is no love interest except his mother, who only appears on the first 10 pages.
Other than that, this thing is OK. Crane was too young to have been in the Civil War, so to his credit he did impeccable and thorough research with veterans, mostly conducted in saloons. Crane personally was a disaster, his life was not much longer than this novel.
But seriously, read the Red Badge if you did not do so in high school. The descriptions of the battles, especially the confusion, chaos, inability to establish objectives, focus, or leadership, is not what is portrayed in John Wayne movies. The protagonist is very unsure about his future and his role in the war; this is a great theme that Crane did not develop fully in this tiny book. But there is great insight into why the men fought, what motivated them, and how they were inspired to take on impossible, dangerous, and mindless tasks.
